Tuesday scent of the day 10/20

Posted by Robin on 20 October 2020 185 Comments

Happy Tuesday!  Also, International Sloth Day (that's the mammal, not the sin), International Chefs Day, World Osteoporosis Day and World Statistics Day.  Plus a bunch of birthdays: Arthur Rimbaud, Jelly Roll Morton, Bela Lugosi, Tom Petty, Viggo Mortensen. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Fendi Theorema, and drinking my second cup of Numi Breakfast Blend with nutmeg.

Reminder: on 10/23, wear a floriental, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: I *think* that is an apple teapot at the top, but the title at Amazon is "Mobile phone A P P L E Teapot, Dahongpao Teapot display (color : Big red pouch)" and the description is even more mysterious: "The sand is heavy and heavy, and it seems to be a peasant. It will be used for a long time, and it will gradually become a sharp change. It will be changed greatly and warm and solemn. The lines are beautiful and biological, the mouths are coordinated, and the barrels are matched with slender handles to make them more elegant." Buy at your own risk, $94.97 plus shipping.

Pretty teapot, weird description. I’m continuing the CP with Dior La Collection Couturier Parfumeur New Look 1947. This is from a mini purchased from a discounter. Pretty!

I liked that Dior series, and apparently New Look 1947 was my favorite, as I bought two of those nicely packaged minis.

      You smell great!

What I do now is I buy a latte, I pour 2 thirds of the latte into a jar and stick it in the fridge, drink 1/3 today, bit more tomorrow, etc.

So what I have figured out is I can have about 1/3 a shot of espresso, no problem. And it does hit the spot, even that little amount, if I’m feeling draggy.

And, luckily I like cold latte the next day! Also luckily I am too lazy to go get one very often, and am not much tempted by the regular coffee my husband makes.

My neighbor with Parkinson’s died early yesterday. It was a long day between new project and trying to help. Have stellar headache from not drinking enough water.
They are from Denmark and none of the family can be here due to travel restrictions. Very hard, and a little to close to losing my own parents.
But I’ll do my best. Something calming today, maybe some Satori Satori.

That is a very odd description of that teapot.

SOTD: Van Cleef’s latest, Bois d’Amande

Unfortunately, this one does not scratch the itch I was hoping it would. Very much a skin scent, good longevity but only you will smell it and, very little almond, sadly. It smells like sugar cubes and wood to me after 10 minutes 🙁 Money saved?

          Hi MossyBerry, 😀
I have vintage and the current versions of Knowing.
I’m a huge fan of patchouli florals, I have many in my collection, Aromatics Elixir (both Perfume and EDT – the EDT is less herbal and waayyy more patchouli), Knowing, Coriandre, Paloma Picasso, and Diorissimo are among my favorites.

Modern floral/patchouli/chypres have a redesigned floral/jasmine. Examples of this would be Narcisco for Her, Aromatics in White and White Patchouli – all modern floral/patchouli scents with the patchouli scrubbed clean, which while enjoyable, I prefer mine dirty/earthy.

*Taking note.* Thanks, ST! We do share some favorites. I will dig out my Aromatics in White for a sniff. After today’s wearing of Knowing, I think I smelled what you did; the new Knowing is just lighter and fresher – missing the leather. I will keep sniffing! JadinGA, feel free to chime in about your versions of Knowing. I like both.

Hello all, I’m in Fendi Theorema Espirit d’ Ete, and drinking my French press with egg nog foam & nutmeg. Spices and vanilla all around.
That Numi Breakfast Blend sounds delicious. Their Chai is also quite good.
I slept in this morning, apparently I needed rest. My tootsies are sore, it’s time for a new pair of sneakers, I found these on the interwebz – so bright and colorful. I purchased the below in rose/red. They will see me coming from a mile away! 😀
A friend and I took a lovely walk yesterday in Golden Gate Park, the cool and fog, was glorious.
I will do it again tomorrow.

Yes, that’s exactly how I do it. I found this handy little milk frother, it’s stellar. My husband was making fun of me wanting one, that’s until he became semi-addicted to how much nicer his morning chai tea was with this. Target makes a so-called Holiday milk, it’s milk lightly sweetened, with added cinnamon and vanilla. It’s decadent but delicious.

Imaginary Authors O, Unknown for me today.

Cute teapot but can’t imagine risking the purchase with a description like that. Sounds like Amazon these days — maximized for search but not intelligibility, relevance or quality. Caveat emptor. That said, “The sand is heavy and heavy, and it seems to be a peasant” makes me wonder what’s INSIDE that teapot when it turns up. 😀

Turns out I must not like florientals much, as I don’t seem to have but one or two (according to fragrantica). Today I’m in BV Eau Legere again, my recent rediscovery.

