Thursday scent of the day 9/17

Posted by Robin on 17 September 2020 187 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! Also, happy International Country Music Day and Constitution Day. Birthdays today: Billy the Kid, William Carlos Williams, Hank Williams, Ken Kesey. RIP Stanley Crouch, and thanks for the education. What fragrance are you wearing?

I have a serious soft spot for today's fragrance, vintage Old Spice. It reminds me of junior high, plus, I was rather surprised to discover, much later, that it's an excellent carnation perfume.

Reminder: on 9/18 the topic is Soft spot...wear a perfume that you may or may not wear often, and may or may not really love, but that remains dear to you for some other reason. Suggested by Kanuka.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Masque Milano L’Atessa. How much I love, adore this gorgeous iris!

I had a very good night sleep and I feel very rested!
It is going to be warm today, so I want to take advantage of a nice long walk and go to the bakery to get some fresh italian bread and then to the post office to mail the swapmeet packages.
I am glad is almost Friday! Looking forward to the weekend!

    Happy Thursday!

Yay for a baking day! I made chocolate chip cookie dough last week and froze most of it. I find it very comforting to think I COULD have a fresh chocolate chip cookie (or three) whenever I want one! Enjoy playing in the kitchen! (And sorry to hear we’ve been sharing our smoke with you. They say “sharing is caring,” but I’m not so sure about that.)

It has been reformulated and renamed Both Sides of Clouds (the original formula was mostly naturals and $$$$). I haven’t smelled the current version yet but will when I get back to SD next month. They have it at Perfumology.

Hi friends! I recently received a perfume package gift from a lovely fairy and am working from home today so I can play with it a bit. I’m sampling two iris fragrances: Iris Perle (Les Indemodables) and Iris Lumiere (Shalini). My original plan was to not peek and spray blind, but one turned out to be truly terrible on my skin, and I HAD to look up what on earth could be in it that would make me squirm. That’s Iris Lumiere, which smells kinda like dirt, but I like dirt! Apparently I’m picky about my dirt. From the notes listed, I should like this but it’s a scrubber. I think I like Iris Perle, which at the moment smells like lemon meringue pie.
I hope you all have some moments of peace today.

Thank you for the mini review, lemming happily killed for Iris Lumière. I’ve smelled Iris Perle and liked it but not enough to buy. Wishing you peace as well.

I figured out that it must be an overdose of galbanum in Iris Lumiere that bothers me. Although I’m usually a big fan, it’s very dense and murky here – similar to the stale vase water syndrome some people are familiar with. Iris Perle was pleasant enough but that’s about it.
Thank you for the kind words. 🙂

Hi all, my SOTD is Shalimar Souffle Intense. Pillowy soft Incense and vanilla, if only the opening would last a tad bit longer. That’s my favorite part of the scent.
The hubby is working from home today in a day-long Zoom meeting.
Headed out for a four mile walk. 🙂

Oh, I love Shalimar Souffle! I think you’ll love it. 😀
To me, it’s literally a hug in a bottle. It does wear close to the skin, but lasts for about eight hours. Much like Kate Walsh’s Boyfriend, it’s very cozy and cashmere-sweater worthy.
It reminds me a little bit of Dior’s Addict, though a tad less floral. I may do a side by side comparison at some point.

I’m wearing New Musk Man for the first time in a while. I don’t know if I oversprayed or what, but today I’m just not feeling it and it is bothering me. Strange, because it is one of my desert island scents. Yesterday’s Dzonghka was much better. I may have to scrub it off.

I got busy in the afternoon and didn’t have a chance to get back to NST and comment back to everyone, but I read all your comments and appreciate them all!? My son arrived safely at his destination last night after two very long days on the road. Now I can fully breathe a sigh of relief, and start planning my trip out there.?
It’s a gorgeous morning here. Went for an early run along the lake and fall is definitely in the air.

Ha! That’s awesome.? My husband would love that, it’s one of his favorite movies. We meant to watch it with our college daughter this summer before she left, but didn’t get around to it.
Well, he went out west a few years ago on spring break with some buddies and fell in love with it. He’s had the itch to move out there ever since. He’s young, now is the time to do it. My hope is he comes back “home” in a few years.

Briefly dropping in to say I’m CP compliant for the first time this week. I’m wearing Orris Noir, which is lovely, spicey, and not very complicated. I don’t see comments about it from others, and I always liked it from way back my first niche sample set. Finally bought a bottle on discount a few weeks ago, and I’m so glad I can enjoy it when I want to!

I’m sorry to hear about the poor air in San Diego. I hear the poor air may be returning over the weekend. My face has been glued to my i-Phone app AirVisual.
Thankfully, the air quality in SF is much better yesterday and today! I’ve been on three walks just to roaming about – trying to make hay while the sun is shining. 🙂

Poll compliant today in Brin de Reglisse, the first Hermessence I bought. And this was back when they were a full $100 cheaper than they are more. I went through my full bottle and finally got a replacement. Smells just like I like it.

