Wednesday scent of the day 10/28

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2020 191 Comments

Hump Day and International Animation Day. (And the splitmeet is still open!) A few birthdays: Erasmus, Levi Coffin, Auguste Escoffier, Edith Head, Evelyn Waugh, Jonas Salk. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm staying calm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Tea and Charcoal.

Reminder: on 10/30, we're doing Emotionally scented...wear a perfume that gives you a strong emotional response (it makes you laugh, cry, feel sad, or becomes part of your armor to face the world, etc). Suggested by johanob, who gave the example of Guerlain L’Heure Bleue, which makes him feel sad.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m giving myself until ten o’clock to stop being lazy, as I have a ton of paperwork to do. I spritzed on some 24 Faubourg. The perfume that makes me feel extra fancy. Even the name is fancy. I remember the first time I heard of it thinking what the heck is a Faubourg? Lol.. obviously, I am not fancy. The sun is out and I’m off to face my fears, with intermittent NST breaks, of course ?

Fancy Is as fancy does! And since you‘re wearing a fancy scent (and asking questions about them) – you must surely be fancy!

      Potential definition for Faubourg
Faubourg def.: from the french ‚faux‘ and ‚bourg‘. Medieval style building made to look like a castle to intimidate potential attackers.

By the way, a bit of web searching just made me realise Faubourg IS an actual thing. Or rather three. Just learnt something new, although I am now slightly confused about locations of district in and out of city walls…

      Faubourg
      n. A district lying outside the original city limits of a French-speaking city or a city with a French heritage.
      n. A suburb, especially a part of a French city immediately beyond its walls; also, in many cases, a quarter formerly so situated, but now within the limits of a city: as, the Faubourg St. Germain, Faubourg St. Antoine, etc., of Paris.
      n. A suburb of a French city; also, a district now within a city, but formerly without its walls.

Doused heavily in LAVS by Unum to use up the remainder of a sample vile. Making a goal to clear through my sample drawer during lockdown in the spirit of Marie Kondo (which has already resulted in pulling the trigger on a few full sizes – so maybe not the most effective exercise haha)

There is always the danger of that happening! LAVS Unum is just gorgeous, you smell great! I have used three samples of this perfume and will not pull the trigger on a full bottle because it is a big bottle(100 mls) and it is currently $210, a bit on the spendy side.

Someone told me that 2nd hand and vintage shops have done very well from her method! ?

I read it and did it some years back but I think she actually advises against buying organisers and other such equipment. The focus is on purging.

      Woohoo sleep!

I wound up chatting with one of my best friends earlier this week about sleep habits and supplements cuz… Let’s be real, the stress is A Thing. She’s a personal trainer with a lot of additional certification in nutrition etc and her boss is also an information mine.

She recommended to me to start with cutting off my caffeine earlier, dimming/lights bedtime moding phone and computer at Sundown, and starting off with magnesium glycinate supplementation before adding anything else.

We’ll see how that goes, I am happier to try behavioral modification than taking a whackload of pills!

I saw that!!! I actually have the Monsoon body cream because he included it when I ordered the full bottle. I have 3 of his artist collection creams: Monsoon, Black Flower Mexican Vanilla and Desert Rose. In case anyone is wondering, they are beautifully scented and very thick, luxurious and moisturizing.

Those sets look great – I would recommend them to anyone. (And if BDMV and Earth Mother are included, I will be gifting them at Christmas.).

It’s so gorgeous. I usually don’t like “rose” fragrances unless there’s soil or thorns or something “weird” in them, but Desert Rose
is roses, light and fruit. It reminds me a bit of the rose products from The Body Shop in the 80s, when they were straight up rose. The peach and lemon are noticeable, but it all blends together so well. I am buying a bottle when my no buy is over.

Okay, after a couple of hours on skin, here’s what I got: kind of animalic (civet?), some incense, smells a lot like Shalimar. No sweetness to speak of (maybe a tiny bit of amber). Pleasant enough but I won’t need more than my small decant. Very happy to have tried it though!

It was about 80% Shalimar 20% Coromandel Lite in the drydown for me. I think it’s very well done but my brain categorized it as Shalimar very quickly…the “we’ve smelled this before and we know the name” thought popped immediately into my head. My brain and I are keeping track of perfumes we have sniffed together you see. 😉

I hear Germany & France are locking down again as well. In Québec it started October 1st and has been extended thru end of November. It’s going to be a rough winter, as I expected.