I’m quite shocked – haven’t gone through their list – at how proportionately few representations I have! I think these categories are, by necessity, largely arbitrary, but some seem especially strange. For example: Calligraphy is classed as an oriental floral, but Calligraphy Rose is not. And Jo Malone’s Jasmine Sambac & Maigold which is as buxom a floriental as I can imagine is classed as a floral!

Glad to know I’m not alone. I thought certainly that 24 Faubourg would fit the category, but no – the Eau Delicate version gets the designation instead. Well, okay, I suppose … but then I see Eau Claire des Merveilles listed as a floriental. Really? (Maybe if one classifies salt as an oriental spice …)

And La Mia Perla is called an oriental floral: um…if Musk were a flower and wood were oriental ? I also found it strange that Cuir Ottoman was listed.

I was certain I’d be covered with Shalimar but no – not my version (I have Eau de Shalimar and original edp…) Nor was Arpege listed ?

Cuir Ottoman an oriental floral rather than a leather, or even a floral leather?? Well, that tears it. I’m setting my own definition of floriental for the CP! 😀 (I know what Robin is thinking: “Whoever said you couldn’t?” 😉 )

          • MissGoldsmith says:

I was in Coco Mademoiselle this morning. Since I have showered, I am in Hedonist Iris today. I am still waiting on my dogs’ Barkbox. I reached out to them and they said that if I don’t get it by the 26th to reach out again. I am blaming the post office for this one. I seem to get the Barkbox later and later and it’s been almost 3 weeks since it’s shipped. First world problem, I know.

Robin, that teapot description really cheered me up. Thank you!

I am a wood pudding today in Winter Woods. Fiance’s comment this time is much better than the last time I wore it (about a year ago): today, he said, “You smell like perfume.” Last year, it was, “Please don’t wear that near me.”

Hiding away in the office with Grieg to comfort me while the Roomba and automated litter box both make riotous noise out in the hallway.

Obsession Sheer for me today. I’m still a bit grumpy. Broken blood vessel in eye (I look ready for Hallowe’en) and colonoscopy (just the regular screening) on Thursday. I already hate the diet. I just don’t eat that way (meat and white bread/pasta/rice – no veggies, fruits, nuts, beans, etc?? urgh). Not looking forward to the prep tomorrow. On Friday, I should be back all chipper and likely wearing Cinema.

I bought it Saturday at TJX and I am just going to drill down on whether it is worthy of the name of its 1990’s original. 😀 All the other bottles were glaring at me, but I stuck to the plan.

Here’s another entertaining Chinese teapot description from an Amazon listing:

[Introduction] This pot combines the regularity of the ribs into a whole, the rib pattern outlines the body, the flesh and blood is full, the lines are simple and smooth, elegant and generous, and the artistic effect is very good. The body of the kettle is composed of a ribbed pattern, and the ribs are uneven. The cover button is coordinated with the mouth and body, and the proportion of the whole pot is coordinated, and the spirit is full and the momentum is straight.
[Characteristics of mud] The sand is heavy and rustic, and it seems to be a peasant. It will be used for a long time, and it will gradually become more and more varied. It will be warm and solemn. The lines are beautiful and natural, the mouth is coordinated, and the barrel is matched with a slender pair to make it more elegant.

I’m pretty sure the original Chinese made sense, at least to connoisseurs. The real culprit here isn’t Amazon but most likely Google translate or similar software.

KyaraZen, a professor in Singapore whose incense wheel I’ve posted here before, collects these special tea pots. He mentioned once in an instagram post that he had hundreds of them!

I thought of google translate, too. But I like to read them and try to figure out how the words may in some sense relate to each other. If the spirit is full and the momentum is straight, maybe your tea won’t dribble down the spout!

Thanks for the link to the photos of teapots in that kind of style. I’m wondering if the picture Robin put up is of a pouch that looks like a teapot? But the description of that one says it has heavy, heavy sand…The translation is strange indeed.

There are a lot of differently shaped and painted Chinese tea pots on Amazon that designate “Color: big red pouch.” I don’t think all of them could be pouches that look that much like tea pots. They are also all red, I think, so more likely it’s a mistranslation of this particular red teapot color designation.

I’m not active on Instagram, but someone who is could message KyaraZen, include one of these listings, and ask him what’s going on.

He also sometimes comments on teapots to avoid or test for possible lead contamination. He might have useful words of caution.

Here’s another example of a listing:

That’s true – though I was thinking there would be internal consistency so that the rosey descendent of an oriental automatically got called a floral oriental ? Who and how these things get done though is anyone’s guess!

I think within the industry, the best bet is go with what Michael Edwards says…he works directly with the fragrance & flavor companies, and he works by smelling things. So if you just use his “ruling” you are consistent.

    Hello! 🙂

Numi’s Breakfast Blend is one of my favorites. 🙂 I have to drink it early in the morning or I’ll be excessively caffeinated later in the day. That’s one of their high-caffeine varieties. I really like the flavor of it, though.

