Thursday scent of the day 11/5

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2020 277 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, SWINTON’s birthday and Guy Fawkes Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Traversée du Bosphore.

Reminder: 11/6 will be Nostalgia Friday...wear something that takes you back to a happy moment in your childhood. Suggested by starling.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Nicolai Le Temps d’une Fête. So wonderfully green and retro! While I do not associate it with any memory, it still smells nostalgic.

I think it is beautiful, but I would not call it joyful, at least not entirely. A mix of happiness and a delicate melancholy.

True, its pretty melancholic. But it also reminds me of spring ? and the promise of warmer and longer days. ☀️
And thats a joyful thought for me right now ?

SotD is Pavillon Rouge, by Jovoy.
    From a sample

(when i purchased L’âme perdue they added a handful of samples, and a nice card game with questions about perfume…in french…so i can practice both my french and test my knowledge of perfume?

I did not know what to expect from Pavillon Rouge, never heard or read anything about it, but geeee, this is a pleasant surprise!

A Slightly boozy, woody, tobacco-ish leather, with the right amount of vanilla. Smells like a cabinet where booze and cigars are stored. Yum ?
Not very innovative but its well balanced and comforting.
Just what I needed on this cold autumn day. ?

Sotd, Oscarine from a sample which I have liked and just learned they sell a 7.5 ml..post election gift to myself? Lol news said online purchases soared Tuesday. I know I made a couple, take out food, lol.

Trying to let go and move on from the election emotional “hangover” that I am having. Hopefully, emotions will settle with all of us, we will come together and move on.

    Perfumed, comforting hugs to all.

        Hmm a post election gift….
Do we Europeans get one as well?
        Maybe smaller…but while
i am not from the USA, the presidential election is keeping me (and lots of other Dutchies) busy, awake and worried as well. ?

Forgive me Donnatella, for I have sinned. I bought the Clinique Happy set this morning from Ulta. The price by itself was too good to pass up but the 5x points and $15 off made the price even better. I am in Deneuve extrait this morning. After my shower, I will probably switch to something else. I am just worn out by this election and at this point, I know there is nothing I can do about it now.

New sheets are such a pleasure though. Not many things I can think of are quite as luxurious as crisp, fresh and beautiful sheets. My fantasy for if I ever had an army of servants and a chateaux in wherever would be freshly laundered sheets that have been sun dried on a field of lavender every day. Sigh.

In the office today and falling asleep in front of my computer monitor. I can barely keep my eyes open despite all the coffee I have been drinking.

I did some big online shopping damage as soon as I arrived to the office very early this morning. I bought 6 pairs of shoes: sneakers and loafers and I am wondering now what possesed me to buy so many. But my birthday is coming soon and I have been on an almost no-buy this year. Some perfumes from my long wish list may be added later. I wonder where my sense of responsibility has gone. I am just too tired and stressed of everything around me this year, but still I can’t justify it.

Wearing the last drops of my decant of Lancome Lavandes Trianon. Very comfy and enjoyable. One of the few vanilla scents I really like.

Back to work now, but at least we have a beautiful warm and sunny day today. Ready for a walk at lunch time and happy that I don’t have to come back to the office any time soon, I hope!

    Happy almost Friday, everyone! ??

I’m still commando, and a bit bleary eyed for no particular reason except that last Sunday, hubbie and I went to pick up our wine club shipments, and I had every intention of quitting one of them after this shipment, but seeing the winery person humming to herself as she put our stuff together….couldn’t do it. The next winery is just two guys, very small….can’t do that one. The last one I is the one I actually like….long story short, yesterday for dinner I opened one of the bottles and had one glass of wine – and today I feel like I partied all night long, when in fact I was watching the great British bake off in my slippers with a cup of peppermint tea! 🙂

SOTD is Armani Privé Gardenia Antigua again, with a dab of Eau d’Italie Baume du doge from the sample that arrived today. I think I need a bigger dab to assess it. But I understand the one review that says it smells like a candle. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.

Bought a “love yourself” poster as my latest potential date dumped me.

My last date stumbled into the meeting place looking like he was wearing a truss and could barely walk. Bald man who was disappointed that I cut my longer hair. Spent the entire time on the phone calling someone “bro”. Was at least 65, too old to call someone bro, lied about his age, and left rudely and abruptly after being a jerk to the waiter. Apparently didn’t have a job either. Very picky these men, with not much going on.

