Tuesday scent of the day 11/17

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2020 255 Comments

Tuesday, plus International Students' Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still digging around in my big bowl of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz samples. Today's pick: Flores Bonitas y Corazones Rotos, from the Frida Kahlo series.

Reminder: on 11/20, for Bo Derek's birthday, wear a perfume that you would rate an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Unfortunately, yes – not much longevity on me at all and that’s saying a lot, I have scent-glue skin! I get four hours max.

I can only smell the No 19 parfum after a few hours. The 19 Poudre is just gone..or is it there and I can’t smell it because of the musk maybe?

Lovetosmellgood – I think it vanished on me quite soon too. A pity because it was the only 19 that really worked for me. Eau Premiere is the only no.5 and it doesn’t have great lasting power but enough to make it a viable purchase.

I love Asja but don’t wear it nearly as often as I’d like. Enjoy the Fendi! It reminds me of the holidays in a good way.

Ha!!! Good point! Maybe I’ll just spray liberally from now on so people will keep their distance. I had to ask someone to please back up at the grocery store a few days ago. She was much taller than me and hovering right behind me, completely ignoring the dot on the floor showing where she should stand. Ugh!

Ik think I wore it last Sunday. Not surprises you like it so much, it’s a fruity chypre after all, just like l’Ame perdue.

Have you tried Thérèse by Malle? It’ s in a similar vein.

        Yes
I need to try it more often though, i remember liking it a lot but it was not a love at first sniff.
But its also a scent that i thought was better after a few hours.

Btw, good to hear you enjoy your new hometown!
Its been a while since I moved to another town/city, but I remember the joy if discovering a new neighborhood and surroundings.

I have drained a 10 ml spray from a generous NSTer in record time and am down to maybe 2-3 ml.

Was talking yesterday to a good friend of mine who has two uncles quite ill w/ Covid in the Muskegon, MI area. 🙁 My heart goes out to all those with sick loved ones. And big hugs to all those worried and anxious as I am too.

Perris Monte Carlo Tubereuse Absolue, my very favorite tuberose and the only one I could see myself wearing often (my “11” tuberose). They only sell those giant 100 ml bottles of it, though, so it’s samples only for me for now.

I’m wearing DSHperfumes Sweet Pine Tar which is very enjoyable, but maybe not an 11, for the category of pine fragrances – doesn’t smell like solvent or cleanser, but does remind me of my dad’s wood shop and then as it dries down, of evergreens outdoors.

No one has yet captured my most favorite smell of all: pine trees in the sun on a warm summer day. So incredible.

I’m wondering if that is the same scent I’m looking for – when you’re in a pine (needle tree) forest, and there is this fairly sweet swell, but you can never figure out where exactly it’s coming from (I’ve smelled bark, the ground, everything….). At any rate, the closest I’ve found to it is Une Nuit a Doha, which I go on about all the time. I’ve tried other tree fragrances (wearing Sequoia right now), but they don’t capture that hot day forest smell.

Yes, I think that’s the smell. It’s sweet, but not candy sweet. It’s so beautiful. I’ll definitely look for a sample of Une Nuit a Doha. Thanks.

AG Nuit Etoilee in the EdT concentration has a very nice sun-warmed pine needle note. The EdP is much more about the immortelle and spices. Those 2 perfumes are not interchangeable!

So from the almost city slicker here, anything that smells wet (earthy, not aquatic) green / forestry / tingly = pine. It is actually spruce, according to Fragrantica.

A story in The Guardian today about a study to recreate the scents of Europe throughout hustory from the time of the plague to modern days.

Wearing Songes. The poor flustered male blackbird that turned up with one fledgling to feed, now has a second fledgling: two balls of feathers demanding “feed me” . I wonder how much longer this goes on for, before the juveniles can feed themselves?

We just grabbed a quick bite at McDonald’s. Boy, were we disappointed. To find a fast food place that let’s you dine in, it was freezing inside and the food was literally served lukewarm. Called corporate to complain about that. It wasn’t even that busy so have the place that cold and to be serving cold food like that. I really hate complaining but that was beyond ridiculous.

    Hi all!

SOTD is a dupe of the internet hypebeast, Baccarat 540. The dupe is Ambery Saffron. The dupe was made by an internet brand called Dossier. They include a full bottle and a sample bottle. You use the sample bottle first; if you like it , then you keep the full bottle. If not, you send the bottle back.

Now, I know dupes are not exact, don’t necessarily use the same ingredients or fixatives, but you should get an overall impression of the scent. With all that said, Ambery Saffron is very light, very clean and very fresh.

There is a review on Fragrantica that says that:
“…The more I sniff, the more it reminds me of how I smelled as a child after wash day. An 8 hour long process of shampoo, conditioner, royal crown, pink lotion, creme satin press, a hot comb, and plastic barrettes on the ends of my braids. After all that, this was the smell of me.”

And this is bang on. This dupe of 540 is very reminiscent of the smell of shampoo and Afro hair care products, but with an airy cloud of minerally & smoky vibes. I don’t hate it. It’s rather nice!

