Tuesday scent of the day 9/22

Posted by Robin on 22 September 2020 193 Comments

Happy Autumnal Equinox! It's also Tuesday and Hobbit Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada Infusion d'Iris, because tiffanie wore it yesterday. Tea at the moment is Kenilworth Estate OP from Upton.

Reminder: 9/25 is National Comic Book Day...name a favorite comic book character, and wear the fragrance that suits him or her.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Adam West as Batman, Alan Napier as Alfred and Burt Ward as Robin, from the Batman TV series (3 seasons 1966-1968).

This pic is just right for my SOTD!

Yesterday Calypso mentioned Batman and the scent he would wear. I cannot believe I forgot about Zoologist Bat. I do not have it anyway, but this is such an obvious choice.

Anyway, when I read ‘Batman’ I immediately thought of Black Phantom by Kilian, and this is what I am wearing today. It would fit Batman, the Shadow and even Darkwing Duck. 😀 I really like this scent, even though usually I do not care for chocolate fragrances. This one has the right combination of bitter, sweet, woody and smoky notes. A good gourmand.

I thought of Sky Puppies for Batgirl….I wish I had a sample of that one! Love that name….

This one, with a bat on the bottle? https://sucreabeille.com/products/sky-puppy
It looks very cute! Barbara could keep a bottle like this in her handbag, just to remind herself of her secret identity.

I thought of Lune Feline (Cat Moon) for Catwoman and Perle de Mousse for Poison Ivy (because ivy is the main note). Katy Perry’s Purr and Miaow would work for Catwoman too.

I’m in a rose oil I bought at Christmas in the Bryant Park markets in NYC. The scent has likely faded a bit…I forgot about it. But Stella sprayed on top creates a nice waft of rose.

Spoke to a nice contact tracer yesterday, who said we should just ignore the calls and let go to voicemail unless we need assistance with food delivery or testing or need to more seriously separate from a household member. I guess we aren’t alone in feeling annoyed at times.

I do love rose for comfort, and these are strange times for sure. Everything just seems so difficult and frustrating.
      Hugs to you LizzieB,

And…I’m thankful for the advice to just ignore the calls. I just ignored an unknown 212 call and got a voicemail from a guy reading the same script I’ve heard and seen via text many times in the last 10 days. I guess the good news is…it’s providing people jobs.

I used to LOVE watching those old Batman shows. My brothers and I would give pretend POWS and BAMS and WHACKS to each other…. 🙂

Doing a little perfume BAM this morning in Chloe Nomade. I’m trying a sample for the first time, and the plum note is a bit strong (BAM!) but slowly drying down a bit….Nice scent for the autumn equinox methinks!

I bought a bottle of Old Spice (Classic) from my local wally world, and I wore it all weekend. I thought that I would try it out at work. I really like it, especially after the first blast. After the first few minutes it calms down, and the spice aspect blooms on my skin.

    I wore infusion d’iris yesterday!

Today i am wearing Jubilation XXV

I bet Bruce Wayne has something like this in his collection, but I like the idea of Selena stealing it from him and wearing it herself (when she is not on the job of course… Would be a bad idea to wear perfume when you want to sneak into someone’s house ?).

    Hi all!

Radiating cosmic goodness in Sun Moon Stars today, a weird opal of a perfume. I was reading of Fragrantica that Lagerfeld wanted it to smell of high quality paper and while that may slightly come across, I don’t think it would satisfy such a unique ask.

Getting pelted by Beta down here. Luckily I live on high ground.

    Stay safe everyone!

Not sure about ultimate but maybe ultimateS 😉

I am trying not to buy FBs unless it’s excellent, an A rating, etc. as there is a never-ending flow of new perfumes (especially in the last 5-10 years) and with so much perfume in my cupboards, I notice the levels don’t go down much even w/ time. ?

A generous NSTer sent me some Gallagher Wicked Good recently and it’s excellent…a great blend of chocolate, vanilla and tonka that is almost chewy/tobacco-y to my nose…very natural smelling w/ little or no synthetic smell. It is FB worthy. So that is the ultimate…for right now. 😉

What do you think of these, She-ra? I’m always looking for a good chocolate scent. I haven’t found what I’m looking for yet. Montale Chocolate Greedy was a possibility but a bit bitter or something – the drydown didn’t work well for me.

I think Over the Chocolate Shop is very good. It’s a very dry milk chocolate to my nose with some slight vanilla and nuts. It’s worth trying.

