Wednesday scent of the day 8/12

Posted by Robin on 12 August 2020 235 Comments

Hump Day, World Elephant Day and International Youth Day. Birthdays: Radclyffe Hall, Pat Metheny. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking points in a Guerlain creamsicle: one spray of Spiritueuse Double Vanille, two sprays of Mandarine Basilic. If I had Demeter Condensed Milk on hand, it would be perfect. (Then again, I could just get Demeter Orange Cream Pop.)

Reminder: 8/14 is Creamsicle Day! Wear a creamsicle fragrance if you have one. (And you can find lots of suggestions — including layering combos — in the comments to 5 perfumes: consider the creamsicle).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Finishing work in a couple of minutes! Woohoo! Feels nice to be halfway through the week. Weekend is this much closer now.

Not a creamsicle but I decided to go tropical today in Mona di Orio Jabu. Petitgrain, orange, lots of ylang, woods and tonka. Good for 28°C.

Ever since the beginning of 2020 I’ve been doing a lot of home exercises and changing my eating habits. I’ve lost over 20 kgs in 6 months.
The picture you saw was from my EMS training – you work out in a special suit that additionally stimulates muscle with electro impulses. It’s so intense that 20 minutes are an equivalent of few hours at the gym with heavy weights.

More bright and cheerful with Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Orange Magnifica. I touch too clean and mild for me, but considering some of the AAs that followed, a triumph.

Good morning! I’m wearing reminiscence guimauve today so I have 50% of a Creamsicle going. I just blind bought a small bottle of gucci (the brown one) so if i don’t like it it will go into the swap pile 🙂

If you don’t like it right away, try it again in cooler weather. Personally, I find it too heavy in the summer.

According to Fragrantica, the original Theorema has much more spice. The Esprit de Ete has vanilla, which I don’t see listed in the original. Both scents do have amber and citrus.

Ooh, making a note of the idea of layering Demeter Condensed Milk and a fragrance that smells like oranges. 😀 I still have a bunch of those Atelier Cologne Advent Calendar samples, and many other citrus fragrances. I think Rayleighblue was the one who really got me into grapefruit and other citrus fragrances. 🙂 (Thank you!)

And I could doctor up a spray of CSP Vanille Abricot (thank you, nancyleandros!) with a layer of orange…

Currently, I still smell somewhat like cardamom candle wax. (lol!) I broke out several of my dozens and dozens of candles when the electricity went out last night. I was trying to pour off some of the melted wax from the candle jar so the puddle of wax wouldn’t extinguish the flames, and ended up wearing a bit of the cardamom candle wax. Oh, well. I smell kind of spicy, and oddly enough, I’m smelling a parsley smell from it. I’m just glad that the power went back on after a few hours.

Yes, we had quite the thunderstorm in the afternoon, but the lights stayed on today. We did a very productive grocery shopping trip in the morning, and were home well before the thunder started, but I decided that I didn’t feel like going out again that day.

I second that thought. 🙂 We’ve had the transformer nearest to us blow out with a bang like three times this summer, at times when it wasn’t raining. Mom’s been talking on and off about getting a generator.

And I never did get around to perfume or cologne, creamsicle or not.

Mom finally ordered her own Kindle, the basic Kindle e-reader. She got spoiled being able to adjust the font size of the text. She showed me a paperback she got from the library yesterday that had very small print. “I’ll look to see if it’s available as an e-book,” she said. I said she’d have a lot of choices of Kindle books to draw from sharing with me, since I’d been getting free romance and cozy mystery e-books for years. That’s not even counting library e-books.

My little house in Greece had blue shutters and mint and basil growing outside the kitchen door. It was 6 blocks to the Med.

The house, like many in Greece was named and had a small plaque above the door that said ” Summer dream”. Except it was in Greek. I wept when we left.

Solved the neighbor’s tree over our fence problem by chopping tree limb into a few smaller pieces and tossing them back over the fence. Now their tree is their problem again, but by doing part of the work for them we have been good neighbors.

No creamsicle scents here, so I’m in OJ Champaca.

I’m ready to be done with summer. I like heat fine, but this humidity is for the birds.

Had a nice time at my knitting group last night. We limited the # of people, and it was nice to catch up and see all the beautiful donations created during the lockdown. One of the women performs with the Oratorio Society, and she confirmed Carnegie Hall is closed down until at least January. Which means our Messiah tradition won’t happen this year. ?

Coffee, geriatric cat perched on my back, no SOTD, yet. I will go out for a run in a bit, so maybe I’ll wear something to project my personal space bubble at people I may pass by.

Another “work” day for me today, with two meetings. The second is a White Fragility book study group with a handful of staff from my school. We’ve spent the last 3 weeks on Chapter two, opting to take our time and have the conversations rather than pushing past it with some sense of urgency just to get it done. It’s good work, and I’m glad we’re doing it.

I accidentally left the soaker hose running all night long last night. So, one of my beds of flowers is very deeply watered right now. Not a risk of overwatering when it’s so dry, but it still feels wasteful!

