Monday scent of the day 10/19

Posted by Robin on 19 October 2020 233 Comments

Indeed it is another Monday. PSA: the splitmeet is coming up this weekend. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm having an indecisive morning — too many choices — I will report my fragrance later in the day.

Reminder: on 10/23, wear a floriental, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Morning all! My SOTD is Laura Mercier’s Minuit Enchanté, thankfully it’s cooler in SF, all of us at the house are breathing a sigh of relief.
Enjoying a French press and a slice of my smoked salmon breakfast bake, recipe below. It’s light and flavorful.

It’s delicious and healthy. The hubby has the ability to eat all sorts of bacon and cholesterol-laden foods. With all of my digestive issues, I can’t eat like that. Breakfast is where we usually compromise so I won’t drown in grease!
If you don’t have Kefir, sour cream or Greek yogurt is a great substitute. And it makes the recipe. I’ve tried with and without Kefir, it’s better with, both texture-wise and taste.

I added extra mushrooms, dill, and asparagus. It was quite tasty.
If you can find it, Marin Cheese Company makes a goat’s milk and sheep’s milk feta that is really delicious.

I make a roasted feta drizzled olive oil with honey and roasted dates that’s an excellent appetizer and relatively lower fat than a traditional dip.

If the group listings on Fragrantica for “oriental floral” are the same as “floriental”, then I can do a whole week of the CP. First up is Calligraphy, which is a favorite of mine.

It’s coldish out and I’m in a smidgen of Il Profumo Ambre d’Or, which smells a whole lot like Maître Parfumier et Gantier Ambre Precieux, the first niche scent I ever owned, and which I sort of wish I still had a bottle of, even though I must have a half dozen serious ambers including Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan. I guess you never forget your first love.

ANYway. Ambre d’Or is everything you need in a cold-weather scent, warm and cosseting and kind of sweet but not sugary, cut with a few branches of herbs to keep the whole thing under control. There is a vague suggestion of flowers but it isn’t floriental, not by a long shot.

Lovers of Shalimar flankers rejoice! I shall be wearing my discontinued Shalimar L’Initial and the newly packaged and rebooted L’Initial with nary a mention of Shalimar anywhere. But today is a chore day so Adam Levine it is, also classified as a floriental, if you have an hour to peruse the gargantuan list at Fragrantica!

I’m revisiting a perfume from a +5 years old sample of Laboratorio Olfattivo Daimiris. I liked it back then and I still like it today. Its name tells you traightforward what to expect – a sueded iris. Powdery and creamy goodness. It slightly reminds me of Guerlain Iris Ganache but not as rich & chocolatey.

I’m in JHaG Musc Invisible. I got my sample last week and tried it and loved it, until….the drydown. At the end of the day I could smell that common note I find in many perfumes that is harsh on my skin. Giving it another try and seeing what today is like. It starts out a very pretty, soft floral/slightly sweet musk skin scent. No skank here (not that there’s anything wrong with that 🙂
Was too busy at work to post this weekend, so I missed the viewing poll. Will post today instead. A day late and a dollar short I guess.
    Movies:
A Beatiful Day in the Neighborhood- just watched this last week and it was really good. Different than I thought it would be. Fred Rogers was an amazing human and Tom Hanks played him perfectly.
Emma- the new version with Bill Nighy. I would watch him in anything. Fun movie
James Bond- just finished binge watching all the Daniel Craig movies and looking forward to streaming the new one when it comes out.
50 First Dates- rewatched this with our teenager who is finally old enough to start watching movies beyond PG. Yay!
Rushmore- also a rewatch with the teenager. Bill Murray. Wes Anderson. Need I say more?
She’s Having a Baby- rewatched this for the umpteenth time by myself. It is one of my favorite movies and definitely my favorite from John Hughes. So many good lines. Classic late 80’s with an excellent soundtrack (that I have on vinyl!). Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern are perfect.
    TV:
Masterpiece Van der Valk- a little “gritty” but very good.
Masterpiece Flesh and Blood-not as good as above but still good enough to watch. I am a Masterpiece junkie. If there is a support group, sign me up, lol.
PBS The Trouble with Maggie Cole- just started watching this last night. Seems like it will be a pretty good watch, but the scenery is pure eye candy! The village where it was shot is so picturesque it looks fake! I want to live there.
last but not least, and I’m almost ashamed to admit it, but we’ve been watching House on prime when we can’t find anything else to watch. Hugh Laurie’s character is really despicable at times (well, most times) but it’s like a car crash. We can’t look away.

