Velvet & Sweet Pea Luminous Lemurs ~ perfume review

Posted by Jessica on 25 September 2020 5 Comments

Back in June, I wondered whether we’d see any independent perfumers responding to the events of 2020 through their fragrance work. Yes, as it turns out: Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has been creating a series of fragrance “sketches” inspired by her home surroundings (see my review of Hot Masala), and now Laurie Stern of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery has released Luminous Lemurs. Laurie writes, “COVID-19 has made it even more clear to me that the purpose of my work is to help animals and indigenous communities,” and Luminous Lemurs is a tribute to these endangered creatures and their human neighbors.

I’m a longtime fan of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Black Cat, Honey and Moonlight, so I would have been curious about Luminous Lemurs if I hadn’t known that it’s being launched for a good cause. Laurie is donating portion of its profits to Centre ValBio…

Clever packaging for this 2-in-1 hand sanitizer and hand lotion from Jo Loves: apparently you squeeze one side of the tube for the sanitizer and the other side for the lotion. In Pomelo, £25 for 25 ml of each, at Jo Loves in the UK.

Friday scent of the day 9/25

Happy Friday and happy National Comic Book Day! (And a few selected birthdays: William Faulkner, Donald Glover, Glenn Gould, Pedro Almodóvar, plus a quick PSA: the freebiemeet starts tomorrow.) Our community project for today: name a favorite comic book character, and wear the fragrance that suits him or her.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I have a feeling that real comic book people do not include comic strips as “comic books”, even if the strips have been collected in books. I’m going with Calvin and Hobbes anyway. I did not pay any attention to the strip during the ten years Bill Watterson was writing it (1985-1995), but once my son learned to read it was one of his favorites, and then I started to read it too, and even now I can pick up one of the books and lose track of time for the next hour or so. So I’m scenting Calvin, who would not wear cologne in a million years, but he probably has that little boy dirt smell. Demeter Dirt would be perfect but if I have any I can’t find it, and CB I Hate Perfume Black March is too sad, so I’m in (a precious tiny drop of) CB I Hate Perfume On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. It’s not quite right but I do smell awfully good…
