Thursday scent of the day 9/24

Posted by Robin on 24 September 2020 226 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, plus National Punctuation Day. Birthdays: Jim Henson, F. Scott Fitzgerald. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Dior Eau Sauvage, which Tintin can wear if he ever gets a few years older.

Reminder: 9/25 is National Comic Book Day...name a favorite comic book character, and wear the fragrance that suits him or her.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Tintin and his dog, Snowy, from the long running series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. (More reading: Coming to Terms With Tintin in The Atlantic.)

Lune Feline for Catwoman. It smells right for Selina – seductive, animalic, and the name of the scent (Cat moon) works well for both of her names. Catwoman = cat, Selina = moon.

Today I remembered that there are comic books for the Last Airbender (I only watched the animated sereis), so I know what I will wear tomorrow. 🙂

Excellent perfume choice. I loved Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. And I LOVED the Last Airbender…watched it on Netflix w/ daughter. Excellent show. I think it broke streaming records on Netflix. 😉

I know you love vanilla, and this one is a sexy vanilla.

The Last Airbender is so good! The characters and story that appeal both to kids and adults.

Siberian Musk by Areej le dore (the attar variant)

Sweet and mysterious, it smells like it is from another era. Its gorgeous stuff.

I think its something Mina Murray from the League of Extraordinary gentlemen could be wearing.

The Mina in this graphic novel is not like the Mina in Bram Stokers novel. In League of extraordinary gentlemen she an agent for the British secret service!

Hi all, my SOTD is Bal à Versailles by Jean Desprez, I think Cat Woman would wear this. Animalic, velvety, and musky – perfect.

I’ve added Tender Is The Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald to my re-read list.

Headed out for my walk, see everyone later! 🙂

I recently finished watching Gotham. Although well-done, it was very dark and intense.
Of course, Cat Woman (Selina) was my favorite character.
I adored the Penguin’s character also, quirky but he had a code, and I could respect that.

          You’re welcome!
I’d add, that some of the flours aren’t easy to come by. I need mine GF, and couldn’t substitute the brown rice flour for the Cup-4-Cup, which has dairy. It will change the outcome (texture).
I read the comments/questions/responses (you’ll see me in the comments!), which proved very helpful.

In Akro Dark, no thoughts of CP, just had a hard time getting to bed last night and it’s a bit gloomy today, so this is a perfect comfort scent.

Blessed are the moka coffee and the last of Sunday’s bacon-mushroom quiche which, along with this perfume, are helping me face the day ?

I feel like I’m hitting the 6-month slump in pandemic response – not by taking it less seriously, but just feeling drained emotionally. This too shall pass, but I suspect acknowledging it will also help. Hugs to anyone else feeling it!

Loose interpretation of CP today. A favorite of mine as a kid was the Japanese manga Kimba the White Lion. I loved it dearly. Can’t think of a perfect scent, so I decided to just go BWF in Narciso white cube. Maybe Kimba’s wild surroundings had gardenia.

Observation: as much as I respect caution and prudence against COVID, I’m not sure some over-restrictions are helpful. I popped into Kiehl’s to see if they could spray the musk scent on a card. No testers…not even for a store employee to handle. You have to buy it and if you don’t like it, return it. There has to be a better way.

I also followed my husband to Uniqlo so he could return something he bought online. Their new policy is you can only try on 3 items per day in fitting rooms. Per day. Now, one can argue the level of risk in trying on clothes, etc. but an arbitrary 3 items per day is random and silly, in my view. You can walk through the store touching all the items on the racks or folded on shelves. But putting a pair of jeans against your legs somehow adds to risk? Illogical and random rules like that reduce credibility. Is it better to just buy and then bear the risk of, once again, going back to the store to return an item?

    I’m rolling my eyes…

HA! You sound like Mr L.
We got a notice in the building (I live in a big apartment complex) asking tenets to stop using their keys to hit buttons because its ruining and scratching them up. Mr L gets into the elevator and a guy uses the key to hit his floor and puts it in his key in his jacket pocket. So he asks the guy why not just use your finger? After you have already put your hand in the pocket of where your keys are? That conversation did no end well.

Also, Mr L and I have had lots of conversations regarding meeting up with a family so that our kids can see their friends. I keep using the phrase “meet people where they are” (not in the literal sense) If they don’t do playgrounds, lets meet where they feel comfortable. A park, the esplanade, anywhere…

I gotta say I would personally prefer people err on the side of caution, even if it makes others roll their eyes.

The 3 items per day, I am sure, is to prevent anybody from spending too long in the store or in a dressing room, and while it may seem arbitrary, I personally think it’s sensible. There is plenty of data indicating that it matters how long you spend in an area in which the virus has been dispersed. It is not all about what you touch.

Anyway, don’t want to argue with anybody, but we do have plenty of people on here with serious health conditions who are terribly worried about covid, just like we have others who are not worried and are basically ready to get back to normal. So long as all of us here remain aware that not everybody feels the same way they do, we can all continue to get along, at least in the comments section 🙂

And pretty please, it is not specifically against the comment policy, but I really don’t want to debate how covid is transmitted or what is safe and what isn’t.