Opted for No 19 EDP, so no points. Saving Anne Pliska for Friday and hoping it cools off in time to wear. AP scares me a bit – it’s very assertive. Humidity and heat here are brutal (for the Northeast). Trying to imagine myself on the beach with feet in the water, a good book, and a big floppy hat.

Should I spring for Theorema on evilbay? Seems very pricey.

Speaking of chocolate… at the pharmacy I found boxes of chocolate moon pies for a dollar, plus they had coupons on them for fifty cents off.. plus I had a twenty percent loyalty coupon! Chocolate math free! I bought 5 boxes, lol.
Sotd is No.19 edp because I wanted to smell classy.

I know it is hot outside, but in my basement office I am pretty chilly, so I am wearing socks with my Birkenstocks, and a wool/silk cardigan over my linen pants and linen t-shirt. 🙂
And in La Liturgie des Heures + a swipe of the Somalian Rose/Nag Champa/Frankencense/Sandlewood oil that is my other favorite scent, after the Chypre/Wisteria combo I wore the other day.
I am sadly lacking in Creamsicle candidates…but I am enjoying the creative application of the concepts people come up with here. 🙂

I love wearing linen -it is soothing to my irritation prone skin, and I can put it on, and then forget about it, because it’s going to look wrinkled anyway, which just announces, Real linen!, and the more you wash it the softer it gets. And Birkies – not that I am a huge granola head or anything, they look clunky, but my feet and legs just feel much better if I wear them. I’m a comfort first sorta gal. Then I pick pretty colors, so that anyone who is noticing can tell I made some effort. This outfit is shades of blue and navy, and the navy socks have little turquoise and pink flowers on them. Perky.

Linen breathes more than cotton- I feel cooler in linen than in cotton when it gets hot. Good linen that calls itself “natural” or “organic” probably has fewer coatings on it than most cotton which is treated to be less inclined to wrinkle, and that is probably what makes me feel less itchy- I have a lot of allergies and low grade chemical sensitivities. Linen just is less irritating in some way than cotton. Probably if I spent money on high grade, certified organic cotton I might have that same sort of relief but if I am going to spend a lot of money, might as well get linen, right?

The handkerchief weight linen shirts LLBean and ColdWater Creek have in the summertime go on sale and are pretty cheap. I buy them and linen things from Orvis, ( no affiliation with any of these, they are common catalog outlets I use) – just avoid the ones that say “treated to be less wrinkly.” I buy oversized and wash them in hot water with baby detergent and no other additives and dry them vigorously. Once they stop shrinking after half a dozen washes, and the fibers fluff up they get really soft and I have some that are years old – the good ones wear like iron and the poorly made ones sewn with cotton or polyester thread will experience seam failure after a while.. I figured one time that the detergent that is non- irritating to baby bottoms might be gentle on my skin too, and sure enough, less itchy.

Atelier Camelia Intrepide this morning. It’s nice, soft suede with powder and something vaguely sweet. I’m thinking it’s an old sample, because it packed more of a punch when I tried it when it came out in 2016. Or maybe my nose has changed. I’ll try to create a creamsicle this afternoon with Mandarine Glaciale and Tihota. We’ll see how that goes!

Sautéed some mushrooms and cooked turkey Italian sausage for homemade pizza tonight. That’s for hubster. I trash mine up with pineapple, Canadian bacon, bell peppers and barbecue sauce. Rebel.

My husband and I have NEVER agreed upon pizza toppings. It keeps us from trying the artisanal places in the neighborhood (we are spoiled with several world-class options in walking distance), because they only offer one, large size of pie, and they’re $$$. Guess I need to find a pizza buddy.

    Wednesday!

    1) Am in the Petals fragrance by BeautyPie. It will not be reordered by the company ( I think this was a slow seller for them) and will be enjoying the last of the bottle.

    2) A cool, dry morning today and the day may not see 80F- perfect for after work (masked) bike ride.

    3) I have huckleberries from a connection and I am so happy! They have been portioned out and are now in the freezer; later on in the season the tiny, super sweet ones come in from the coast, and I hope I can score a pound of those to make into syrup! Also, plum and blackberry jamming is in the works for the weekend.

As a kid in Lincoln City, we would sneak onto reservation land and pick huckleberries on the north end of town. There’s a casino there, now, and no more huckleberries. 🙁 I would be more ethical and seek out a farmstand nowadays, but I do miss those lovely gems!

To this day, there was no explanation to how it happened (how he got knocked off his bike and also had a spider bite).

Wednesday! I have 8 pebbles left in the jar on my desk, for 8 work days left til I retire. Yessssssss

No scent for me for the past few days. I have been having terrible headaches; rude combination of heat (not so hot today, tho a heat wave is coming); stress (working 12 hour days); and eyestrain (working 12 hour days). I picked up a perfume bottle this morning, and decided Nope! Best not to associate a scent with this headache.