Yes, new lockdown measures announced in Germany today. Starting Monday. It’s going to be a difficult winter. At least in summer you could meet people outside, have windows open and be safe(ish). The cold makes all of those options so much more difficult.

I went to the Grand Canyon this weekend. Nice to see but it was very cold lol. I was in Utah so I thought I would make the trip down. I was silly and went to the North Rim without doing enough research I guess..I didn’t know I would have to go through mountains with snow and ice lol. And yes, I called road condition phone line as well as the park itself and they said all roads, weather were just fine and to come on down…..:p. So much ice built on the car that my doors froze shut for a while. It was 13f. Lol. I don’t recommend this drive in late October lol. West Rim is actually best for viewing but I thought since I was only 2.5 hrs from it, why not go? 2.5 hrs ended up being 4.5 hrs one way cause of weather lol. Lesson learned.

Currently commando but I am on an orange blossom kick lately..any favorites from you guys? 🙂

Any of those National Parks past Mid October is not good news road wise unless you are experienced with winter driving conditions- the shift in conditions is VERY swift.

Thanks me too. A friend of mine said there are these luxury bus tours from vegas to west rim for like 100 bucks or something, with meals and snacks included. Not bad. I am from Reno/Tahoe originally so that probably helped me get through it all lol. Still sucked haha.

SOTD = Gorilla Perfumes Smell of Weather Turning and L’AP Safran Troublant

Not layering. I started with Smell of Weather Turning which went poof at the 2 hour mark and then I wore Safran Troublant. To the extent there were remnants of SOWT, it became a nice background for Safran Troublant.

I was fit to be tied this morning. I discovered that 2 pieces of mail that I put in my mailbox EARLY LAST WEEK was shoved in out of sight and I only saw them when I put 3 more pieces to be mailed. For the love of God – WHY??? I thought the mail person passed when it looked like mail was being picked up and now THIS? I will have to speak to the Post Office but it seems like I’ll be on the losing end due to possible retaliation. ? ? ?

    Brrr!

    1) In my post exercise spritz of Red Apple, Peony and Cashmere Wood scent from beauty pie- I smell like fruity/floral clean shampoo, which is nice!

    2) Okay, I did it, I did it- I bought an exercise bike, despite living in Bike City (Portland) It’s not a Peleton, because that is a mortgage payment, but a great value brand I found on Amazon. I am redoing my little home office (moving it upstairs with a dedicated server, painting, lights) and putting the bike and weight set there (there is a closet where they can hang out.) I am thinking during the rainy winter and possibly second wave of this I can use this for stress relief. *cross fingers for no second wave*

    3) Query: there are these ‘inspired by’ copycat perfume brands out here on the internet- have any of you tried them? Am looking to try the Baccarat 540 rouge knock off since the original is like $300.

I agree it’s “brrr!” here lately! Approving heartily of the exercise bike (far less chance of being hit by a car on a stationary bike), but disapproving of the plan to let it hang out in a closet – it needs to be out where it’s ready to use at a moment’s notice, and preferably facing something you would want to watch while biking (a window? the TV?) because otherwise, if you’re anything like most people, the urge to use the bike will seldom arise if you aren’t forced to look at it fairly often. (Personal experience? Who, moi???)

Oh, good point. Does Skype have the ability to change your background, the way I hear zoom does? Failing that, maybe a tri-fold divider screen? Depending on how big the room is, maybe even a curtain with a ceiling-mounted curtain rod could work. Or just let everyone think you’re a bad-a$$ workout fanatic. 😉

Yes! We have had an exercise bike in our basement for almost 20 years, and I have used it a handful of times.

We moved it upstairs a month ago and now I’m using it every other day. It is right between a window with a decent view on one side, TV on the other side. Perfect.

I have the Dua brand Aoud Bleu Intense and Dua gets a lot of flack on some of the FB Canadian fragrance forums that I’m on, but honestly its quite a decent clone. A little more heavy on the cardamom and the oud smells a little bit more synthetic/medicinal but for $70 versus $450 or so for the original by Fragrance du Bois, I am BEYOND happy with the compromise. I recommend it because at least if you’re genuinely not happy with the clone it can be resold or gifted and you aren’t out a lot of money.

It’s a cold day here and things didn’t go as planned for Jake’s surgery. We drop him off at 7:30 am and as soon as week get home. The vet calls and says that his calcium levels are high and the surgery is a no go. We drive 45 minutes back to the vet to collect him. It was an aggravating morning. Wore Pleasures this morning because I wanted something undemanding. I am currently in Shalimar. The vet is running bloodwork to see what the deal is.

