Monday scent of the day 8/17

Posted by Robin on 17 August 2020 240 Comments

That was fast — it's Monday again. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando. I was sick yesterday (and did get a Covid-19 test in the afternoon), and am taking it easy today even though I feel much better.

Reminder: 8/21 will be Captured Unicorn Friday. Wear a perfume that you thought would be impossible to get, but you managed it. If you have not yet captured a unicorn, wear anything you like and tell us about the unicorn you'd like to catch. Suggested by Undina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

my unicorn would be the parfum (spray) in a sort of a gold flat case that I bought off of evil Bay. Over on the BdJ blog, she does a video on classics and I have the same bottle of Shalimar as her if you want to see what I mean. And the other is Ode a La Vanille.

Robin, take it easy and feel better soon! Hope your test is negative.
I’m in Tam Dao, which is not a unicorn, but my bottle kind of is. It’s the LE 30 ml with the orange tint. I think this may be the only daily lemming that I jumped on.
Yesterday was a perfect day. Great weather, I finished my paper, got a pedi, AND my son showed up for a surprise visit so we got to spend a rare dinner as an entire family.☺️
I was planning on taking my girls to ikea today, but luckily I checked the website first and the desk madtownteen wants for her newly restyled room is out of stock. It would have been just my luck to make the 90 mile drive to find it not there.

Oh, I am hoping it’s positive…felt like crap yesterday, but still, I would consider it mild, and then I would know I have decent immunity for the next few months!

You smell great, and jealous of your color bottle.

I have six iterations of Shalimar and love them all. The unicorn I’d like to find is Tom Ford Sahara Noir or Slumberhouse Pear and Olive, and Balenciaga Cristobal (remember in the early 2000s when Cristobal was all over the discounters?) Today I’m going to wear Shalimar edt, modern version.

which iterations do you have? I have a small decant of what I think is the current edp, and a vintage parfum de toilette which is much easier to wear because the opening is so much softer but more the scent is overall more fleeting. I’m debating the vintage Edc (in the round bottle, there seem to be many around on ebay but I don’t really like non-spray bottles), and/or also the completely different, newish Shalimar cologne. So I’m always curious to hear what others have and love!

Shalimar edc is what I wear the most, my bottle is about 17 years old. It’s the most lemony vanilla with gentler base notes, I wear it to bed a lot. I also like the edt, I have 2 from the 60s/70s and one that’s about 10 years old. The older ones have very satisfying growly bases. I have edp from the 90s which is smooth and round smelling, wish I had more of that one. And I have a small bottle of extrait that I bought from eBay many years ago that smells divine.

Robin, take it easy! I hope you recover soon, Covid or not.

Wearing the last drops of my decant of Amouage Opus VIII. I wore it a lot this summer and enjoyed it greatly. It will be missed!

Since yesterday something is different in the air, despite still being warm and humid. Fall is knocking on the door, waving hello from a very close distance ?. Every year I feel that change, almost around the same time, just from one day to the other. Weird, but interesting feeling.
I started burning a BBW fall candle yesterday and will finish the last one for sumner today. After having an unbelievable amount of candles, I only have 4 left. I made a big dent on my collection, since the pandemic started. I will need few more for next year, so I may wait until the candle day sale.

    Happy Monday, everyone! ?

Violating my no buy with an unsniffed purchase of Fresh Cream Soft Suede off eBay. It interested me. I have few milky scents and the addition of whiskey was hard to pass up.

That’s the kind of photo I’d like to live in! ?

You know it’s a Monday when you get scheduled for some annual medical tests at the a$$crack of dawn, drag yourself there after hardly any sleep because your days and nights are (still!) mixed up, and then the receptionist tells you, “We have you scheduled for TOMORROW at the a$$crack!” Oy! ?

So, just now getting to choose a perfume and it’s eenie, meenie, miny, mo- EL BG for the win!

Hope everyone else’s morning started in a better fashion. ??

Im such a slacker, but seriously happy to be getting this stuff done since I have totally let my health slip since I started traveling three years ago. Welcome back from vacation! I must have missed your “I’m going on vacation” post, or I forgot I saw it because I’m old and demented. I’ve missed your almost daily Shalimar posts and was concerned you might be ill. Very happy I was wrong and you were enjoying a bit of R&R with family! ??

The only thing I was “ill” about was figuring out school for my little ones this fall..

On vacation I brought one decant of the “orange creamsicle” Shalimar, and the regular EdT. Most days I just smelled like Caress soap. Does anyone still use that one. I love it.
Lots of reading. The home we rented in the sticks had a rooster and chickens that came to visit every morning. He was a gentleman and didn’t come hollering too early.

Monday of my last week before retirement. 5 pebbles left in the jar on my desk, one for each day this week. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Commando so far, it is outrageously hot. 82 degrees at 7am, YUCK. At least we didn’t get any lightning storms last night — the previous night was surreal, with near constant lightning strikes from 3 am til 8 am. Spectacular to watch, but scary too. My husband was out from 4:30am to 11pm with his fire dept, fighting all the small fires. Hoping this heat wave ends soon.

