Monday scent of the day 1/11

Posted by Robin on 11 January 2021 221 Comments

It's Monday, and in the UK, Heritage Treasures Day. Birthdays include Alice Paul and Clarence Clemons. What fragrance are you wearing?

For some beauty and cheer on a grey Monday morning, I went with Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola.

Reminder: on 1/15, wear a fragrance to match Ultimate Gray and/or Illuminating, Pantone's colors of the year for 2021.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the You Are Not Alone mural in Bushwick, by Jason Naylor, found via Pantone at Facebook, is part of the You Are Not Alone Murals project. Read more in All About The “You Are Not Alone” Murals Popping Up Around NYC.

    SotD is Opium
A few drops of the vintage perfume, and two sprays of a newer version edp.

Last week i experienced one of those “ifyoudontlikeit, itwillbeextrahardtogetridof”events.
I tried Aqua Universalis on friday morning ( a very fancy mini came with one of my orders).
Its not bad, but totally not my cup of tea. So i scrubbed it off. 36 hours and a shower later i could still detect it ? geesz
At least you get longevity for your money ?

Oh, you smell fantastic! I adore Opium. Amazing how ‘oily’ and thick the vintage Opium perfume is.
Why is it the *scrubber* perfumes seem to have nuclear strength??

        Thank you!
Yes the vintage perfume is so smooth and that drydown is something the new edp cannot replicate.

Scrubbers having nuclear strength is the Unwritten rule of perfumista life ?

    Good morning Y’all,

I’ve been rediscovering some older Scentbird samples the past few days, and found a long forgotten Chloe Love Story sample. Going with that today, and enjoying a fresh neroli vibe this morning!

I’m now doing Scentbird, Royalty Scents, and FragranceNet! Ridiculous amount of fragrance, but it’s my favorite way to try scents at a good value. I have a lot…..A LOT…..of decants to get thru! 🙂

Have you considered Scented, the sampling subscription from Indigo? It’s very reasonably priced, you get 3 atomizer samples and get a chance to guess the mystery fragrance for a chance to win a FB of that fragrance. The feature of the month is 20% off. Ask me how I know ?

Morning everyone! My SOTD is Absolu by Rochas (from a decant) – I am normally not a huge fan of orange blossom, and especially Lily (it can be throat-clenching). The Benzoin, Balsam, Labdanum dry down, is so delicious and powdery.

Having fun planning meals around what’s in our cupboards to avoid moving heavy canned goods. I’m thinking it’s Eggs in Purgatory for supper tonight. I found this recipe for Shashuka, which also looks delicious. 😀

Both your sotd and that dish sound great!

I dont think i ever knowingly smelt a Rochas, but I think my mother had a small bottle on her vanity in the 80s, the blue one (must have been Byzance)

Oh, thank you! I am a fan of eggs (all forms, poached, fried, egg salad).
I wore the Byzance perfume, and that blue bottle is soooo pretty! Helps that cobalt blue is a favorite color of mine. Tama wore one of the Rochas perfumes, it smelled so gorgeous and velvety on her. I think it was Femme?
Here’s my cheese grits with an egg and hot sauce.
        No cholesterol here! Nope… 😀

Sweet! It’s problematic, but I could easily eat my body weight in grits.
A favorite is shrimp with grits or fried catfish with grits.
I have Celiac, instead of regular breading, I use a mix of corn starch and rice flour for my fried chicken or fish. It has a satisfying, crispy crunch.

I avoid using GF flour blend substitutes like cup 4 cup for frying, they have dairy which affects texture.

I have Celiac and can’t eat Farro, but it’s a grain much like wheat berry. It has a chewy/nutty flavor.
For recipes like this, I typically use quinoa or millet as a base.

    Ciao!
Inspired by SmokeyT and Springpansy I decided to really work out this morning. I did weights and some planks. I am exhausted. Am I still allowed to indulge in my morning ritual of toast? lol

We had a beautiful sunrise this morning, I posted some photos on my social media. It was very very pink and pretty. A beautiful start to a Monday.

I am still sampling the JM scents, today is blackberry bay

I recently tried using my regular banana bread recipe and subbing about 50% almond flour and 50% Trader Joe’s gluten free flour blend, and it turned out surprisingly fine! I thought the whole middle would collapse but it didn’t.