Can’t wait to be done with this…! (both the headache and the work)

My own experiences with mourning suggest it can ebb and flow as we go through different life events. I mourned the loss of my stepmother (who raised me) when I graduated from college, and again when I became a teacher, and again when I married. Each time, I wished she was there to celebrate with me. Same for each challenging time, when I wished she was there to support me. Somehow, I find it reassuring to think I don’t have to “get over it,” or assume it will always get better with time. Less pressure to try to convince myself I *should* feel a certain way.

      Hugs to you!

I was given a tip about creating a Creamsicle scent from someone at an estate sale who smelled great. She used a bottle of Mountain Ocean Coconut Skin Trip lotion (8 oz) and added 10 drops of orange fragrance oil to it.You could use a smaller amount of the lotion with an equivalent amount of fragrance oil to see if you liked it.I personally have not tried it yet.

Oh interesting! So I wonder if I could add a few drops of Sweet Orange to my Bronze Goddess cream.

Had a bit of an epic yesterday …. More epic in imagination than reality as I was up in Auckland when it was announced it was going into lockdown due to 4 cases of community spread coronavirus ( we had been free of community spread for 100 days, with the only cases in govt. run isolation facilities). People who live outside Auckland were allowed to travel home…provided they could get tickets, transport etc. i suspect lockdown will be extended so it was a pretty sombre mood . I managed to get a flight home…not so difficult in reality as all the business travellers had cancelled…but you know how it goes when you start thinking about how long it would take to walk 1800km , and whether it would be terrible to do so or perhaps just great “material” that should be embraced as an adventure. The nicest part was arriving at our airport which is situated admidst dairy farms and paddocks. As the plane taxied off the runway to the terminal I looked out of the window and watched a calf being born. Plopped out and was guvena nice licking from its mother. Funny old life. Tried Rozu while in auckland, wonderful leafy rose and cinnamon opening but then bleeds out to a kind of weleda rose body spray. Heavy rain here, 2 dogs, and copper to celebrate….and a face mask!!!

I was very sorry to hear the news from New Zealand yesterday! I admit, I’ve been looking to that part of the world for inspiration as we all try to navigate during The Pause. Still, 4 new cases is better than the 300-400 a day in my state at the moment.

I think most people here have been watchful, waiting for a second wave of cases especially after following the situation in Melbourne. I am sure theee will be more cases of community spread

Once, I had a panic attack at the airport and had to seriously consider what it would be like to just live there, instead of getting on the plane.
I’m glad you were able to fly home.

I’m wearing DelRae Bois de Paradis today because I had to get out all of my DelRae bottles yesterday to find Amoureuse which was at the very back of the cupboard. Once I saw Bois de Paradis I could not put it away without wearing it. One of my desert island picks. I must say I needed a pick-me-up after someone on Facebook, on another person’s page, called me an ignorant, stupid racist for a comment I wrote there about Kamala Harris’s father. (I don’t think this is going to be political, Robin.) I referred to his job and some of his writing. The person also said I was no doubt too stupid to be able to understand a word he had written (Donald Harris). I replied in a very mature and gracious way about what I meant and asked him to reconsider his criticism. Our mutual friend has gotten in touch and is really mortified. It’s a truly upsetting situation because what I said was meant in a complimentary way. I have tried to brush it off as one of those trivial on-line spats with no real significance but it has made me feel upset and on edge. Thanks for letting me vent. So after my shower and perfume I went out to a very small inexpensive boutique I like and shopped and bought a new top, necklace, and earrings. That’ll show ’em, ha ha!

Horrible, ugh. I think it’s best to stand tall rather than cower in those situations, as you know the truth in what you wrote rather than the twisted version. Your post has encouraged me to look up Donald Harris’s writing so thank you for that. I will learn something new today because of you!

Thank you to both of you. The combination of insults was pretty staggering really. Apparently my friend, the one whose page it was on, has now removed his posts.
I forgot to mention a nice thing. A Spanish professor friend of mine, though not a close one, has been posting about making jam this summer from his own fruit trees. He’s made his own labels and everything. He posted today about making some white peach jam with lavender and I put a “love’ and said it sounded fantastic, and he said he would send me a jar!! I can’t wait!! So the good balances out the bad, I hope/think.

No perfume but used some of that Method Creative Growth handsoap in the scent Marshmallow Fluff. Smells good.

Also, for a really good creamsicle treat, do try Summer Dreamsicle from Schwans, you won’t regret it. I am not really an ice cream person but went through a tub pretty quickly when I ordered one.

Stupid summer weather today. ? 4 hours of nearly continuous thunderstorms this afternoon. ⚡☔ The only saving grace was that we didn’t lose power from it. And to add to my irritation, Mr. Jalapeno was stomping around the house for a couple of hours looking for a couple of things he misplaced.

SOTD = back in Iris Nazarena. However, I think I need a heavier-duty “Keep Calm and Carry On” scent for tomorrow. This week has kinda been a PITA.
