Happy Thanksgiving 2020 ~ open thread

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating today!

Whether you’re celebrating or not, feel free to talk about anything you like: what fragrance you’re wearing today, what perfume you're especially thankful for, what you’re going to cook or eat today...whatever you like, so long as it doesn’t conflict with our comment policy.

Such a weird Thanksgiving, but still have so many things I can be grateful for. Not with family, friends.. just me and my husband eating a meal from a local restaurant, which is fine. We’ve got one single neighbor on our floor that is in her 80s so my sweet husband bought flowers for her and a meal to delivery later today. And I see the sun trying to poke out — yay!

    SOTD: Coffee Break

Very happy thanksgving to my friends at NST!

Well, give your husband a kiss on the cheek from me – that’s so kind of him to arrange for a Thanksgiving meal for your neighbor.

Hi all, happy Thanksgiving! My SOTD is Fendi’s Theorema Esprit d’ Ete. I’m thankful for so many things, too many to count. 🙂 I love our little perfume community here on NST, and that’s definitely on the list of things to be thankful for.
We’re having a turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, sausage cornbread stuffing, butternut squash salad, and sweet potato pone (recipes below).
    Everyone have a lovely day!

I like the original Theorema but find the Esprit d’Ete more wearable. The Esprit d’ Ete has more citrus and musk, less spice and flowers.
I wouldn’t turn down a bottle of Theorema if I found it! 🙂

My kitchen smells like cranberry cinnamon and cloves .. starting to make the relish for today.

Didn’t pick a SOTD but maybe someone can choose for me:
    My list
    parfum sacre
    Twilly
    Or Coco

I am jealous. I did not make cranberry this year because there is not enough of a crowd, and if I make even half a recipe I will eat it all myself over the next week…I really love cranberry sauce and will eat it with anything.

So anyway, please enjoy your relish!

I see no downside to eating all the cranberries. However, as I am the only one eating them this year, too, I will be freezing half of the cranberry sauce so I can enjoy it with leftovers later on. It freezes perfectly, like freezer jam.

We Canadians have already dispensed with our version of the holiday for the year, but Happy Thanksgiving to our neighbours.

I’m wearing Parfumerie Generale Querelle, which is so strange — it smells like a bunch of scents spilled into the same bottle, the leathery fougere of Krizia Uomo and the aggressive spice of Opium Pour Homme and the ambery warmth of Stetson. It’s confusing, and sometimes it’s nice to be confused.

Halloween the 2nd Friday of October, then Thanksgiving the 2nd Thursday of November?

Then personally I think we need another holiday to be added to the middle of January.

But you also have Veteran’s Day (which we celebrate as Remembrance Day, and on the same day, November 11th) in between Hallowe’en and Thanksgiving, which is kind of lot, it seems to me, five big public holidays or celebrations (counting New Year’s Eve) mashed into just two months. Since we have our Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October, Remembrance Day fits neatly in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think it’s kind of perfect. But maybe that’s just because it’s what I’m used to.

Happy Thanksgiving to our southern neighbours! I like when we celebrate it in Canada – we’re further north so it coincides with our harvest time, it’s usually still warm and the fall colours can be at their best. And… it’s always on a Monday so a nice long weekend in October!

I reached into the back of my perfume cupboard for Nocturnes de Caron. I’ve got to wear this more often!

Pyramus this is true, but Veteran’s Day, while important, is not a festive holiday. I would like to see the festive things spread out a little more through the long cold season.

But it matters not in the least, because nobody is going to move Thanksgiving just because I say so.

SotD is Musc Ravageur and omg do I smell good! I always forget about my little decant.
My college daughter made it safely home yesterday afternoon and she and my teenager spent the afternoon and evening like two peas in a pod, giggling away. My teenager is a quiet bookworm by nature so when it’s just her here the house is pretty quiet. I love the sound of their laughter.?
I made my turkey, gravy and pumpkin pie yesterday so today it’s just everything else. Our plan is to watch the dog show and then feast.
I hope everyone has a great thanksgiving!

