Thursday scent of the day 8/27

Posted by Robin on 27 August 2020 276 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Pots de Creme Day. Birthdays today: Man Ray, Lester Young,* Ira Levin, William Least Heat-Moon. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Kelly Caleche, from my standard community project...wear something Jean Claude Ellena made for Hermès.

Reminder: 8/28 will be Dealer's Choice, edition 4...propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

*Billie Holiday singing Fine and Mellow. The first sax is Ben Webster, the second is Lester Young.

Just checking in, since I have not posted in a while. I hope everyone is fine.
I do not have any CP ideas. Wearing SL Vierge de Fer. While Baiser Vole and SL Un Lys remain my favorite lilies, this one is nice too. Soft, musky, sheer.

I don’t really get on with Jean Claude Ellenas perfumes, as they seem very weak on my skin.
My friend gave me a lovely handmade Fig & goats milk soap as a gift for pet sitting while she visited Bath, and a wonderful wood block print card of The Royal Crescent now on my mantel piece, I’m tempted to read some Jane Austin this afternoon, rather than make a dent in the to do list..
SOTD: Philosykos, to compliment the soap.

I think of JCE’s style as very transparent–like whisps of fragrance rather than a heavy fog. Or, going with a music metaphor, he’s the fragrance-opposite of Spector’s “wall of sound.” (Which would be something maximalist, like 80’s Youth Dew.) So, maybe his scents are just a few voices harmonizing a cappella?

What a lovely analogy, I’m sure I will try some again, it’s a few years since I’ve tried any, my perceptions may be different these days.

I should say, it’s not an aesthetic that wows me, either. I recognize that they are beautifully done, but I only own one JCE scent, L’eau d’Hiver, and I always wish it was a bit louder whenever I wear it.

SotD in my I-didn’t-expect-to-like-this CP: Akro Dark.

This chocolate-focused scent won my heart despite having not one but two notes I wasn’t sure of initially: hazelnut, and patchouli (the latter isn’t listed in the notes but is definitely there).

I am sensitive to nut/seed oils going off and the worst culprits for me are hazelnut and sunflower seeds. I avoid Toblerone, Ferrero Rocher etc. typically, as unless they’re very fresh they taste horribly stale to me. So I wasn’t sure how I’d react to hazelnut as a perfume note, but it’s lovely. So there’s that.

Patchouli I’m just not always the biggest fan of, and truthfully sometimes this perfume is too much for me because of it. I have to be in the mood to wear Dark, it’s not an everyday pick. But when I am in the mood, I can appreciate the patchouli supporting and extending the chocolate note. It’s a very linear and full perfume, not quite sweet enough to be gourmand, and I appreciate it a lot when I’m in the mood!

My sweet kitty Kate is at the vet’s office for her dental surgery today (two teeth need to go due to resorption), so I am a ball of anxious nerves despite knowing they’ll take the very best care of her. I just want her back home safe and sound!!!

Malt is very unique and distinctive, Night is a dirty rose with a lot of cumin (I loved it), Smoke is a leathery, smoky fragrance, and Haze is a crisp and minty fragrance.

Interesting scent. Is it in any way similar to Angel Muse (if you tried it)?

And best of luck to your kitty. I think she will feel better once she recovers after the suregry.

I only tried Angel Muse once, but from what I remember it is a lot sweeter than Dark, I think Dark is probably closest to Lutens Borneo.

Thank you, this helps. I tried Borneo a long time ago, and as far I remember it is not sweet at all, while AM is definitely as sweet as you can expect from an Angel offspring.

I would say more dissimilar than alike. Any sweetness in Dark comes from a bit of booziness and quite possibly some benzoin (the listed notes are very much incomplete), but to me it’s quite a dry and spicy gourmand overall.

If you’ve ever tried Lush’s I’m Home, I’d say it’s like a more woody and darker chocolate version of that.