I shall have to think about unicorns…. I’m sure I have acquired some (restraint is not my MO, lol). The ones I can think of are mostly winter frags which I can’t even contemplate wearing in this weather.

28 La Pausa actually lasts way longer on me – 8 sprays = 8 hours. Tears of Iris fizzled out after 2.5 hours and the next 8 lasted a little bit over 2 hours. It smells really good though.

Failing the CP, except tangentialy, still on the lookout for the best Vanilla ever…
SOTD = Solstice Scents Mountain Vanilla. This one was a free sample that came with purchased samples of Estate Carnation, Estate Vanilla and After the Rain that I ordered. This one is my favorite, but not an immediate love, and the only one I might replace with one of the larger spray samples. Definitely Vanilla, slightly sweet, with a mentholated herbal tang, layered over slightly smoky woods. Much less of the burned sugar aspect that makes the Estate samples unattractive to me. The menthol makes it seem sorta masculine on first application, but it settles in and is soothing and stimulating at the same time, rich on skin, not too much sillage, a good work from home scent, and probably a winterish work from the office scent, those who still go to offices or clinics or whatnot. After the Rain smells moldy to me – I think she got a bad batch of something – it’s hard to imagine that anyone would want to smell like that on purpose. The other free sample I was sent is Gin Flower, which smells good on first sniff, and lives up to it’s name, but it has the tang of tobacco in it, so I am afraid to even put it on my skin and be exposed to it for all day long…
The weather is lovely, and since I am working from home, I spent the lunch hour tidying up my yard. I don’t know where all that miscellaneous stuff comes from! It looks better now. 🙂

Have you tried just wearing vanilla extract? ?.

With that said, I keep wondering if you should let the perfumes rest for a month before wearing them. I never heard of doing that or I should say I never paid attention to any paper or instructions and only clued in to it when resident vanilla expert She-Ra mentioned it — or I could be misattributing, but you get the picture.

My favorite vanilla is L’eau de Missions, or whatever it was called, which is a pretty straight up vanilla, I have to admit. I am sorry they discontinued it.

These Solstice scents have rested since I got them now in early June, so they have aged two months, and the Mountain Vanilla and the Gin Flower do smell more balanced to me now than they did initially. The Estate Vanilla also smells better than it did as the burned sugar has mellowed a bit, but I like the Mountain Vanilla much more. The Estate Carnation is a disappointment because I get lots of burned sugar and little wafts of carnation now and then. I don’t know what that is – maybe it is supposed to be a caramel or something, but to me it smells like a candy factory had a fire…. and caramel and carnation have nothing to do with each other in my mind to begin with. And the “After the Rain” just smells off to me, from the first sniff, and hasn’t changed.
But with my many allergies, I am sure what I smell and what people whose nasal passages have not reacted violently to most growing things every summer for decades, might be very different. I actually have 3 other Solstice Scents in my “Samples to Buy” queue right now – so I am not dissing the perfumer or the brand in general, it’s just that some of these I picked didn’t suit me.

I encountered a question about race when I was doing paperwork for pre-paying my mom’s funeral expenses. I honestly didn’t know how to answer that question at first, since what popped into my head was “Human”. Pretty sure that wasn’t the information they wanted.

It did occur to me, much later, that why would she let a pregnant woman carry her bags? Especially since when we got to the car, there was an able bodied man waiting. So I am just assuming she is dumb.

Oh, so sorry. I had that happen one time – I was wearing a gathered tunic I had bought in Morroco, and working at a library, and someone asked me when I was due. I turned the tunic into a couple head scarves. 🙂

Lillyjo, I had that same question asked when I was in my late 40’s. I laughed and said “Not pregnant, just fat.” Embarrassed the person who asked, and this individual was not easily shamed. I thought the question rather silly, given my age.

Atelier des Ors Rouge Saray from a decant. I think I don’t need more of it, it’s just okay. I like Rose Omeyyad better.

More humid heat, very low perfume mojo lately due to anxiety about an impending move. It will be fine in a year but right now I’m in the middle of the stress.

Do you have the new version or the older, cooler bottle? I used to really like it. I know it’s dumb but I immensely dislike the EL uniform bottles. I’ve been on the hunt for an older Cinnabar.

I have original bottles – found after many an hour lurking on Ebay, and one thrift store find. I too dislike the standardized bottle, and I can’t remember if I’ve tried Tpd in the new bottle; but I did try Cinnabar in the new bottle and it was quite good, if that helps.

I remember wishing I could afford a bottle of Tuscany per Donna when it came out, but I was a broke college student at the time. It was a gorgeous sandalwood perfume back then.

Also, ITA with lillyjo… HATE the new standardized EL bottles. They’re boring.

It’s a cool cool evening although still humid, and it feels like ‘the signal’ from Mother Nature for the approach of Fall. It’s that weird sensation from childhood I get that says school will be starting soon. It’s a bittersweet need to hold onto late nights outside vs. the anticipation of the smell of fresh pencil shavings and the excitement of clothes shopping for new & warmer outfits. It always leaves me a bit melancholy.
Feel better Robin, I hope that you get your way!
