Tuesday scent of the day 8/11

Posted by Robin on 11 August 2020 217 Comments

Happy Teapot Tuesday! It also happens to be International Afternoon Tea Week, which I think mostly means you're allowed a treat with your tea. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still looking for my Kerosene Unforsaken, so meantime I'm in a dab of Kerosene Black Vines. No points for me but Black Vines always makes me smile. Tea is a blend of Numi Chinese Breakfast and Shangri-La Estate black tea (Nepal, from Upton).

Reminder: 8/14 is Creamsicle Day! Wear a creamsicle fragrance if you have one. (And you can find lots of suggestions — including layering combos — in the comments to 5 perfumes: consider the creamsicle).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown are items from the Lenox Sprig & Vine collection. The teapot, available in white or navy, runs around $70.

I’m in Over the Musk from a newly acquired decant, bigger than the last one I had. This may just about be the perfect musk if only it had more sillage. Maybe I just need to spray more.?
Thank you so much to everyone yesterday for my daughters birthday wishes! We ended up getting rained out shortly after we had our picnic lunch, so we are going to try again today. Today it’s beautiful and sunny and it’s the last day of my staycation. Might as well make the most of it!??

I’m wearing Calligraphy Saffron, which is a favorite. I also like Calligraphy. Strangely enough, although I am a big fan of rose fragrances, I really didn’t like Calligraphy Rose the one time I tried it. I’ll have to try it again, sometime when I have the time to scrub it off if I can’t stand it.

You smell wonderful. I first got and enjoyed Saffron because of the note list, then lemminged on having to have *the set* and I like Rose a little better overall. But each is perfect when the mood is right. Note to self to make and share decants one of these days. I will never use 300mls of the lovely Calligraphy set!

Wearing Lovely again, the more I wear it the more I like it. I’ve been out of pocket for a few days and missed the weekend poll so I’m going to answer it now. When I first fell down the rabbit hole, everyone swooned about Guerlain. Shalimar is a life long love, and I love Nahema, but everything else smells awful on me. I won a blog drawing for vintage fragrances a while back but they are mostly Guerlain, and even at peak vintage they smell terrible on me. So look me up at the freebie meet if you are a Guerlain fan!

So far Shalimar is the only Guerlain that I can’t wear. I love Guerlain, and although I only have bottles of Mitsouko edt, and Vol de Nuit, I have many of the older ones in decants. I can’t say that I’ve tried a lot of the newer Guerlains, other than Mon Guerlain, which, come to think of it, I actually disliked.

Oh gosh, what beautiful teaware. Must keep reminding myself of how often I break things.

A storm came through last night and knocked a big limb down in our backyard. It’s the neighbors tree, and a third of it is now on our fence. Generally awful neighbors, so I’m sure it’s us who will be dealing with it. Grr.

My hand reached of it’s own volition for Candy this morning. Wise hand.

I’m game! Going for creamsicle today by layering L’Artisan Couleur Vanille with Guerlain Mandarine Basilic. Does it work? It kind of does but it’s more of a very sophisticated creamsicle scent, maybe more Van Leeuwen vs. Breyers? The Guerlain required 3Xs the sprays of the vanilla to get the right mix.. ha!

Another steamer here today in NYC. Can’t get over it’s almost mid-Aug!

    P.S. love that tea set!

Tea is strong coffee, toasted sourdough with jam for breakfast.

I’m in SB Smoked Ambergris sptayed last night before bed. May reapply or switch after I wake up a bit.

I have more chores today that require me to mingle, so I’m girding my loins for that challenge.

T-Rex is feeling so much better! She is now back in her tap-tap-tap alarm clock mode at the crack of dawn. Recently, she has been just sleeping through it, and the only time she showed any animation was when the kibble bag rattled. She’s now back to inviting play by tossing her ball at me and doing the play bow thing. Makes me so happy to see her jaunty little self once again high stepping through life! ?

Continuing Atelier week in Vetiver Fatal and Poivre Electrique. PE is just a lot of different peppers on me. There months be something minty or piney, but it’s a definite no. VF leads with a bunch of bright citrus, and then it’s hello fig! I like Tom Ford Grey Vetiver edt…it’s more subtle. The TF has been on my list for awhile.

Tea of the day is still Taylors Scottish Breakfast tea + use it up oolong.

Osmanthe Yunnan which I’ve decided is almost perfect. I just love this one and will be sorely sad when my sample is gone. It was a large manufacturer’s sample but I’ve almost drained it.

SOTM is Ubar. Sparkley lemons. Maybe I get a partial credit for the CP for being in the citrus family? Certainly not creamy. More like lemonade than lemon meringue pie.

