Tuesday scent of the day 12/29

Posted by Robin on 29 December 2020 293 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus the fifth day of Christmas and the fourth day of Kwanzaa. RIP Pierre Cardin. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Strange Invisible Perfumes Black Rosette. Tea at the moment is a blend of Assam from Upton and Numi Golden Chai.

Reminder: 1/1 is New Years Day...Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Adios, 2020. Wear a perfume that will bring you good luck in 2021.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the 12 Days of Christmas teapot appears to no longer be on the market, and I don't know who made it.

I have been thinking about blind buying the new Shalimar flanker but I just can’t pull the trigger.
I read reviews and one thing that scares me is the mention of a harsh detergent ? opening.

Thrift is my cup of tea! The vintage clothes in thrift and consignment shops are not just less expensive, but also higher quality, in both fabric and construction. I’d much rather shop there than at Macy’s or Ann Taylor.

Good morning all, my SOTD is Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir, dusty truffles, patchouli, oud, and roses.
Very sleepy today, I may lay in bed and read (and nap).

I fully endorse your plan for the day. Remember to keep something to drink (and maybe nibble) on the nightstand, so’s you don’t have to get out of bed too often.

That is a great plan, I have M & Ms, tea, water, and perhaps I should get Gluten Free cookies. I don’t want to expend too much energy today.
I think I’m just way too run down and my body is telling me to rest. I’ve been in bed asleep by 9:30 every night for the past week.

Thank you! I almost gave this away and then kept it, I’m so glad that I did!
I purchased NdN, Purple Patchouli, Moss Breches, and Oud Wood, just after their release; they are my favorites from TF private blend line. Everything else is just ‘meh’ to me, $$ saved that’s for sure!

Noir de Noir is the one that showed me I could like patchouli – at least in some perfumes.

Yes, absolutely! It’s definitely a gateway patchouli for sure!
I love just plain patchouli oil, but patchouli smells like a woody vanilla on me and I have a 30 year old aged patchouli oil, so it’s decidedly more mellow on my skin.

It’s time for Diptyque Oud Palao for me today, and here’s a kinda eerie photo of it that I took few days ago during a walk in the forest.

Hi cazaubon! As an Irish citizen I am not affected, not as regards Spain anyway. I lived a long time in the UK so my pension is in what may become a clown currency, but we’ll see. Not much I can do about it anyway. :^D

    FREEBIE

On the fifth day of Christmas I’m offering for free
    5 ml of Spring

This is a 5 ml decant of Dasein Spring purchased from Olfactif. It is in a very nice opaque metallic twist-up spray vial. Because it is opaque (and I have no idea how to take it apart) I cannot see the actual level of the perfume inside, but it should contain most of the original 5 ml, as it have only used a few sprays. It came without any label on it to indicate the fragrance, so I have placed a label on it. I do not know how well it will stick.

For anyone unfamiliar with this scent–it is NOT a fresh, light, floral girly take on spring, i.e., not a typical “spring floral”. It is supposed to have rose and violet in it, but my nose does not pick them out. It is dominated by the vetiver. I found it interesting, but not something I particularly wanted to wear, so it is up for grabs.

Spring was discontinued several years ago, and in fact Dasein is closing down, so there will be no more of this perfume made. If you have been wanting this perfume but could not locate any to purchase, I would be happy to send this one to you.

To claim, contact me at the email address associated with my gravatar.

Finishing up the last of the stollen I baked on Christmas Eve. The weather here is cloudy but warm, with a forecast high in the mid 70’s. No perfume yet. We are planning to visit a nearby wildlife park (the type where you drive through while the animals are roaming around freely). This should be a good day for it, before it becomes rainy again tomorrow.

I associate it with Christmas. We always had it for breakfast on Christmas morning when I was a kid, and back then I hated it. My grandparents knew a German woman who would give loaves of it out at Christmas, and they would bring their loaf with them when they came to visit and save it for Christmas breakfast. The thing was, by the time we ate it, it was dry and stale. It wasn’t until years later after the German woman passed away and my mother made it instead that I found out that when it is fresh, it is delicious! A year or two later, I tried my hand at making it, and now I have been baking it at Christmas for over 35 years.

I use the recipe from my 1970’s Betty Crocker cookbook. I don’t know how it varies from the Joy of Cooking recipe, or even whether it is “authentic”, but it works every time, and is probably as simple and straightforward as a stollen recipe can be.

Robin–I meant to ask whether the picture of the blackbird yesterday was intentional for the fourth day of Christmas. These days one usually hears “four calling birds”, but of course, there is no such thing as a calling bird. I have read that originally it was “colly birds” or “collie birds”, colly/collie being an old term for coal-colored or sooty, i.e. black, so the four colly birds are four blackbirds. I have also read that the “five gold (or golden) rings are in reality five golden ring-necked pheasants. This would make sense, as then the first seven gifts are all birds, with the last five being people. I never understood the seemingly abrupt change from birds to jewelry and back to birds.