There is some note in almost all JHaG scents that does not agree with me. I wish I could pin down what it is. I can’t find a common denominator. Whenever I have a suspect, I can find other things in my collection that I love, with the same note. I’m thinking it might have something to do with the amount used…

I think KellyC mentioned Sober October which I wasn’t aware of but I am doing Sober Oct 17th – Nov 2nd and Sober Nov 4th – 17th…reserving the right to a drink, if need be, on Election Day. ?

Sampling Captured By Candlelight by 4160 Tuesdays and Bee by Zoologist…which is I think the first time I’ve tried Zoologist…so behind the times…

Looking forward to the Splitmeet and wondering what people will be splitting please. Hajusuuri gave a tentative preview in yesterday’s thread for those interested too. 🙂

And yes, all bets are off on Tuesday the 3rd. 😉 I will admit struggling a bit at first but I’m doing much better now- although I did tell my hubs he couldn’t drink a margarita in front of me at the Mexican place the other night haha.

Also, how do you like Bee?

Well, I had every intention of wearing Eau Claire des Merveilles this morning for the cp, but the hand went for the Belle en Rykiel sample. It’s been hanging out on my dresser since the swapmeet. I like this, it’s different, but it’s not a love.

Tomorrow I’ll be driving about an hour to meet my daughter for a socially distanced outdoor lunch. She’s in Austin for a few days to see her fiancé, so I’m thrilled to get some time with her. I haven’t seen her since I went to California almost two years ago. It’s been way too long! ❤️❤️

SOTD = Teo Cabanel Barkhane, an incensey scent with oud, from a decant I keep in my desk for those days when I roll out of bed late and have to rush to get on the road to my office at the hospital. Oud was my rotation scent of the day, so I am right on track. 🙂 I obtained a full bottle of this, but my husband really didn’t respond to it, and it seemed to wear on me after a while, so I let it go. Once my decant is gone, I don’t think I will miss it much, there are other Morroccan style incense fragrances I like more…but it is serving it’s purpose today, since it is cold as the dickens in my office, and this is warming…

Barkhane was my favourite of the Teo Cabanel’s…though I didn’t love it enough to purchase. Is there a particular note which is too persistent? Or does it not somehow just not meld well as a background scent to whatever you are doing? Sometimes I love the scent of a fragrance but it just doesn’t work!

I don’t know what the chemical is. I had the same feeling, except more so, with Amber Aurea, remember that? It smelled fine to me initially but after a while I had the sensation of it just wearing on and on. Barkhane does that to me as well, some chemical just doesn’t change and after a few hours my nose just wants a break! So I wear it very occasionally, but there are many scents I like better, that don’t press on me.

Wearing YSL LIbre Intense. It’s a lot like Mon Guerlain but with a double dose of lavender and lasts 3 days.
I spent the weekend away, in a small place in the centre of the south island that is a heritage dark sky reserve and I had amazing views of Mars , orion etc. I actually stayed in the youth hostel. I think the last time I was in a youth hostel was in Salerno in the 80s, when I was a youth. The hostel is new and on the lakefront, so the best view in the village and the communal kitchen and lounge was incredible …not very many overseas visitors at the moment. Funny that people don’t seem to talk to each other in these places; they were all on phones, in their own worlds. I was given a private room ( cause I was old!) , with a TV so I coukd watch the exciting election resukts as they came in. It all seemed great and a million mikes away from the bunkbed/pillowcase version except that the heater was on a 10 minute timer and all through the night I got colder and colder…finally got up at 5am. Massive frost outside. But stars!!! Quiet!!! Beautiful.
Anyway, off to the graveyard. All the hawthorn is flowering, the big hedges and huge old trees..beautiful scent when you stand under the trees.still cold here.