Silk, Lace & Chocolate reminds me of an artificial chocolate strawberry scent and Hello Kitty/Sanrio merchandise but not necessarily in a bad way. 😉

I also recently tried Gallagher Wicked Good and wrote some comments above on it…it is excellent but probably equal parts vanilla and chocolate…some might even say more vanilla.?

Inoui is one of the unsung greats. It is how I imagine the forest around Totoro’s tree smells–piney, herbal, and green with that thread of jasmine weaving in and out followed by the lovely mossy, myrrh-y civet at the base. You smell fantastic.

And now we are really on the downhill slide to the shortest day of the year.? It’s sunny and unseasonably warm this week, so I will enjoy it will it lasts.
SotD is Derviche from Rogue Perfumery which came to me amongst a huge box of samples from a generous NSTer. Looking forward to the freebiemeet so I can pass it along (the big box I mean). If anyone has an early interest, let me know. I’d like it to go to a regular NSTer. This reminds me of something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s a rich fragrance but wears close to the skin on me.
Played another afternoon game of scrabble with madtownteen yesterday and I only lost by 2 points!?? The fact that all 3 of my children are now at the age where they are all smarter than me is a bit of a double edged sword.?

A student recently wanted to play connect 4 online (he I think was compelled to ask for an engineering assignment, not of his own volition) – and I was like “there is no way”. I would lose sooo much credibility right there. 🙂

Happy autumn everyone! SOTD is Musc Ravageur, which to my nose isn’t so much ravageur as gingerbread-in-the-sunshine. We’ve been blessed with very season-appropriate weather today — clear blue skies, golden sunshine, soon-to-be 80 degrees, walnuts and grapes almost ready to harvest and a good haul of local apples and homegrown rainbow popcorn on the table.

Scent: following Robin’s lead in Prada Infusion d’Iris. Lovely stuff, and a favorite. I wandered away from it for quite a while, but it’s very nice to come back to. Have a touch of Demeter Salt Air on the other arm, but it’s fading.

Recent reading: Book of Delights by Ross Gay

    Tea: brewed-at-home Dunks coffee

Mixed emotions: Solstice. We are having lovely weather, and I saw a maple sporting fall colors yesterday. Starting to decorate for Halloween a little earlier than usual (I generally wait for October), but why not? I’ll just move into it slowly.

Bath and Body Works is going to release their winter offerings sometime in October. The goofy thing is that they already released some of them already. When they had that wallflower refill sale, I grabbed the Winter and Frozen Lake ones.

SOTD – Tempete d’Automne, a wonderfully cozy sandalwood, to counteract the little issues. My supervisor has told me that if I can’t fix my lousy internet connections, I will have to come in to the Unversity all the time to work, because it is decreasing my productivity. 🙁
I do need a new gig. We have been trying to get a more stable internet connection ever since we moved to this place, so I don’t have much hope of getting something to work better. I called Verizon, but got distracted by my malfunctioning phone. I am doing an update now. if that doesn’t fix it, they are going to send me a new phone….which would be nice, but not really what the main problem is….and all of this is distracting me from getting much done….argh, sorry to sound like a whiny baby…

      Not good news; however:
      – were you not the one whom your supervisor volunteered to get other people’s work done? If yes, I would question the supervisor re: decreasing productivity. There’s a saying “If you want to get the work done, give it to the busy people.” Are you actually carrying other people’s workload? Not a fair assessment in my opinion of this is the case
      – having just had a shouting match with a Verizon TECH support person, I do not blame you one bit for being distracted. That said, if you get the right tech person, s/he can assist you in prioritizing the devices. I have not done this myself.
      – You may be surprised at the number of devices that are using your wireless network. I put the devices I don’t use on Airplane mode. It’s easy enough to toggle.
      – install a wireless booster. I got mine from Amazon (< $25). It should cover any dead spots but then it would also depend on how big your house is and where you place the booster. Certainly worth a try. Also, if I can install it, anyone can as I am the least common denominator when it comes to technology
      – My last resort is to get cable. I am resisting as I am convinced it’s not my internet speed but our work network that’s an issue, usually for part of the afternoon.

      Good luck!

I wish I really liked the stuff they carry at Ulta and Kohl’s. It would be more convenient and so much cheaper. I go to Ulta and Kohls and try various things every time I am there, but noooooo!
I just got my sister hooked on sample sites. She wanted to buy some new thing just because she liked the ad copy, basically. I suggested she sample first. She called me up and said, “You were right, it doesn’t smell the way it is supposed to!” LOL.

