Thursday scent of the day 7/23

Posted by Robin on 23 July 2020 209 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Santa Maria Novella Queen's Cologne, from a decant I found hiding in an old purse. It smells shockingly good considering it's got to be at least 10 years old.

Reminder: on 7/24, wear a perfume by Zoologist, Xerjoff, Worth Paris or Yosh if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters W, X, Y or Z.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

To tell the truth, my sprayer on my discovery set sample was defective, and I barely got a spray. The first was fine, but any subsequent sprays were just drops. It has disappeared and I really didn’t get an impression of the fragrance. I finally put on some Assam of India after lunch.

Good morning all! My SOTD is AV by Adrienne Vittadini, soft and powdery. I’ve got my sneakers on and headed out the door!

Question for the perfumista hive mind – has anyone tried AV Midnight Blossom? It’s not in any of the perfume databases (Basenotes or Fragrantica). It’s been described as powdery, violet, woods…
    😀

    What a find, Robin!

I am going all green, mossy and floral with:
Lush Guardian of the Forest shower gel (cypress, oakmoss, lime are listed, plus I smell either lily-of-the-valley or gardenia in it)
Yardley Lily-of-the-valley body talc (LOTL, citrus, geranium, magnolia)
Ann Gerard Perle de Mousse perfume (EDP?) on top (LOTL, bergamot, ivy, galbanum, gardenia)

The surgery is a breeze! No sedation needed. They give you topical anesthetic, so the eye I’m numb. I was in and out in about an hour, start to finish.

They are delaying cataract surgery until maybe thanksgiving time..it is just about as easy as Deva said. But the whole process..with Covid, the goal is to delay until things are maybe safer in the fall or winter. Right now we are on the verge on another shutdown in Los Angeles and it means having someone take me and bring me home and on and on.
But I did get a new prescription and new glasses- green looks great with my gray hair.

I’m in 10 Corso Como and enjoying a rare morning with the house all to myself. Heaven. I think part of my pandemic fatigue is that I never have any time to myself anymore. I’m either at work surrounded by people, or at home surrounded by people. My family has remained healthy though, so I do try to focus on the big picture.

I’m glad you’re getting some alone time. Some of my pandemic fatigue is tied to always being in the same place (home). I mean, I like my house, but I haven’t really left it for more than an hour since March.

My friends with kids in the house — bigs, littles, and in between — are saying pretty much the same thing. They generally all have very good relationships with the kids and are happy to have them at home, but the non-stop togetherness and clamor is wearing.

I’m sampling Crazy Enough by West Third Brand for partial CP points. It’s reading as a lovely jasmine-tuberose blend on my skin. Not crazy, but extremely pleasant.

So many things to do. I do not like moving at the best of times, and pandemic moving is something else! Making a cup of tea to have a break, then back to it.

T-Rex was out on the porch this morning when she started up a fierce racket! There she was, bouncing on all fours with the force of her barks and snarls, stiff legged, every single hair standing straight up, ears back, fangs flashing, and tail high flagged! It was like she was possessed! Nope, she just caught mom bear strolling around the corner of the house. Mom bear did a 180 and casually strolled the opposite direction. She was limping, so she must have been injured, maybe by a car. I hope she does ok…?

Me too! I’m right on the BRP and people use that road, meant for minimal to moderate speeds, as a drag strip. I’m hoping she didn’t get hit by a car. People are just so careless. I’m so tempted to leave something for her to eat, but feeding wild animals is a death sentence for them. In my heart, I wish I could make sure she has adequate nutrition…also, no sign of last years cubs with her today..?

Good morning all! I’m up early today (for me). I have so many Zoologists that I’m confining myself to trying ones this week that I only have as samples, i.e., that have not previously caught my attention enough to buy in a larger size. (Zoologist has a nice-sized travel spray.) Today it’s Dragonfly. This is definitely worth revisiting. It’s just like it ought to be, airy and floating, with a shimmer of aldehydes. I’m definitely getting the almond of heliotrope with it too. There’s a very delicate floral that must be lotus flower. (I don’t think it’s peony which I would expect to be more spicy.) And something green (clover?). This is to my mind a beautifully blended scent that is pretty unusual and not like some of the more “bombastic” or “out there” Zoologist productions. (Some of which I also like.) I didn’t really like either Hummingbird or Nightingale as I found them both too sweet, but this is one that is in their ball park, so if you like those, I’d recommend giving it a try. I haven’t looked hard enough for my Dragonfly sample but I recall really liking it, a travel spray would be nice. But I really like Elephant, too and I would only buy one. Have you tried Koala yet? I’m waiting to order a sample until I decide about the travel spray! So many perfume decisions. I like Sloth a lot, too.