Oh, I’m so envious, this all sounds wonderful! Especially the part about the election being over and so reasonably concluded. May the US have the same. But what a great experience to stay in a dark sky area. There’s a state park some hours south of here that is a “dark sky” area and maybe some day I can persuade my husband to go visit. His parents used to live in rural New Hampshire, and the stars at night were magnificent, especially in the winter.

Currently infatuated with SMN’s Muschio Oro. Like several others scents Iv swing around on, I hated it on first smell several years ago, but having become more intrigued with Musk over the years I found myself liking it on my last attempt. And…it was on sale so it had to come home with me.

Just in time for the current heat wave. Iv survived previous summers with citrus, green tea and Vetiver fragrances but can now add a ‘soapy’ Musk to my arsenal. Something I find strange is that some describe it as having animal notes, but others as being an aggressive soap-and-aldehyde scent. Perhaps it’s the way Khiel’s Musk reads as dirty to some and squeaky clean to others. Trying to wrap my head around the enigma!

This one is just a green tea/lime/sort of leather scent. It was 17 bucks on Fragrancenet for 2.5 oz. nothing exciting, but solid and easy to wear. It was supposed to be violet too, but I can’t smell it. So I had to get a small bottle of voile de Violette to scratch the itch. Oh well I was out.

‘Easy to wear’ is an underrated quality of a scent (I think). I have some beautiful fragrances but they don’t get wear time because they are too distracting, or just don’t work as general background and so they don’t get taken out often. Ultimately then, they are not all worth having. Green tea and lime sounds lovely and very usable. How is the VdV?

The VDV is a non sweet violet with Vetiver. Strong and long lasting. I would call unisex, but not on a cologny way like the Gaga stuffs. One thing about the GAga, if you put Elizabeth Arden green tea on top, it becomes the dominant scent and actually lasted overnight. I feel like a scientist right now.

I’ve been missing out on commenting this past week or so, but I’ve kept up on reading SOTD posts. So many good, nostalgic choices last week. And I look forward to some florientals this week, but today I’m in the chocolate patchouli goodness of Smell Bent Hungry Hungry Hippies. I’ve got about 1-2 wears left in the mini spray I’ve had for about 10 years. This is strong stuff so you don’t need much. Last week some of my CP perfumes that I didn’t get around to talking about were Boucheron Trouble, Datura Noir (the first SL I tried!), Une Fleur de Cassie, and Bois Farine (received in one of the first swaps I did on MUA in 2008).

Last month I mentioned here that I’d been nominated by a couple of my coworkers for an employee of the year award. Well, last Thursday I won the award! I admit to having a good feeling about it, but it was still shocking and emotional to me to win, especially when there were 13 other nominees. As is the same for many others, this year, especially the last 7 months, has been incredibly challenging to work through. My work didn’t slow down in the pandemic. In fact, I worked on a very time-consuming project that just ended (went live) the week before last. Anyway, I’ve been kind of riding the high of winning that award for the last few days, but now it’s Monday. And it feels just like every other Monday. ?

Congratulations, that’s amazing! And I’m sure well-deserved, with so many other nominees. Seriously, none of us get enough positive feedback in our work lives most of the time, so I’m delighted that you did. Maybe treat yourself to a special fragrance to celebrate! Just sayin’.

Hallelujah! I finally was able to talk to a live human being today re: my dreadful mail a few weeks ago. Looks like I have alot of paperwork to do, to hopefully resolve this issue. I hope by year’s end.
My 85 year old aunt stopped by today and told me an interesting story about her first job. Apparently she played records at the old downtown hotel. The records were piped into the elevator. I had no idea that’s where elevator music had originally come from!
Sotd is Keiko Merchari A Fleur de Peau. A good fall leather.