I have been MIA for some time now, but the stress of this election cycle has kept me away from the computer!! Now for something completely different–has anyone made Irish Barmbrack (cake/bread)? I stumbled across a recipe that looks simple enough for me (NOT a baker), but wanted to see if anyone else has advice/ideas/reviews…

Spritzing a little Chergui to run to CVS and the library…will check in later. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Well, I just went down a bit of a Barmbrack rabbit hole! Never heard of this kind of bread, but it looks similar to fruitcake, only lighter.
It looks like some recipes are yeast based and some use baking powder. I’d suggest trying a baking powder recipe first, if you’re not an experienced baker. Those recipes assemble like a quick bread, which are pretty simple. Just don’t overmix the batter and you’ll do great! Keep us posted on how it goes if you don’t mind. I’m curious!

No nostalgia again for me. Shalimar Eau de Cologne after shower and citrus goat milk lotion. 8 sprays. Not near enough. I will keep spraying.

Learned something yesterday. Don’t go overboard in the lavender scented mothball products when you store away winter woolens in space bags. Whoa!!! I hand washed two sweaters and ran the air filter like crazy yesterday. It was overpowering. I’m now afraid to open other bags.

It’s warm and humid outside, so I’m in Arielle Saturday. It also serves as a contrast to the yummy smell of the pot of beans on the stove!

I finished Minor Mage last night, by T. Kingfisher. I also read A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking last week. They were both perfect and easy reads for these times, and I would not have known about this author without NST. Thanks Robin, for the reading/movie/listening polls! ?

Apsara, what’s the fragrance of this product like? I grabbed a L’Oreal conditioner when I ran out of my usual product during my last long-term overseas gig, and I couldn’t get used to the fragrance: very strong, very lingering, very not-one-I-liked. But hooo boy do I have grey now, so am following these suggestions!

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkin_(cake)

CP Day here, Friday. When I was a kid Guy Fawkes was really a big event in our family, and with friends in the street ( the English born ones) . We’d have huge bonfire, make and burn a Guy, eat treacle toffee and parkin, and light fireworks. The downside was that we were in NZ where is didn’t go dark until almost 9pm. Now guy fawkes has almost ceased to exist as a private event , due in large part to restrictions on fireworks. So, last night I heard about three rockets and that was it…and I don’t miss the fireworks ( my dogs hate them going off) . The idea that guy fawkes was all about the gunpowder plot, and burning a human was so extreme in my imagination when I was little, so bloodthirsty and terrible, and yet also exhilirating in a strange way…huge fire.
Anyway, enough nostalgia..parkin is oats, treacle ( molasses) and ginger , dark and sticky but becomes dry. So, a spicy perfume Rousse.

Yes, so true. Many of the public holidays that are “celebrated” have a very dark side, especially in places with a colonial background that impacted negatively on indigenous populations.

I loved Guy Fawkes night when I was a kid. We used to go to the neighbouring family’s house and have popcorn while our fathers set off fireworks – it was so exciting! We didn’t have a guy or bonfire, so I never thought about the reason behind the fireworks. They were also little things back then, not the artillery that people set off now that frighten animals.
      I still love fireworks 🙂

    SOTD = Tauerville Incense Flash

Woody incense ❤️. It’s been incense week, other than No.19 EDP which, on Nov. 3, acted like incense. In any case, I will think of what to wear for the CP but will likely “fail it” because while I have many many happy memories, I don’t associate them with any perfumes.

The Kenzo one only had 2 perfumes so it was 95% brand, 5% perfume. The Penhaligon’s is definitely selling the brand but with 10 perfumes, there’s a lot more to evaluate and it 20% brand, 80% perfume.

Friday here, and watching the US election with fascination. I’ve decided on Le Galion Sortilège, it’s not nostalgic in a personal sense, but has the vintage vibe that I enjoy.

LOL! I haven’t even smelled Secretions Magnifique, but I’ve heard that many other people have a different opinion about that particular fragrance. And he loves perfumes that smell like a barnyard. Some friends of mine joked that taking care of horses will give someone an ‘Eau de Barnyard’ scent for free. 😀 LT also talks about narcissus absolute somewhere, and how he adores how indolic it is. Other folks’ opinions vary quite a lot on that sort of scent, too.

