Thursday scent of the day 10/8

Posted by Robin on 8 October 2020 219 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy World Octopus Day (and it's also World Space Week). RIP Johnny Nash. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate for John Lennon Imagine.

Reminder: on 10/9 we're doing Beatlemania...celebrate John Lennon's birthday by naming your favorite Beatles or John Lennon song, and wear the perfume to match.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Imagine John Lennon's Final Breath Was Taken Around Here [cropped] by travelmag.com at flickr; some rights reserved. (You can read more about Central Park's Strawberry Fields here.)

Grab a hankie: David Bowie sings Imagine on the 3rd anniversary of John Lennon's death.

And the UNICEF: World Version.

And no religion too, Robin? 😉

I am in Robert Piguet Fracas for Beatles A Day in the Life. Especially for the parts with the orchestral build up and a loud piano chord at the end of the song.
    Audio only:
    https://youtu.be/YSGHER4BWME?t=240
Music video (may make you dizzy(, Miss Lizzy ? ):
    https://youtu.be/usNsCeOV4GM?t=240
Form Fracas description on RB website: “Here, legendary perfumer, Germaine Cellier, sought to create a scent that would make its wearer feel like a bombshell; one that would leave an unsettling effect on everyone that encountered it.” I find this song unsettling although in a good way.

By the way, for those of you who love Dzing! I have an idea – Being for the benefit of Mr Kite! Both the perfume and the song are circus-themed. Just check the lyrics and music.

Ha, yes — I suppose then that if you put the lyrics in the comments, it would be outside the comment policy and I would have to delete your comment. That’s sorta funny. But it keeps the peace, and all we are saying is give peace a chance 🙂

Oops, sorry, I forgot about that part of the policy. I just found ironic that a scent dedicated to a religion was matched to… let’s call it an anti-establishment song to avoid any breach of rules. But I get the peace connection.

Ok, I totally misunderstood your original comment!

But also, did not know Ouarzazate was at all inspired by or dedicated to any religion…Avignon obviously is linked to a religion, and so is Kyoto, but Ouarzazate is just named for a town on the frankincense route, where incense was part of daily life? You may know something I don’t!

But also, I just picked Ouarzazate for the smell…I didn’t think it through so much 🙂

All scents from CdG Incense series were made with a certain religion in mind.
“…Series 3 Incense collection, which was launched in 2002 and was devoted to the five main spiritual teachings of the humanity: Avignon – Catholicism, Ouarzazate – Islam, Zagorsk – Orthodox Christianity, Jaisalmer – Hinduism, Kyoto – Buddhism and Shintoism. Each scent is named for a city important to these teachings…”

Ouarzazate was my first niche perfume and I always think it has an intense visionary quality- so perhaps we could use that to get out the impasse!

          • Robin says:
            9 October 2020 at 12:43 pm

Merlin, no worries, there is no impasse…agree about the visionary quality and anyway it’s my perfume now, not CdG’s 😉

    Iris Torréfié

Has anyone been eating more these days? Maybe its the change of season. Two pieces of toast, 2 eggs and a bowl of granola with figs and yogurt.

I need some hand holding today. My oldest’s (who will be 6 in Dec) school is finally open and she went across town to the west side. I am so anxious about being across town from her. I know its ridiculous. When I think back to my childhood our bus ride to kindergarten was at least 20 minutes, I think it was about 15 min by car so by bus it had to be longer with all the stops and in and out of neighborhoods. Anyways, my youngest will join her at some point.

I have been finding it harder not to overeat, yes…I think that happens every fall, but it’s worse this year with the stress.

And may she be safe and happy and come home and tell you all about her adventures…was she excited to go back to school?

LisaD, I’m doing that too, although what I’m spending money on has completely changed this year.

Also true that since we are eating out almost never, and not spending money on other types of entertainment (concerts, bars, movies, etc) plus will have no vacations for a good 12 months by the time this is over, we are still coming out ahead. Maybe.

I was a wreck before my son’s preschool reopened (he’s four), but he has been soooo happy since going back.

When I asked him if he wants to stay home with me next summer when school is out, he said he’d have to think about it. Maybe your daughter will feel the same!

And I don’t know if I’m eating more, but I have been used eating whatever’s easy, which hasn’t made me feel too great.

I’m always at these stores with at least on impatient family member in tow, and due to Covid, you cannot actually enter the store yourself, so they spray samples on paper and hand the strips to you, then you step out on the sidewalk, take off your mask, and sniff.

A couple of sprays of Zoologist Squid for Octopus’s Garden (and world Octopus Day). I tried this once before and it left me meh, but I like it better a second time. It is a salty seaweed-y smell with incense. There is a little rose or maybe geranium. this is not really a tropical beach smell. Nice.

