Tuesday scent of the day 1/12

Posted by Robin on 12 January 2021 290 Comments

It's Tuesday and National Marzipan Day. (Also, Raf Simons' birthday.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm not quite in marzipan, but I can claim the thread of bitter almond in Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto.

Reminder: on 1/15, wear a fragrance to match Ultimate Gray and/or Illuminating, Pantone's colors of the year for 2021.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Nina teapot ("The Nina is a modern spin on the classic teapot. It features a large comfortable handle, textural finish and distinctive smooth shape. Perfect for a calm afternoon of quiet contemplation, you may find you’ve drained the whole pot before you know it.") from Viva Scandinavia is about €42. (And if it looks familiar, you have a good memory: we featured the same teapot, in green, back in 2018.)

It is very easy to be disheartened and afraid right now. Please find solace in this wonderful and caring community. My antidote is always fragrance, books and good movies and walks with my little old poodle.

I’m sorry about your doldrums, I’m feeling them too this week. Yesterday’s SOTD was 4160 Tuesdays’ Maxed Out, new to me, and I liked it very much, so there’s that. I may need a comfort scent today (Wednesday), so L’Ambre des Merveilles is calling to me.

Ooh, I love that teapot! It appeals to my Scandinavian roots.
I’m in LL Rose 31 from a newly arrived sample. This is lovely. I ordered a few from LL. Another 13 was among them and I tried that last night. At first spray it was lovely and then very quickly turned into an ambroxan bomb on my skin. Blech. Needed to scrub, that one will go immediately into the giveaway pile.

I wish I could see that teapot in person — I am tempted to put it in line for my next teapot breakage, but I fear it is hard to keep tea stains off that finish.

Oh yeah, I hadn’t thought about stains. The color and lines really appeal to me. We are in the process of repainting our entire house gray and that would just go so well. But alas! I canNOT fall down the teapot rabbit hole too!

I am having a smoke/incense, leather and balsamic phase lately,

But today i felt the need for something airy and soft.
Maybe it was because the sun suddenly made an appearance (after quite a few grey days).

I picked Le Cri de La Lumière.
    No regrets.

SotD St. Clair Scents Song of Aubrac – on an itsy-bitsy narcissus theme this week.

This perfume is THE antidote to the doldrums. It is currently defying the snow outside and the chunky turtleneck sweater I’m wearing, and sings out that spring WILL come and things will get better. Ahhhhhhh…

Was going to save this til Friday for CP points – but needed a hit of that irrepressible optimism today ?

      Sounds amazing.

That brand (like a lot of other interesting artisan/niche USA perfume brands) is nowhere to be found in Europe.
I think I understand why (practical reasons…hassle of shipping overseas).

Part of me is sad about it, part of me still needs to try/retry and empty dozens and dozens of samples from other brands ??
So there is no real problem here.

But still…..i would not mind if an importer/niche shop here in EU specalised in USA brands and made them easier available on this side of the pond.

Jimmy is a really nice (and honest) guy. When my Mercedes had work that was still under warranty, that I was unaware of, he told me to go to the dealership and how to handle it.
I took my 30 year old Mercedes diesel to him and my 2008. He’s really good people. His mom runs the front office, and he and his dad own the business. He is a dedicated family man and all around good person.

Hello all! My SOTD is Clinique Aromatics Elixir Perfumer’s reserve – I’d describe it as a cross of Aromatics Elixir, with the mossy/herbal/earthy vibe, over an oriental base. Despite only being dabbed, it’s overwhelming. This may go into the swap pile, after I scrub off with bleach in the shower.
Terrible night’s sleep, I think I consumed green tea too late in the day. I’m bleary eyed… 😯

That AE Perfumer’s Reserve sounds rather intriguing, even if it is a Godzilla perfume. Did a specific note rub you the wrong way, or was it just too much of a muchness?

It was just way too much of a ‘big hairy’ muchness. I think it’d be more wearable if it were in an EdT formulation. I love resins in a perfume but this is all resins and heavy mosses, which is overwhelming to me….

    Good morning NST!
SOTD is Incense Oud (By Kilian) which I find extremely office friendly and have worn the heck out of for the past few months. I’m down to the last 10 mLs of my refill bottle (I was too cheap to buy the fancy one) and I don’t think it’s available anymore.
I’m honoring teapot Tuesday by drinking tea/herbal stuff today (in reality my stomach is protesting the daily coffee I’ve been having lately). Plus, it keeps me warm.