SotD is Bengale Rouge, from a sample.

My husband thinks it smells okayish but it reminded him of a mediocre scented candle ?

He did not use the word mediocre, but his facial expression said ‘meh’
He also added “you own/have much better perfumes”

i admit. the first phase is indeed not THAT brilliant on me…
…..But the Bengale Rouge drydown is so good, so addictive…

Jumping on to say happy Tuesday and report SotD is Rihanna Rebelle, my chocolate strawberry happy place. It really is too much but I love it. Yesterday I felt very formal in Mugler Aura. Today I just grabbed the Rebelle lotion and that committed me before I could begin to dither in front of the “top shelf.” A few or more sprays of the edp as I was off to work, and I will be a Re-belle all day!

    Good morning!

    I’m wearing SDV again today.
It is a sunny day and I walked for the 4th day in a row (I’ve logged 17 miles over these four days). I can get used to this being off thing.

I am however slightly bored which means I’m shopping for perfume I do not need. Which brings me to my question for you guys: should I blind buy Shalimar Soufflé de Parfum? I understand it has nothing to do with the original (which is a plus for me) but does it really smell just like a lemony dessert as many reviews portray it? Because I do not like smelling like lemony dessert ?

Les Indemodables sample set is back in stock at Luckyscent in case anybody is interested (and it includes all 8 perfumes in their collection).

Most people seem to be saying the Intense version of the Souffle is better? I like lemony dessert scents but don’t remember liking the original Souffle and the Intense version isn’t available in South Africa (I don’t think).

Someone I had been in contact with a week ago told me he had subsequently tested positive so I’ve been isolating for a week and plan to be tested tomorrow. My tummy has been a bit upset for three days which COULD be a symptom but could also just be anxiety. In any case I have had to be careful with scent as my sense of smell seems heightened and I get prone to queasiness when stressed. One spray of Calacas was nice and bright for the day and something else might follow evening shower.

I tested Molton Brown’s Milk Musk edt a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. The shop did not have the edp in stock but apparently the edt is a bit sweeter and fluffier so I suspect I would prefer it. I might need to compare it to La Mia Perla – though I suspect that one is a bit woodier. What are your favourite clean and cuddly musks?

      Stay positive, test negative.

I IMd with someone at work (at home) this morning and he said he tested positive. He just felt like he had a cold and decided to get tested. He was not aware of how he was exposed. What I can tell you is that I was Zooming with another colleague and he said that testing labs could make the test more or less sensitive (he used a more scientific sounding term). I will need to read more about this.

I am rhetorically asking where did all the influenza illnesses and deaths go? Are we now all “healthier” save for COVID? ?

Social distancing and masks have luckily resulted in very little flu. It’s a good thing. The hospitals are at or over capacity here and couldn’t handle flu cases. I have seen our hospital full to overflowing in a bad flu season.

Oh, all too aware, being an internal medicine physician. It’s just that the hospitals couldn’t handle it if we had a bunch of flu on top of COVID. Unfortunately, I still can’t talk stubborn people into getting their flu shots.

      Thanks Adanst and Hajsuuri ?

Regarding testing procedures my GP told me NOT to go to a Dischem testing facility (run by a large pharmacy chain here) but an actual laboratory. I was surprised to hear that the former was running less reliable tests.

As for influenza – I know we had far less of it during our winter. This was ascribed to the precautions people were taking. Masks, sanitising and distancing were said to have reduced it – which makes sense.

South Africa had a LOWER mortality rate during the first wave (if I remember correctly) due to added police presence and patrolling. This lead to reduced crime and fewer related deaths ?

        Crossing my fingers for you.

Good move to avoid the chemist/pharmacy test. Of course this is only an anecdotal report, but my aunt did a drive through test managed by a pharmacy chain and the experience was not confidence inducing. They had people self-administer the nasal swab, rushed and did not provide sufficient instruction.

Only when my aunt got home and READ the instructions they hadn’t given her time to read, did she realize she hadn’t done it properly.

My Mom made us hotdogs and sauerkraut when we were kids. Plus her cabbage rolls are with sour cabbage and rice (and a bit of bacon); I was surprised to see any other type of cabbage rolls existed!

My hubby just cringes when I get sauerkraut at Costco; it’s all for me though!

You smell fantastic! I’ve been planning our food — NYE will be a bunch of tapas / munchies (including onion rings, which my dad used to make on NYE when I was little) and shrimp cocktail (which my dad used to buy at the grocery when I was older, but let’s say my version will be better 🙂 ). There will also be some healthier options and some from other cultures. New Year’s Day we’re going with a British theme so I can get some Yorkshire pudding in for my spouse.

I do love sauerkraut, I have to say, but maybe that’s because I lived in Germany as a kid?

No particular plans for New Year’s food here. Maybe I will make a batch of chili in the next couple of days.

And now, for something sorta kinda different. I have had homemade sauerkraut, and it is so much better than the stuff you buy at the supermarket. Then again, I grew up eating it, so maybe it was an early acquired taste for me.