In Vivacious, from hajusuuri’s split. Perfect for the one day this week it’s a nice, upper 70s, non-humid day (the rest of the week looks unpleasant). On me, this is cheerful and carnationy, don’t get much violet or violet leaf, which is fine by me.

YES. Strangely, my colleagues all reported that the men in their households became engrossed as well–in my case, my 19 year old son who is hyper-judgmental and very PC insisted that we binge through two episodes at a time. Its a curiously addicting relationship reality show (I deeply loath all those Bachelor/ette show for reference). This one is painful (but less like watching a train wreck and more like listening to a drunk person at a party share their blow by blows of their worst dates) but impossible to turn off.

Got my walk in early this morning. It’s gray and drizzly and muggy which is a really nice change from blazing hot sunny and muggy.

Wearing Yes I Do. Enveloped in marshmallow-y white flower goodness.

Finished The Starless Sea. If, like me, you spent your childhood checking the backs of closets for passageways to Narnia, you will like this book. The trick is to not try and figure out where it is going, and just enjoy the ride. In the acknowledgements, the author thanks Elizabeth Barrial and Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. I’m so glad I got my bottle when I did because it was a missed opportunity on a trip to Florida that I repeatedly kicked myself

When our TJX re-opened in June, it was on clearance for $8! Funny story: the store still had all the Easter holiday decor out, like a time warp back to February.

    SOTD = Amouage Love Mimosa

From a split with Lucas and Undina! Mimosa all day❣️

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CC_igyWBIOC/?igshid=lgki01qy03qk

We had horrible thunderstorms yesterday and despite that, the air was really hot and humid this morning when I took out the trash. I am so done with this weather! I want Fall to come quickly and on the double!

In other news, I recall floragal mentioning one day for her being junkfood day or something to that effect. My contribution to that is I am incapable of throwing out junk food even if expired. I will always try it first and decide if it still tastes good and if it is, W00t!

I went to the new Sephora this morning. They have an expanded perfume section, although still not great. I was finally able to smell JM Velvet Rose and Oud. I had to get a SA to spray it on a strip. I loved it! I asked if she could spray my hand and she did from 6 feet away. She basically sprayed the air, and I had to catch it with my hand, LOL.
My sotd is Oud Bouquet because I was hoping I could convince myself it smells the same as the Jo Malone. It does not. I get mostly vanilla and incense from OB, but I got a great rose with JM.

Was in a flanker of VCA First early today, but I just replenished with Oeillet Bengale because I’ve been making a spice birthday cake and wanted something spicy.

No dinner out tonight…just too hot and humid…so I will use a grill pan to cook salmon, make fresh corn and have fresh mozzarella with heirloom tomato drizzled with peach-infused white balsamic vinegar.

Minor kerfuffle during cake baking. Power cut for about 30 seconds a little more than halfway through, and I didn’t notice the oven didn’t just go back to temp. And…while it was in the oven, something got caught behind the refrigerator crisper drawer. I had a heck of a time clearing that out….some rather loud exclamations on my part, and my husband wisely stayed silent in the other room. I don’t get angry often, and it’s most often reserved for a struggle with an inanimate object. (Why we still have a somewhat wonky, wobbly ironing board.)

But…cake is cooling on a rack. I decided to split between two 8×8 square pans and will freeze one and frost the other. With candles that spell happy birthday.

Although I followed what a commenter said in creaming the butter and sugar together first, adding eggs and vanilla and then the dry/milk alternating…which is a more traditional method. Flavor was very good. I didn’t fully adjust my timing perfectly so it was slightly overdone. I made a vanilla buttercream frosting. So…lots of butter.

Good morning all, I’ve nearly caught up on the last week’s worth of NST, and I am wishing all the best for so many of you and your friends and family. There is a lot of very difficult things happening for so many people right now.
I’m working from home today after 6 weeks back in the office. My only experience of working from home was during lockdown when most other people were too, but with about half our people in the office, being at home will be a different experience. I’ve been trying to avoid it, but do need to do the same thing my team has been doing.
I’ll go back to my practice of three samples a day, and have samples of both Hummingbird and Nightingale from Scentspirit, so will be doubly compliant 🙂

A very late reply to say I like Nightingale. I see it (or rather smell it) as a vintage type of floral, which is big plus in my view. I see people describe it as a chypre, and that seems right to me.