    Hey guys:)

Just an update on the Iris Torrefie split. So far, we have the following ppl signed up for 5 mls:

    Lovestosmellgood
    Nancyleandros
    Janice
    Catanosmia
    She-ra
    MossyBerry

And signed up for 10 mls is:

    meredifay

That leaves 15-20 mls left to split off before I would go ahead and place the order. So, if you haven’t done a dibs and want to, let me know. Again, 5 mls is $22 and 10 mls is $44. Payment would be F&F PayPal. Do a dibs here with how much you want then email me at kalliela11 at the hot male.

That being said, I spoke with Theodore again yesterday from the Guerlain boutique. He said he will contact me as soon as the new bottles come in..which may not be until mid September:(. But will let me know if they are in sooner. We could go ahead and do a presale or wait until the bottles comes in…I am thinking the later, to wait. Again, they had the perfume in stock, approximately 18 bottles, but sold through..cause he said this was an anticipated release.

So there ya have it lol. Thanks for your emails and requests to join:).

Sotd..I am thinkin Youth Dew powder:).

SOTD is SmellBent Smoked Ambergris. It could go Boudoir to Boardroom, but I prefer it when I’m horizontal, in bed, heading to the land of nod. ?

Still disgustingly hot here, and will be until I leave. When I lived here 20 years ago, I didn’t have A/C and didn’t miss it. Every night, it cooled down significantly. We had some pretty warm days, but nothing like this unending 85+ heat and 100% humidity. It’s like Florida, without the palm trees. Ugh!

I need to get motivated to pack up this van! Happy for all the people who didn’t have any fallout from Laura, but sad for those who did. Looks like there is extensive damage…

Hi all – I’ve been absent for a few days due to eye issues … but good ones. Had cataract replacement surgery on one eye on Tuesday, and I Cannot Believe how bad my vision had become. I also can’t believe how fast a surgery that is, and how quickly one can open one’s eye and see clearly (it was about 5 hours for me). Wow. Other eye happening next Tuesday.

Anyway, my personal CP has been Things That Are Calming, for obvious reasons. 🙂 Monday was Italian Leather, Tuesday was Kyoto, yesterday was Eau de Hadrien, and today is the lovely Dryad. Question for French-speaking NSTers – why is it not Eau d’Hadrien? Just curious.

Ha, mostly it helps that I am forgetful …phacoemulsification sounds awful anyway. It’s ok, I really will probably need it some day and will be grateful to have it when I do.

I’ve only needed glasses the last couple years, and I have already investigated vision correction. Probably doesn’t make sense, in my case, but I still don’t think of myself as “a person who wears glasses.” I’ve forgotten to put them on several times over the last few years, until the ensuing headache reminds me. ?

Glasses are annoying, to be sure. I was able to get by with contact lenses for many years, but once I started approaching the age of “ancient” my eyes wouldn’t tolerate them well anymore. I am only now getting to the point where I look “normal” to myself while wearing glasses … so, Marjorie Rose, it may take a few more years for you. 🙂

It actually is Eau d’Hadrien on the French website. Which makes sense as it is also Les mémoires d’Hadrien and that book was written by the first woman writer to become a member of the Académie Française.

Good, my eyes are not what they used to be either and even with my new glasses I struggle reading small print.
I was kind of sure, but I checked to be really certain.

I’m wearing the lovely Un Cœur en Mai. I’m beginning to fall asleep in the afternoon. A sure sign of someone who has done a lot. On the plus side I’ve finished most of the organising, so I can relax just a little bit. And I can put things in boxes with my eyes closed.

You smell fabulous! Un Coeur en Mai isn’t edgy but how many perfumes are hyacinth dominant? I will have to dig out my bottle and wear it

It is such a graceful perfume. I do get more hyacinth from Grand Amour though. But this one is a lot greener.
Patricia de Nicolaï does not really do edgy perfumes, what she does do is create perfumes that I actually wear, a lot.

Yes! Her bottles have a way of creeping into my collection after I get a sample and find myself wearing it repeatedly. (It helps that her own small bottles are relatively affordable, for sure.) I should try Un Coeur in Mai…I like my Tauerville Hyacinth and a Mechanic…but then I see she did this one for MDCI and that takes it well out of reach. 🙂

Why don’t you get the MDCI sample set. It’s not that expensive and the samples are a very good size (10 ml). The full bottles are expensive but I enjoy them a whole lot. The ones I would still like to get at some point are Rivage des Syrtes and Invasion Barbare.