Meridifay, not sure if you have full internet access or some other service, e.g. DSL. If you have cable, talk to your supplier as hajusuuri advises.

For wireless coverage in our home, we boost signal within the house using Eero. Not expensive and not difficult to set up. We have a mostly Apple/Linux house and use Comcast for Internet. Pretty painless.

In Maine, we rely on DSL, old school but it’s a last-mile issue with the town and the local providers. Connectivity is very iffy, so this year to boost signal to one house we used gear from RadioLabs – not linking but a simple web search will get you there. Fussy install, requires a Windows machine to configure, needs direct line of sight to a reliable Internet/DSL source, antennas must point directly at each other despite what documentation says, and our renters destroyed two devices. Not ideal, but it got us through the summer ok. The RadioLabs folks are friendly but it requires some phone time with them to install.

      Good luck!

    **************************

In other news which I meant to bring up before: two weeks ago, for the very first time in my 6 years of voting by mail (all of them), I received a postcard saying that my Primary ballot was accepted ?. It makes me wonder ? about my previous ballots – were they accepted? ?rejected? ? (and if rejected, the reason ?). As with many, I want MY vote to count. The ex-friend had previously said Don’t Vote, then in a FB posting, said Vote, and the latest FB posting on Sunday, THREATENED those who did not vote her way; she seriously just doesn’t know when to ?. I have decided not to engage because it will be a waste of MY time and I have actually written off what I thought was a friendship. Divorcing friends is an option, in case you are faced with a similar situation.

I love comic books and as a book seller have often found that some of the most innovative writing takes place in this format. Some of my favorite books are actually graphic novels and I am thinking in particular of the Penelope Bagieu’s excellent California Dreamin’, Cass Elliot before the Mamas and the Papas. If you are not familiar with the illustrated Strunk and White that Maira Kalman did or her witty and utterly charming Max books, remedy this. Her illustrated Cake book is awesome also. But I digress. If you love the novels of Neil Gaiman, you must read Sandman, I can think of many perfumes that might suit this fascinating comic book character. If you have viewed and enjoyed films of the Marvel universe and are partial to an Avenger, you have a jumping off point! I totally see Iron Man/Tony Stark in a Tom Ford fragrance and maybe even Metallique! I have chosen my favorite comic book character. She-Hulk! Cousin of Bruce Banner, Jennifer Susan Walters, lawyer by day and then the mighty She-Hulk when danger is near. I think Chanel No. 19 for the lawyer side and I have not yet chosen a big and bold greenie reflective of the super hero side.

My son was at one time a big consumer of graphic novels, but despite loving Gaiman’s “regular” prose works he did not like Sandman, and as a consequence we don’t own them so I can’t read them, which is too bad! He does have an impressive library of other modern graphic works though.

All the talk of Batman made me look for Zoologist Bat but the first one I found was Dragonfly so I put that on instead. I’m not coming up with any comic book character match, but it’s a suitable scent for our extremely wet weather. Whew. When I was growing up, my grandma lived just down the street and I went to her house most afternoons for piano practice. Up in the attic were stacks and stacks of old comic books from my uncle, aunt, and dad. I would pore over them. They were stylistically s different looking from the ones of my time. Lots of Archie and Veronica and also Little Lulu and, I think, Iggy. Anyone else remember them?

    Hello!

    Health woes story below:

Drink of the day so far is Gatorade. I think I gave myself food poisoning Sunday night, and my body tried hard to rid me of whatever it deemed poisonous all of Monday. It was pretty gross. At one point I passed out and came to on the bathroom floor. Mom later asked about a dent low on the bathroom wall, and I realized that it matched a big bump on my head. I had thought the headache was all internal. I checked in with my GP, and he listed the symptoms of concussion for me. I don’t have any that are beyond how I would normally feel, except the remains of a headache. He advised me to rest as much as possible for the next several days. That sounds good to me.

    Health woes story over.

I had forgotten how campy that Batman TV show was. I watched it as a child. I was much more into collecting Marvel comics when it came to comic books, especially Chris Claremont’s run on The Uncanny X-Men, before he got rid of my favorite characters: Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Colossus. And I thought Peter David was doing interesting things with The Incredible Hulk comic.

