Tuesday scent of the day 9/8

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2020 296 Comments

It's Tuesday! Also, happy Star Trek Day and happy International Literacy Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing 4160Tuesdays The Buddhawood Box. Tea at the moment is Yunnan Golden Monkey Organic from Upton.

Reminder: on 9/11, wear a perfume with cardamom, if you have one. (You can find several lists of fragrances with cardamom in the comments to the weekend poll.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Think Geek used to sell the TNG Captain's Tea Set, but you've long since missed your chance to own one.

Sampling Sirocco from Solstice Scents for the project. I kind of like it’s combination of dirt and breezy warm spices

That sounds really nice. I need to do up a list of what I have with cardamom.

This tea set is cool, and I am not even a Star Trek fan!

    My contributions to the CP:

Monday: Versace Versense. I cannot really smell cardamom in it, but there is a fresh, green, spicy note. It might be it.
Today: Teo Cabanel Oha on my left arm and Amouage Beloved on my right arm. They layer very well.

Two changes to the cardamom list I posted on Friday. First, I either lost or finished my sample of Jo Malone White Moss&Snowdrop, so it is off the list. On the other hand, I found that I still have a sample of Jul et Mad Fugit Amor, and it is a perfume with a strong cardamom note.

      How do you like Oha?

I like it but do not love it. It is a striking spicy rose, which reminds me of rose chypres – beautiful, but hard to wear. I find smoother, balsamic spicy roses more ‘comfortable’. But I do want to finish the sample.

I have similar feelings about Oha. Very interestingly spicy and I enjoy the dry down. Will use up the sample but not purchase.

A “striking spicy rose” sounds right up my alley. Putting Oha on my “To Sample” list!

I also read a review on IG that I was not so pleased about:
.. “In general, after the first use, I would say this fragrance is very pleasant, kind of a “younger” version of Shalimar”
I would something that smells “older” lol!

I had a bit of it when I was pregnant with my last one. I find that gentle yoga and a bath before bed helps. My body always has this sort of reaction to stress, no matter how much I meditate.

We figured out the school. We decided to just keep my oldest in Montessori for now. She and my youngest won’t go everyday for now but I have two days when they are both there so I can have a break! Next year we will enroll in public school again and see how it goes..

Hello everyone!! Recently while browsing online, I had a couple of SaksFifth Avenue ads with some GO -RGEOUS!! large Guerlain Bee bottles with perfumes in them. They are like around $280 per bottle. I started to daydream immediately. So I have decided to re-visit the Aqua Allegoria once again and order something. I used to collect Aqua Allegorias years ago and loved my collection. So far I have made a blind purchase… I settled for Teazzurra. I was going to get Nerolia Blanca at first (because I could NEVER go wrong with Orange blossom or Neroli)… But after reading descriptions, and especially when someone mentioned that Teazzurra is so long lasting for an Aqua Allegoria… I decided on that one. It might not be the large, bee-incrusted Les perissienne bottle but I love the blue color of Teazzurra and I have really high hopes since tea is my number one favorite anyways. Thanks for reading!! P.S. I just can’t wait for my package with Teazzurra to arrive…

My bad, for some reason in my head I always thought that aniseed perfumes are usually accompanied by cardamom as well:) I have to get a cardamom essential oil or something so I can be more familiar with it. Even though I am SURE I smelled it before… Loving perfume I smelled so many I can’t even remember correctly now!!

It’s been a busy few days! Got my daughter all moved in and set up in her college apartment and spent a lovely couple of nights in an Airbnb. We had the most perfect weather! I didn’t want to come home.
I’m off today and my interview is this afternoon.? I think I am well prepared. Ironically my daughter has a phone interview today too so I’m going to call her later and we can debrief together, lol. Headed out for a mani so my hands look nice.

Happy Tuesday all. I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Our beach was packed! Lots of people watching to be had.
My SOTD is Halston Catalyst, it’s such a perfect honeyed (BIG) white floral. This is typical of the perfumes from the 80’s and 90’s. I can’t help but love the creamy gardenia, tuberose, orange blossom, narcissus. I’m hearing the end of my bottle and expect to ‘thunk’ it very soon.

Enjoying some Cuban Coffee but nothing else. I’m recuperating after a weekend of overeating. I made Cuban pork roast, black beans, fried plantains and rice. I’m still in a food coma. If anyone wants the recipe for the roast, please let me know!

Catalyst is one of those scents I never thought I’d like. I was more of a Fendi, Opium, and Coco kind of gal. Some scents from the good old days weren’t as enjoyable when I revisited them, such as Wings, Giorgio, and Giorgio Red. But this is such a stunner.
I think we all have a running perfume cart we add to. I’m trying not to click the ‘buy now’ button!