    Stay safe all!

What I can tell from smelling all 4 new fragrances is that the brand might be going in a new direction, abandoning their heavy character and going a lighter route that probably appeals more to Western audience. Who knows?

Thanks for the birthday wishes. This morning was pretty eventful. My aunt left this morning and I had to say something to her when she was brushing her teeth. My bathroom sink, no matter what has been slow and she doesn’t need to have the facet running while she is brushing her teeth because of it. Well, you don’t need to have th facet running full blast the whole time no matter what. Don’t know why she needs to do that and waste water, so I have to clean the sink. Was on hold for a half an hour to complain to Panera. Don’t know what happened but Sunday’s French Onion was way too salty and they were way too skimpy with the croutons and cheese. It almost seemed like the workers thought that the croutons and cheese were worth more than gold. About to get into the shower and wash off the LADDM and switch over to Lyric since it’s chilly out.

Robin, the mention of Old Spice makes me think of my father. It was his aftershave, and it brings back such happy memories. I need to find a vintage bottle.

My mother was a Chanel No. 5 person, if she wore scent at all. For some reason No. 5 smells awful on me, although it’s great on my sister.

Commando today. Allergies acting up and I’m coughing a lot, decided not to add another layer of potential irritant.

Praying for everyone suffering from wildfires, smoke and flooding. I’m waiting for the swarms of locusts to appear.

Ideally what you want is an old bottle of Old Spice that’s been gathering dust in somebody’s medicine cabinet….vintage is better but seems crazy to pay much for it.

I’m non-CP-compliant in Traversée du Bosphore. Another day of breatheable air (so far) and it feels like a gift. Yesterday evening my son and I stayed up past his bedtime, shucking rainbow popcorn in the backyard, chasing dragonflies, and delighting in the chance to be outside. I’m finding that I’ve become weirdly wary of social interaction after spending so much time in isolation, and am struggling with some work plans that will put me in group interactions in unfamiliar places this afternoon and tomorrow. Not sure whether to hide in my den or force myself to go forth…

Had a bit of a perfume fail this morning when I discovered upon spraying one of my arms and my neck that my Bond No 9 Brooklyn travel spray had gone off. I scrubbed myself with rubbing alcohol to get it off and applied the very strong and perfumey West Side by Bond instead. Bond No 9 is a brand that was really popular when I got into niche, so I do have a soft spot for a few of them. In particular, I have a soft spot for Brooklyn because it’s the perfume that comes closest to smelling like my beloved Crabtree & Evelyn Gardener’s Hand Cream. Sad I had to throw away a 90% full travel spray, but I’ve had it since it first came out in 2008.

It was sad how much I looked forward to my mid week grocery trip after work yesterday. Since I’ve been WFH since March and can’t go out for walks with the unhealthy air, the only time I’ve been getting out is for groceries (and taking down the trash, recycling, and compost). I enjoyed sitting in the a/c in my car and took my time while at the store. It was definitely a much more pleasant experience than I usually have there. I even brought home a cheap little skeleton with a jack o’lantern head for a little early Halloween decor. Please, please let the rain clear up our air tomorrow!

I’m wearing Ecstasy, by Tiziana Terenzi, from my blind buy package. It’s pretty, has good strength (it’s an extrait) and sillage, but doesn’t strike me as being unusually beautiful or otherwise really compelling. I’m hoping the dry down makes me more ecstatic.

So far, still no ecstasy. 🙂 I don’t dislike it at all, and it has a sort of “grand perfume” vibe going, but I don’t think I’m going to need to wear it a lot. This is the first of the line that I’ve sniffed. Be happy to send this along to you, AngelaB, so that you can round out your sampling of the line. Give me a holler at lisadarty in the land of the haute mayle if you’d like it (it’s a Fragrancenet travel spray).

I have mostly a non-compliant stash with me so I veered off again today in Nightingale by Zoologist.
It’s a funky fun crazy first wear. I am getting some floral that’s sweet and fruity then green underneath but it’s GOOD. Now there’s smoke too. It’s an extrait. Here’s the note list below. It appears it was atleast a finalist in a competition or two recently also.
Top notes are bergamot, lemon and saffron; middle notes are plum blossom, red rose and violet; base notes are agarwood (oud), patchouli, sandalwood, oakmoss, olibanum, white musk, labdanum and ambergris. I am feeling the lemon, saffron, plum blossom and violet with the rose, some patch too already. It’s taking me on an adventure for sure.
Happy Thursday all. My heart goes out to all those in flood areas and fires too.

I’m in Dior Belle de Jour, a very pretty and fruity rose. Not pretty enough to buy, however. It’s too sweet for me. Aaaaand the price is too steep for me.

