Monday scent of the day 8/24

Posted by Robin on 24 August 2020 313 Comments

Monday, Peach Pie Day (yes please), National Waffle Day, International Strange Music Day and Pluto Demoted Day. Literary birthdays: Max Beerbohm, Jean Rhys, Jorge Luis Borges, A.S. Byatt, Paulo Coelho de Souza, Oscar Hijuelos. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the lovely Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola.

Reminder: 8/28 will be Dealer's Choice, edition 4...propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Ciao a tutti!
My dealers choice is perfumes or perfume houses that start with H. I don’t think I can do a full week of this but starting out with Hermetica.

I am in Sandalsun this morning..Vanilla Sandlwood Hazelnut. Pairing it with a fitted versace-esqe dress, lots of leopard print and swirly details so I am starting out my Monday on a very sensual note.

This week I finished this book called Swimming in the Dark by a Polish author Tomasz Jedrowski, a nice fiction book that talks about two lovers on opposite sides of the political divide as the fall of communism is happening in Poland during the 80’s. A good, fast read.

        Thank you ST!
I don’t know much about this perfume house but it seems that it markets itself as a “clean” perfume company. This one I am sampling is very nice and has no alcohol.
        We shall see..

Adding to my ‘read’ list! Currently reading A Good Man With A Dog, A Retired Game Warden’s 25 Years in The Maine Woods – it’s really interesting and engaging!
Next books in the queue are The Lost Girls Of Paris by Pam Jenoff, and The Indigo Girl, by Natasha Boyd.
Just like my perfume ‘must try’ lists, my ‘must read’ list grows by the day. 🙂

Happy Monday! Feeling optimistic today because I’m taking all of next week off! But also feeling gross because ragweed allergies ruined my morning walk.

SOTD is Deauville, which could fit the theme of impulse buys for me.

I work with several bright, young women who have stretched my tech to nearly the breaking point. I am in constant communication on Slack and WhatsApp and meetings are scheduled either on Zoom or Skype, we collaboratively on shared documents on the Google Drive, and when I miss a beat (possibly because I am combing through emails) someone always helpfully texts me to let me know. 😳

Headed out for my four-mile walk. I have a three-hour Zoom meeting today. 😯
Wish me luck I can stay awake for the entire meeting.

I was wondering… With a five (or even a 3) Hour meeting, do they make official breaks for everyone to go to the bathroom or get some water, or is everyone doing it whenever they please? Is it a video conference or just with a sound?
I hope you survived in any case 🙂

So, my personal philosophy on this, and it’s for in-person meetings as well, is I just get up and take care of my own needs. Most meetings do not take a break frequently enough for me to be at ease, and it was tripley true before my hysterectomy. I feel no need to apologize or otherwise draw attention to it, and I just do what I need to do. Maybe it means I get a reputation for getting up a lot, but I can’t imagine anyone cares all that much. Certainly, it’s never been brought up to me as a problem.

        Thankfully, it’s sound w/o video.
I handle it as Marjorie Rose does, I discreetly take breaks, get water. I’m more focused if I do. I was a hyperactive kid who couldn’t sit still, at 53, I haven’t changed much.

The morning wasn’t too bad. I’m hoping they cut it short (fingers crossed).

I’ve had a number of 5+-hour Zoom meetings or trainings, and they’ve all had built-in breaks every hour or two. But also, I have the meetings going both on my computer and my phone, so since we always have audio-only meetings, I can wander around as I need to, carrying my phone with me to listen/look at slides.

SOTD is CdG Kyoto because I’m on a Godzilla kick, which I know has nothing to do with Kyoto. Tokyo is in the same country, so I think that’s an understandable leap!

Remembering neighbors I used play with when I was kid who had every conceivable dinosaur/monster toy ever created. Going over to their house was better than going to Toys R Us. Plus, they had three Great Danes that went on the most thrilling adventures with me, and were such a nice change from our dachshunds. I mean, these were PROPER dogs! Or ponies, depending on your perspective. I’d get monstered out pretty quick, and then hang with the four leggeds in the dog run, galloping around on all fours pretending to be a wild mustang. No wonder my parents gave up on me…

Amazing to think the King of Monsters is 70 years old!

That is quite a difference size wise between a Dackel and a Great Dane. GD’s are quite gentle I guess.
Did you ever horse ride as a child?