First, shout out to Ringthing for the pimento cheese recipe, which was just what I wanted. Scent choice for today is Atelier Silver Iris, for the festive feel and for the Community Project. It was probably my first niche, brand new, pricey purchase. I have the 100ml so definitely won’t buy again. I sure would have bought the smaller size if I knew then how many perfumes I’d eventually feel I “had” to have. But it is a big favorite because it has an assertive presence and I do get development from it. Happy Thanksgiving and thank you to everyone who is working today.

Happy Thanksgiving!? You are right about large bottles and my brain agrees with you but my heart doesn’t always follow suit. I feel like there should be waiting periods for perfume purchases kind of…you have to burn through your 10 ml decant and let 90 days pass or something to get beyond the honeymoon phase before you are approved for a FB and then it’s only the 30 or 50 ml…not the 100 ml. 😉

I now have 3 new bottles in my cart that I am pretty sure I simply cannot live without, but can I use enough of them when I look over my shoulder at my army of decants? But one of these may make my heart skip a few beats and worth all the search….and the bottles are so lovely….and yet I know I am fickle in 3 more weeks I will have another infatuation…..

SOTD is Guerlain AA Granada Salvia, which is pomegranate and blackcurrant and fits the day just right.

Is that a strong saffron scent? My HG saffron perfume cannot be bought anymore for love or money. Yesterday I tested the Byredo–Black Saffron– a light, pretty, fleeting thing that did nothing for me.

Oh gosh it is. The saffron is realistic and long lasting. I’m not sure where you get it, since it’s a Greek brand. I found it for 9.99 at Ross dress for Less. I think it runs about 48 bucks us.

Our day is little topsy turvy; we are coordinating with neighbors to take dinner to a friend who is on her own, which means that our “everything ready” time is several hours earlier than usual. I find myself with dessert (the NY Times recipe for pecan pie sandwich cookies) and cranberry sauce already finished, and my traditional side (corn pudding) already in the oven. Now am thinking about taking a nap — yesterday was my first day off since August and the relentless pace of the last few months is taking its toll. On top of all that, one of my husband’s closest friends died last night (not of COVID), and it seems impossible for him to travel to the funeral (on the other side of the country, in a COVID-19 hotspot in a state that doesn’t do restrictions — and the funeral gathering will not be small). He is understandably sad, so in a way it’s good that there’s no need to play at cheerfulness today for a houseful of company.

No scent here as yet, but I am thinking either Shalimar or Winter Palace.

And I, too, am thankful for NST and for everyone’s stories and comments. May everyone, whether celebrating a holiday or not, have a safe and lovely day.

I am in touch with my “best friend” (distinct from my husband who is also my best friend but not my “best friend” from when I was a girl) less often than ever these days. I wake up in a panic some nights wondering what I would do if I were to lose her. She’s a doctor working at a clinic at a huge university–dxing COVID every day. What a Thanksgiving for you two. It is lovely that you can focus on bringing a meal to a neighbor. Sending hugs.

They are making a turkey breast, corn casserole and yams. My younger sister and her family will not join us this year to keep my mother safe, just in case.

The only way I really like apple pie is with cheddar. And then, I like it very much, indeed. I wonder if it is a regional thing or a generational thing? I learned to eat apple pie that way from my father (b. 1923).

I picked Aire by Loewe. I think its an old bottle
I though i did not know this scent but I immediately recognize it. Its a smell from decades ago, when i still had to do homework haha ?

Its really lovely though a bit too soapy for my taste.

I’m in Bois Sacre Sandalo today for holiday prep. Damn am I pleased I bought this one. I absolutely love it.

We are only the three of us (husband and my younger son) and my mother and stepfather this holiday—and we are going to be outside for everything, sitting at two tables about 8 ft apart (I bought another outdoor heater for the second table). Odd, but okay. Even though it is cold, the sun is out.