Absolutely no worries at all LizzieB. And did not even mean to call you out specifically, just seeing more of this kind of comment lately, understandably, and want us all to be careful.

I just have a feeling it is going to be a looooonnnnggg winter, and so we all need to do our best to balance complaining about restrictions and compassion, both for people who are afraid of covid and for the many people who are doing risky jobs so that others can live as normally as possible.

I hear you. At one point, I thought that so would never try on clothes again. I finally did at JJill about a month ago. The dressing room has 6 dressing areas and I’m quite positive they were socially distanced; however, they were allowing only 2 people at a time.

Sorry for the delay. I think they are both well done. I would be happy to send these your way when I have sampled them once more…just let me know. I ordered several samples from Krystal Fragrance…first time ordering from there and they were a little delayed shipping and the owner was very apologetic and included extra samples. I really like their Rouge Smoking and ordered a 10 ml decant so I can send you my partial original manufacturer’s sample too. The quest is, at times, almost all consuming!!! 🙂

I’m blissfully happy and completely uncomic in Bois des Iles. This scent makes me feel like a total sophisti-cat.

Maybe I can find a suitable character from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman to match this to.

They do stink if you disturb them too much — the smell is weird and sort of cilantro-ish. My son hates it but I don’t really mind it, except that it says stink bug and I do hate stink bugs.

I’m in 10 Corso Como. Every time I wear this I decide I like it better than Tam Dao. Then I wear Tam Dao and decide I like IT better.? I finally gave up and I have a bottle of both, lol. Mmmmmm sandalwood.
We have been on a Daniel Craig James Bond kick for the past couple of weeks. We’ve watched the first 3 and tonight we plan to watch Spectre. I reserved the blue ray from the library and can go pick it up today. This is the second time I’ve reserved something from the library and the pick up system is quite interesting. I call and they give me a time I can pick up my item. The staff put it on a table outside of the library in a plastic bag with my last name. It’s kind of on the honor system. As I told my husband, someone could easily just take all of the bags on the table and then what? Lots of library fines for sure! I guess it must be working though or they wouldn’t continue to do it.

Oh, I’m a huge fan of Daniel Craig as Bond and look forward to the new movie coming out. I never thought someone would surpass Sean Connery in my affections and maybe he hasn’t but he’s sure close. That sounds like an excellent project. If you want to see more of Daniel Craig (in several senses), I can recommend the film about Francis Bacon’s life where he stars as Bacon’s lover George Dyer. Derek Jacobi stars as Bacon and Tilda Swinton is also in it. Warning: mature audiences only, some graphic/gruesome stuff, and the director tried to mimic Bacon’s visual style in creating the film style. Might not have succeeded but I find if well worth watching.

I meant to wear Italian Leather today, but the hand went straight to AdP Iris Nobile instead. Oops. And in some kind of irony, on National Punctuation Day my work computer suddenly decided not to recognize the ampersand character. I work from home and connect to the work system using citrix, and that connection occasionally and inexplicably cross-wires all of the special-character keys, but today’s issue was new – pressing shift-2 just did absolutely nothing. Luckily, the usual disconnect-and-restart seems to have been the cure. First world problems!

SOTD is Poison esprit de parfum. Only after I put it on did I decide it is what Veronica Lodge of the Archies would wear. I only like comic books if I am talking to someone who is a real fan and I get “drawn in,” but I did always read Archie whenever I could. We are talking many moons ago, but I somehow remember thinking Veronica’s obnoxious qualities were just funny rather than offensive. Like I hope mine are. =^v^=

Oriza L. Legrand Vetiver Royal Bourbon. Okay, this is the best of the three Orizas I’ve tried this week. Burst of wintergreen to start, earthy vetiver and sandalwood in the base. Wonderful stuff! Immortelle is listed, but thankfully I get no cheap maple flavored oatmeal. ?

Hello! No scent yet today, but I have started using the Mistral Verbena liquid soap that I got from C.O. Bigelow. To me, it’s a relatively subtle citrusy scent, with some herbal tones. I’m sure I’ll hear soon whether the other residents of the household find it subtle enough. lol.

Update on my health woes story of the other day: My head is better. Thank you to the well-wishers. 😀 As for the rest, I’ve been on a “BRAT” (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) diet on and off. Bland food has been my friend. 🙂

The past three days have kind of been a loss for me for getting anything much done. I have read some good books in the last week or so, though.

Now that I’ve seen the streaming video version of the musical “Hamilton,” the authors’ notes in the Hamilton’s Battalion anthology weren’t lost on me this time. The two stories I’ve read from there are “The Pursuit Of…” by Courtney Milan and “Promised Land” by Rose Lerner. Then I read other books by Courtney Milan and Rose Lerner, which I thought were good. Alyssa Cole wrote the other story in the anthology, and though I haven’t read that one, I’ve read a couple of other stories of hers lately, too.

I appreciate having representation of protagonists of color and other characters of color in historical romances. I also appreciate Rose Lerner’s portrayal of Jewish protagonists, because I haven’t seen that a lot in historical romances, either.