        Here it is. 😀
        Cuban Pork Roast
        15 lb bone-in pork butt
        1/3 cup of olive oil
Cloves from 1 head of garlic, peeled (more if you like)
1/3 cup of sour orange juice
¼ cup of fresh squeezed orange juice (1 orange)
¾ cup of fresh squeezed lime juice ( about 8 limes)
        ½ teaspoon of cumin
        ½ teaspoon of black pepper
        3-4 Tablespoons of salt
2 teaspoons of fresh oregano leaves
¼ cup of fresh packed cilantro leaves

        1. Combine all of the ingredients (except pork) in a food processor and blend until completely liquified.
        2. Line a roasting pan with foil and place the pork, skin side down on the pan.
        3. Using a meat injector, inject all of the marinade into the meat, going into as many spots as you can. If you feel like you can’t inject more marinade, rub some onto the outside of the pork roast. **If you want to use left-over marinade as a dipping sauce, be sure to cook it thoroughly; it’s cross-contaminated with raw pork juice from dipping the needle into the roast.
        4. Cover the pork with foil as tightly as you can to create a seal and refrigerate overnight or at least 6 hours.
        5. Prior to roasting, take the roast out of the refrigerator to allow it to come to room temperature, approximately ½ hr to 1 hour. If you put a cold roast in the oven, it will drop the temperature and your roast will take longer to cook.
        6. Place the roasting rack on the lower/middle level of the oven to allow enough room for the roast and preheat your oven to 275. When your roast has come to room temperature, place the roast in the oven, and roast at 275 for 6-7 hours, depending if your oven runs warm or on the cool side.
        7. After cooking time is completed, uncover the pork, your roast should be falling off the bone.
        8. If your roast needs browning on top, set the oven to broil and roast for 3-6 minutes or until it’s a nice golden brown color.
        9. Remove roast from oven and let sit for 20 minutes before shredding.

My 7 year-old started back w/ online school last week w/ a soft opening of sorts ? but this week begins the schedule in earnest w/ on/off Zooms and different subjects/groups etc. from 8 am to about 12 noon each day. ? The funny part is I am supposed to be working during this time too…oy vey. Sometimes you can’t keep all the balls in the air so you just must let some drop.

I tried BDK Rouge Smoking over the weekend and really loved it…makes me want to sample more from this house. Have to compare it to TF Lost Cherry which I just bought the travel spray of to see if they are similar.

I don’t understand how we are supposed to work and do the online school. For most of the week I’m not available for the time slot, so my daughter and I just do the homework when I get out of work. We don’t participate in the zoom classroom.
Also.. is the Rouge Smoking really smokey? Or is it tobacco?

I got cherry and tobacco even though tobacco isn’t listed as a note many on Fragrantica also say they get tobacco. Quite good. Have you tried TF Lost Cherry? I first tried that one a week or so ago and got cherry, tobacco, almond and spices. I am going to do a side by side of these two later this week to see how similar/different they are.

Yeah, my sister in the States just had to give up and send her kids to their afterschool care full time, since they’re now doing full day sessions where they’ll oversee kids in their schoolwork. With two kids at home, one now in middle school & with six different teachers, and both parents working, there was just no way to handle school on their own. Of course, it costs a fortune, so she’s only doing it 3 days a week.

I don’t know what we’re going to do if they close the schools here again, as I expect they will probably have to after the kids start back in-person this week. We don’t have after-school care any longer, so no priority to get into anything extended if they do it. Very curious to see what Dr. Bonnie’s report (our provincial health officer) is going to be this afternoon on numbers, coming out of the long weekend / vacation season.

Some new Memo fragrances out…they always have beautiful bottles and Sintra appears to be a gourmand judging by the somewhat over the top ad copy and notes. 🙂 The glow of absolute vanilla? Yes, please.

“Sintra evokes memories – a composition that features orange blossom, vanilla, marshmallow and musk as key notes. A sweet spiral.”

“Around the corner from a palace, an unexpected rainforest.
The heart of an absolute orange. The lace of an azulejo, the spiral of a hidden staircase, petitgrain after petitgrain after petitgrain… Welcoming visions everywhere. The glow of an absolute vanilla. A fountain whispers, a turret smiles, a garden greets you with its hands. A castle does a peacock wheel. A soft and colorful walk, a pause soon and the surprise of a sweet marshmallow confectionery. The present of childhood. Musks. Getting lost.””

    Love the tea set!