Maison Louie Marie Bois de Balincourt today. Many compare this to LL Santal 33, but I think this is more floral than that (and less pickle).

These Zoom days are very long. Joining many of you in wishing for spring!

I’m wearing L’Original by Andree Putman today. I’ve really been gravitating toward earthy or spa scents lately in response to how I’m feeling about the world and this is my favorite “lobby of a hotel with a very fancy day spa” scent.

Anxiety is on high alert. We’re going to be going back to school in person next week, but with 1/3 of the students in the classroom and 2/3 virtual, rotating weekly. I’m having a very hard time trying to figure out how the logistics of this are going to work and how to provide a decent experience for all of the kids. While having to constantly clean. Sigh. And I’m not going to mention any of the other things that are not helping my mood.

I feel your anxiety! I don’t know how teachers juggle this, and I feel very bad for our educators.

My son has the option to go back to the classroom next week, but I’m keeping him home and seems like about 1/3 of the class will stay virtual. It wasn’t an easy decision.

Oh, sistine, I’m so sorry you are in that situation! My district is keeping us all home for now, and every 3 weeks or so, they tell us they’ll decide again in 3 weeks or so. . . We have been given no clear idea of what “in person” would look like, except that for kids it’s likely only a few hours, a few days a week, and probably they’re just sitting in one room the whole time, even though we’re a middle school. My guess is it would really be the same instructional model as teaching virtually, just with some kids away from home a few hours a week.

SOTD is MMM Whispers in the Library, a cozy vanilla. After years of not liking vanilla in perfumes, I am warming to it.

We’ve been watching loads of old movies lately. Recently saw Auntie Mame, which I hadn’t seen in years. There’s a scene where Mame gives her household Christmas gifts; the housekeeper’s gift is a bottle of perfume (“Smells French!”) Of course I’m sitting there trying to figure out what perfume it is (what else does a perfumista do when a perfume bottle appears onscreen?); it’s been bugging me for days. I knew the bottle looked familiar, but what was it? Finally got it! It’s Shalimar in the montre flacon:

My very first bottle of perfume was Shalimar cologne splash in one of those bottles. I was ten, so didn’t appreciate it, and tried to use the cap as a Barbie hat. It couldn’t get it to stay on her head?

One of flacons features in a bathtub (sex) scene in Shaft, I believe (it may have been in Superfly because I saw them in a double feature.) I, of course, was trying to figure out which scent..figured it was likely a Shalimar bath oil. Wanted it so much.

You smell great Robin! That was a successful blind buy for me.

Since it’s National Marzipan Day, then it must be time for Lancôme Jasmins Marzipane. I need no excuse but happy to have one.

Ornaments and lights are off the tree. One of the staff in our building will come up later to bag the tree and remove it. One of the great advantages of doorman buildings. They do this so they don’t have tenants getting needles everywhere if they try to remove a tree themselves… A win-win.

Only the most southern part of The Netherlands has snow. For the rest of us its rain, clouds…if you are lucky: a few rays of sun.

Sounds like Vancouver weather — no snow here, just rain, clouds, and a very occasional patch of blue sky. We did make the trip to the snow (on one of the mountains above the city) but it was also overrun by visitors, so it will be a while before we do that again.

If we’re house-bound anyway, I’d love to see some snow here. 🙂 Enjoy the whiteness, lucasai!

Your comment brings back memories! My sisters and I were the same, tall, thin and long legged. Mom tried to save money by sewing a lot of our clothes, and often cut the pants a leeetle bit short. You could buy less fabric that way! We were forever in high waters. It’s funny to think about now.

From the profound (one of my favorite young, sweet, smart, funny, generous colleagues is sick as hell with COVID, as is her husband of less than a year) and banal (my research has stalled on something because I cannot figure a work-around to get adobe flash player items to play). All I want to do is go for long walks and instead I am at my computer trying to sound much smarter than I am about things I am feeling increasingly ambivalent about. Grrrrrr. So sorry!

As for the flash problem, have you tried different browsers?
I think most of them have phased out the support of flash already but maybe Firefox is an option?