High eight! I have an older cousin who got bitten by an octopus when he was a teen and my 7 year old self thought that was the coolest thing ever. That was how I learned about their beaks and I was always fascinated after that.

I recently tried 4160 Tuesdays Rhubarb & Custard and really like it and was debating if I need more. Thunked a sample of Magi du Desert today. It’s great, but like others that are similar more. I can admit that I do keep sniffing myself though.

Yesterday I tried Cabochard for the first time from the freebiemeet. I was worried at first it would smell a little “old lady” for my work- not that I think that but maybe others would. Goodness it really hung in there all day and I could even still smell it on my arm last night. I enjoyed it a lot. I tried the vintage version and will compare it to the current (which I also received a sample of) soon.

One of my parent’s close friends and our neighbor growing up died of COVID-19 on Tuesday night. Super sad yesterday. It’s hard to hear my parents so down and sad, and it obviously upset me as well. Stay safe, friends.

I’m comparing Bucoliques de Provence and VCA Bois d’Iris this morning. They are both lovely, not the same, but perhaps close enough to not need bottles of both. I also spried on Iris Rebelle and I think that one is so assertive it’s drowning out the other two a little.
Headache this morning after one small glass of wine with dinner. We are members in several wine clubs (live very close to wine region), and just before the pandemic, I was going to cancel all of them – but now I feel I must support them through this. Why can’t we be members of breweries instead?! 🙂

Sotd is TF Fleur de Chine. I’m matching it to Michelle (my belle) because they both sound french, but aren’t. Lol.

SOTD = Gucci The Voice of the Snake

Bottle porn for sure but black is so hard to photograph. Patchouli-soaked leather Band-Aid ?.

The Making Scents of Studio 54 was a fabulous smellinar. Jessica kept the session very interesting and relevant and provided a good mix of history, fashion, perfume marketing, perfume smells and show & tell. I bet if I turned down the lights and turned on the strobe version of Flashlight, I could be participating from Studio 54!

A sample of that was given to me by someone (blushing if it was you!) and I liked it a lot. The price not so much.

No blushing needed because it wasn’t me as I literally opened my bottle last night ?

Love that bottle! Does it feel nice too? As in is it weighty?

I’m still smelling traces of it. When I was out for my walk 8 hours after initial sprays, it actually became more prominent probably because it was cool outside.

I’m not a big Beatles fan, they’re too often a bright and perky. However, I do like some of the slower songs like Eleanor Rigby. It’s melancholy, so I’m inspired to wear Après L’Ondée.

My favorite Beatles album is the White Album and Julia is one of my favorite songs on it. This song pairs beautifully with the entire sample of DS&Durga Rose Atlantic I sprayed on myself and it is a a thunk and a no. I am getting a lot of hairspray and not rose or Atlantic. The hunt for the perfect aquatic rose persists.

Barely keeping myself going here amid the rising panic of the impending move. 5 more days. I’m wearing Atelier des Ors and hiding in my bedroom trying to pretend nothing is happening.

    SotD = Le Lion

. . . from a decant I’m so very grateful to have! and I feel the need to roar a little bit.

Thank you to Robin for the Imagine links, so perfect for my mood today.

I’m going to wear Avignon later, I think it will be a pretty good fit for a chill music exploration session this evening.

Really looking forward to tomorrow’s CP. Music and scent and memory are a powerful combination for me, I’m interested to read what everyone chooses.

Hope everyone has a Thursday that holds something to be thankful for. 🙂

Portrait of a Lady for me today. I went for it after Eau Capitale yesterday because they have been compared so much and I wanted to sniff the similarities for myself. I can see a vague resemblance (patchouli, rose) but I find them quite distinct with the incense / smokiness being really prominent in portrait to my nose.

Anyhow… all week the Beatles song in my head has been Strawberry fields (living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see).

Am closing off the day in ‚like this‘.

Generously applied Bal d’Afrique hair scent to my hair this AM for my 7 AM Zoom meeting. Am totally wiped. Found out late on Monday I had to give a brief presentation at 6 AM on Tuesday that took me until near midnight to prepare–Have not recovered and the early meeting this AM did not help. I am too old for this schedule!

Got nothing for the CP today, but enjoyed those who commented about it!

Two more songs from Van Halen today. Because.
    https://youtu.be/OOjm4I7LRgY
    https://youtu.be/rMV-fenGP1g

I admit that I made a few snarky comments about “Van Hagar” back in the day. However, that version of the band made some pretty good songs, too. Just different from the David Lee Roth-fronted version of Van Halen.

SOTD = Jean Patou 1000 EdT, from a new bottle. This version doesn’t have the oakmoss that the original did, but it is a pretty, ladylike floral. I’d call it a good office scent. A couple of NSTers get enablers pins for this one.