I’m wearing it today. I like it but I’m not sure what I actually think about it — that will take longer. I smell the saffron at the start, with a hint of bergamot or other citrus, and I definitely get that chypre base (if you like chypres, it’s great), but I’m not getting floral notes in the middle phase.

What is the schedule? For us, it depends on the state (and possibly work campus). The most ridiculous I heard was 1 week in the office and 9 weeks remote. I thought I misheard but someone confirmed. Really, what is the point of making people go into the office for a week unless they’re hoping that people will just opt to take the in office week as vacation.

We’re largely back to normal life in New Zealand, but with the borders closed. My particular organisation is a bit stuck for space because our building is being used by other parts of government. We’re also experimenting with more flexible working. It’s not a great day for being at home, we’re having hideous problems with email!

Lucky you! It’s always the simple things that cause big trouble.

Thanks for the reminder — I was wracking my brain to think of a suitable Friday scent, and when you commented, I remembered that I had a sample of Nightingale! So that’s my SOTD for today’s project.

Trayee, because the little decant was almost empty. I think it might be a tad too hot for this one today. Our apple trees in the backyard are shedding their little apples (poor pruning habits on my end – I had ambitions for an espalier but now it’s just a bit of a mess), so I’m making an apple pie with the dropped fruit.

Bucoliques de Provence as I wanted some more lavender. I love how wearable this is. Soft, gentle, unobtrusive, yet far from dull.

Haircut day today! I left about half my hair on the salon floor. They took my temperature with an IR thermometer when I arrived, and had both appointments and stylists very well spaced out. If you didn’t have a mask, they had paper ones available. I’m glad I took the plunge.

SOTD = still in Rock Crystal EdP, trying to beat the heat & humidity.

Yay! That’s how my haircut went too, I didn’t feel nervous at all. Do you like your new ‘do?

My new ‘do is the same one I’ve had for a few years. It evolves as it grows out, and suits the texture of my hair really well. But if my hair gets too long, it tangles. ☹

Big change! Are you experiencing that weird lightness, where it feels like your head is swiveling around untethered?

Yay! I’m still holding out. I’ve already cut my bangs twice and the 3rd time will likely be within the next week OR I can just schedule a haircut sometime in August. I have a lot of vacation and personal days off left and I have to take 4 weeks (and probably 2 more days, I have to check) between now and end of year and still have 2 weeks to carry over to next year.

If I start looking at the scissors in a certain way, that means I’d better make a hair appointment PRONTO! Hopefully, I won’t have to wait another 3.5 months for my next cut.

I’ve given myself 4 haircuts since January. I don’t flatter myself that it looks much like a haircut anymore but that’s okay!

I tried trimming my bangs once when I was in junior high. The results were so bad that I haven’t bothered cutting my hair since.

Fair enough! I always have my hair short and my motto “it grows back” definitely works faster at this length to salvage something resembling a style. It’s definitely NOT a style right now mind you, but hey – it’s 2020! Small potatoes ?

Today I’m in PotL Luctor et Emergo from Springpansy’s split. I enjoyed it all day at work. I just did a refresh for the short walk to our favorite restaurant. Super hot here; I love to put the pedal to the metal when wearing a new perfume. 🙂

Wore Jardin de Monsieur Li to work, to my surprise it last almost all day. I tried Zoologist Beaver when I came home. I was expecting something heavier, but it’s light and friendly. I don’t think I would call it beaver. Maybe like cottontail.

January Scent Project Selperniku Extrait today. Made pizza today as well as potato pancakes with leftover sourdough starter. Slowly digging myself out of last week’s funk with the help of slightly obscene amounts of chocolate. No regrets!

Obscene amounts of chocolate sound about right! I am pacing myself by sticking with 70% cacao bars. I can limit myself to a. few squares at a time because they’re very strong (and I love really dark chocolate). I find myself binging on toast and butter a lot — pure comfort food!

On Thursday, I wore Nicolai’s Number One Intense from a sample. Very nice! A little too much tuberose for me, that’s not a note I favor except in small doses, but Number One Intense is a lovely scent.

And for today, I’m in Zoologist’s Nightingale, from a small sample, thanks to being reminded of it by a comment above! Count me fully compliant!
