Wednesday scent of the day 10/14

Posted by Robin on 14 October 2020 178 Comments

Hump Day, World Standards Day and National Dessert Day (oops, I celebrated that last night). We have a whole bunch of birthdays: Katherine Mansfield, E. E. Cummings, Hannah Arendt, Roger Moore, Ralph Lauren, Usher. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the first Frédéric Malle fragrance I ever smelled (I think — at any rate, it's the first one I took notes on, and my notes say "magical"), En Passant.

Reminder: on 10/16 we're going back to the beginning...revisit a fragrance you tried in your early days as a perfumista. Suggested by springpansy.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

having toast with a hazelnut chocolate spread, dessert for breakfast.

Ran out of the apartment to get the kids to their bus, sprayed Shalimar somewhere on my body..it was so fast..

Dressed today like a NYer, all black.

I am using a sample of Clarins water lip stain in Red Water, it doesn’t kiss off my mask. So far so good

Speaking of hazelnut chocolate spread, I’m so happy to see that there are still 3 Le Pain Quotidien’s open in NYC. One of my favorite casual restaurants and where I first fell for hazelnut spread.

I ordered from a company called Fastachi, but I have never tried anything from them before. They do have a nice selection of nut butters, so I got pistachio and mixed nut.

    Hi all!

In one of my all-time favorites, Dzongkha. Stony iris incense all day.

I bought something scented and had to share! I’ve been buying more and more yarn and this one really spoke to me. It’s made with 20% hinoki do it has a light woody smell. Kind of pricy but I’ve never heard of anything like it.

      You smell fantastic.

Yay a fellow knitter. I have made a couple of things from habu textiles yarn including a cowl from a linen lambs wool blend (it doesn’t look like it is available at the moment) and a bag out of a linen cotton paper (https://www.habutextiles.com/products/a-188?variant=19886058373190). I can’t wait to hear about your experience with the hinoki yarn!

I’ll definitely post when I work with it. I’m about 45% through a merino/mohair sweater at the moment.

I really do love how Habu has so many non-wool options. It is way too hot for more than one or two wool sweaters.

Inspired by the Black Narcissus, in many dabs of Vetiver essential oil, a gorgeous double distilled Haitian vetiver from Eden Botanicals that is very clear and clean, almost like it was made to be worn just as it is. I purchased a small sample vial for $3.00 so if you have been wanting to try some really good quality essential oils this is the way to do it.

P.S. ordered some Hawaiian vetiver yesterday so I can compare all the vetivers. Apparently, vetiver grass has been planted in Hawaii to help with erosion and because it is a lovely grass. Just Google Hawaiian vetiver and the company will come up in the results.

Many moons ago I had samples from somewhere (could be Eden, or not) of two or three kinds of vetiver. Great fun, and yes, they were all perfectly wearable by themselves, mixed with lotion or a carrier oil.

Woke up in Coco Mademoiselle and blogged about Honour woman extrait. I am debating on either LADDM or Les Annees 25 BIS today. Now I can say fall has really started. Started a new candle yesterday. Went with Apple Weather. Every candle I use makes more space. The next one will be either Lilac Blossom or Fresh Balsam. Talked to my supervisor yesterday and she didn’t quite understand why my breaks are a problem now after almost 7 months in. The product and customers take precedence over taking my break when they think I should.

Anyone here have Ava Luxe fragrances? I’m still going back in time just a bit to my MUA days and wearing her Madeline, which is a fun holidayish gourmand with spices, brandy, fig, vanilla, amber. I bought it back in the day but never wore it much. It’s just not suited to every day, but I still love it.

Hiram Green Vivacious. Because I just got this little decant (thank you, Oakland Fresca!!) and it’s one of the few violets I can stand on myself. Probably overall more spring than autumn for me, and a quiet fragrance – but lovely!!

SOTD is Costes. Not for the CP – it was a relatively late arrival to my collection – just because I love it. Goes with the camel-colored sweater I’m wearing today after freezing most of yesterday morning. Okay, not literally – we keep the thermostat at 70 most days and rely on sunshine through the windows for more warmth, and apparently my aging bones are not yet acclimated to the cooler weather we’re having lately.

I’m on hold, waiting to talk to people I dread talking to. Figured I would post my sotd. I’m wearing Shalimar eau de cologne. I layered it with Korres Lemon and Basil body cream, to bring out the lemon.
It’s the last day in the 60’s here. Cold and rain expected tomorrow into next week.