Firefox will end support for Adobe Flash in Firefox at the end of 2020, as announced back in 2017. Adobe and other browsers will also end support for Flash in January and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all.

“Firefox version 84 will be the final version to support Flash. Firefox version 85 (release date: January 26, 2021) will ship without Flash support, improving our performance and security. There will be no setting to re-enable Flash support.”

More info in this article. And maybe the commercial option mentioned at the end of the article can be a solution?

      https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/end-support-adobe-flash

Wish you luck on getting that flash content working! ?

Thanks for everyone’s sweetness. I am pretty bereft that my colleague is going through this. She is a really special young woman who goes out on a limb for her colleagues and friends and is always generous with her time and expertise. She is across the country, so I can’t bring her food or anything else. I ordered a large basket of scones for her today–hopefully it will cheer her and her husband–but that may be wishful thinking.

My slightly used, 50 ml bottle of L’Artisan Timbuktu arrived. The EBay seller included a sample of Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan which is very similar to Pacifica’s Spanish Amber and I like it! I have a more recent sample of Timbuktu and shall do a side by side. Oh no! I think we can say with no hesitation that L’Artisan fragrances were massively reformulated when the company was sold. The dry downs of my dueling Timbuktus are similar but the opening is not even close. So, get an older bottle. I see them for sale at all the resellers and you can often find them for about what they sold for originally, accounting for inflation. I think some fragrances fared better than others. Safran Troublant and Passage D’Enfer seem in good shape to my nose but your mileage may vary.

I am sure you are right that it’s been reformulated, but head to head comparisons like that are misleading because aging will also affect how the older bottle smells. You really can’t be sure *exactly* how they differ, and often the top notes are the first to change.

Going for the easy and literal CP points today in Gris Clair. Every time I wear it, I wonder why I do not wear it more often — but it is still probably going to be the first Lutens FB I finish (sometime around 2028?).

My husband and I both got whooshed into Phase 1B of the NY State vaccination program yesterday (in-person higher ed instructors). There are currently no clinic sessions with openings, and we are still waiting for guidance on how to prove our “job role” (in addition to employer, which is easy) if we do ever get clinic spots. I am shocked that our category was added this early, so will just be patient.

Patience is indeed very needed. I have also been trying to make an appointment for my elderly mother since yesterday and I have not found any clinic here in NY with openings yet. I will keep checking every day, but it looks like it will take long time before she gets that appointment for the vaccine.

Also, it asked for health insurance. Was that supposed be medicare or their medicare supplement? No instructions given.

I called an elderly neighbor yesterday to mention to her that the township is now taking registrations for Phase 1B (I assume she’s older than 75 but maybe she just did not she well). She thanked me and said another neighbor also called her. She had called the number and left a message about how unhappy she is with the (lack of) progress. Seriously, we apparently got 500 doses (no missing zeros) and the next 500 is coming soon. It’s not a big operation so I could have told her to just register and not complain but that’s what she likes to do – complain.

Complaining definitely doesn’t help. Getting a vaccine, especially for old people is going to be a long and painful process. I am sure many will not get the vaccine now because they will not know how to navigate the registration system. Let’s hope for the best one things calm down.

Our local healthcare system has said that it is making phone calls to patients 75 and older to let them know when an appointment has become available. That age may now drop to 65 for NYS. But it doesn’t help older people who may not have a regular healthcare provider. I am feeling pretty unhappy that I may get vaccinated before so many elderly people. I won’t refuse the vaccine — but I will worry.

Great that you’re within striking distance of getting the vaccine! The best Christmas gift we got this year is that my dear 90 year-old FIL got his first shot just before Christmas at his assisted living facility and should get the second one this week. What a relief! With that done, I’m happy to wait my turn as I am fortunate enough to have a job I can do fully remotely, and plenty of grocery delivery options. I’m counting my blessings. Good luck to all of you who are trying to get vulnerable relatives vaccinated.

SOTD: Aedes de Venustus. Sticking with dry scents this week, to make sure there’s no whiff of “eau de dead rat in the ceiling.” Anything sweet starts to make me wonder if I’m smelling the smell from beyond the closed bedroom door. Ugh.

In other news, Undina has her entertaining statistics post up and you must go and read it. I thought I would try my hand at doing a back of the envelope with IG postings even though I too a break in June – early July so these do not reflect the “lost weeks”. I posted similar stats in a comment.