Diving right back in at work this morning — early meetings for the next few days. Seems to be an occupational hazard of West Coast working — everyone forgets or doesn’t care that we’re 3 hours behind. Meanwhile my kid is trying to beg for full days of screen time, since she’s not in school until a half day on Thursday, and we’re both working. (She’s not getting it, but she’ll almost certainly get more than she should.)

Wearing La Curie Ossuary today, so not a part of the CP (need to check some lists to see what cardamom I own, other than the actual spice). My spouse replaced the soap with Tauer Solar Engineer, so I needed something that would work with that since it is quite lasting.

No CP, but tried Olympea today at the drugstore. Now wearing Coromandel, because it gets cooler.
I tried to bike on my recumbent for the first time yesterday and managed to drive straight. Sadly I tried to do a big I-turn and fell on the street. Was not bad at first, but in the night my knee started hurting and swelling, so I went to a surgeon for inspection. Seems I ruptured my meniscus again on the same knee I had a partial meniscus resection some years ago.
I will stay at home for some days and let the knee rest, at least it does not hurt much anymore. The good is, that I can recline on the sofa and watch Netflix!!!

Rose Ikebana today just because. It’s pretty and I thunked the sample. I enjoy it but not as much as several of the other Hermessence offerings. I love Osmanthe Yunnan and Cedre Sambac.

Drove the 12 hours home from NM yesterday. A bit sad to come back to such smokey conditions and air quality. Also I’m exhausted but it was worth it to see friends and family. Three days of work then off to Alabama for my son’s 21st bday. Gonna need a serious rest and to stay at home after this weekend.

Smoke smoke smoke smoke smoke. The sun is a gorgeous and horrifyingly end-times-esque red. This on the back of a >100F weekend. So. Things are going well.

What a lovely teapot! My fiance would have loved it. Probably best that it’s no longer available, as we already have approximately three tea sets and use them each maybe five times per year.

I’m in AS Sunday. I keep wearing this recently. I need that milky, creamy comfort in these rotten times.

There’s a fire in eastern SD county now too. 🙁 The weather really does feel like end of days w/ the fires and heat. Big hugs to you.

I haven’t tried AS Sunday yet…would you say it’s a gourmand? Appears to be in that territory looking at the notes on Fragrantica…

Oh no 🙁 it sounds like the entire coast is on fire. How horrible.

I can see why other people would call Sunday a gourmand. It is very milky-matcha-raw rice-y. But it doesn’t FEEL gourmand. Does that make any sense? I never feel like it’s something I could eat or chew on, like other gourmands do. This one is just a security blanket. (But then, I find food to provide me with greater comfort than almost anything else.)

I’m so sorry about your asthma 🙁 mine, too. I tried to work out this morning without taking a puff of my inhaler first and started choking and wheezing desperately until I got myself some sweet, sweet bronchodilator. I hope they are able to contain all these horrible fires soon.

I feel for the West Coast folks who are living with the effects of those big fires. I can’t really think of advice — “hang in there” is my thought, and keep the albuterol inhalers at hand. I also hope they’ll be able to contain the fires soon, and the weather cools down for you.

I cut back on news-watching again, but I have been hearing about the natural disasters of fire in one part of the country, and the flooding along with the hurricanes in the South a little while ago. With all that’s been going on, I’m kind of expecting a rain of locusts or toads or whatever next. (But I hope not!) I’m not particularly religious, but it does feel like sort of Biblical effects. Let me not even get into things going on more due to the acts of man rather than nature, because I cut back on the news to avoid what I could of that.

      Anyway, take care.

    Tuesday!

    1) Came back to Portland yesterday to winds and nasty, yucky smoke & haze! It smelled of forest fires all over, and soot blew in all over! The winds continue today- the haze and smoke has mostly been blown away but now there are downed trees and branches, fruit on the ground everywhere, even my tomato plants had damage!
Other than that, my much needed rural break was really good and much needed. Smoothies and roasting myself in the sun was much needed and appreciated.

    2) SOTD is Red Apple, Peony and Cashmere Woods from Beauty Pie- very pretty, very casual, slightly too sweet, perfect for a very windy day!

SOTD = Scents of Wood L’Ame du Bois Scent #2

I mentioned getting a complimentary discovery set and I wore my favorite of the three – Scent #2 – with its woodsy, sweet myrrh, lightly boozy and amplified amber ?

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4frorhAME/?igshid=12l77mgd8vkbn

I posted pics and wrote up what I thought of the set here:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CE2wEeZhJug/?igshid=1rig9g34b21gp

It is due to launch on September 22nd. Fabrice mentioned the model being subscription but I am hoping there will be opportunity for individual bottle purchase because I need a bottle of this!