MDCI used to and maybe still does offer a 3 sample set of the 10mLs for “free” when you buy a full bottle (does not have to be the one with the busts).

Wearing Tauer L’Eau and having a very unhealthy breakfast: a cup of strawberry cheesecake gelato and a toast with peanut butter and jelly ?. Late lunch and dinner only a salad and plenty of fluids for the rest of the day.
It will be another busy day. Looking forward to the weekend!

Just unearthed the Extrait from the Closet of Shame. As I move things around in the Closet, I think “boy, I really have too much perfume…” then by the time I am back downstairs I think “how am I going to get more perfume…?” True story. I am kind of like a goldfish when it comes to perfume I guess.

I bought the Extrait sealed on Ebay for around $50. There’s a WDW/Epcot price sticker on it showing $115 for .25 oz/7.5 ml and it appears to have been sold via the Guerlain store in France at Epcot. The batch code is 6F02 which puts it at produced in 2006. I used a pipette and put a couple ml in a glass atomizer. The juice is a beautiful light amber w/ no cloudiness.

It smells gorgeous. Not as sharp as the EDT. More rounded and floral. Lots of oomph and sillage. Makes me wonder if I should seek out a bottle of older EDP.

After yesterday’s scrubber (I did actually scrub it off and replaced with Atelier Pacific Lime), I’m in Eau d’Hadrien from a sample I got at Sniffapalooza. Much better and summer appropriate.

So sorry for those impacted by Laura. A big challenge to house the homeless, given COVID.

Made a Fall purchase yesterday… Didn’t need it, but I was quite taken by a faux suede short, collarless jacket at Uniqlo. It was partly the color…a nice, almost grayish taupe.

Insipired by lillyjo’s week of tuberose perfumes (I’m not really doing the CP), today I’m in Tauer Tuberose Sotto la Luna.

Thanks, all, for the well wishes for my anniversary yesterday. We had a nice dinner out, though one with way more discussion of the “Keeper of the Lost Cities” book series for kids than I’d ever have predicted. 🙂

Today I’m in #4 of 9 full mornings of mindnumbing training that’s so high level that it’s not really useful for our project. Sigh.

But I’m getting my hair cut this afternoon and very excited about that. I haven’t wanted to go in during COVID, but I look dreadful with long hair and hate it. I just can’t pull it back any longer! On top of that, I was planning to find a new salon, pre-COVID, which became harder post-COVID. I’ve found a new stylist, so we’ll see how that goes.

Thinking of everyone who’s evacuated, for weather or fires, and hoping you’re all okay!

I can discuss Harry Potter with her for hours, but she’s moved on (sadly). Trying to push her towards His Dark Materials or Lord of the Rings, both of which I can happily discuss, but sadly, she’s now at the age where she doesn’t want to take suggestions from Mom. 😀 I haven’t felt driven to dive into “Keeper of the Lost Cities” from what she’s told me so far, so it was a very one-sided conversation!

The last two series I read as an adult, but I was addicted to LOTR starting in middle school after reading The Hobbit in 6th grade. Depending on the age of your child, here are some other options: A Wrinkle in Time (it’s Book 1 of 5 and the most famous), by Madeline L’Engle; The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. LeGuin; The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry; The Merlin Trilogy, by Mary Stewart.

No SOTD, yet; still waking up with coffee and trying to plan my day. Thank you everyone for the kind words and virtual snuggles yesterday! It was really touching and means a lot to me!

On my drive down to the coast, I stopped at a small farm stand. I bought 10 lbs of fresh peaches and several pounds of very ripe, local prune plums. I might live off of fruit today. 😀

I have work to do, but I’m trying to reorganize my day so I don’t have to drive to school. I stayed up late talking to Mom, and I don’t want to have to fake energy for potential coworkers. Maybe I can finagle my responsibilities right so I can do that work tomorrow when I’m better rested. ??There’s certainly plenty I can do from home.

