Thursday scent of the day 9/10

Posted by Robin on 10 September 2020 293 Comments

It's Almost-Friday. Birthdays today: Elsa Schiaparelli, Karl Lagerfeld, José Feliciano, Colin Firth. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking cardamom points in Voyage d'Hermès.

Reminder: on 9/11, wear a perfume with cardamom, if you have one. (You can find several lists of fragrances with cardamom in the comments to the weekend poll.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from the Hermès Spring Summer 2020 campaign.

I’m in LADDM. PL67 reminded me that my mini is rapidly evaporating. Use it or lose it I guess. It fits today’s weather, another drizzly and gray day. Wishing I could send some of this rain to California and Oregon. I’ve seen pictures of those red skies on the internet and that is downright frightening. Stay safe all you people!!
This is nap inducing weather and I wanted to take one soooo badly yesterday afternoon, but resisted and played a game of scrabble with madtownteen instead. She kicked my butt of course, lol, maybe a challenge her to a rematch again this afternoon.

I use to live on SF so many of my friends are sending photos of how dark it was yesterday. I was shocked! Hoping the sky clears and rain will come

wait, the mini bottle from Tauer is evaporating?? Or is it a decant? I have the former but haven’t checked it recently. I had assumed that a MF mini is safe from the woes of evaporation…

Yes, the cobalt mini! I haven’t had mine long and have only used it a few times and it’s almost gone. When I dabbed this morning it feels thick and gooey. Better check yours!

Good that you are using your mini! The only drop I was able to rescue was also dark, thick and sticky. I don’t think I will get another mini from Tauer, unless I know I will wear it fast, which is not likely to happen.

    Le Lion ?
    Smokey sexy

I keep reading the reviews for the new Shalimar flanker and I am discouraged. One IG I follow , olfactory travels didn’t like it at all. Sono triste!

Moving today, alas, the movers are not here. This has been our life for the past few weeks. ?

Hi ltsg, I liked Le Lion, I tore into it yesterday when it arrived. It was all Shalimar on me for the 1st wear but I am taking H’s advice and doing Hajusuuri style sprays next time. I didn’t apply very much in case it was powerful. I found it not necessarily ‘sweeter’ but ‘brighter’ maybe, more refined somehow… does that make sense? Imho it has less leather but a beautiful dry down.
It was delicious. I really want to wear it and get comfortable. I need to get Coromandel to do a side by side comparison.

Rainy, humid day. My trip to the bakery to get some bread and pantries will be postponed until tomorrow.

Doggie is once again facing severe pancreatitis. No matter how strict I am with the diet, it keeps coming back, every time worse. Once again I hope he recovers from it. It is so tough!

    Happy Thursday, everyone! ?

This is what I said on IG: powdery, spicy, semi-dirty patchouli, leather, tonka, tobacco and yes, soapy/clean animalic. Overall, reminds me of a lower-pitched version of @papillon_artisan_perfumes Bengale Rouge and equally FB-worthy.

I bought a bottle but returned it for a bottle from the next batch as the bottle I have had a wonky sprayer.

I have a traveling Francesca Bianchi discovery set. Jessica has it now and I will ask her to mail it to you next and then I’ll let you know where to send it once you’re done. Sticky Fingers is not part of that set but I can remedy that.

In Lancome Santal Kardamon from a small decant today.

It’s like cardamom flavored dondurma aka Turkish ice cream. Resiny, creamy and dense, with some floral notes to poke through.

My first time trying dondurma was in a small grove in Turkey near Olympos beach, so the woody sandalwood and birch with vanilla feels just right.

Well, I jumped the gun. Lost track of days, so I’m in my Friday CP scent of 4711 Mandarine & Cardamom. I don’t love it enough to wear both days, so tomorrow will likely be in another sample I brought.

Getting taste of Wisconsin weather. Been very rainy and chilly last couple of days. Today continues that theme, although I think it’s supposed to be drier. Tomorrow will be sunny again as we start to get ready to leave. I’ve had perch, cheese curds, cherry strudel, Leinenkugel original, Swedish pancakes, meatballs…

Finally joining in the CP with Amouage Lyric today. It’s been forever since I’ve used that sample.