The neighbor used to breed and show GD in AKC Conformation. Those dogs were so amazingly tolerant of me. Really, just rock solid temperament. I don’t have any experience with GD other than that. When I got into dog sport as an adult, it was mainly obedience competition, not conformation, and I had a Rottweiler I started in Schutzhund, but was unable to continue with because I moved back to Florida. So, no GD really in either of those sports that I remember. When I was 8, I used to hang around a 14 year old boy in our neighborhood for the express purpose of being able to pet and play with his Alaskan Malamute. He was horribly mean to me, not surprisingly, but it seemed a worthwhile endeavor at the time.

I did ride a fair bit when I was younger and took lessons off and on in English style riding/jumping (as opposed to what we here in the US call “western”
Style). I probably should have been a vet. But then I’d have to deal with neglectful, abusive owners and what little filter I have would crumble. I’d have to post on NST from jail. ?

It’s one of the reasons I chose medicine in stead of veterinary medicine. Also I can cope a whole lot better with people suffering than with animals having a bad time.
I would happily join you in jail ?

Great Danes are fantastic dogs! Such gentle giants, I wish they lived longer….
Growing up, we had rough-coated collies and beagles (horse country). As an adult, we had three miniature Dachshunds, Stretch, Slinky, and Jake. I swear those dogs were Rottweilers in a 13lb Doxie’s body!

Where in Florida did you live? I’m a New York transplant to Sarasota (for 20 years, now residing in SF), I have family in Sarasota, Palm Beach, and Naples.

Dachshunds are very underestimated, except by themselves. Mine kept an 80 kilo Leonberger off his own turf for 2 weeks. Without ever getting close to him. Her imposing 8 kg presence was enough.

          • ringthing says:
            24 August 2020 at 4:08 pm

I’m convinced that our neighbor’s miniature Doxie would kill and bury us if he could. He’s generally a lap dog and goes out to a tie up when said neighbors want to sit outside. That dog has a whole vocabulary of vituperative invective going steady the whole time he’s outside.

I was just up the road in St. Petersburg! We moved there from Illinois the year after the Sunshine Skyway collapsed. The first time I rode over that bridge, I thought for sure I was going to die. ?

Yes, St. Pete is pretty close to me! I loved visiting the Aquarium, Dali, and FL International Museum (now closed) when I’m there.
I remember the Sunshine Skyway bridge collapsing, it took me years to get the courage to drive over that bridge!

I make sure to visit the Columbia Cuban Restaurant when we’re there.

Yes, I’ve been to that restaurant. There was a great bar on the top where I experienced my first 3 Long Island iced teas. It didn’t go well for me. ? However, there were plans to demolish the pier even before I started traveling three years ago. I saw that it had been completely redone when I was there last month. I don’t think you can even drive on the pier anymore- pedestrian traffic only, and the iconic inverted pyramid is completely gone.

Monday! ?. Wearing CdG Kyoto for its relaxing vibe.

A tough family situation to face this week. Hope everything gets resolved fine.

I knew I was wrongly hoping that the hot and humid days of summer were gone. But….. they are back!!!!! We will be in the 90’s tomorrow and the rest of the week in the upper 80’s. I am not complaining, considering that fall is just around the corner and other people are going thru tougher times with natural disasters.

Wishing everyone a safe and healthy Monday. ?

Good morning nsters. I took a vacation day to just be in a different headspace and get a few things done.
First appointment new tires, a flu shot later, contactless pick up of some sleepy from lush.
Yesterday I got my stationary bike out of garage and set up.
Whew, it took all of 10 minutes.
Weather, sky, ash all looking pretty grim out but am lucky still not close to any fires.
I think a week of Chanel or GdG?
Please stay safe those in Bay Area.
I’ve never seen fires so close to San Jose.

Gosh, I feel for those fire fighters. I wish there was something I could do or some way I could contribute to make them more comfortable, or I don’t know, just anything! I just saw some footage yesterday of two fire fighters that were airlifted out of a very dangerous situation, and they were just unflappable. ?

Yes, seeing footage of the fire tornadoes and walls of fire, those firefighters are heroes. I’m not religious, but I pray daily for them and the home owners.
One friend of mine she lost her house, located in Boulder Creek. She and her four kids & hubby just moved there a month ago. They escaped with their lives but the entire house and everything in it is gone.

The air around my house feels better because at least it is cooler. We are no where near the fires, but golly I am heartily sick of the scent of smoke. Read a story yesterday that one firefighter’s car got burgled while he was fighting a fire–the person drained the firefighter’s bank account. In addition to the Santa Cruz mountains, I’ve had my eye on the Pt. Reyes fire. Yesterday it was 5 percent contained. . .

