The damage so far: third quarter 2020 buying poll

Posted by Robin on 1 October 2020 196 Comments

Donatella Versace and her perfume cabinets

And October rolls around again, as it usually does. Donatella, Our Lady of Fragranced Forgiveness,1 having completed her beaching and kayaking holiday, and taking some time to think about sustainability, has a free moment to attend to her flock. She is wondering just how many bottles you might have acquired in the 3rd quarter (July, August and September) of 2020. She forgives all, so long as you confess.

[crowdsignal poll=10618115]

My purchases...

After spending nada for the first half of the year, I spent $57 on the Green Spell Indiegogo, and then Jessica made me spend $35 on Maya Njie Vanilj. That brings my total so far for 2020 to $92.

As always, report your purchases in the comments if you dare! And as always, we don't include samples or gifts, and you can count miniatures, decants and bottle-splits howsoever you like (I usually count them as half bottles). Samples don't generally count at all, even though some of us spend considerable sums obtaining them.

1. Why does Donatella host (against her will, mind you) the damage polls? There is no real reason other than the picture of her perfume collection, which shows that she indulges regularly at the perfume counter. The image, by the way, is originally from Allure magazine and appears here courtesy of Blogdorf Goodman.

I didn’t buy anything – three months into a yearlong no-buy have gone well!

Congrats! I am doing a yearlong no buy as well this coming year, which I will endeavor to make permanent as I have far too much perfume already.

Ever since my seven-month no-buy, which ended 1.5 years ago, I have been on a permanent low-buy, and really haven’t minded it much!

It was a helpful reminder. I still have a few fragrances that I really would like to own a full bottle of, but to be honest I’m never even going to use up half of what I already own.

I got Omnia Crystalline in .85 for 17.00. Mistake ordered 2, so the second one we call free. Got Fuji green tea for 12.00, then got another half price so it is free. Then Elizabeth Arden green tea deodorant for 5.00, mistake ordered 2 again so the second is free. Some small bottles coming about 40 for them.

Please help. I need something that smells like tea, incense, and Iris but not niche. Poor man special only.

I’m stumped as to a fragrance with all three notes. A few that immediately come to mind with iris and incense are Midnight Couture Black Eau de Minuit by Lolita Lempicka, Dzongkha, and Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Silver Factory but those definitely are not poor man special.

So I went off the rails a bit this quarter:

    SL Fils de Joie
    Dior Rouge Trafalgar
    Guerlain Iris Torrefie
Maria Candida Gentile Sideris, Exultat, Noir Tropical and Lankaran Forest

I also scored a 30ml extrait de parfum tester of Guerlain Bois d’Armenie. I never knew an extrait version existed, so I’m intrigued to smell it when I get back to my house in San Diego. It was effectively a gift with purchase, as Bois d’Armenie is discontinued, so the SA threw it in since she knew I loved BdA.

It’s a dry iris and coffee scent. Also a bit of tea and leather. It says it has vanilla but it is not at all sweet.

Abbondanza! What would life be without it?? I am certain Donatella would agree!

I was a busy busy perfumista this quarter, it seems.

July was interesting, with an overseas order that went wrong, but I Persisted and reaped the rewards:
    – Ormonde Jayne White Gold
    – Teo Cabanel Lace Garden
    – Armani Prive The Yulong
    – Jo Malone Yuja
    – Jo Malone Osmanthus Blossom
    – Guerlain Royal Extract II
    – MMM Coffee Break (just a mini tho)
    – Parfums de Nicolai Eau de Yuzu

August was, well, even more interesting as I was evacuated from home for 10 days due to wildfire, and retired from a 35 year career in the middle of that, so, apologies to D, my mind was not on perfume. I did manage one Aedes binge at the beginning of the month before everything went sideways:
    – Aedes de Venustas Pelargonium
    – Aedes de Venustas Cierge de Lune
    – Mini’s of Aedes de Venustas Palissandre d’Or, Copal Azur, Oiellet Bengale (ahem, this list will look familiar at the next splitmeet…)

September! Back on form! (There would be more but for a Saks order that went wrong… is the universe trying to tell me something about my perfume ordering? If so, la la la la la, I am not listening)
    – Chanel Le Lion
    – Guerlain AA Coconut Fizz
    – Guerlain AA Granada Salvia
    – SP Parfums Lemon Sorbet & Orange
    – Le Labo Cuir 28 (mini)
    – Atelier Cologne Clementine California (that limited edition bottle!)
    – Guerlain AA Orange Soleia

I got rid of a few FBs… and surely the Teo Cabanel doesn’t count since I bought that because my husband likes it on me (more than I do)… and, well, now that I am retired, I am on strike from spreadsheets etc so if I need more than my fingers to count it up, I shall just wave said fingers around and declare the count to be “10”.