The gym I used to belong to had mini trampoline classes. They are actually joint friendly but one has to check the equipment before each session, be mindful of posture and how one’s feet hit the trampoline. It was great exercise.

I can’t put garbage out the day before, because in my town, we are required to put the garbage out in bags–no cans. If I put garbage bags out the day or night before, the animals will tear into everything and make a mess.

SOTD is Gallivant Tokyo, which came as a sample with the bottle of CdG Kyoto my spouse bought me for Christmas. The Tokyo is not my cup of tea. It strikes me as a well-made version of a stereotypical “men’s” perfume. I’m not getting more than a hint of incense (though the hint was nice), nor am I really getting any of the other “Japanese” notes that are supposedly there.

The Kyoto, on the other hand, is lovely (but I already knew that). And I’ve been on buying the other wishlist bottles that I’ve decided I needed with some money I got. 🙂

Otherwise, just off for the week and a bit housebound / bored. We did go skiing yesterday at one of the resorts above the city, on the only day with sun for weeks, but I’m not sure when we’ll do that again. Yes, we were outside but a lot of the younger set were not observing any of the health orders / requirements, plus the lines were insane. My kid needs to get out and run more, but it’s hard to do with the rain.

I think we’re going to be dealing with rain for the rest of the week…typical Vancouver winter. It’s harder when the options for getting out of the house into indoor spaces are limited, though. So…much…screen time.

I woke up this morning and for some reason really craved Boris de Paradis. Well, it never needs a reason, does it? I sprayed it on and began furious sneezing. Oh no! Maybe it’s just our windy day and mold etc. from outside.

Mom tested positive for Covid. They wound up calling my brother because they couldn’t reach me. For various reasons they explained to him, they think it’s a false positive. He agreed, and he’s the microbiologist. Hope that’s true. She is asymptomatic. I had nightmares last night. Such a scary time right now. They’re having their first vaccine clinic on January 9th! Hope she can still get the shot.

I’m still having lots of pain in my hand and thumb, and problems typing. I’m doing two-finger typing. Couldn’t get an appointment for therapy until Jan 8th. Hope that will help!

Oh boy, I hope it is false positive! I need to read more about this as these themes keep coming up. I also hipe you’re able to alleviate your pain. Can you do Telehealth while waiting for in-person PT?

I so hope it’s a false positive! I’m keeping all of you in my prayers. Waiting for PT to start when you really need it is very frustrating. Maybe your ortho would approve of some very gentle stretching, say, under a heating pad?

Calypso – so sorry about the pain! I can relate to the covid nightmares – had one yesterday and I doubt we are the only ones. Hugs!

Wearing Orris Tattoo today! It seems as though iris scents are providing lots of comfort these days, for me anyways.

You smell great! I think NST is having a collective iris binge.

Well, lillyjo definitely sent the sun my way today! So thank you very much! ?? However, it was accompanied by a biting cold wind all day, so I decided to put off getting groceries and do indoor tasks today.

SOTD = Mugler Les Exceptions Supra Floral, aka a “Hajusuuri Special”, from the sample stash. I think this is my favorite of the 3 that she sent my way. I’ll have to try it again to make sure, though.

      Glad you got the sun?
I’ve got snow on the way tonight.
I only tried Supra Floral one time, and passed my sample to someone who loved it. I read some people compared it to Gucci Envy, but I didn’t think it was similar. I should revisit it.

I never tried the original Gucci Envy perfume. I did have one of its flankers in the early 2000’s, but passed that bottle along to someone else.

Woo hoo! I should do a week of the Les Exceptions.

And yes, there was a biting wind!

No SOTD yet, even though it’s late. I might put on a drop of Black Opium on one hand and Black Opium Intense on the other. I wish the Intense came in a travel spray. Hard to justify a FB. I did get my Merry Christmas to me (Le Lion de Chanel). Was surprised to get it within a few days of ordering from Chanel since the website said it was in pre-order.
Our Christmas did not end well, unfortunately. My mother-in-law was admitted a few days before Christmas with full-blown kidney failure. Things just went from bad to worse and she died the morning after Christmas. She was a really kind, funny lady and we always got on well. It’s so weird to have her gone so suddenly. My father-in-law seems to be coping pretty well, but is the stoic type and probably still in disbelief. He is being kept busy by all the little things that you have to do after someone dies. She is being cremated per plans that were already in place and we are going to have a memorial service in July (hopefully). We live 10 hours away, so everything has been at a distance, which makes it more surreal.

Dove into work today in the dregs of last night’s Coromandel and never sprayed anything else. Just took a shower so will pick out something new before an evening Zoom cocktail party with some coworkers.

No SOTD today as I have a head cold and my nose is streaming! Also sore from blowing it so much. I don’t want to waste a nice scent with all that going on!

Our newspaper said Cardin was one of the first designers not to emphasize “flattering the female form.” (The other two were Courreges and Rabanne.) Ah, modern times….