I will order the official sample ( I stupidly realized that LuckyScent does this) and compare and contrast. But given the cost of the dupe ($39) I could have bought Philosophy’s Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, an ambroxan-y, carmelly scent that while does not smell the same, seems to have the same cosy, clean, suede-y, fresh from the salon vibe and better performance.

If you have tried this, what do you think (the real thing OR a dupe?)

Avoiding work/study in Sequoia, used up one of my decants today. Speaking of international students, I just got offered to teach a bunch of them – but I’ll decline, so my colleagues can take the classes and get to a full time schedule since I’m also a student (it’s very, very hard to teach international students online when they are scattered around the globe). Happy Tuesday! A friend of mine and I are going to try to figure out if your two families can zoom-watch the next episode of GBB together (different continents, different streaming platforms) – the only plus of the pandemic is that we are actually socializing globally sometime, which we would have not done before.

My body butter(s) arrived yesterday. The descriptions are a story, but they don’t always match the fragrance I imagine I will receive. The latest one smells like gingerbread. But, there is definitely more to it. A giant tub of gingerbread ?.

Merlin, if you are listening, thanks for your thoughts yesterday. My cancel came from family. Tore me to shreds for the first few years, but I am very grateful for the people and ? ? in my life. Almost overnight due to a death in the family. I did a lot of soul searching and saw how I could have done things differently. That came after my ‘I’m always right. ‘ period. The door is always open, but I can’t let myself forget.

On a lighter note, I once asked my father to describe me, as he assigned attributes to my other siblings. He said “Happy. You are always happy. ” Do you know how much I love wearing Happy? ???

I should see how that works with gingerbread. ?
    Happy Tuesday, all!

AnniePerfumes I’m sorry you went through such a traumatic period. Unless a person acts repeatedly in a malicious/callous manner, or is so systematically misleading that any exposure to them is bound to be detrimental (to ones wellbeing) I don’t think such measures are justified. As much as you missed that member of your family, they too have missed out on having a relationship with you and I suspect that is a big loss on their part – even if they do not think of it this way.

      A happy disposition is a GREAT personality trait…and now I’m wanting gingerbread…

Testing the new Kerosene scent, Sweetly Known. It’s quite interesting, as it’s definitely a gourmand, but there is what smells like a resinous pine scent in the background. This is not listed in the notes however: The notes feature cardamom, cocoa, sugar, burnt caramel, vanilla and musk.

Maybe it’s the cardamom? Anyway, it’s not excessively sweet, mostly I get the sugar and I’m guessing cardamom. Cocoa and musk notes are subtle.

SOTD = Serge Lutens Fourreau Noir

I have the sleek travel atomizer. The scent and packaging total up to 12 but I am docking 1 point off for the name not being anywhere on the travel spray.

You’ll want to see my windup owl ?, just saying…

In other news, everything is settled for the NJ end of things regarding Thanksgiving – food ordered, venue confirmed, just have to pick up the food on the day of. Then ?, and not that we’re changing our plans, our brother implored us not to gather. I am paraphrasing here — “Current COVID spread is predominantly from small gatherings. Every COVID case strains the medical systems.” OK, anything new here? How about mass gatherings – take your pick of protests vs celebrations vs whatever you want to call them, mask or no mask and unlikely socially distant? Will we have the police or monitors knock on doors to do a head check, ID check etc. to see if we’ve violated any rules? WTH?

But, be that as it may, no gatherings (that large anyway) and she is also under quarantine as one of her students did not disclose that his father was showing symptoms and the kid kept going to school … I don’t know how she eventually found out but the father was COVID+

Thanksgiving is giving many of us a lot of stress. Mom’s place is still wrapped up tight and so I can’t go join her there for the nice meal they put on at noon. They just serve everyone now in their own room.I usually make a nice meal here for friends but no one is willing to go eat in someone else’s house right now. I’ll probably still make a nice meal and deliver little packets to my friends. I saw a chart showing the astronomical rise in cases after Thanksgiving in Canada and it was sobering.

Oh good. I may do all my errands on Saturday and hunker down for a few days. The only thing is that I am supposed to have my car inspected this year in November ? but I am still waiting for my Vehicle Registration card. All paid for but just has not arrived! I’m hoping I would get a sticker saying I’m excused. The car is only 8 years old and barely tops 36000 miles (I need to double check).

I am wearing St. Clair Scents Pharaoh’s Passion today. It’s grown on me but still has this one sour note that puts me off. Our weather is (finally) gorgeous–74 and pure air with no humidity and a robin’s-egg blue sky. I’m sitting on my porch with a glass of white wine and some cats.

Running late today! It’s been one of *those* days, plus a cold one to boot.

Also, today is Gordon Lightfoot’s 82nd birthday.

No sneezing today! We changed the filter in the HVAC unit. Not sure if we changed it last in March or June (ooops), so it was definitely time. I think that some vacuuming I did may also have helped.