    Again a very spendthrift quarter.
Three more SL unboxed testers, original packaging
    1. Serge Noire
    2. A la Nuit
    3. Vitriol d’Oeillet
    4. Datura Noir: new black packaging, boxy letters bought from a discounter
    5. Chanel No 5 body oil – my first ever Chanel
    6. Shalimar EDP
    Damage for this quarter: $345

Eau de cologne, actual cologne, never counts because it’s medicine.

I mean, it used to be! It was herbs and citrus peels and things macerated in beverage alcohol which you’d drink as a tonic and to ward off the plague. Ergo EdC is medication and doesn’t count any more than a bottle of ibuprofen does.

Can’t help you with the Carthusia.

Medicinal – yes! I guess another reason the Chanel might not count is that it lasts under half an hour on me – the decant I had previously lasted a bit longer, but maybe it had become more concentrated through vapor loss? Anyway, thanks for the valiant effort. 😀

I can never decide whether Donatella forgives us buying things or forgives us for no buys – personally, I think she prefers that we buy and collect. And so I have humored her.

    SL 5 o’clock Au Gingembre $70
and my big COVID panic-related purchase:
Chanel No. 5 L’eau in the gorgeous white twist and spray bottle (with 2 refills) for $121 (including tax)

This is over half my yearly budget goal…let’s see how well I handle the 4th quarter. About the No. 5 L’eau: I love the fragrance (and it lasts all day on me, although I hear not for others) and I LOVE the little twist bottle. I don’t splurge like that very often and I am basking in the sunshine of Donatella’s full approval.

I also love those twist bottles and was lucky to find a set on ebay of eau premiere a while back. It was a good deal but became a slightly less good deal when I discovered that one of the refill bottles was empty (even though this was in cellophane)….

I bought many samples from Dame, Solstice Scents (also some whipped soaps), Indiescents (some 4160 Tuesdays samples), Krystal Fragrances (more 4160 Tuesdays and BDK samples), Gallagher Fragrance samples, decants of the new Guerlain Iris and BDK Rouge Smoking and, last but not least, a full bottle of Pacifica Island Vanilla which I paid less $15 for. But the total damage is just over $300 for the quarter…it all adds up. A bit like when you leave Target and can’t fathom how it came to over $100.

Did anyone else watch the how-to-say-Versace video? It went so fast that I couldn’t pick up how Donatella actually pronounced it but apparently most if not all of us have apparently been getting it wrong as ver-SAWTCH-ay. Can anyone tell me what is correct?

I think Donatella’s point is that the “e” at the end is pronounced as “e” in “pen”, not as “e” in “see”.
Here is the same video but with some explaining –

An SA at Macy’s corrected my pronunciation once: it’s “Gerrrrr-lane”, dontcha know! AND she corrected my inquiry about a new perfume… she informed me that Gerrr-lane only makes one perfume: Shalimar.

I’m having a hard time figuring this out – the pandemic has removed so many seasonal markers that I don’t have a good memory what happened in which month, but I’ll try:
    1. Le Lion decant from Hajusuuri’s split.
    2. Bruno Fazzolari triple sampler organized by Hajusuuri.
    3. vintage bottle of Shalimar edc, rebottled, ebay.
    4. vintage bottle of Shalimar pdt, ebay.
    5. Shalimar Cologne and Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat via Fragrancenet.
    6. For the husband: Cologne du Parfumeur (fragrancenet), vintage Obsession (ebay), trio of terre d’hermes minis (ebay).

this comes to roughly $200 or a bit under, I think. But I probably forgot something! Seeing that I have 3-4 likes I wouldn’t mind fulfilling, the last quarter won’t be zero either!

To be honest, I bought these only after I noticed how my husband didn’t really dig the Guerlains (I also bought Eau Boise, which I forgot to list) and felt guilty because he often mentions that he likes Terre and feels nostalgic for Obsession…

The poll does not work for me, but if I could I would choose option “1”. I was quite restrained and only bought several decants (around 30 ml in total).