Commando right now. I’ve been less motivated to wear perfume for the past few days because of the fires nearby and the smoke thickening our air. Actually I think it’s affecting my ability to smell. I wore l’Eau de Tarocco again yesterday and it smelled like a very wan, astringent citrus that faded in an hour. Then I used some rose-scented face wash and it smelled like goopy soap. So I may give my nose a break until the air clears up, or maybe I’ll go the other way and pull out something nuclear later today. (Maybe I should almost literally fight fire with fire and pull out my smokiest scents?…but maybe not.)

similar sentiments here, Koyel – I was scent free because I felt I didn’t want to add more to the nasal stress load, if that makes sense. But today I spritzed, even though it looks like a particularly bleak day, smoke wise.

What are your plans, I think you will start travelling soon? Heading west? I have been delighted to see that T-Rex is back to being her usual bouncy self. It’s great when your pet is thriving again, esp. if they have not been doing so for a while.

When you’re brain is just a conveyor belt for known information, it’s the worst. Totally mind numbing and exhausting to keep spitting out the same thing every day, without any kind of creativity or challenge. I hope your upcoming work is intellectually stimulating without being draining. Do you have close friends/family where you’re living now? If so, I would imagine that’s making it a bit harder to move… or moving may be liberating..?!

You’re hitting the nail on the head. I was getting so bored. The new job will be completely different and I guess very challenging, but that is all to the good. It will be a new kind of tiredness.

I have some really good friends where I live now, and lovely neighbours. My family is a lot further away and I’m used to having long distance friends anyway. On a personal level I guess the move will not be nearly as liberating as professionally. I am looking forward though to meeting new people.

Have 2 Bath and Body Works packages coming today and hoping the 3rd one ships soon. Woke up in Cormandel today. Even though I am working today, I am going in with a tiny dab of the original Hedonist. I pulled out a decant of Sarrasins that I got a couple months ago and wore it yesterday. It either smells different sprayed or it was reformulated. It doesn’t smell like the leathery, indolic jasmine that I remember. I have a full bottle that I bought about 5 years ago and I am going to have to put that on to see if it was reformulated.

Yes – starting in a doctoral program, and teaching a first general education/writing class. I’m really excited to be a student again – especially since holding class on Zoom (I just got done) is hard work! All these little squares with the little names, and you want the students to get to know each other as well (especially since they are new to college for the most part).

Our impoverished school district devoted two weeks to onboarding students to their online classes. But, they defunded entirely my son’s science curriculum, so to graduate high school he has to take physics at the local junior college–online of course. He found this out late last week. His first day of physics is today. Fingers crossed.

Let’s hope it’s actually a better experience! We had a couple faculty leave the college for the local community college so the faculty might be really engaging, plus they might have a touch more online teaching experience than teachers at the high school. Fingers crossed!

    I’m in Over the Musk.
Had my phone interview this morning and then went into work to be part of a peer interview panel. Ironic.
Watched Dirty Dancing last night with my girls. One of the greatest summertime movies of all time imho. I did an internet search to see if that resort is still around, and not only is it still around, but they do Dirty Dancing themed weekends in the summer! A person can even stay in Baby’s cabin. Who knew?! May have to add this one to the bucket list.

The phone interview went fine (I think), standard questions from HR…tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker, what does collaboration in the workplace mean to you, etc etc. This is the same position I applied to and interviewed for almost 2 years ago and got passed over because of the BSN thing. So! Now I am halfway done, I’ll see if it makes a difference.?The in person is the day after Labor Day.

I think I’ll use the Dealer’s Choice theme to follow up on a resolution I’ve made and never kept. Sample Thunking. Each day, I will find a new sample and thunk it. (Unless I love it, in which case I may keep it longer).

Today is the original Arielle Shoshana…is that Saturday? I’ve had the sample around not wanting to thunk it, so today I took the nicely-scented plunge. I smell good.

I tried to get a sample, by the way of the new AA Orange Soleila from Guerlain. The SA at Bergdorf’s didn’t have any. Which I found surprising. It’s also interesting that no stores seem to carry any Shalimar flankers for sniffing.

I got a travel spray of MB on Fragrancenet. I think they had big bottles too. It’s so good. The SA only sprayed OS on a tissue for me. It was kind of obvious he really didn’t know anything about fragrance. He was more a skin care or makeup guy. He literally poured Chamade extrait onto a card for me to sample. Not dabbed. Poured. No complaints from me…I transferred it to my arm.

I haven’t been on NST for over a week. We were on vacation and we were gone for most of the day, and I would collapse after a full day of Napa wine tasting. I had a tough life, lol. About half of our tastings/tours were cancelled due to the fires there, and we were also monitoring the two hurricane systems heading back home where we live in New Orleans. Mother Nature 🙂

We got home late last night. Praying for all of those in the two storms’ paths.