Like Tea Thyme above, I also like their Toasted Rice green tea. 🙂
Their Jasmine Green is very good, too. I have boxes of jasmine green tea that I got from at least half a dozen places, including a couple of Asian grocery stores. I’m a big fan of jasmine-flavored tea, and of jasmine rice. There’s a theme here. (LOL)

Someone I worked with sent me a good-sized discovery set kind of box of Numi’s flowering teas about a decade ago, when I was home recovering from a badly broken ankle. I’d microwave a Pyrex measuring cup of water until the water boiled, and then steep the tea in the little glass teapot that came in the box with the various sorts of tea. I was entertained for several minutes at a time watching the tea “flowers” open.

I later realized that steeping some of those sorts of tea for a good while and drinking them in the afternoon put a high amount of caffeine in my system later in the day than I should have had caffeine, but at the time I appreciated the entertainment value.

In addition to (of course) the jasmine varieties of flowering teas, I also liked the amaranth globe and osmanthus flower teas. That was where I learned there was such a thing as osmanthus. 😀

I have a number of perfume samples that are florientals. Some kindly person sent me Comme des Garcons samples of a fragrance that’s named “Floriental.” That’s the kind of thing that makes a project very easy. (LOL!)

There are osmanthus varieties that bloom in more temperate climates. There is a beautiful one that is about 12 feet tall and at least that wide that resides at Norfolk Botanical Garden. It just blossomed and then all the beautiful white blossoms fell like snow, also a lovely sight and smell. I always take a little ziplock bag and capture a few and float them in my tea. I also find bags of dried osmanthus at my local Asian grocery store. I love all the flower teas.

That must have been lovely, yes. 🙂 I’ve seen containers of dried flowers in the same aisle as boxed tea and other drinks in Gong’s Market, which is in driving distance for me.

Sometime when life is more back to “normal,” there are a number of Southern coastal towns I’d like to see. 🙂 My wish list of botanic gardens I’d like to see includes the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and, much less likely to happen, the Huntington in California. 🙂

Don’t try to use that link if Opera is your web browser. The file is too big to be downloaded that way. Using Firefox is fine, though.

I’m back and have enjoyed posts and comments and people’s SOTDs. In a rather bad mood because I learned this afternoon of a bank fraud that involved postal theft. Spent awhile on the phone with a fraud guy at my bank and now tomorrow must report it to both the PO and Houston Police. Went online and found the same thing has happened to others. Apparently some guy or gang has been stealing from two mail drop boxes and I used one. Sadly, it was my fairly hefty check to Mom’s place which is how I found out, when they called me to say they hadn’t gotten it. It’s depressing to think there are such brazen criminals out there in the world. I’m confident I will get the money back but Phooey and a pox on all their houses.

Oh for the love of [insert your deity of choice]! It’s such a waste of time for you all around and the violation! A triple pox on them!

Deviated from the plan with Muschio Oro again today. Addicted to its subtle zingy nuances. But – I’m going to sleep in TBS White Musk Smoky Rose which Fragrantica lists as an oriental floral. ??‍♀️ I’m not crazy about this one for a whole day but I do love it for a couple of hours which makes it great to fall asleep in.

    Late today!

The weather started off gloomy and wet, but improved over the course of the day. The maple trees I mentioned yesterday have much more red today, and I think that peak color is very close now. That does mean those pretty leaves will be on the ground, and gone soon, though.

SOTD = Andy Tauer’s Incense Extreme, from the sample stash. I like the perfume a lot, but today it wasn’t quite right. Kind of like an itch you can’t scratch.

Weather improved enough for an after work walk for me. I am trying to time my exit from the parking lot to around 2-3 minutes after the parking lot lights turn on and they usually turn on within 3-4 minutes of the lights across the street. Today, the parking lot lights turned on way before the ones across the street but I did not want to chance it so left soon after.

Anyway, the scrawny tree with all red leaves is looking sadder everyday.

Wearing Esprit d’Oscar for the CP. Very warm in South Eastern Virginia today. Almost 80 tomorrow! I think I might have to pull the Songes out!

No CP points for me but I’m getting karma points: I traded away my bottle of Akro Dark today because, sadly, I could tell Mr. Teebear very much didn’t like it, but would never say anything.

Especially while we have to spend so much time in the apartment together due to the pandemic, it seemed unfair to have it in heavy rotation for the fall and winter and to just watch him suffer silently!

Got a bottle of Alien Musc Mystérieux instead and am trying it out tonight, and I do have to say, I quite like it! My cats also quite like musks so hopefully Mr. Teebear tolerates it better and all’s well that ends well.

Still reading everyone’s comments on here fairly regularly and loving it, just lacking energy to write myself very often.

I like that Alien flanker. A little goes a long way. Plus the bottle is gorgeous!
