Monday scent of the day 10/26

Posted by Robin on 26 October 2020 206 Comments

It's Monday and Pumpkin Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm starting the week with one of the best antidepressants in my arsenal, Aftelier Candide.

Reminder: on 10/30, we're doing Emotionally scented...wear a perfume that gives you a strong emotional response (it makes you laugh, cry, feel sad, or becomes part of your armor to face the world, etc). Suggested by johanob, who gave the example of Guerlain L’Heure Bleue, which makes him feel sad.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Ciao a tutti (hello everyone)

Like lavender, the smell of sandalwood makes me feel very balanced, blissful, calm. SOTD Samsara
Though Samsara has a different meaning in say, Buddhist terms, the cycle of life and death, knowing this one can always remain humble with one foot on the ground and staying present in the moment. So it also has that emotional response for me.

I’m wearing Bond No. 9 Saks Fifth Avenue, from a freebiemeet decant. I have a bag of decants that I rarely wear, and I’m pulling from there this week. Saks Fifth Avenue is a BWF, not my favorite type of scent. I think it is the first Bond No. 9 scent that I have ever worn.

What a shame! I’m went to a rare estate sale last week that had a lot of perfume, a couple factices. There was a Baccarat bottle of Joy in a beautiful presentation box and some other Patou perfumes. I don’t know how much they were but they were lovely to look at. Lots of interest, probably from larger cities, I couldn’t get close to the table.

There’s a few bottles out there. Overstock, Beauty Encounter, and FragranceNet has newer stock. If you want vintage, there are several bottles on EvilBay, FYI.

That said, I might have pulled the trigger on a few items in my sleep walking adventures. ?

Woke up in Lyric this morning. I really hate it when my work schedule gets changed around. Go in earlier than normal and instead of having Saturday off, I have Friday off. I think with Jake having surgery on Wednesday, is making it worse. Have a little dab of Estee Lauder Pleasures on for this afternoon.

I’m in Amouage Gold again, and I smell fantastic!

I reread Angela’s review, which suggests that Gold might be best reserved for special occasions, but I can’t seem to stop dabbing it on. It’s cheering up this dreary day quite nicely.

It is best reserved for special occasions. You are lucky that you have the ability to wear it. The fecal not is too much for me but the men’s version is toned down and works better for me.

Happy Monday! My SOTD is vintage Opium edt. I found a vintage bottle of Patou’s Sublime for sale on flea-bay. I am very happy.

It’s cool and foggy out, I think I’ll walk to GG park’s soccer fields and walk the track. Now that the cooler weather is upon us, I am thinking about making a batch of pumpkin butter. 🙂

Pumpkin butter sounds amazing. My mom used to make tomato butter and can it every year. Might sound strange but it was delicious – spicy and sweet. An old Pennsylvania Dutch recipe passed down through her family. I need to take up that role now, I think.

Important question, is this a tomato compound butter? Or is it the tomato equivalent of apple butter, where it’s just tomatoes cooked to a butter-like consistency?

Well, of those two choices, Mom’s was essentially a fruit jam, the equivalent of apple butter, but hers was always much more chunky and not smooth the way most apple butter is. I remember coming home from school and smelling it cooking – it was delicious.

SoTD is No 19 EDP. I felt the need for a forcefield. Working with a difficult new client. Last month was a nightmare, and November could be yet another nightmare (client, no other inferences.) Amouage all week is a great idea if I can’t find my Aftelier samples.

    Cold & grey here too.

But I’ll start looking for some sunshine! Have a good day folks.

Chilly day here.. One of our chickens died unexpectedly overnight. She seemed fine yesterday evening, but adorable hubby found her cold and stiff in a corner of the chicken house. Sad – she was a pretty little thing.
SOTD started to be the last drops of Jacsques Fath Tempete d’Automne, but the sprayer has failed, and the drops are still in the sample glass. So, I rattled around and found Ormonde Jayne Tolu, and am happy with my choice. This comes in more or less reasonably priced 50 ml bottles – perhaps I will get one of these once my budget is back on track. On me, mainly incense, with various herbal overtones from time to time, which makes it different than the other incenses I wear, a Nag Champa and Somali Rose (Africa!) oil from a little shop in Grand Rapids call the Smell Good Cafe, La Liturgie des Heures, a true European churchy incense, and Tiger’s Nest, the Himalayan version of “churchy.” Tolu is a South American resin, so I have gone around the world with y incense choices here. All I need is a spray on version of a sage, and sweetgrass smudging stick to have most of the continents represented here….. hmm…

meridifay, not sure if this would appeal, but I find PoTL very incense-laden, with a marzipan and marshmallow overlay. Not quite churchy, not too goth or hippie chick. YMMV.

    SOTD = Aftelier Bergamoss EDP

It’s cold and rainy and will be so through Thursday. Tropical disturbance Zeta is making itself known. Bergamoss, green, earthy, spicy and just a bit feral is somewhat melancholy and felt perfect for today.

For the Splitmeet, I will respond to everyone later today. While I had a great time celebrating my nephew’s birthday, it threw off my weekend in that what I usually do on Saturdays got deferred to Sunday.