Sure, and some people DO like it, but the point is that perfumery is just SO subjective. I feel good when my views coincide with those in ‘The Guide’ but when they don’t I just remind myself of some of the weirder ratings to feel better. It’s a win-win 😀

In L’Attesa (Masque Milano) as part of my Week of New Samples. (The samples are not new to me, but I’ve not yet worked my way through them.) I like this one very much, but not enough to put it on the OMG want NOW list. It does just about fit the CP for me, because I get a powdery floral note that reminds me of my grandmother’s vanity shelf.

    Other samples of the week:
Sunday, ELDO Cologne. I liked it. My husband liked it. As a light fragrance we could share, maybe worth thinking about.

Monday, CdG Zagorsk. Very very appealing, but perhaps so little staying power on me that I cannot even contemplate buying it. (The one “no staying power but will buy anyway” in my life is 28 La Pausa.)

Tuesday, Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre. Oh, do I love this one.

Wednesday, no new sampling — just a touch of my rollerball of Stella.

This morning, prior to shower (after which, L’Attesa), two flops: Fresh Pomegranate Anise, which just very quickly went to overscented shampoo accord on me, and Caron Aimez Moi, which was nice enough but did not quicken my pulse. I am glad, in fact, to have tested two that I don’t like. I was beginning to fear that I’d lost my ability to decide what I do and do not like.

Figuring out how to make that GBBO chocolate Jiggly cake for four, I don’t need a huge one, plus I want to cover up the taste of the cream cheese. Last Saturday I ventured to L’occitane on a sniff-out for the Verveine Mandarine Christmas products. Very nice, juicy scent. I grabbed the hand cream and the soap. Will report back on the Yves Rocher seasonal products soon! Hope to get to that shop this weekend.

Then I went to BBW and bought a few shower gels. I had coupons for everything so it wasn’t too much damage. I’m just so stressed and tired. My county is really getting hit by covid right now. Wearing Ombre Leather over Heavenly for strength and comfort. Body butter is Rica Bourbon and Cavendish layered with Heavenly.
I caved post-election, as well. Rica body is having a 20% off sale, using BATHBREAK, N/A. So, I purchased three Rica body butters, I am trying one new fragrance, Agave and Cactus Flower, another Bourbon and Cavendish (yummy bourbon and leather) and Salt and Brine, which really smells to me like a very pretty fragrance. Not at all beach or marine vibe.
I bought another bottle of Romance and Romance lotion to layer with it, if that makes sense. Very pretty.

Feeling a tad guilty, so I will put one away for Christmas.
    Maybe. ?

    Hello!

I’m not feeling as stressed right now as I have been on and off during the last couple of days. I haven’t gone out yet today, but I made pancakes in the morning and tried a simple bok choy recipe in the afternoon. Even Mom was trying bites of the cooked bok choy with sauce, and seemed to like it well enough. Now I want to get pork so I can marinate it in char siu sauce. 🙂 I didn’t know that giving pork that flavor was such a relatively easy thing to do.

I noted early this morning that I’d been using Serge Lutens Encens et Lavande as my bedtime fragrance for the last couple of evenings. I’ll probably go with something with lavender and/or incense again this evening, as those are soothing scents for me.

    Take care, folks!

I didn’t think I’d actually pick up with cooking like I have, but Mom’s Crohn’s disease has been flaring up for several months, and I often don’t feel like going out at rush hour to pick up a takeout meal. So I’ve been like, “Let me just acquire some ingredients and make dinners for us a few times a week.” I feel like I’m accomplishing something for myself and for the household, so that’s good. 🙂

Thank you for your good wishes! 🙂

SOTD is Joy by Jean Patou.

My late grandmother wore this perfume. I remember accompanying my Dad on last minute Christmas shopping trips, and returning with that bottle with the white label.

I didn’t remember the smell. When I saw it was being discontinued, I knew I would regret never having the opportunity to wear it. So I got a bottle, wondering if I would uncover some olfactory memory.

    Nope.

She always had a cloud of smoke around her. As I reflect, it’s her Salem 100s that occupy my scent memory. But I will always associate the idea of Joy with her.