Still working on my coffee. Have a cat on my back, again. He’s still very proud of himself.

Today I have two “meetings.” Suddenly, my schedule is filled up for the coming weeks. Anyone who thinks teachers get two months “off” is welcome to take a look at my calendar. So much work to do on any year, but especially now.

Included in my coming days needs to be moving back into my classroom. Pre-pandemic, my school was under construction, updating the 50 year old HVAC system, amongst other things. We all had to pack up and move out when it became clear we wouldn’t be there to help get things out of the way. My classroom is typically full of fun and exciting science doodads. Not sure how much of that stuff to put back out! Will I see kids in my room this year? Maybe I should leave it more spare, in case we have to clean everything exposed every day?

I’m probably the worst offender but we have a clean desk policy. I have my own in the office and to me, as long as I don’t leave any work stuff out in the open … but no, clean desk is nothing but the tech and peripherals. When most of us were working remotely (still the case), every office space went through a deep cleaning and the cleaning company boxed up everything on the desks, labeled the boxes and left them under the desk. I hope in the open seating area people remember where they last sat before they stopped going in!

I do love my piles of stuff on my desk. However, bigger challenges are all the manipulatives I use to teach science. Example–when I teach density, I have 3 identical plastic bottles, one filled with cotton balls, one with water and one with nails. They all have the same volume but different masses. Very easy for kids to *get* the concept of density. So, I leave those out so they have experience with it when we talk about it.

Of course, I can NOT leave it out, but there’s absolutely no substitute for that kind of practical demonstration for abstract concepts in science. I have so many other examples. Plus microscopes, student projects, little experiments they can try on their own, etc, etc. It’s an essential part of how I teach and connect kids with the content.

During normal times, that’s up for ongoing debate. Every few years, some principal or superintendant gets their panties in a bunch over our personal, mismatched shelves and such and makes teachers get rid of anything not purchased by the district. Then that stuff slowly moves back into classrooms because the rooms weren’t designed with enough built-in storage. With construction, I have no idea what my room will look like. I know they took out some stuff. Hopefully that means they added new storage instead of leaving it empty space!

I am also a science teacher, but I’m going to keep my classroom surfaces as bare as possible this year. I don’t want to have to either be saying “don’t touch the topographic models” all the time or having to sterilize something if a kid gets too interested in it. I’m going to be cleaning enough as is once we leave virtual school.

This week is my go to the hospital and hide in my office week. I put on Vivacious at home, such a good name for this scent. However, after compulsively washing my hands every 45 minutes, it had faded away by 10:00. 🙁

I didn’t notice that it disappeared so quickly when I tried it out at home, but I used up the end of my decant, so perhaps I had applied with a more liberal hand before? Anyway, this disappearing act calls into question if I will make a FB purchase of this.

Rummaged in my drawers and found a manufacturer’s 3 ml spray sample of Do Son, so now I have established a Tuberose barricade around me for the rest of the day. 🙂

I am on my lunch hour, and all I want to do is pick out counter samples for my fantasy kitchen redo, although I have really decided, that if I ever won the lottery and actually did redo my kitchen, I would go with soapstone. Utterly durable. I need things around me that last and last, and cannot be harmed by adorable hubbie’s experiments with chemicals and fire…

When I am at the hospital, I wash my hands every 45 minutes or hour, whether I touched anything or not. I read a best practices email from some big clinic that said they had found that washing your hands on a hourly schedule, so that you had washed your hands at least 10 times a day, reduced your chances of getting infected by 90%. At home, I don’t do it so often, but when I touch stuff I haven’t already sanitized with 10% bleach or a spray of 90% isopropyl alcohol, I wash my hands just to be safe, so probably still 6 or 7 times a day.

90% isopropyl alcohol is great in that it dries quickly, does not damage most fabrics, and stinks enough that the uninitiated perceive it as “strong” and therefore “doing something.”

We have manufactured quartz countertops in our kitchen, and we like them a lot. It seems pretty durable–one tiny chip from when something heavy fell down from a shelf above it. No stains, doesn’t require sealant, etc. Just another material to consider. 😉

I called the cancer store (that’s where I mostly donate and shop) and got a lengthy lecture on how selective they now are etc. – it was a bit awkward. I always thought I already did a good job of only donating what can be sold, but they laid down the law! Nothing older than 5 years, pristine condition, etc.

I just placed an order for the 3mL atomizers so will be ready to flex my decanting muscles once they get here. I held out from ordering as the only 3mL atomizers I like are from SKS Bottles and they had been out of stock for a looong time – I had been checking twice a week for the past 2 months (I did not trust the email me when they’re back in stock feature).