Lol on your experience with Bergamoss. It has that tinge of animalic and it really depends on how one handles animalics in combination with other notes.

I am all for virtual perfume armor. ♞

Thunked my sample of 4160 Tuesdays Rhubarb & Custard today. I really like it…debating if I need more but am trying to think more critically on FBs especially now that evilBay isn’t allowing used/preowned perfume sales right now.

I actually haven’t sold any perfume on eBay in a year or two but I have big plans. 😉 I did check out Mercari but they appear to not pay the seller until the buyer leaves feedback which is kind of strange if I am reading their policies right. Please weigh in on Mercari or other selling sites if you have intel. ?

      What????
If you don’t leave feedback in time on Mercari the seller doesn’t get their payment? I’ve purchased two perfumes from there and they give the buyer three days to leave feedback.

I thought I would sell there, too.

        https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/91

Above is the article and below is the summary I found elsewhere…apparently if the buyer doesn’t leave feedback it forces it in 3 days but that’s quite a wait from the sale, shipment/delivery time and then the buyer’s feedback window, etc.

“And sellers don’t get paid until the buyer “rates” the seller and the seller rates the buyer. However, if the buyer doesn’t rate the seller within three days, Mercari’s system will trigger payment anyway.”

I’m looking at Mercari because Poshmark doesn’t allow perfume selling. I think Mercari’s rules are kind of confusing, a friend of mine recommended watching a YouTube video that explains it but I haven’t watched it yet.

Hi … I know your comment is a month old, but I thought I’d weigh in on Mercari and selling perfumes.

I haven’t posted on NST in a long time, because I took a hobby hiatus for a few years, but I’m back in it! I started selling some of my early “perfume education blind buys” ☺️ on Mercari this month and it’s been quite fun and easy. I did a direct comparison to eBay (which has a much larger customer base but it has some cons).

Anyway, I’d be happy to share my thoughts. I always consider the NST group my OG perfume teachers and would love to give some knowledge back – assuming you haven’t already found it elsewhere. And no, you don’t have to look at my listings ?

Might be easier to communicate via another method than in this old post. I think my profile links to one of my email addresses, if you’re interested.

      Regardless, I do recommend it.

    Hello, NST folks! 🙂

Scent at bedtime on Sunday: SL Datura Noir. I think someone had worn that as a floriental last week? Anyway, I found my sample of it and belatedly gave the project a try. Of course then I developed a lemming for that fragrance. LOL

I think I’ll try a lily-of-the-valley fragrance today. Those generally cheer me up. We’re supposed to have a wet and rather cold week, as someone observed above.

Perfume rant ahead. There is a bottle of Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple, unused, in the original box listed for $250. Yes, you read that correctly. I apologize if it is anyone who posts here but the market will not support this price now or ever. I have an extra bottle I got at Marshall’s earlier this year for $20. You can get a vintage, sealed bottle of Patou Joy for less, a very expensive perfume to produce and some of the caps are real gold. As we have come to realize, Patou used the money they made from couture to fund the perfume line, which was literally profit less for all the years Jean Patou ran his company and held the original license. By no metric imaginable, other than personal taste, does Patou Joy equal Pacifica Mountain Temple. Using up some old Slumberhouse samples that have turned to syrup but still smell heavenly! These make me feel prudent for the CP….

Pacifica used to have some scents like that and Spanish Amber that were decent. Now???We live in an upside down world.

Thank you Aurora. This mystery sample is just a few drops of whatever it is, so it’s going to get thunked soon. And since I don’t know what it is, I can’t have a lemming for it. So that’s the positive side of things.

Jalapeno, I saw this and thought you could appreciate the laugh. It’s a parody of Black Sabbath War Pigs

Next month will come soon enough but sorry for the wait! I hope it resolves the shoulder woes.

As to the mystery sample, I would rather not smell it done go crazy trying to figure out what it is if I happen to love it.

Argh! The mystery sample is so frustrating. I have one now with pinkish juice. Irritates me no end. I don’t love it. Just want to know what it is.

I had an urgent desire to wear Safran Troublant today. I went looking in my perfume cabinet but the little lightbulb has burned out. I began pulling out bottles with that L’Artisan cap. Mure et Musc, Fou d’Absinthe, Mechant Loup, Premier Figueuier, Havana Vanille. No Safran Troublant in view. I’ve hidden the bottle from myself. So in desperation I sprayed on Passage d’Enfer. Just that kind of a day.

I hope you find your wayward Safran Troublant soon.

SotD Patou Ma Liberte. Not sure it will be a favorite as lavender does not suit me somehow, though I love to smell it. I did enjoy the spiciness and I have to admit I oversprayed per usual.

I thought to myself, what would Nomi Malone wear? I’m pretty sure she wore vanilla musk while she was dancing at the cheetah, being she was broke and it was 1995. So I have VM, and am watching Showgirls. I’ve always thought Elizabeth Berkeley was phenomenal in it, and that it is an absolutely great movie.

To a non-perfumer enthusiast this might be confusing but to us it makes perfect sense. 🙂