Profumum Roma Acqua Viva 6 ml
Keiko Mecheri Attar de Roses 8 ml
Annick Goutal Eau du Sud 10 ml
Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum 8 ml

    Around 40-45$ of damage.

    I bought
Chypre Mousse for a split and kept 40ml, so around 45€
Used bottle of Nuit Etoilee EdP, i like the EDT better, maybe resell it, payed 30€
Vintage Bottle of Royale Secret by Monteil for 15€
But i sold perfume decants for 40€,_so in all i did not spend much. .Maybe i can do better next time….

I bought way too much last quarter, and most of them were impulse buys due to sales, limited edition release, and my greatest enabler, eBay.

Hendley Perfumes for American Perfumer Bloodline 30ml $150
Amouage Journey Woman 25ml press “sample” $40
    L’Artisan Safran Troublant (vintage) 50ml $67
Bath and Body Works Coconut Lime Verbena 140ml partial body splash $17
Ormonde Jayne Orris Noir 50ml $75
    D.S. & Durga Poppy Rouge 50ml $50
    D.S. & Durga Isle Ryder 50ml $50
    Serge Lutens Vitriol d’Oeillet 50ml $59
Monsillage Eau de Celeri 50ml $50

I was extremely lucky! I don’t think I’ve ever checked out so fast. I used Shop Pay, I believe, so all my info was already stored. A generous NSTer sent me a sample of the first release, so I knew how good it is when I bought it.

EBay! I really wanted the shower gel, but the body splash was more cost effective. I started using a coconut shaving gel that reminded me of it, so that’s what inspired the purchase.

Not a drop. I did some extremely dangerous browsing on eBay and Maison Kurkdjian and Ormonde Jayne and the like but never actually committed. I’m trying to use up the completely insane number of samples I have before buying anything new, and then we’ll see.

It’s not as if I’m being virtuous. In the last quarter I bought a new phone, which I technically did not need but got a good deal (plus the old one was 3 years old and the battery was not what it should be), and a set of Airpods Pro, because my old Bluetooth earphones were rubbish. I regret nothing!

I got a new phone too. My old one worked fine but was even older than yours, and I was told they were going to stop updating it, so I feel just fine with the purchase.

But, also quite a bit of furniture / decorating things / etc, so I am not being virtuous either. There must be some goddess or celebrity icon that I should confess all of that to, but I do not know who it is.

Not going out to sniff bottles in the flesh (as it were) has definitely made me cut way back on perfume spending. I went in on a split and ordered a few samples from Luckyscent but the only actual bottle I recall getting was the small travel bottle of Zoologist Dragonfly. I figure all together these count as just one FB.

    2. Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights, 50mls
    3. Moschino Funny!, .8oz

Evil bay: Indochine, 50mls (the preciousssss)

A moderate confession for me. I bought Etat Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow, it’s a spicy fragrance, not unique, but very nice and I couldn’t resist the tie-in with the Dune novels. I got it from a place in Australia, so almost local.
I then made a leap into the unknown with my first blind buy – Chaldée by Jean Patou. I read a great review and also read that the heritage collection was being discontinued, then saw it at a New Zealand discounter. I nearly fell off my chair to find it locally. And I like it 🙂

5 bottles this time around. This is trending in the wrong direction…

    1. Dior Pure Poison EdP, 30mL
    2. Jean Patou 1000 EdP, 10mL travel spray
    3. Jean Patou 1000 EdT, 30mL
    4. Niki de Saint Phalle EdT, 50 mL
    5. Dior Poison Girl EdP, 30mL… this one hasn’t arrived yet, but I did pay for it in September.

Total = $217.71 this quarter. Eeeeek! Time to rein in the stress buying.

It was discontinued back in the ‘90s, I think. But you’re right: no one seems to mention it. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a fairly straightforward soliflore, or because it was a ‘cheap’/drugstore buy in later years, or what. In any case, this was a brand new ‘70s or ‘80s bottle which my grandmother had stored away for some reason. We both have May birthdays, and I love LOTV, so yay!

Give the Souffle Intense a little time. It is not the Shalimar I love, but I am trying to appreciate how current trends in perfume exist not just for the benefit of the perfumer, but because tastes vary. I think of it in the Mon Guerlain sort of line, and can enjoy it that way.