I loved the smell of Coppertone back in the day. Nowadays, though, I want my sunscreen to be unscented, or at least not compete with my perfume.

Today, a generous wearing of Amber Oud from my new bottle. This stuff wears like iron on my skin – multiple vigorous hand washings and doses of hand sanitizer later, and it still smells loverly…. too hot outside here in Michigan – we had the red sky in morning, sailors taking warning sunrise, which I am sure is the moist air pumped north out of the Gulf, stay safe, everyone in harms way…wear your masks, wash your hands, wear your masks, wash your hands, etc. etc. etc. Veering general political complaint – I gave a small amount of money to a local political campaign, and now I am inundated with emails offering swag and access, if I will just give a little more to this one or that one, or, dispensing with niceties, begging and pleading for more money. It’s very important, but I am soooo tired of it.

What about making a Political email folder and having mails from them sent directly to it? You can read/delete at will later on. I do that for overly-enthusiastic senders. Wishing everyone well,

My husband is a perennial donater to various causes. 95% of his phone calls are people asking for more money. He never answers his phone anymore if he doesn’t recognize the number.

That’s us now, but because 98% of our phone calls are from “Canada Revenue Agency” claiming a social insurance number has been compromised or there’s an outstanding tax case and we must call their 800 number back now so they can scam us. The other day I got a call from “British Columbia” (the whole province!), so I didn’t answer because that’s a usual scammer tactic, and it turned out it was the internet installer on his way to our house for his appointment. Oops.

That’s a great CP! I have a few of those — Santa Maria Novella from our Florence trip and two bottles of Eau d’Italie scents I found on 50% off sale at Ludwig Beck in Munich during Oktoberfest 2008. Also La Curie Larrea from our trip to Tuscon last spring. Hmm…

Ooh, what did you buy at SMN? I came home with Ambra, which I adore, and my husband picked out a weird scent I can never remember the name of. . . it smells like automotive parts cleaner, which he says is very nostalgic to him. Go figure!

Love that theme! I indulge in “perfume tourism”, meaning that nowadays I seek out perfumeries and other such places when I travel. I feel so lucky that my husband and I went to Florence and Venice for the first time last summer, since we had to cancel all travel plans for this summer. Paris, waaaaah! But I got to visit SMN last summer and it was wonderful. I brought home Iris and Mughetto.

Not wearing perfume yet, but i am slathered in a baby lotion I found at Target a few weeks ago. It’s French, called Mustela, and it smells like powdery citus & honeysuckle soap. Addictive, and absorbs nicely.

Been pretty much just wearing that the last few weeks. Have had the chance to wear all sorts of my scents but just keep reaching for this. It is quite perfumed, you can smell it a couple hours later on.

SsotD = Hiris + Breath of God

An odd pairing, but they work together. I was looking for soothing and strengthening at once, and the combo is doing the job.

Spritzed blue bottle Hiris on each arm, dabbed BoG solid perfume on each wrist. I’m wafty, that’s for sure.

Very glad to read everyone’s words here this morning, a little bit of normalcy goes a long way these days.

It might be worth checking out if that’s possible – photographs can be pretty affordable! I once saw a super cool picture from the 70s in a Patagonia catalogue and tracked down the photographer to purchase a print. Ultimately, it didn’t work out (he lived off the grid enough that communication stalled), but it was surprisingly easy to get in touch!
          This was the image:

I struggle hiking uphill, as I have limited lung capacity. Stopping to take a few photos on the way up is a great way to give my breathing a break! I try to not stop TOO, too often if I’m hiking with others, though. I can really slow down a group hike if I get carried away with my photography!

For the chosen Stressbuster cp, I’m in Cuir Beluga, which is quite fancy for what I’m up to today. As others mentioned, Laura was thankfully a nonevent in these parts, so I’m moving plants, furniture and wind chimes back to their proper places on the patio. Everything needs watering, so I’ve been busy.

    Anyway,

SOTD = Vilhelm Parfumerie Morning Chess

I thought it was discontinued as it was nowhere to be found online. When I saw the announcement if the brand relaunch, I contacted Arielle Shoshana and I received my bottle soon after launch!