But I’m experienced enough to know exactly what I have to do the second I get access to that Google for education suite.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone who’s starting a school year virtually has enough tools/ support. But I’m happy to be teaching freshmen so we can all go through the weirdness if starting at a new school without being on campus together!

Vintage Shalimar Parfum de Toilette, an ebay bargain! It’s wonderful, softer than the decant of the (non vintage, I think) edp I have, so the opening notes aren’t as in your face. Lasting power is not super, but I don’t mind. Now I’m tempted to go further down that rabbit hole – it’s pretty easy to find vintage edc versions of the scent, and I’m reading that they are very different and very good. Plus, that Shalimar cologne by Wasser sounds interesting and Fragrancenet has it….oh boy!

I’m decidedly fragrant today in five sprays of Amoureuse. It’s a powerhouse so in a word I reek. Yesterday I read the old post with suggestions of creamsicle scents and it was in there. I was so surprised that I had to get mine out and try it today. Hmm! Yes it has a strong tangerine opening, and creamy florals. It’s just a bit too spicy though to count. But hey, any excuse to wear this beautiful perfume!

We had a good writing seminar this morning. The teacher wants us to try the six-word writing challenge. Someone, maybe Hemingway?, wrote this: “Baby shoes for sale. Never used.”

Niki de Saint Phalle, because someone wore it yesterday and it’s great in every weather. Still very hot in Germany, over 30C…. Just want to drink water and sit in front of my fan

for tea for Tuesday and because it’s warming up around here.

Also because elephants! youtube somehow thinks I want to watch nothing but videos of baby elephants. They are cute, but gosh-good-golly the internet can be weird sometimes. 😉

    happy Tuesday-Bluesday to everyone!

If you love videos of elephants, have you heard about the story of two retired circus elephants Shirley and Jenny? Youtube video below. Have a tissue ready, it’s a tear jerker.

The first cases of Covid in 100 days have turned up in the community here. Disappointing, but inevitable. There will be limited restrictions in my part of the country for now at least.
I’m heading off to work shortly, supported by generous amounts of Mito EdP. I’ve got a new staff member starting today, which is not ideal timing.
Once again, I’ve got lots of NST to catch up on 🙂

More stinking hot and humid weather today, so I’m weather twin to a lot of other NSTers. However, I did have the weirdest little rain shower just pop up out of nowhere earlier this afternoon. No wind, no thunder or lightning, just rain for maybe 10 minutes.

SOTD = back in Iris Nazarena. This weather seems to call out for a quiet iris perfume right now.

And I managed to get a walk in so perhaps I am building a tolerance for the hot and humid ?? With that said, it makes me appreciate my central A/C even more!

The worst mid-Atlantic summer I can recall was in 1995. But this one is definitely up there on the “YUCK!” scale. Top 5?

SOTD Avon Rare Pearls. It was a random grab and I think I have two different editions but had no idea what it smelled like. It was an interesting trip, and I would wear it again for sure. I just had to get through blast-O-pepper-fresh freshness! That newer Avon “sandalwood” accord comes out a bit strong, but I stayed for (I used Fragrantica as my guide) a wonderful magnolia, plum, and rosewood accord in the drydown. I sort of got used to the sandalwood that is in the newer Avons, even finding it comforting. I looked up rosewood and found that what Fragrantica calls rosewood is a note in Dune, one of my top 10; I could get whiffs of that in little ol’ Rare Pearls purse spray. A fun ‘fume for a very busy day at work.

Ooh, I’ve gone hog-wild with tea purchases lately, and have built up a rather embarassingly large stash. Today is my day! (And every other day I drink tea, which is…every other day.)

I started the day wearing Eau des Merveilles – one of my “why don’t I wear this more often?”s – and ended it in Ralph Lauren Polo, after finally crossing it off my To-Buy list today. I know there are people who consider Polo dated, but my fingers are firmly in my ears around any such talk. I think it’s drop-dead gorgeous, particularly in the colder months, when its pine and tobacco accords really sing.

Hi! In Robin’s earlier post about creamsicle fragrances, she listed Fendi Theorema, so I dabbed a bit on from a sample. I enjoyed the fragrance.

I ended up going through several of the bookcases upstairs to find some older gardening books. Past-me had acquired a number of old gardening books. Just little while after I’d settled down to read to read, the lights went out. Fortunately, I still have that habit of keeping flashlights around, and I had a box of candles there, too. 🙂

I keep a small LED flashlight in my closet. That’s where it lives, unless it’s needed. Time to start looking for spare batteries for it, just in case…