SotD = Guerlain Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat

In the plain bottle from an online discounter, not the diamond-encrusted or whatever it was bottle for a bazillion euros. 😀 Lasts about as long as a traditional eau de Cologne, or even less, but it’s got fantastic citrus. LOVE it so much, especially in the heat.

I adore A.S. Byatt’s writing, her novel Possession is in my perpetual reading rotation.

Happy birthday to her and to all who celebrate today.

Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat is all citrus top notes – and that’s it. I love it!

Seriously, it dries down to almost nothing in a short time, a lot like Chanel Eau de Cologne. It’s glorious if you love a gentle yet zesty spritz of citrus when it’s hot or anytime at all. 😀

In enough Yosh Sottile to no longer be the least bit sottile, but I had insomnia last night so I wanted a nice soothing cloud to be in.

My dealer’s choice this week is “perfumes I didn’t know I’d love”. The bottle of Yosh was a gift from a friend who found it didn’t suit her.

My mom wore Jessica McClintock in the 90s which I found really screechy/acrid in its opening and so I was always very chary of lily-of-the-valley (my birth month flower) perfumes.

This one has changed my mind!

OH, yes, I like it very much, but it isn’t a carnation forward scent for me – I get violet. And being natural, my skin eats it pretty quickly, but I do like it and will probably get a decant somewhere when my little sample is gone.
I long for Floris Malmaison, basically. 🙂 That seemed like the perfect carnation to me, but it is gone gone gone…

      Good one.

Another, and this is a confession too: scents you got rid of only to buy again because you missed it too much — ugh! I just repurchased a scent that I sold because I no longer liked it.

SOTD, finally, is Traversee du Bosphore. I reached for it, and now I’m contemplating the CP, so I guess that means I’m doing it backwards! I think this scent would fall into a CP like “A Trip to the Candy Store,” scents that appeal to your sweet tooth. It would also work if there was a CP on “suede” notes–soft, buttery leathers instead of harsher, animalic ones.

May also be good if we did a gender nonbinary project–scents that do not easily match with either traditional “masculine” or “feminine” associations. (As a side note, I find it so fascinating that we have defined certain fragrances with gender–who decided ozonic was masculine and jasmine was feminine? Notes like rose and sandalwood differ in their gendered associations depending on culture. It’s like the pinking and bluing of baby clothes–relatively recent, but now seems so ubiquitous, it’s hard to imagine the world being another way.)

I’m house twins with Lucasi in Memo Marfa. I love this scent! Not sure I can think of a theme to go with it though. Unless something like avant-garde towns! The latest forecast gives a 30% chance of Laura coming to Houston-Galveston and 70% of heading further east toward Louisiana. I’m pretty well-stocked except I forgot coffee. Will pick up cold brew in case my power goes out. I’ll shelter in place but must bring all outdoor flowerpots and decorations inside due to wind. A big chore. Mom’s place is also prepared and has a backup generator. The director told us their local fire department also keeps a close watch on them and has equipment to move people in case of flooding. I didn’t sleep well last night but am trying to be stoic now.

Late today, after a very sluggish start. I’m weather twins with perfumelover67… the muggies have rolled in with a vengeance today. Yuck!

This week I am wearing perfumes that recently joined my collection. I seem to have a surplus and may go into next week or just pick another week to do Dealer’s Choice.

I’ll repeat this when I can post earlier. I have a bottle of wildflower honey that I’ve used the past 2 years that had since crystallized. I am looking for ideas on what to do with it. Coumarin suggested adding butter and using as a spread for toast (good idea!). Another said bake with apple and walnuts (should be good but I have yet to turn on my oven). I’m looking for ideas such as how about adding vanilla extract and making it into a sweetener for coffee or even seltzer? Thanks!

I just heat it up to melt the crystals, and use it as honey… ?

That perfume sounds lovely, but too dam* hot here for that type of scent right now.

Crystallized honey can be returned to a liquid state by either putting the container into a hot water bath for 20 minutes or thereabouts, or carefully microwaving it in 10 second intervals.

However, I’ve found that crystallized honey is easier to use as a sweetener in tea. It’s easier to spoon out that way, and the crystals don’t affect any other properties of the honey.

I melt crystallized honey in the microwave and use it to bake challah. But you probably don’t want to turn on your oven right now. 🙂

Right now, I’d say that “happy making” is much more important than inventive for a perfume.