Thanks for all the nice thoughts yesterday about our new house! I’ve been so stressed that I’ve forgotten to be excited.

The problem with sampling perfumes with my favorite notes is that I want them all: Orris Tattoo on one arm and O, Unknown! on the other.

Sotd is No.19 edp, because I had a very early dentist appt before work. I will have to get a chipped tooth fixed next month. I’m matching my sotd with Lucy from Peanuts. I’m also hoping someone has a perfume to match with PigPen!?

Finished off the oily dregs of my PdE Ambre Russe decant today. I’m smelling rich and mighty fine. I’ve been really focused on using up samples and decants this month. Whenever I get anxious that I have too much perfume, I like to work on finishing things up. It still doesn’t offset what I add to my collection, but it’s an easy, immediate action I can take.

Ah, F Scott Fitzgerald! He was my favorite writer for many years, until I grew older and fell in love with too many writers to have a favorite. His grave is not far from where I grew up in Maryland. A friend and I used to visit his grave sometimes and read him poetry. (We were too young at first, and then too law-abiding, to drink at his grave, apropos though that would have been.)

Wearing Slowdive because I needed a hug this morning.

No I didn’t! I didn’t even realize his gravesite was in MD until I just looked it up (though of course it is). Baltimore wasn’t close to me, and in any case I was never a huge Poe fan. Have you been? How is it?

He was a favorite of mine too.

I never understood why his grave was in Rockville, in that horrid cemetery (I hope I have the right place, I remember it being right by Rockville Pike. As much as I love going to old graveyards, I never did go in that one).

Yes, that’s the one! I always liked it there 🙂 but yes, the noise from Rockville Pike is disagreeable. I assume it wasn’t there when the cemetery was built. And I don’t know why he’s buried there, either!

After thinking I only read very few comic books, the above picture reminded me that I did read all or most of Asterix and a good amount of Lucky Luke as well.
Let’s just pretend this occurred to me before I put on Bois d’Ombrie by Eau d’Italie, because maybe it smells like the woods around Asterix’s and Obelix’s village!
This is from a little sample that came with a swap. I’m smitten!

Apart from the essence I have the edt, I opted to get it because it is quite different from it, the edt is a green lily, sparkling, the deep might be a Good compromise, maybe.

    TinTin! As promised!
Ok, I am already feeling the pressure of ‘National Punctuation Day’, I KNOW I use a lot of exclamation points and hyphens in my posts so a ‘mia culpa’ and ‘perdetemi’ is already said aloud to all.

SOTD: is the new Caron Aimez-moi Comme Je Suis.
Robin, where are you? I purchased fb for one of my many brothers who has always been a hazelnut maniac and could use some belly laughs these days. Plus I found the bottle design very appealing and had to wet my appetite.
My free tester was irresistible so I didn’t wait to sample it. The opening notes are ones I have been chasing like feathers all summer; grapefruit and ginger. Immediately comes the HAZELNUT in the most beautiful way, creamy and just sweet enough to make it inviting and distracting. One spray on my shoulder was pretty noticeable, and silage lasted for hours. Tonka and tobacco in the perfect porportions made an amazing dry down. It was not cloying at all, it was soft but persistent. I haven’t sniffed ANY thing like this before but I really really like it. I think it could be a ‘winner’ for Caron.

I’m checking in late again today, it seems my days are scattered and have various random activities. Like, I ran out of cat food (How could I let that happen?) and had to do an emergency trip to Petsmart. At noon I had my first haircut in six months, except for the rather bad one I executed on myself. I’m so happy with my new cut! Then I went to my doctor at 2 to get my poor big toe examined because it still really hurts and is swollen after 3 weeks. He will look at the x-ray that the urgent care place did and let me know but thought nothing is too wrong, it’s just that it’s taking a while to heal. Maybe I should tape it. Anyway I’m wearing St. Clair Eve today because it is beautiful on any day. It should go with some rather rebellious woman super-hero like maybe Wonder Woman, except I think that Diana Prince (her ‘normal’ alter ego) should have an even better option and I am not sure what. It should be powerful and Amazonian. I love Gail Gadot’s Wonder Woman so much! What a fabulous film that was. It’s still gray and overcast here but at least it’s cooler, thank goodness!

Random question: does anyone know if the Frag..net travel spray-sized containers can be opened and re-filled? They have twist-up spay button; not the same as the travel sprays they sell. If so, how do you open them? I bought one thinking I could refill it from the larger bottle of ‘fume, but when I got it, it seemed like it did not want to be opened.

Today’s SOTD was Ormonde Jayne’s Tiare. Comic book characters and their scents will be hard for me! Probably my favorite comic book characters as a child who grew up in Brussels were Asterix le Gaulois, and the Schtroumpfs (I just cannot call them “Smurfs”). Gonna have a hard time matching a fragrance to those!
But if I can go the other way ’round, I’ll take Chanel No. 19 and match that with Poison Ivy, lol.

Nuit Etoilee is a great idea, I have that! Maybe I’ll take the easy way out and go with L’Heure Bleue for the Schtroumpfs, though … so many comics, so little time.