    1. Top 3 houses out of 63 worn – Chanel (31), Guerlain (23) and Tauer (13). The Tauer surprised me! I wore No.19 EDP 12 times but so am 100% sure I wore it several times during my hiatus.

    2) I wore Indie houses 95 (!) times. Top houses: Chris Rusak (9), April Aromatics / Zoologist / SSS (7, tied), St. Clair (6) and Jorum Studio (5).

    3) Caturday – 24 (I previously reported 22)

    4) ?- 32 (I previously reported 29)

And no, I won’t be tracking on a spreadsheet or any tool and will just do a hand count next year!

Hope your brain is rested now, whatever NV you were wearing! I was definitely in Pichola.

Sitting in a yummy cloud of Angel Muse and finalizing(?) my Sundance schedule. These virtual film festivals are really easy and accessible (would never get to do Sundance otherwise, since I’m not industry, just an enthusiast) but I’ve been missing the community of the in person ones I do have reasonable access to. Hopefully by the time the bulk of them roll around in the fall we’ll all be happy and vaccinated.

Angel Muse falls into the “comfort scent” category for me. Nice choice!

Commando today due to my first ever dermatologist appointment. It went well, but there were a couple of spots the doc didn’t quite like the look of, so I have a follow up scheduled in a few months’ time.

Back to perfumed antics tomorrow, yay!

It’s overdue, TBH. The doctor didn’t seem terribly concerned, just wanted to keep an eye on things.

I’m glad you’ve taken the plunge and will follow up. I go at least once a year to have various moles looked at. I’ve had a number removed over the years when they became worrisome though not urgent. Getting regular skin checks is a good habit! Plus the added benefit of the opportunity to ask more frivolous skin questions and get actual expert guidance instead of “hope in a bottle.”

In Bellodgia Extrait from a bottle that was basically free at an estate sale last January. I thought it was off but I just resurrected it today – a powerhouse!

Getting my vaccine today as an allied healthcare worker. Feeling very grateful.

It was such a moving experience – gratitude for all of those that created the vaccine and all that it took to get it to us and administer it and sadness for all of those who weren’t able to get it in time.

I’m joining in the vaccine frustration because Mom was scheduled for a clinic tomorrow (her whole place) and it got canceled today, but no one knows why! It’s so aggravating!

I’m very interested in synaesthesia. I don’t have it but one of my colleagues does; to him, all numbers and letters have colors. Fascinating. Happens a lot with musical notes too. I do associate certain perfumes with colors, as we all probably do. Some are definitely green or red. Gray is harder! I thought of Elephant, but that one is definitely green! Today I wore the one scent I have that I’m sure is gray: SL l’Orpheline. A calm gray scent with incense and musk. Very beautiful.

Do you people who are tea-drinkers always make your tea in a pot? Loose leaf or bags? Just curious.

I’m going to make a big pot of lentil soup with kale and other nice things tonight! Including at least one jalapeño!

Re: tea — it depends. I have both bagged and loose teas. If I am feeling ambitious, I’ll make a whole pot. Most of the time, though, I use a single bag for one mug of tea.

Sorry to hear about your mom’s vax clinic getting cancelled.

Sorry about your mom not able to get the vaccine today. Hopefully they will reschedule very soon.
Regarding tea (green, black, oolong): I usually make it in a cup or a pot (especially if I’m home) and I use loose leaf. At work I will use bags but I make sure they’re filled with loose leaf as well.
For herbal tea I use mostly bags.

My sister gave me a clear glass teapot for Christmas and a tea light stand for it. I use it a couple of times a week since the process is calming. Other days, I zap water in the microwave and use either teabags or loose leaf tea in an infuser. I’m all over the map!

I hope your mom gets vaccinated soon! That is troubling.

I make my morning loose leaf black tea in a pot because i make several cups at once, and ditto with herbal tea at night. But in between I do individual cups. Green tea & oolong, I always make in individual cups.

I’ve been doing inventory at work for the last 2 days, but now it’s my Friday! I accidentally wore Moulin rouge today. I thought I had grabbed Dior Addict (decants) I’m pretty sure this is the second time I’ve done this too! I smelled great anyway ?

So what are gray scents? Inquiring minds want to know!
    Yellow seems easier!