I made chocolate truffles yesterday, and I am on duty today for cranberry torte and cranberry sauce–and setting things up outside to look festive. My husband is doing the turkey, stuffing, Brussel sprouts, and soup.

One of our happiest Thanksgivings was before we were married. It was just the two of us in our fifth floor walk-up on the upper west side of NY (signature scent then? And I had one–it was Margaretha Ley by Escada.) We did a five course holiday meal just for ourselves. We were so full from picking and testing as we were cooking all day, we could barely face the food when it was ready. Lots of laughs and leftovers.

No SOTD, yet, but I imagine whenever I get to it, it will be something spicy. I’ve reached for Tea for Two several times this week, and I’ve enjoyed it a lot each time! And it sticks around for hours, which is always a plus in my book.

Thanksgiving will be just Mr. Spicebomb and myself. My parents are elderly, and none of us have been in each other’s bubbles all that much since the start of COVID. Maybe Dad could come up, but I hate to ask him to drive on the freeway anymore. I think the thought of it scares both of us!

So, I am roasting a turkey, making stuffing, Brussels sprouts, potatoes and yams, and some cranberry sauce. There will be leftovers, which has always been my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. I will freeze half of the turkey, make some stock and enjoy turkey soup this month. I’ve decided against baking a pie, as there’s still most of two birthday cakes in the freezer from last weekend. I turned 43 on Monday. Honestly, there’s probably some pie in the freezer, too. I should dig around and see what I can find. . . I love my chest freezer!

I’m in Aesop Marrakech Extreme, many sprays. I think this will power through the ambient fragrances of the house today.

The pasta bake is in the fridge ready to go and the mayo chocolate cake is made (thank you, Wednesday self), so all that is left is garlic bread and a green salad.

It’s just the hubster and me today, but we’ll be FaceTiming the fam later this evening. I hope everyone has a lovely day, whether and howeve you are celebrating! ?

When I lived in the northeast US I learned the wisdom of pasta at the holiday table along with the turkey or ham. It was usually baked ziti, sometimes lasagne. I miss that tradition. Thank you for reminding me.

My extended famiy is doing a zoom dinner date at 5 pm tonight. My parents, especially my mother, are not fond of video calls, but she orchestrated the meeting, so that’s something to be thankful for! 🙂

Yes, an East coast and perhaps Italian-American? thing which I didn’t realize until later. My mom (not Italian-American but CT has many Italian-Americans and wonderful food/pizza and she loved Italian) used to make turkey, ham and baked ziti on Thanksgiving.?

How awesome that your mom initiated the zoom call! High tech saves the day.
I’ve not heard of pasta on the holiday table, but then I’ve spent most of my life in Texas. Does the pasta take the place of a potato dish? I can see it being great for those who don’t eat meat.

I find these cheapies challenging: they’re such a good value, it’s tempting to blind buy (and seems pointless to pay for a sample, if you can find one), but then if you don’t like it, that cheap bottle ended up being an expensive sample. On the other hand, I do enjoy the excitement of things coming in the mail and the, “Will it be great?” suspense.

Shalimar Eau de Cologne, with a bit of body lotion. Made stuffing this morning, as well as some candied yams. Bringing over to friends’ place. Small gathering of careful people, including their cousin who just got her negative results so can join us. My yams cooked down to a smaller portion than I expected, which is unfortunate. Husband will make the mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts when we get there.

The downside is they don’t have cable, so no football on in the background.

It really is nice, but then again, Chanel is almost always up my alley. When I started to read reviews before smelling it I saw that most people were comparing it to Shalimar and by extension I guess, they were calling it the most Guerlain like of all Chanels. I can’t say that I agree with that.
Anyway, it should be available soon in Europe and the US. I’m curious to see what you think of it once you smell it.

SotD = Vanille Galante because it smells like happiness to me

Good morning, fragrant friends, and happy Thanksgiving to all NSTers. I am thankful for you and for this happy place.