In other news, the days are definitely getting shorter and I will need to adjust my walking schedule but I am limited by it not being before work and It is also not practical to go during the day … I’ll have to have a think about this!

Show of hands, if you had to pick being off on a Friday (plus the weekend) or being off the weekend plus Monday, which one do you prefer and why? I like being off on Mondays better because it feels like a longer extension of the weekend.

For those balancing work and monitoring school, best of everything. I read an article in the NY Times, and I may link to it, that made a comment that it is the responsibility of a company to help parents parent. I don’t agree with this as binary but Inam coming from the perspective of not needing it so I am also curious what you all think. Nothing political please as this is more philosophical and to a large extent economic, but is it an employer’s responsibility?

I’m not a parent but will weigh in. I think it’s a social responsibility not just a personal or employer responsibility. It benefits everyone in the society to have children well supported and well cared for. Finland is a good example.

I don’t think it’s my companys responsibility to do anything but pay me for work well done. I do strive to be a valuable employee ( even though, my job is pretty much bottom level work) at my last job, when I was having childcare issues, my employer did work with me, but it was because they wanted to keep me. Also, I prefer to keep my work life and home life seperate, if I can help it. It’s nice if employers want to help, but it shouldn’t be expected.

I worked a 4/10 schedule (four days a week, 10 hour days) for twenty years and always had Mondays off. It worked out great because when Monday was a holiday, the holiday was “banked” because Mondays were my day off. When the time came to retire, I had 20 years of Monday holidays that were worth a tidy pile of cash. I also liked it because lots of people have Fridays off or leave early on Fridays, so the stores and roads are less crowded on Mondays.

On the one hand, I prefer having Fridays off because you get to start your weekends earlier! On the other, along the lines of what foxbins said, because many other people take off on Fridays, having a Monday off means being able to access things at a less busy time 🙂

As for the employer responsibility question: As Calypso said, it should be a social responsibility. For us, though, it isn’t. As such, perhaps it’s not the employer’s responsibility to help with childcare, but it would be the decent thing to do. It would also be the smart thing to do in order to attract the best talent, since many people might turn away from companies that don’t help out with childcare.

Did you make the owls and mouse?? Either way, they are SO CUTE!

Noting down what I would consider a Monday off preference.

On company “provided” childcare, I’m thinking more along the lines of access to childcare. And of course, the next question is how do you make it “fair” across the board as it’s not something that is not arranged everywhere.

As to the felted things, I wish I have the talent!

Not a parent either, but will offer my 2 cents. I prefer my Mondays off because, a) it’s generally the least busy day of the week in terms of retail and such, so, less crowds (even before covid); b) my weekends are almost always spent at work so it’s nice to have a day to chill out and recover from being on my feet all weekend; c) Mondays are also just plain quieter for some reason and more relaxing. Hope that helps!

Oregon is sandwiched between Washington and California, so it gets their fire smoke, plus we have our own fires on the eastern side of the state. Last night it was so smoky the light was brownish-yellow. Gusty winds gave me a power outage last night but it’s back on now.

If I have a cardamom fragrance I am unaware of it, so I’ll be looking to you all for something I can copy. For now, I’m wearing Kilian Woman in Gold.

I could do a whole week of cardamom perfumes, but I’m going to wear my new purchase, Jean Patou’s Chaldée from the 2013 heritage collection. I read a review on The Alembicated Genie, read some more reviews and someone compared it to Narcisse Noir. Then I found it cheap at a New Zealand online discounter, and I broke my absolute rule to never blind-buy.
I’m pleased to report that I like it, and it does remind me of Narcisse Noir.

I’m in Le Lion this afternoon, from the split hosted by hajusuuri. I was comparing a couple of fig fragrances this morning, so I spritzed a tiny bit on my upper arm and started dusting the house. This is gorgeous! Lightly spiced amber and vanilla, with a soft leather showing up after an hour. It’s cuddly and comforting. Reminds me of a softer, gentler Coromandel at first, some Shalimar, then a warmer Cuir de Russie. Santa, we need to talk!

I’m not sure if hajusuuri filled the split. It can’t hurt to ask. Pretty sure she bought a big bottle.

I received my Le Lion decant this afternoon and I’ve been wearing it for about an hour now.
Just read Nancy’s mini review above and I agree with everything she said.
It’s got the Coromandel vibe and a bit of the Shalimar vibe with this gorgeous soft expensive leather note throughout. To me it’s definitely closer to Coromandel than to Shalimar (which is good news since I adore the former and dislike the later). It’s cuddly and elegant at the same time. To sum it up, it’s Coromandel with vanilla and leather and I love it. Thank you H!