This is an good CP week for me since I just got a small batch of samples featuring narcissus last week! The ones with the yellow centres really scream Illuminating, and grey is actually my favorite color.

SOTD Bruno Fazzolari Au Delà Narcisse. This one is very cold, mossy and unisex to me. I think it really captures the Narcissus who would have bluntly rejected Echo and sat mesmerized by his own reflection at the bank of an icy-cold river fed by mountain water!

I’m on day 6 of Lost Cherry. I feel like cm8 with Assam of India, or ltsg with Songes.

We have a resident opossum that we’ve seen at night several times over the past year that we’ve lived in this house. I didn’t even know opossums hung out in suburbia; they feel like mountain woodland/marshy creatures to me. Anyway, this morning we had quite a surprise when we saw our weird little friend hanging out on the fence…in daytime. (Technically it was before sunrise, at ~7am, but still.) Quite a surprise. The Internet suggests they can come out in daytime without necessarily being rabid. I certainly hope that’s the case! In the meantime, when I go to the backyard, I will be a bit careful.

Thinking of the week’s theme, I went with SL Gris Clair… but it isn’t really grey, is it? It’s more a dusty lavender. (At least the version I have, probably fifteen years old, not less than ten, based on cyclomethicone rather than alcohol, as is common with rollerballs. No telling what it smells like these days.)

I agree with dusty lavendar, but there’s something about certain shades of grey that can veer into purple terretory, so I think it fits!

It’s a challenge to come up with a truly gray perfume. The color they’re showing is not a misty gray, it’s a solid gray. Hmmm.

I’m warning up in Absolue pour le Soir, after wearing it yesterday and the night before. I pulled it off the shelf and was heart-striken thinking it had turned, but it must have just been what was left in the atomizer tube. Smells seductive and warm as ever. I’m so sad this one didn’t sell well.

I am trying out Fleurs and Alleurs by the Different Company, which I got for practically free, a blind buy based on may admiration for some of the companies’ other offerings and that it was a Celine Ellana creation.

It seems like a granddaughter of some of the turn of the (last) century Guerlain’s particularly Eau D’ Imperial: You know the one who does not have the originality or depth of the founder’s, and is hip to the latest trends but is still trying to work within the heritage.*.Alleurs and Fleurs is a light floral cologne with an anise base. The floral includes a sheer tuberose, which was probably super chic when the fragrance was developed and represents the granddaughter’s modernizing trend.

The notes allegedly include black elder flower, which I have never heard of, white neroli, tuberose and white musk. White musks often give me migraines, but I have not detected it yer. I do get the tuberose and anise. There is also a lime/linden scent which some have complained creates an off putting sharpness. I would say “crisp” rather than sharp, which will probably be very welcome in the summer.

Assuming that musk does not appear or is not the migraine inducing molecule which I find uncomfortable, this will be a nice everyday cologne for my collection.

Wearing Chergui for the first time in over a year, and why did I wait so long? This was my first niche purchase and one I loved at first sniff. Though sometimes the tobacco seems to drone on and on, today it feels perfect.

We just painted the interior of our small house with *a lot* of greys — Benjamin Moore Classic Gray in some rooms, Stonington Gray in the living room, cabinets in Beacon Gray, which is really more blue than gray, and doors in Beacon Gray and FlowerBox. Oyster white for trim and ceilings. It is super light and super cheerful. The one room that *didn’t* work was the one where we tried yellow. Going to have to repaint it!

At one point I must have had twenty-five different grays on the wall to pick, so I am sure that Wickham was in the mix! The they we were crazy at the hardware store!

Our old house’s exterior was painted Stonington Gray. I made some poor color choices in interior rooms there (e.g., lavender bath), so my son said I’m not allowed to pick out paint colors unaided again!

We moved here in February and decided we wanted clean and bright. We painted samples on poster board and moved them all around the house for days. I wanted a Hale Navy accent wall but was voted down. Just as well – this feels perfect.