Let the feasting begin. This year it’s just green beans, acorn squash, and rice pilaf with the turkey – no stuffing, potatoes, rolls, or cornbread. Not because I don’t want them, but simply because it would be too much food for our small family. There will be pie – two kinds – because I baked an apple pie . . .

. . . and last evening my new-ish nextdoor neighbor, a young gentleman who lives alone, knocked on my front door. He had a melktert from our neighborhood brasserie in one hand and a bottle of Lagavulin 16 in the other. So thoughtful and over the top! He wanted to say thanks for our help as he has settled in to the neighborhood.

I adore melktert, it’s a South African custard pie, topped with cinnamon, and baked in a shortbread cookie crust. But the Lagavulin? Gosh, I don’t have an understanding of fine spirits (I grew up in a teetotaling home), and no one in my family likes whisky. Or is it whiskey? See? I know nothing. 😀

I’ll head out for a bike ride soon. My sister and her family are away, not too far away and safely quarantined, so I will pedal over and stop in at her house to check on things, then give their kitty some belly rubs.

I was laughing with delight and crying with heartbreak this morning as I read the six word memoirs of gratitude in today’s New York Times. I have to share. Here are a few:

I am thankful to be thankful.
The crinkling eye above the mask.
A furtive hug with a friend.
The backyard haircuts are getting better.
My choir still meets on Zoom.
Friends who give me streaming passwords.
Family reunion in January, before Covid.
Miss family, but safer for them.
Saved a lot of lipstick money.
More homemade pasta, no more jeans.
    No shame in elastic-waist pants.
Braless at home? No one cares.
Mom, 87, rocking pretty, pandemic ponytail.
Teenage son still likes to snuggle.
My parents live two blocks away.
No better excuse to avoid in-laws.
This stinking year is nearly over.

The Lagavulin is a single-malt Scotch – reportedly one of the very peaty ones so I have no personal experience (peat being a flavor that I avoid after trying Laphroig), but I recommend trying a very small dose, neat, and seeing how you react. You might love it.

a wee dram, then is it? 🙂 that seems to be the recommendation for those new to the ways of single-malts.

but were I to do it I’d need to have a good chase on hand, just in case.

I absolutely love the gratitude memoirs, and really need them today! Thanks for passing them on.

I’ve never had a peaty whisky, but brown liquors can be used in baking. You could possibly add a tablespoon or two of it to banana bread. That is, if banana bread does not make you run screaming down the street at this point in the pandemic. ?

Wow, 16-year-old Lagavulin! I love the stuff, but it is very smoky and peaty. I find it can be used in small doses in savory dishes, such as a creamy chowder. I would not recommend using it in desserts, unless you were making something like a burnt caramel sauce.

Happy Thanksgiving! My family celebrates on Friday. We are not eating together, but everyone lives close enough to drop off dishes to share. We bought a ton of 6 inch pie dishes so that each house can get all pie flavors. I’m baking apple and pecan.

My SOTD is Sous le Manteau Cuir d’Orient, a soft suede-y vanilla. It is one of my favorites from my sampling spree in search of The Perfect Vanilla. As it turns out, I am not as vanilla averse as I thought and found a couple other favorites- Anima Dulcis and Long Courrier.

What a good idea about the family pie dishes! Pecan pie twins – I do the brown sugar instead of dark corn syrup one; but otherwise I keep it basic.

Thank goodness my local grocery store had a buy two, get one free deal on the pie dishes! I got some funny looks carrying 15 of them to the checkout stand. I love pecan pie and will have to try brown sugar sometime. I bet the flavor is better than corn syrup.

SOTD is Nanadebary Bronze because its dark woody cinnamon note will go nicely with the Thanksgiving Day feast Mr. G is about to construct. My company always gives us T-Day plus the Friday after off, and these two extra days of rest came just in the nick of time. Happy ? Day to all who are celebrating today!

    Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! ??♥️

Wearing Solstice Scents Estate Vanilla today and burning a B&BW Sugared Pecan Pie candle.

Floragal shared yesterday she was burning the Catskills candle below and now I am debating this one and others on their website. No affiliation and haven’t heard of Brooklyn Candle before actually but their candles look wonderful. They have sales going too of course. 🙂 I ordered a few candles from B&BW a month or two ago after not having burned anything in a while and feel like they are my gateway to other drugs/candles. Burning them has been very comforting. I also bought a wick trimmer from Amazon which has been a source of delight. 😉

SOTD Teone R Shakti. Reading her notes, is it a homage to Coromandel. I am not able to do a side to side comparison but I quite like it. There is some unexpected greenery in the dry down, and usually it would annoy me, but this one is quite nice.
We usually have a small thanksgiving, so nothing new here. I will make duck breast and rewarm duck confit (we usually get a smoked turkey but were not able to get it because of COVID), and one time I cooked turkey was a disaster that scarred me for the rest of my life. Will make potatoes: https://damndelicious.net/2014/02/14/garlic-smashed-potatoes/, asparagus and Brussels sprouts. And chocolate lava cakelettes for desert.

I just tried Shakti as well recently and to me it smelled nothing like Coromandel. There was a sour green note that really put me off too, kind of like Amouage Bracken. I much prefer her Tantra scent.

Woke without an alarm at 5:20, a little after my usual time, sprayed a new perfume, got back in bed and was out for another 4 hours. Divine.

Enjoying my coffee and some morning reading. In a minute I’ll head up to start cooking:

    – Stout-braised short ribs
    – Balsamic-braised red cabbage
    – Possibly pearl onions or shallots, if grandma remembered to buy them
    – Horseradish mashed potatoes

No dessert. It’s just the two of us, and we mutually decided we didn’t need any.

We’ll do a Zoom call with some family later.

Grandma turned on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for a few minutes, then quickly turned it off. It’s never been my thing, but did seem a bit sad without crowds of onlookers.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I have never really cared for Thanksgiving dinner and since it is just me, can have whatever I like. I made some Cowboy Cookies a while ago and froze the dough, so I sliced and baked some today. For dinner I will either have pho or leftover scampi, I haven’t decided.

On Tuesday I got a new kitten, his name is Dapper. He has the loudest purr ever and of course is a ball of energy. The dog and Bertie Wooster like him and Scout, the other cat, is hissing and growling at everyone, including me.

I have taken advantage of some of the sales, Saks had TF Bitter Peach on sale and a cashback place gave me an additional 16%, and Bloomie’s had Pivoine Suzhou for $106 plus 10% cashback. These are my Christmas presents to me, nobody ever gives me perfume.

Going out for a walk and then watching the dog show and putting up the outdoor Christmas decorations. Have a wonderful day, everyone!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Sotd – A (sacrilegious?) layering of Profumum Roma Patchouly with Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue. I wish I liked the Patchouly more on its own (an expensive impulse purchase) but I am trying to find a way to work with it. Any other layering suggestions would be much appreciated.

Mr. allo is making leg of lamb with what seems to me a dangerous amount of garlic. Even if the garlic does me in, it’s a risk I’m willing to take. And I’m very grateful he is doing the majority of the cooking today (and most days!). I’ll contribute roasted Brussels sprouts later.

And speaking of recent newsworthy owl sitings, we’re going to check out a Snowy Owl who has taken up residence on a house nearby. It’s such a treat to see one up close.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate! I hope everyone here has as good a day as you can. I’m not even sure how to carefully phrase well wishes when so many folks are having a difficult time. But virtual *hugs* to those who want or need them. I appreciate the people of this community. 🙂

I’ve been bird-watching, but haven’t seen any owls like allo has. I think I mentioned here that I’d ordered a guide to the birds of Pennsylvania. That came Tuesday, and Dad and I are taking turns looking at it. I said it was a Christmas present for both of us, and a birthday present for him. 🙂 Dad’s birthday is a week from Christmas, so it gets overshadowed.

