Happy Chanel No. 5 Friday! (Yes, it’s also Friday the 13th and World Kindness Day.) Our community project for today: wear Chanel No. 5, or a No. 5 flanker, or a fragrance that is related to No. 5 in some way — it does not have to be by Chanel!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am a fail. I have at least two versions of Chanel No. 5 but I had not checked on them, much less worn them, in years, and they are not in good shape. My pathetic bid for a partial point: I’m in Chanel Misia, because Michael Edwards tells us that Misia Sert says she gave Chanel the idea for the perfume that became No. 5…

Floral or putrid

Despite sometimes being referred to as the “king of fruits,” durian is easily one of the more contentious foods out there. That’s because the stinky fruit emits an overpowering odor that tends to elicit intense feelings of love or disgust. But that’s not the only flavor you’ll sense in a sip of the pungent brandy. The spirit is also distilled from indole, an organic compound that can smell either floral or putrid depending on the concentration.

— New Hampshire-based Tamworth Distilling will launch their new Corpse Flower brandy next month. (Eau de Musc, a whiskey scented with castoreum, is available now, as is their Sierra Fig Cordial.) As I’m writing this review, it’s the day after Election Day in the United States.* We don’t discuss politics here at Now Smell This, so I’ll just say that it’s been a stressful week (and month and year) so far. The current suspense is making me wish I were somewhere other than here, somewhere other than now, although I’m not usually much of traveler.

Come to think of it, I first expressed my non-wanderlust in a review of two fragrances from Une Nuit Nomade, Rose America and Memory Motel. The description for Nothing But Sea and Sky, the latest in Une Nuit Nomade’s tribute to the beaches of New York’s Montauk, caught my eye…