Feels like I’m up insanely early…but no, it’s just the old normal. Kid was so excited to be going to school that she was in full uniform and ready to go by 7:15 (this is very unusual). Of course, she’s only there 8:30-11:30 today.

Hope everyone directly to the south of me is doing okay, with all the fires. The pictures are pretty shocking — we get a lot of smoke here when there are big fires in the Okanagan and the sun almost disappears, but I’ve never seen it as dark as in the pictures from Oregon & the Bay Area yesterday.

It almost has a tobacco vibe for me but he professes it’s just the 3 notes. Meh…the nose smells what it smells and the mind interprets however it sees fit…as we see w/ varying interpretations of Le Lion. I will save my decant of that one for you if you don’t smell it first. 🙂

Have you tried others from Gallagher? I see on his FB page there appears to be a new gourmand perfume coming out this month sometime. I will probably order a sample set but wait until the new one comes out to try and get a sample of that one too.

I’m sure I have some other Gallagher samples but have not tried them. I will report back. I saw your email too.

I believe Gallagher’s new perfume is or will be the next American Perfumer perfume which I think is a great honor!

First my last try to like OJ Woman, still don’t like it, in the Souk it went a d was snapped up immediately.
Found out that Memoir Woman has a cardamom note I cannot smell, but it fits the CP.
My knee was painless today, so I gave my recumbent bike another try. Managed 11km without falling down, but still need more practice. But it’s fun to ride

I was thinking about getting the OJ Woman sample out today, but it’s buried somewhere in my drawer. I recall thinking it was nice, but I wasn’t driven to buy. I should try again.

Definitely can smell the cardamom in Lyric — rather enjoying it this morning!

Wpke up in vintage Shalimar and saving Lyric woman for Friday night. Yesterday, they up and changed the work uniform we have to wear. Instead of the polo shirt that the company provided us, they switched to a tshirt with the company logo. Shirts without a collar and an over the neck apron plain don’t work but only 2 more days until vacation. Wearing Une Rose Kandahar right now.

Today I’m wearing Miss Dior Originale EDT for its lovely galbunum opening (no cardamom, though). Why don’t I wear this more often? It’s gorgeous! My first bottle came from my mother when I was a teen. Without meaning to, she set me on a lifetime obsession with perfume.

Sahara Noir for me today, which I unfortunately love since it’s discontinued. Going to be a long day. Work then a red-eye to Alabama tonight. Coffee….lots and lots of coffee…

One of my husband’s good friends from the Air Force committed suicide Tuesday night. My husband’s best friend called and told him yesterday. They’re all pretty shaken up. So sad and tragic. J left work early yesterday, which he rarely does. He was doing his best to compartmentalize last night- as the military taught him to do so well- but was having a hard time doing so. I really hate it for them all. I didn’t know him as well as his other AF friends but they still talked frequently. Such a shame….

We actually have worse air today than yesterday, although it pretty much looks the same and not too unlike your view. Sometimes the air quality and what it looks like are not a perfect match – we ate dinner outside last night and it was dark too early due to the smoke, but we were in the moderate range. This morning I aired the house and then saw we were already in the unhealthy range…

    1) Smoky and the skies are a disquieting orange/grey. I have been coughing and tearing for the last couple of days.

    2) Am in The Organic Pharmacy Rose jasmine oil; after my workout, I think a spritz of Cap Neroli. This is the citrus & smoky Robin was after last week!

No clove, but now getting something similar to Chantilly/Emeraude. Maybe it’s the powder.

I loved the incense part of it! Unfortunately the earlier parts were way too full of leather for me. It does also have a lot of patchouli.

It is very patch and incense forward. It actually also has similarities to Calling All Angela if you take away the patch.