SOTD is a new shirt from my favorite lady’s dress shop in Austin, Sue Patrick. I shopped there a lot when we lived there and started buying a few things there again when we visited last summer. She is about 80 years old and still goes into the store, though her son really manages it now. She is a dear lady who recognized me right off the bat last summer, even though I hadn’t been there for 18 years. We chatted like no time at all had passed. There is a certain fragrance that all the clothes from there that I just love. Can’t bear to wear perfume with her clothes until after I’ve washed them!

I once bought a fall jacket from a country store that sold all kinds of lovely smelling things. It retained that smell for weeks after I took it home.

Sending lots of rainy thoughts to everyone on the west side of North America with these dreadful fires…

CP points for Penhaligon’s Changing Constance, which has cardamom and pimiento in its opening before morphing into a cozy caramel vanilla with cashmeran.

I wasn’t feeling up for a big culinary challenge this week, so I convinced Mr. Teebear (and myself I suppose) that a pot of America’s Test Kitchen chili would go great with Kraft Dinner. That’s Kraft macaroni and cheese for you Americans.

I’ll no doubt feel like I’m about 8 years old when we sit down to eat this conceptual masterpiece of a dinner idea, but you know what, you only live once!

And if you have any of either left, put it between two flour tortillas, drop it in a heated pan and call it a quesadilla.

Laundry and kitty snuggles on the docket for today. The weather is still nice, but not the spectacular stuff we had over the long weekend. It could be much worse, though… it’s snowing in Colorado right now, and my brother is out working in it tonight.

SOTD = back in Fat Electrician.

Such weird weather going on in Colorado, from 70s down to snow temps and snow in < 24 hours, if I am not mistaken. We’re looking at 2 weather disturbances in these here parts – ugh!

Snow in September is not that weird for long term residents of the Centennial State. But that temperature drop was one for the record books… it was 101 over the holiday weekend, in the 90’s yesterday, and dropped almost 60 degrees.

Some of the mountains down by New Mexico are looking to get between 18 and 24 inches of snow out of this storm.

Hi everyone, it’s a beautiful day here right now, and will be out for my walk in a little bit. Feeling sympathy and sending good vibes/hopes/prayers for those on here that are on the West Coast right now, I did not realize it was that bad out there (my policy of avoiding the news as much as possible sometimes backfires). SOTD is Tocca Gia; I like the rose note that is hidden in the composition, not too strong but just enough to make it really pretty.

It’s warmer and more humid today, but I really did get out there and enjoy the nicer weather of the weekend. Scent is 4711 Acqua Colonia Mandarine & Cardamom. I swapped away a bottle that was at least half full, and I still have a couple of decants of it that are ~30 ml each. lol. Pixel gave me the inspiration for sharing 4711 AC scents, from back when she got the big bottles and split them. 🙂

It’s a refreshing scent, so it’s good for today. I spritzed on a little after a cool shower. 😀

I remember that Robin commented a few months ago about how we had two days of spring, and then it was summer. That’s typical of this part of Pennsylvania. Soon we’ll have a few days of autumn, then it will be winter, and we’ll be going for cozy perfumes and cozy clothes. It will be time to get my hoodies back out of the storage box. 🙂

Usually my mood has an upswing when the weather gets cooler, like in the 60s and low 70s. But then I get tired of really cold weather very quickly. I guess I’m hard to please that way. lol.

Have a good rest of the week! 😀

The book I’m reading today is Bulbs for All Seasons. The author is based in Montreal. The book was written in French and then translated into English for the U.S. market. Some of the translation is a little odd. One sort of crocus is named ‘Jeanne d’Arc,’ and it was translated into ‘Joan of Arc.’ That’s an example of a name that would have been correct kept in the original French. I guess some flower bulb names are confusing, though, given that some are in French, some in German, some in Dutch, etc.

Today my Poet’s Jasmine Jasminium grandiflorum is blooming. Boy, that smells really good! And I’m still enjoying the scent of a heliotrope, too.

      Good night! 🙂

Just arrived home after a 11 hour work day which is why I haven’t been posting much lately. SOTD was Beige. It’s sort of perfect for the changeable weather we’ve been having lately. I also recieved a sample of Santal Du Pacifique by Perris Monte Carlo today. So far, it’s a thumbs up. Time to make some dinner. I’ll try to read comments later if I can stay awake. ?

Sprayed myself with Iris 39 tonight. I will have to check for CP compliant scents in my stash.