Bought a second-hand, back-up bottle of Douceur de Siam, since I have been wearing it on an almost daily basis. I had wanted Mimosa Pour Moi and I Miss Violet, so substitute-bought, cheaply, Jenny Glow Mimosa and Cardamom and HdP 1876. The latter was an adorable 15 ml bottle, but not the violet I’d hoped for, and the former was super-sweet at the beginning, but has a lovely drydown.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Nirvana Bourbon, bringing my total bottle count to 3. I also got 3 5ml that I didn’t count as I voted before actually reading the post-Whoops. I didn’t really have a plan as I kind of forgot fragrance existed until recently.

I was doing so well this year until the last two months, being indoors and constantly seduced by the frag groups led me to finally give in to my habit. I do want to get my bottle count back down to 100, a line that I held for many years and one I feel reasonable for my life. This quarter, I picked up Acorelle Terre de Cedre, Verveine Agrumes, and Jardin des Thes; Regime des Fleurs Vines; and Bastide Verveine du Sud–all thanks to enablers on this site! 🙂 Also Atelier des Ors Cheur des Anges and Blanc Polychrome, Ligne St. Barth Eau de St. Barth, and Profumum Roma Confetto. And five or so decants. Seeing it all in writing makes me feel ashamed and irresponsible, although in all fairness, I got most of them at quite reasonable prices and using discounts, and also swapped for the decants. I promise to TRY to do better for the remainder of the year and attempt to reach my shelf goal.

This quarter I was so restrained I think I might have blurred months together instead of just days. I bought:

    Travel size TF Lost Cherry
50mls Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue (before the prices go crazy)
A decant that I don’t have yet but paid for in September

Total outlay about $170. I will come in under budget this year big time because I had lots of cash set aside for my canceled trip to Paris.

Where did you buy the TF Lost Cherry travel size? I’m contemplating that one.

Gulp. Ok this quarter I have purchased:
    PdE Corsica Furoua
    PdE Cuir Ottoman
    Chanel No.19 EdP
    Guerlain Ginger Piccante
    4711 Mandarin & Cardamom
There are many decants which thankfully I don’t have to count.

Hi MossyBerry, Yes! It took me awhile to (I don’t know why) commit to a full bottle and I really don’t know why. It is such a beautifully constructed classy and classic perfume. I think you should just wear it ‘because’ it makes you feel good, not only for when you feel the need to dress up or go out.
Especially this year, why go without it?
Is it even possible that there is someone out there who wouldn’t smell glorious in this one?

I don’t actually know, but I have felt it was my personal duty to keep small perfume stores in business with my mail orders, so there’s definitely been a few. Atelier Materi Cuir d’Iris I can see from where I am sitting. Hmmm. Oh and Sticky Fingers. Also I am was worried IUNX was going to disappear so got the giant bottle of L’Ether and a whole bunch of Eau Sento. A variety of sample sets. And I know more that I am forgetting!

I did something similar with IUNX. I think it was a humanitarian gesture so I don’t think they count ?

The only thing I bought was the Bath and Body Works Country Apple body mist. Sprayed it once and it didn’t wow me. It was only $5 and it’s now going to be a gift for Christmas. I might have something more to report next quarter.

I did finally cave this quarter and buy a bottle of Corsica Furiosa. And there may have also been a bottle of Jicky that I purchased online late at night when I’d been reading a lot of Colette and was seized by a sudden fear that it would be discontinued. I’ve bought so little perfume over the past few years that I think Donatella will give me a pass, plus both were a sort of last-hurrah before single parenthood and reduced income set in.

I almost got through three months without buying anything, but I went to Whole Foods on Wednesday, and found that Pacifica fragrances were on sale. 🙂 I got a bottle of Island Vanilla for $17.59. I just felt like getting something fun.

No-buying for all of 2020, although my SIL did give me a bottle of Paris-Riviera in August for my birthday: not counting that even though I sent her the link.

I got busy yesterday while reading the comments so here’s my damage: after months of general ennui, I bought a partial bottle of SJP Lovely on eBay bcs I read a good review. Then Coco Mademoiselle Intense with my Ulta points, then the beautyhabit sale happened and I replaced my recently thunked bottle of Vanille Tonka and treated myself to Patchouli Intense, which I have really wanted for ages, and I just love it. That’s more perfume than I buy some years! I love them all though.

My first time to report: I blind bought lots and lots of full bottles. I broke an Ebay no buy. And that is all have to say about that. Except I loved them all.