Had to do a Zoom meeting this morning, and boy is my video feed not kind – it accentuates that sort of translucent but bruised looking effect of chronic allergies on the tender skin under my eyes. I take enough medications so I don’t feel it so much, but the fall blooming season is the worst for me, and it shows on my face. I probably need to do a deep clean of my house, and replace the allergen-blocking pillow and mattress covers on my bed. Sigh. Wish my immune system didn’t view everything that grows hair or sheds pollen as a potential threat…
SOTD = DS & Durga Durga, my favorite tuberose bomb. This makes Do Son seem thin and scratchy in comparison, and quells my desire to keep searching for the perfect Tuberose, ( although I do remember the Amouage Tuberose Love, I think it is called, with fondness.) I guess that is my current perfumista goal, to locate a satisfying example of each of my favorite scent categories, such that I have no need to explore further for a while. Currently obsessing about a vanilla that is more vanilla that Shalimar Mexico…

Sometimes I’m glad my camera is so poor. While it doesn’t make me glow, it blurs everything…also, in your Zoom settings, there is an option called “touch up my appearance” (under video setting). I have gotten compliments from one friend that I looked good on Zoom, so maybe it does something!

I use an iPad for my Zoom calls and I position it about 20 inches away from me and prop it up so the camera is at eye level. I have the iPad in portrait mode. I also deliberately make my workspace darkish.

Jo Malone Oat and Cornflower. Smells like it could have cardamon. I totally forgot about the CP and also wanted to use this week to figure out my swap list – but then the smoke kind of nixed that. One side effect of the smoky skies is that it’s way cooler than the weather forecast predicted.

SOTD = Jul et Mad Fugit Amor

Creamy woody cardamom spicy sonI am with the CP. 8 sprays went poof in 4 hours … will have to decide what to wear next. It was good while it lasted! It is a 7mL travel spray for the Les White collection.

In other news, I need to address why my Zoom connection is not very sturdy / strong so this weekend, I will be replacing the modem and also plugging in a booster of some type. Because of where I work (kitchen), the phone jack and electrical outlet don’t jive (the one nearest the phone jack is used for the microwave and I am not letting the outlet be shared by another device). Wish me luck!

I will read the comments later!

I’m in Paestum Rose today. Thankfully, yesterday’s apocalpyse sky has modulated to a dingy, yellow overcast and there’s *some* light out! I’ve never seen anything like yesterday — it was like a solar eclipse that never went away, and crickets sang all afternoon (the birds did not). Feeling anguish on top of anguish for the firefighters injured on the Dolan fire and all the lost homes and lost lives across the west.

We heard nothing–no birds, no crickets, just eerie silence. But thanks for mentioning the crickets. I couldn’t figure out why the silence felt weird in the evening, since there is rarely birdsong in the evening anyway. Now I know.

No points for me, today or all week so far. SOTD is Carthusia 1681, which has coriander but not cardamom (not that they’re at all related, except for initial Cs). Mostly I love the iris and herbs in 1681 (coriander, thyme, rosemary, black pepper) – it’s very soothing.

Hello! Lush Cardamom and Coffee again for me. Mom and I had a quite successful grocery store run, and then I was ready for a cardamom-and-coffee-scented nap. lol. I still find grocery shopping exhausting, but in the Wegman’s near me, people are pretty good now about wearing their masks, so that helps.

I went to the local Walmart yesterday, and some folks there were not too good, especially the people who had their mouths somewhat covered, but their noses uncovered. I’ll give them a “you tried” point, but still not what it should be. The people wearing masks as chinstraps are giving the concept a far off the mark nod at best.

I had a long list of things I wanted to find at Walmart, and a number of the workers there asked me if they could help me find a specific thing, so that was nice. I also asked other workers about the location of this or that. I haven’t seen the “milk and honey” liquid soap I like for several months. This inspired me to do another C.O. Bigelow order when I got home. I like not having to interact with bunches of people in person. 🙂 But I’ve definitely gone down that C.O. Bigelow rabbit hole. lol. Big enabler pin to Robin. 🙂

Happy day all! The rain has ended but it’s still very brisk and cool here. Tried a spritz of Zoologists Civet earlier and I’m quite liking it. Well blended and complex in a vintage way but less voluminous more subtle in silage. I got it complimentary with a purchase of a travel spray Of Camel, which I’m wearing now. Both are very lovely in this kind of weather. I don’t think I have a perfume with cardamom, though I love the note. Maybe tomorrow I’ll participate in part with cardamom scented tea and a heated up Kardemummabullar for an afternoon treat. ?