I liked the first couple of Superman movies, some decades ago now, and aspects of the X-Men movies. I like a lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies are pretty much lost on me, because I don’t know those characters and their history. I think the only one I’d heard of before was Rocket Raccoon.

I keep calling the Carol Danvers version of Captain Marvel Ms. Marvel instead, because I knew that she’d been introduced as Ms. Marvel in the 1970s and I remembered reading her interactions with Rogue in the 1980s. I also remember reading comic book issues that featured the first woman who was Captain Marvel in the 1980s. She wasn’t Carol Danvers. There were some Easter eggs in the Captain Marvel movie for comic book readers, though. 🙂

Thanks, lillyjo! I took a couple of Tylenol this morning, and the headache has let up. It was a milder headache than I had had yesterday. Mom was very concerned yesterday when I told her that I had passed out, and much more worried when she saw the dent in the wall. I didn’t realize at the time that there was an external cause for the splitting headache. Mom felt better after I checked with my doctor about it this morning.

I briefly considered going to the hospital to get it checked out, but I didn’t have the energy to deal with the ride there and then all the paperwork, plus the extra steps added on now because of the coronavirus. And I didn’t want the expense, either. I figured I’d be better off just lying down at home, and then if I developed head injury symptoms that seemed alarming enough to me, I’d go to the hospital. I’m not recommending that decision for others, but I knew I couldn’t concentrate enough to do the paperwork and didn’t want the bills.

My goodness neyronrose, that is scary! Hope you are getting plenty of rest even if you don’t think you have a concussion.

Yes, thank you, Robin. I slept a lot of the afternoon, and when I got up, my headache was gone. 🙂

Yikes! Food poisoning is bad enough, but a knock to the head that is bad enough for concussion worries just makes things that much worse. I hope that you are feeling better today, and do NOT have any more misadventures like that any time soon.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I have had both food poisoning and concussions. I feel your pain.)

Thanks for empathizing, Jalapeno. 🙂 Mom calls medical things like that “the wrong kind of excitement” as far as exciting events for the family go. I’m hoping we avoid any more misadventures like that for some time, yes.

Very scary, neyronrose! Please take it easy. Maybe you shouldn’t sleep for too long at a time?

Echoing hajusuuri’s advice. That was something I was told when I had my concussion in college. A friend who lived in the same dorm I did was assigned the task of waking me up every 2 or 3 hours if I fell asleep that night.

Hope you are feeling better and better day by day! I think the not sleeping too long is more an issue in the first 24 hours after a concussion. You might be exhausted from the food poisoning, too.

First, Hi Robin, and so tickled to be part of a CP! I remember mentioning the song, but not which perfume! Je Reviens, maybe? Hmm, I will be thinking of a new one. SOTD is La Fille de Berlin, blind buy from Frag…net. I thought I was going to get an older white label tester, but I got a 50ml black label tester. I have not looked up the batch code yet. I love it, and will wear it tomorrow which is my first day back after vacation. I did a split week, so it will be nice to work just three days. Have a good week, all!

Wonder what your research on the batch code will reveal?

I first stopped at Raiders of the Lost Scent, but they don’t discuss the newer black label SL collection. CheckFresh did not recognize the code. But at checkcosmetic dot net, when I entered the code, which is 0052NM, a date of 2-21-2020 popped up. As I said, my batch wears very well – I try to be sanguine about “missing the boat” on some original releases, but if LFdB was ever better, I still would think the one I got was special. Tomorrow is “take it to work day.”

    Whew… what a day!
I started off in Mad Madame which was a good choice. I had to do a return at ULTA and spritzed one of the Gucci Bloom flankers. They all smell very similar. I am still curious to try the new one though.

Thanks for the report on all those Gucci Bloom flankers. I’ve only ever smelled the original, and like it quite a bit.

I have a question for the fine folks here at NST. Has anyone bought anything from eCosmetics.com? If so, how was your experience? I’ve found some items of interest there recently, but know nothing about the business.

Another gorgeous early fall day here. Sigh. Feeling melancholy as a result. ????

SOTD = back in Deep Red.

SotD = Breath of God + Infusion d’Iris

holy fantastic fragrances, Batman! These layer pretty well.

I’m actually in the remains of Infusion d’Iris from last night. I applied three times yesterday – early morning, lunchtime, and bedtime. Breath of God revived the lingering traces of IdI, a very nice surprise.

Thank you to Robin for sharing the Prada-love with me today. 😉