It’s a sweet, sour and smokey leather ?.

It starts off spicy and a bit green and earthy before going into leather territory whilst still retaining a pepperiness. There wasn’t that much change or development on my skin. Would like to try it in cooler weather. I wouldn’t mind having a bottle though.

    Wear a perfume that would give you a high score in scrabble e.g. Jazz (J,8; A,1; Z,10 …total 28)
Sounds like too much trouble to me ( really) so just pick a perfume to match your favourite board game: chess, monopoly, cluedo, scrabble, trivial pursuits etc.

Beautiful. I’m surprised it’s not in the Morgan Library collection!

Love that idea! I tried Zizonia but that only earned 25 points.

Tauerville Rose Flash which was lovely during my exhausting meetings but isn’t playing so well with the humidity now that I ventured outside!

This could be part of a CP called “Do I need more of this?”

Friday already!! Another week has passed in the blink of an eye. I’ll celebrate the imminent weekend with Parfum de Nicholai’s Sacrebleu.

Wearing a bit of Chanel Paris-Riviera today from a sample. We were visiting my hubby’s brother yesterday. He rented a pontoon boat for the afternoon so we had a wonderful day on the lake with family.

I’m still on holidays this week and am getting used to this! Got home this morning and picked up my new glasses (backup pair, so the frames are old but new lenses).

Now that Riviera has worn off I will go check out my stash for my SOTA. I feel very grateful these days. Sending out hugs to all that are affected by the crazy weather and all the other daily issues being dealt with.

I’m probably overdue for new glasses/new lenses… at least that’s my excuse for all my typos here!

I’m happy Laura passed us by, but the thought of what might have been is haunting. Maybe I need to move away—but where is safe any more? The pictures are awful. Today I’m trying to get paperwork done and revise a short piece that is giving me problems. It might be time for wine and a nap. My perfume today is L’Instant, one I used to like more than now. I thought I’d give it a go but it’s going back into the cupboard. Too much honey vanilla. Just too sweet (though it has something my cat clearly loves—she just gave my wrist a very good washing. Sorry if that grosses anyone out. I think most cat people love the feel of a cat’s rough tongue!)

Kitty tongue baths can be sweet, but painful! I’m relieved to hear that you are safe Calypso.

A sandpaper tongue fan here! Not more gross that Basset Hound kisses, which I narrowly avoided when an adorable Basset walked by me on a lunch time watch 🙂

I’m really bummed out to hear that Lord & Taylor is calling it quits. Sigh. I got the shoes I wore at my wedding there, so I have fond memories of shopping at L&T. ?

Hot and sticky day here made even more so by doing a load of laundry this afternoon. At least it was productive. The intermittent wind gusts have done nothing as far as feeling less hot and sticky. ??

SOTD = repeating again in Flowerbomb La Vie En Rose, 2009 edition. I might have to sniff Dior’s Poison Girl EdT side by side with it.

I managed a 3.5 mile walk today and rushed back for the Sniffapalooza x Maison Margiela Replica x Nordstrom Masterclass at 7. Lisa D and I think stinker_kit were there. We sniffed 6 perfumes: Beach Walk, Coffee Break, Jazz Club, Lazy Sunday Morning, Sailing, Springtime in a Park. I like Coffee Break the best bUT nothing called out to me to BUY ME NOW! I think In the Fireplace is still my choice if I were to buy a bottle.

Thursday’s SOTD was Diptyque 34 Boulevard Saint Germain EDT, which I applied at bedtime and can still smell the next morning! What a cozy, warm scent it is. I’m still pondering my Dealer’s Choice for today!

Okay, my CP theme for the day, since I’ve been grumpy for a while about the terrible weather we’ve been having (as you know if you read my blog, lol!) is “Rain, Rain, Go Away.” I’m wearing Un Jardin Apres La Mousson, and I may switch later to Apres L’Ondee! Any other rain suggestions? I’ve read that Zoologist Dragonfly has rain scent notes — comments on that, anyone?
