Back in the day I wore the original so much I got properly sick of it, but maybe an upgraded version could win me back — and that bottle kills.

If you wait long enough, eventually there will be a Le Male for everyone!

(Although they did one for me — Fleur du Male — and then discontinued it.)

A friend & former colleague, sadly no longer with us, wore the original JPG for Women way back when. That, along with the original Versace fragrance, were Dilys’s favourites, & you were always aware of her imminent arrival in the office – she suited both, & despite ‘less is more’ not being in her vocabulary (in any sense!) I always looked forward to her fragrant presence. Monsieur Gaultier himself appeared in the most recent episode of a BBC programme here in the UK entitled “Great Continental Railway Journeys”, hosted by a former Member of Parliament called Michael Portillo – JPG talked about seeing the Folies Bergere dancers on TV when he was 8 years old & how wonderful he thought they were, & the influence they’ve had on his style. Really interesting hearing them chat, & JPG always comes cross as a lovely & amusing man – I’m a fan of Mr Portillo, too – his many series of travel programmes (usually by rail, as he’s a massive fan of anything to do with this mode of travel & its associated history) are very popular, his penchant for brightly coloured clothing perhaps not so much with some people, though I think it’s a hoot!

It might be the sort of thing that pops up on your PBS channel or on BBC America if that channel still exists, Robin. This first episode was very interesting, not least because Michael Portillo is of Spanish heritage & his father, who was a university professor, had to leave Spain when Franco came to power as he was declared ‘an enemy of the state’ – Michael goes to the university where his father taught & sees archive papers about him – very moving story.

I will keep an eye out. BBC America still exists but has very unappealing programming. Britbox & Acorn are paid channels that carry better stuff.

I liked Le Male Essence de Parfum very much; looking forward to smelling this one.