I was part of Team Grouchy/Crabby/Cranky earlier today, but now I am just exhausted. I’ve been awake (more or less) since 4-something this morning. Why??? ??

On the plus side, someone from the bath and shower people came by this afternoon re: our leaking master bath. Turns out that the culprit was a faulty fitting in the shower assembly. I had to empty out my closet this morning, since there is an access panel in there. Another opening was cut into the closet wall for the repair. I had the option of either a drywall patch, or another access panel. I chose the access panel. Hopefully it won’t ever get used, but if it is needed, it is there. Someone will come back at a later date to fix the hole in the dining room ceiling.

SOTD = commando. Too tired for perfume today.

No money spent today on repairs… this was a warranty job.

Wearing one of my summer faves and one that showcases cardamom, Un Jardin Apres la Mousson.

I love that one — it’s my pick for tomorrow (Friday). It’s my favorite of all the Jardins. And I really like all of them.

I’m late checking in today. Had a lot of various things to do as I’m planning to have a friend over for dinner to test out my brand new Weber grill! We have decided we’re together in a Bubble. Unfortunately the afternoon was interrupted by a MAJOR big thunderstorm and torrential rain. I wish I could send it all to Colorado and the west coast! But in fact we kind of needed it too. It’s brightening up so perhaps we can still have our dinner. I was looking for my Memo samples because some of them have leather but couldn’t find them, and instead found April Aromatics samples. I’ve got Tempted Muse on the left arm and Precious Woods on the right. Both have some spice but not cardamom. Of these two I really prefer the woody one, very very nice. So far the only one I’ve purchased is Calling All Angels. The other BEST news is that my new MacBook Air came yesterday! I was really floundering around in every way without a computer for three weeks. The supply chain got interrupted by Covid factors and it took forever to get my new one. This is elegant and easy and fast with more memory, which I need.

I don’t know why I said some of them have LEATHER. I don’t much like that. I meant some of the Memo samples have CARDAMOM. Notably African Leather. Some sort of linguistic corruption going on here.

I’m starting to look around for a new laptop. My current one is starting to show its age, and act up occasionally.

When I loaded TurboTax for 2019, there was a warning that said if I did not upgrade to a certain OS, I will no longer be able to use Rhe 2020 Tax Year version. I thought I upgraded but I should try again. It’s a MacBook and maybe 5 years old?

My computer is a Dell, so I’m using Windows 10.

Not in cardamom yet, I’ll do that tomorrow with Un Jardin Apres La Mousson. Today I’m enjoyed Van Cleef & Arpels’ First, a very beautiful floral, also created by Jean-Claude Ellena.

    SotD = Eau des Merveilles

house twins with Robin! I’ll probably wear Voyage for Friday’s CP.

I would be happy to take that leather bag full of holes off of Hermes’ hands, especially if a large silk scarf came along to use as a lining.

Wore EdM to the beach, had a quick swim, now back home to do a quick fly by and say how much I missed reading everyone’s comments this week. It was a busy one. See you tomorrow. 🙂

I really like that bag, and I don’t usually like Hermes bags.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black, the first sprays of a new bottle, which I read can be kind of “off”. Is there any truth to that? Right of the bat I got loud floral and cheap vanilla vodka but it dried down to a nice Sandalwood soon enough. It didn’t seem like it lasted but I did change my clothes and maybe I just went nose blind?

I also sample Lancome La Vie est Belle L’Eclat. I definitely picked up on all the floral and maybe later a bit of citrus in the mix but not sure if imagined it. Rounded out with vanilla sandalwood but on the Lancome it smelled more cleaning product/air freshener.

I wonder how much my interpretation of a fragrance has to do with the branding/packing and what I would think of the scents alone.