What a great first job. It’s lovely to have a relative who stops by. My aunt is far away across the channel, I lost two aunts in the last decade. I had the opportunity to acquire for cheap some Keiko Mecheri a while back, but what I had tested was not special enough so I passed, maybe I should have tried A Fleur de Peau.

I’m glad you finally got to talk to a person! And that the end of the dreadful mail issue may be in sight.

I also had no clue about how the music got into elevators in the old days. Sounds like a fun first job to have had.

Today I’m wearing 4160 Tuesdays Rhubarb & Custard. I am the volunteer photographer for my son’s football team and the senior moms took up a collection, conspired with my husband and bought me three bottles from my perfume wishlist. The centerpiece is the big bottle of Ormonde Jayne Woman- I have almost used up my travel spray so very excited about that. The other two are the small bottles of Rhubarb & Custard (I was obsessed with rhubarb as a child) and Nicolaï Angelys Pear. I’m kind of stunned by their generosity, and also my husband who steered them away from a gift card and into perfume. Since I have been on a no-buy all year – total bonus. Not that I needed a drop more perfume but….. happy Monday, everyone!

Oh wow, how lovely!! My football-playing son graduated in May and I miss the other moms. His best friend’s mother was the team mother and did SO MUCH for the kids. My role was to bake the “lucky” Bundt cakes for the weekly team dinners. I even found a Bundt pan shaped like a football stadium, lol. Some of us moms of last year’s seniors got together a few weeks ago for dinner outside and it was so great to see them. I’m just so happy that your hard work and devotion were recognized in such a beautiful and special way. Good job, hubby!

I’m inspired by this week’s project because I think this is perhaps my favorite perfume category. I could do it all week! Starting out today with some of my prized Boucheron Initial, the edp. It’s very old but still smells fantastic. A unique spicy combination of honey, jasmine, and rose, plus it says red currant leaf and wildflowers…. I don’t know how those components would smell on their own but the blending is superb and smooth. I wish I had more, but just have a little tiny bottle with that lovely teardrop shape and pearlized coating on it. Now my life would be perfectly fine if only the guy with the leaf-blower across the street would STOP already! It’s been going on for over four hours! I’m ready to strangle someone.

The notes description sounds great. As to the 4 hour leaf blower guy, does he have a giant yard, doesn’t know how to use a leaf blower and/or deliberately out to annoy the neighbors?

No scent this morning because I had a doctor’s appointment but now I’m home and wearing Roberto Cavalli Oro. This was a “get to know you” appointment because my previous doctor quit to work in public health. Good for her! Bad sleep last night but I’m trying not to take a nap so I can get a good night’s rest tonight. I’m having a bok choy and mushroom stir fry for dinner with a brownie for dessert.

Beautiful photo today Robin! The maple trees in my neighborhood have been slowly turning a magnificent red this year. I’d say that they are at around 30 or 40 percent right now. ??

Ugh Monday. Everyone here overslept, even the cats.

SOTD = ELdO’s Fat Electrician, from a sample I finally thunked today! Now maybe my little bottle will get some use. ?

      Thunkanator jalapeno! ?

The trees here are just turning so maybe 15-20%. That said, I’ve seen one tree that was planted with ifs leaves already red. It’s scrawny and is not looking particularly good as it will be denuded soon.

Well! That was interesting. I just read through the Fragrantica floriental list and have made so many discoveries:

    1. I have hardly anything in this category. Just 8 FBs.
    2. I consider 8 FBs “hardly anything”. ?
    3. Fascinating: some extensive lines appear to be entirely based on this category! Others have one or none.
    4. SIP has a perfume called “The Rose With The Broken Neck”. So dark!
    5. There is a Star Wars perfume. Should I really be surprised, though? And yet, I am.
    6. There is a Smurfs perfume.
    7. Good golly, why isn’t there a Sheera perfume?

Very late to read and post. Started the day in Dryad. (Conclusion: lovely, but feels redundant with all the other greenies I’ve got. My pocketbook is happy.) Will throw on a floriental before bed, though.