We recognize the familiar birds with more distinctive markings at the feeders. The “little brown jobs” are tougher, but I think the one with the black and white stripes on its head is a white-crowned sparrow. We had seven mourning doves on the ground below the feeder, checking for birdseed that had fallen. And a red-bellied woodpecker stops by at the feeder pretty regularly.

That sounds like so much fun neyronrose! We have a very active bird feeder but it is just a little too far from the window to make out darker birds unless I use the binoculars. My husband is very good at identifying birds but I am pretty hopeless.

?Happy Thanksgiving to all NST’ers who celebrate and a special? to Robin for providing this lovely place!

SOTD is vintage Lagerfeld KL, my traditional Thanksgiving Day fragrance. Its cloves and cinnamon notes complement the foods of the day, and it’s so potent only the tiniest spritz is needed.

Due to the uncertainty of today’s pandemic, I decided to skip my usual Thanksgiving Day celebration this year, and instead, ordered turkey and all the fixings from a nearby restaurant. Dropped off half at my son’s house and enjoyed a brief visit. We will Zoom later over ?. Came home and enjoyed our meal – it was fantastic, better than I anticipated. I may never go back to the way it was before, not to mention all the time I saved putting it all together! Instead I relaxed and watched Macy’s parade and the dog show, never had time for that before. I did make and share my usual Harvest Squash and Mushroom soup, but that was all.

Sharing my joy with you in announcing the arrival of 2 grand kittens ??who joined my son’s household yesterday. A brother and sister, just 4 months old, I was lucky to catch a peek at them today when we dropped off the food and it made my day! One kitten for each grandchild, definitely a wonderful happening to brighten this dismal year and an additional reason to Give Thanks.?

In Thanksgiving news, who ever thought that bubbles is the word of the year with a brand new meaning? Okay, I just made that up but I don’t think I would be that far off. We made a family bubble of the sisters, brothers in law and nephew, literally everyone (6) in the immediate family who live within 10 miles of each other. We had takeout Seasons 52 thanksgiving dinner and desserts from my sister (she made chocolate chip cookies) and I brought a variety of sweets I ordered online. We were socially-distant inside with all sorts of precautions other than wearing a mask when not eating (not.doing.this).

We made alternate plans for Christmas – we’re meeting Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day since one of my niece’s workplace is stringent about traveling out of state – they don’t care where but you will be required to quarantine 14 days, no pay since she is an hourly-paid physical therapist.

My turkey was thawed in time this year! It turned out ok, but dry because I overcooked it. I made an emergency turkey phone call to my chef cousin, because I felt the little pop up thing was defective and I don’t have a meat thermometer.
My first time ever making sweet potato casserole came out pretty good. My daughter was very excited to see brown sugar in the house and promptly made homemade lip scrub!

Happy Thanksgiving/Indigenous People’s Day from Michigan. I couldn’t resist the 88 cents/lb turkeys at the grocery store last weekend, so I roasted a 12 pounder with apples and onions in the cavity, and made mashed potatoes, creamed corn casserole, fresh cranberry sauce and a small casserole of turkey sausage and rice dressing. Enough Turkey left overs for a month of Turkey sandwiches, curried turkey, etc. Adorable hubby and I ate while zooming with MIL and her new Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua cross puppy. Cute as a hyperactive bug- that woman is a glutton for punishment. And also oldest sister and her partner, who is camera shy but kept up a running commentary about everything in the background. I love them all, but not the most relaxing Turkey dinner! SOTD = DSH lovely Chypre, Vers la Voute Etoilee, still present after all that cooking. Now watching a bit of The Crown and winding down for bed.

I’ll probably make wild mushroom and truffle risotto for dinner tonight, as it’s a favorite of one of my daughters. And if anyone insists on leftover turkey to go with it, that works!