The SA’s at Dior as a rule don’t give samples, so I brought my own atomizer a la the intrepid hajusuuri. They were reluctant, but agreed to share some juice. This was from an outing pre-Covid.

Picked up groceries via Curbside this morning. The neighbors are putting in a pool, and the noise is obnoxious. The pupster is a little high strung and does NOT want to use her back yard restroom. I may have to leash walk her in the front yard for the next few days. ?
Need to get on the stick and package up my swaps! Y’all have a good day and stay safe!

LOL. The Dior store did not even want to decant for me but said I can do it. I brought with me a 5mL metallic travel spray and proceeded to help myself to Mitzah. I got to about 2mLs before another SA came out and said I was not allowed to do that. I told her (as my fingers kept pressing) that another SA said it was fine for me to do. I managed to eke out another 2mLs before the original SA said sorry but I can keep my travel spray – of course I can, it’s mine. I did not have any drop fall anywhere obvious in the pristine boutique.

Hahaaaa! You rock! It’s funny that one of them had the temerity to give you permission to keep YOUR travel spray.

Funny story for you: I was chatting with a Dior SA about difficult notes. She said lavender was difficult for her. I asked how she felt about tuberose, as it’s a challenging note for me. She stated there “wasn’t enough rose” in tuberose for her. I clarified that I was talking about tuberose, not rose! She immediately began to praise Dior because “their roses are so well blended.” At that point, I backed away and booked on down the road. ?

SOTD is my dear old friend, Gucci EDP. It’s true that I haven’t been wearing it much lately – in part because it’s been summer, and in part because so many new discoveries since last fall/winter have distracted me. But it doesn’t truly qualify for the CP because (despite the recent inattention on my part) it’s less “I keep you around for sentimental reasons” and more “I never want to be without you”. Happy Friday Eve, everyone!

A past lover wore Old Spice and although he smelled wonderful in it I can not stand to smell it any more due to some very bad associations with it. Too bad.

My SOTD is not particularly on project but is Agonist Arctic Jade. I was puttering around in my little perfume cabinet and saw it and thought maybe it would be nice for today. It has an unusual combination of some fruits + jasmine + patchouli + vanilla and is an upbeat scent that seems fitting for a rather gray overcast day with rain in the forecast. I have a good one planned for tomorrow and the CP.

Jade is one of my favorite stones, the perfume version sounds lovely!

I can’t bear to smell Halston Z-14 anymore, same reason. I used to smell it in the wild from time to time. Thankfully it’s no longer popular. 😉

Old Spice on the other hand, is for me a fabulous carnation, just like Robin said. I have a spray decant, I swiped some from my dad’s decades old splash bottle. He rarely wore it when it was new, or any scent for that matter, and never wears it now. I should liberate it from it’s dark cupboard some day soon.

I’m really concerned about the maple tree in the front yard. The leaves are dropping all at once and the fallen ones don’t look healthy. I am hoping the ten days of smoke didn’t permanently harm the tree. It’s at least a hundred years old and I’d hate to lose it. I think I may call an arborist. Wearing Stash because I find it calming.

From a manufacturer sample sent to me by a loverly NSTer some time back.

Iris and vanilla+woods, I like it a lot, but mostly keep it around for the name. I like the way designer Roland Mouret’s last name is at the center of Une Amourette.

And the name means “a love affair”, so there’s that. 😀

SOTD = Jean Patou Chaldee, from the sample stash. This has a great, “just snuffed out candle” note to it in the top notes. At least, that is what I smell.

Thanks! I’ve been poking around the discounters to see what they have for various Patou offerings, keeping in mind that their bottles might not smell like my samples.

I’m the opposite. I can not stand snuffed out candle smell. This is why I don’t by candles. Except for birthdays, which I only use one.

Just for grins I checked out the notes list on Frangrantica. No snuffed out candles or beeswax listed, of course. So I think it’s just me.

I did not sleep a wink last night. Literally every hour and a half I would wake up.
Funny kid story- last Friday I let my daughter have my phone because she likes to do a beauty wish list at various beauty stores. After a bit, she hands me the phone and says “I did my first ever order mom” very proud like. Wth!? I checked my phone and she had placed an order with Amazon for a blond wig for 18 dollars. Apparently my card number was stored with them, which is now fixed. Thank goodness it was only 18 dollars and payday! The wig arrived and is actually pretty cute. You might wonder why a wig? Because a couple weeks ago, she cut her hair very short AGAIN. I decided it’s her hair, she can do what she wants.
Sotd is TM Miroir des Majesties because I have a soft spot for Mugler ?

Yay you for letting your daughter do what she wants with her hair. I remember that my mom cried when I came home from college with a pixie cut. No blonde wigs for me, though. ?