Hey, I did my living room and dining room in Wickham Gray this year. It’s perfect for those rooms, because they have lots of windows but the front windows look onto a porch so aren’t as bright as they might be. The WG really helped make those rooms brighter and bigger…

Put on Eau Duelle from a decant. This feels like the golden vanilla is drowned in a greyish incense smoke. It’s not bad, but I still kind of dislike it. The same happened with Vanille Insensée. Funnily I like incense, but definitely in another style.
Read an article in the paper about a charity, that transports terminally ill patients, that cannot be transported sitting to a place they want to visit one last time. One wanted to see a concert, others a soccer game or see the sea. I was moved and gave some money to their charity. Such a great idea!

I love Dryad so much. You smell amazing. Have you had any trouble with it evaporating? My bottle went from a significant bit left to nothing without me spraying it! I have a lot of the Papillon perfumes and this seems to happen with them. The bottles maybe?

No … so far anyway. I’ll keep an eye on it! One thing that I have noticed is that the sprayer is fussy about the amount of pressure – if I press with my index finger, the spray is weak and kind of a single stream, whereas if I hold it so that I can spray with my thumb, supporting the bottom of the bottle with the rest of my fingers, the spray is much stronger and more diffuse. I wonder if the neck crimp lets air in or something (which might contribute to both issues). I might try wrapping the neck with plyofilm where it joins the bottle and see if that works any magic on the spray head.

I’ll be doing Amouages this week. Tried Journey yesterday. It’s one of the Ines I really don’t like. Today’s choice is Memoir Woman. Good but I don’t need a bottle.

Amouage Sunshine would be an obvious choice for that yellow color of the year, but I truly loathe it! Except the bottle is pretty. Isn’t there another bright yellow Amouage? Of course, associating the scent with the color of the bottle is probably not the idea for our CP….

Mimosa? Which did very little for me either.
I kind of like Memoir. The first hour or so is a bit rough but it gets better over time, unlike this pandemic.

Makes me think we should have a CP called “It’s not easy being green!”

And green can be big like an ocean
      Or important like a mountain
      Or tall like a tree
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why
      But why wonder, why wonder?
I am green and it’ll do fine
      It’s beautiful
And I think it’s what I want to be

We could “scent” the Muppets. Miss Piggy is easy to scent. Gonzo could be trickier. Is there a chicken-y scent?!

Replica By the Fireplace. I’m moving from “like” to “love” with this one, it smells so good! Got my house cleaned today so I’m just going to sit here with a book and enjoy it for awhile, and let my perfume waft. Cozy!

I’m wearing the dreaded Prada Infusion d’Iris, simply because it seems like a gray scent. I say dreaded, because I’ve never really liked this blind buy. Too powdery to my nose and taste. But…I’m liking it better today.

Trying to be patient in my husband’s foot-dragging on taking down the tree. I took down all the felted and soft ornaments. We just need to do the breakables and lights.

I haven’t spritzed anything yet today because I had a mild migraine this morning and was scared to make it worse. Thankfully it’s mostly gone now.
I am expecting a long-awaited, long saved-for bottle of Bois des Iles in the mail this evening (fingers crossed), so I will eagerly spray that this evening!

It’s finally here! I’m pretty sure I’m the last stop for UPS.

I got a giant bottle of the EDP. I had been nursing an old small decant for a long time, I don’t even know what concentration it was, I think a pre-Exclusifs EDT or EDP. I finally got to try the new EDP and decided it’s worthy. So I snapped up a very full pre-owned bottle. 😀

I wore Agonist Isis today because to me it’s definitely a “yellow” scent. I have a total conviction that ylang-Ylang is a yellow fragrance. This is gorgeous. It got cold here! I can’t believe that, as a Michigan native, I now find 43 degrees nearly impossible to bear! Just found out my office building at the university had a fire from someone’s space heater (not allowed). The fire triggered sprinklers and three floors of offices were flooded! OMG! People can’t go in to check and are scared about losing books, mementos, diplomas, notes, records, etc. It’s so awful! I’m not in there anymore but feel sad.

Ylang-ylang does have yellow flowers, so I’d call it a yellow scent. Particularly if it has a hint of banana to it, as some ylang does.

I had also thought to wear some ylang ylang perfumes this week, as they are assuredly yellow in my mind. Ditto mimosa.

That’s terrible about the flooding in your old university office building! So many books and important things in those offices.