I think that the body products are great. I only have one perfume, and honestly it feels/smells more like a body spray to me. I really recommend the jasmine body cream, it’s pretty awesome.

I agree with lillyjo on the Korres jasmine body butter. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find it anywhere right now. Their Guava one is a good companion to Samsara.

Another yes for Korres. I’m using their Fig body butter today which is great… fresh and not too sweet. The Guava is also nice. I got into the line about a year ago when I started using their Black Pine skin care. The Pure Greek Olive line of shower gels is excellent and most have a body butter to match. The only products I do not like are in the Olive line… the Crepe Rescue Body Balm bar and Intensive Body Treatment. These two products are heavily perfumed with a LVEB-like scent which I cannot bear. No affiliation with the brand… I just like the unusual and natural scents they offer and the quality of their products that I have tried so far is excellent.

This is only from a sample, both on skin and blottar (or mouillette if you’re fancy), but it’s something new.
Or to be frank I was just looking for the nearest counter where I could ask directions to the liquour store hidden so cleverly in the deepest depths of one of Stockholms largest departement stores, while at the same time having a more commercially viable reason to bother a paid sales clerk it’s precious time..

    I settled for Byredo.
I thought I heard some influencer talk about a new release from them, but when I asked they pointed to a bottle containing a deep, reddish potion I wasn’t familiar with – Tobacco Mandarin.

The mandarin note was delightful, but so fieeting it didn’t deserve to be mentioned in the name.

Maybe creating a true mandarin note is such a feat even thirty seconds of it’s appearence is cause to celebrate?

Whatever the case, what’s left is predominantly leather.

Or so my I’m-so-well-versed-in-perfumery, recession narcissist self was thinking, going from “aah, suederal!” to “but there’s a hint of saffron…Safraleine!” before I checked the official nores online.

And alongside the notes I can’t detect there was the one that was obviously too smart for me – labdanum!

If you don’t know that smell, wear this fragrance on your skin, and after fifteen minutes smell again while thinking “Plasticine”.

    That’s labdanum.

Body shop Satsuma Body Mist is a cheap but pretty nice mandarin scent. For me labdanum is more plump leather than anything else.

O Robin, a perfume that smells ‘magical’! To me, that would mean an immediate search for the best discount and orderrrrrr!

SOTD is HdP 1804 because it arrived yesterday. Some of you wore it in summer and then I “needed” a third pineapple perfume ???

I think part of why I found it magical was that I did not think I would ever love a lilac perfume because it would be too futzy for me — this was back in 2003, before I realized there actually weren’t enough lilac perfumes 🙂

Baiser de Russie as I headed out to lunch with a friend. That time of year where it feels chilly in the morning hours then warms up nicely.

I stopped in our local Bed Bath Beyond, which is closing, since everything is on sale. Sad to see it close. Nothing of interest, other than the Revlon long-wearing liquid lipstick I discovered after COVID was 40% off. No mask transfer. It feels a bit sticky on lips, but that is solved by a quick swipe of a lip balm. My makeup choices have been permanently affected. I now only use CC cream to blur things a bit, no mascara, no blush. Just eyebrows and a tiny bit of eyeliner if I feel special.

And, I bought a very cute quilted nylon backpack at Target. It’s perfect for my travels.

I need some positive vibes right now haha. So this AM when I was leaving for work, I couldn’t find my ring set in either of the two little trays I always put them. I came home a little upset yesterday from some son drama and I have no idea where I set them but I know they’re home somewhere! I was in a hurry so just left without wearing them but I feel super weird and am obsessed with finding them as soon as I get home. Please send super strong vibes that they’re just on a counter somewhere that I see ASAP. Ugh.

I have badly injured.a toe recently TWICE–two different toes. It’s awful. The first one (big toe) is still not completely healed after a month. The latest one (second from end) may be broken but I’ve learned they do nothing for that. They said just tape it, and regularly ice it and elevate it, and take ibuprofen. So that’s what I’m doing. But between my right foot bad toes and left side bad hip, my walking is pretty pathetic. This morning I went in to have an MRI on my left hip. I’m very claustrophobic and so I got sedatives ahead of time and made it through, although I really hate that experience. The sounds are just too unworldly and freaky. I wore Chameleon because it’s light and bright. Now it’s late afternoon but I need to go back to sleep because that Valium is still making me muddled.

No moldy wet basement for me with VdR. I get a medium-weight patch. There might be the barest hint of rose petals in the far drydown.