Lancôme Santal Kardamon yesterday and today because apparently Montréal decided it’s winter now – temps at 2-7°C.

This perfume with its cardamom+sandalwood+vanilla reminds me of the first time I had Turkish ice cream (dondurma) 12 years ago in Olympos, while on a brief vacation from working in Antalya.

There was an ice cream vendor in the woods leading up to Çirali Beach, serving dondurma in bowls of local melon. It was so unexpectedly chill and relaxing to take a break from hiking in the heat to eat ice cream while surrounded by trees. Happy memories!

I’ve been wearing cozy, comfort scents lately. Must be the cool weather!

On Monday I put on Frédéric Malle Iris hand creme, enough to cover my arms as well. I was going to add Hiris, but didn’t need it as the creme was potent enough. Yesterday I put on a few sprays of Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights. Today I put on a bit of Estee Lauder Youth Dew bath oil on my wrists.

Definitely been a good time for comfort scents lately for me as well. Rainy weather seems to call for them, especially in the fall. ☔??

I have Voile de Violette that makes me think of a fine white cotton shirt and Palm Beach. A man could do it too. Earlier I tried the SSS Yin and Ylang sample they sent. It starts out fantastic with citrus, ylang, and sandalwood. Dries down to that scratchy amber stuffs in some of their perfumes plus dirty socks I don’t like the smell of. Too bad, the first hour is great. Anyway, I smell rich and sophistication right now.

So very late to post today…too much work nonsense…trying a sample of Serendipitous and it’s quite nice.

Was looking up reviews on Fragrantica and they have updated the website. My brain is having a hard time handling this change.? Must…endure…

I noticed it too and thought I must have clicked on the wrong link. I had to close the browser as it did not fit within my iPhone window.

More modern but a lot busier in many ways. Agree that things seem blown up/larger in size than necessary probably…but I will adapt…I need all the vanilla perfume intel held within. 😉

Agreed! I’m not a fan (especially on my phone) but I really rely on it to guide my online purchases and samples.

Hi! Late getting to the computer today!

Bedtime last night I tried SL Ambre Sultan (sp?). That’s a really rich fragrance. Not exactly having a lemming for it like I have for some of the floral and fruity Serge Lutens fragrances, but I liked it fairly well. 🙂

Dad put our new birdfeeders up yesterday, and lots of birds had found them by this morning. That was a lively scene. 🙂

Late this afternoon, I tried HdP Amber 114. I also liked that one. 🙂 I’m finding the ambers pretty soothing, really. I’m doing okay, but I think I’m like a lot of other people in feeling some free-floating stress about life in general. Yes?

I needed to get blood tests done today, which kind of wrings me out. It was pretty typical for me — second phlebotomist coaxed a vein out of hiding for the fourth stick, and it didn’t infiltrate like the first three. Ugh. Kind of my fault for crying out in pain more than the first phlebotomist expected at her first stick. I did get other stuff done after I went home and broke my fast.

The latest cookbook I’ve been reading is on Vietnamese cooking. The author said that Whole Foods had a pretty good selection of some of the condiments she recommended and various kinds of rice noodles. Mom was with me on that venture, so I mentally noted that they had chili garlic sauce and other sauces in stock, but didn’t try to get any then. There were some boxes of rice noodles, but they were all brown rice. I’m not a brown rice fan. I’ll have to see in the next couple of weeks if Gong’s Market in the Frazer/Malvern area is open.

Yesterday I made it to my favorite Indian grocery and got naan, ghee, fresh laddu, and various other things to eat. 🙂 I tried to make some version of raita last night. I’ll get ground cumin before I experiment with that again. I’ve been busy trying to do various recipes in the last few weeks, though. 🙂

I used the coffee-vanilla scrub that Koyel made (thank you!) during my evening bath. Now my legs and arms feel soft and silky, and I smell yummy. 😀 That was a nice, relaxing end to the day. 🙂

I need a coffee-vanilla scrub in my life! I see recipes online mixing sugar, coconut oil and coffee – some with vanilla extract. Is yours a mic like that?

Koyel, who comments on NST fairly often, made it. I don’t know the recipe, but I’ve been enjoying the finished product. 🙂 Koyel makes homemade products for the skin, and a variety of herb and spice salts for flavoring food. I believe I asked her for some of those things during a swapmeet. If you attach your question about the recipe to a comment of hers on here, she’ll get your message.
