Wednesday scent of the day 7/22

Posted by Robin on 22 July 2020 219 Comments

Hump Day and Hammock Day! Also, Mango Day, and a bunch of birthdays: Oscar de la Renta, Tom Robbins, Bobby Sherman, Rufus Wainwright, Danny Glover, S.E. Hinton, Edward Hopper. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Providence Perfume Co Basil & Bartlett.

Reminder: on 7/24, wear a perfume by Zoologist, Xerjoff, Worth Paris or Yosh if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters W, X, Y or Z.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I was very surprised because it came in about 3 days. But, that’s not norm right now, for sure. Hope you get it today!

The mail is extraordinarily- I ordered a Boden package way back in June and it’s still making it’s way over. But better late then lost – I’m sure the cream will show up eventually LTSG

I always worry about delayed shipment of scented products in the summer. Makes me hesitant to order things, thinking they might be sitting somewhere hot for days.

I tried to contact Macys by phone, since I can’t find an email/online way to reach out. My wait time was over 60 minutes so I hung up. Good grief

The cynical part of my brain is telling me companies are using the pandemic for poor customer service. Just now on hold with a bank for FORTY minutes!

Yes, that is what I am worried about. It sitting on some crate baking away…

I’m waiting on an order shipped on July 8 by UPS, handed off to USPS. Not scented, though.

Given your knowledge, I bet you will know if the lotion has been improperly handled and gone off. Macy’s will need to make that right.

I’m in JD Musc Neutre from Dame. I must be anosmic to this one because it disappears completely on my skin. Too bad because the faintness I can smell is a lovely floral musk skin scent.
I had a craving for tacos last night, so we ordered take out from a farm to table restaurant a few blocks from us and omg were they delicious!?Mouth watering carnitas with portions so generous I have leftovers for lunch today.

That’s too bad about the musc. I got a sample of Mimosa Mixte. It’s very nice, but close enough to TF Violet Blonde that I don’t need it.

It is too bad.☹️I’m always in search of a good musk, and his prices are SO reasonable. $38 for 50 mls! Oh well, the search continues.

This talk about musk reminds me that I should try the Soivohle Alpha Musk perfume oil I picked up on clearance a while back. But it will be hard to pry myself away from incense right now.

Hi, if you call the online order phone number at macys, and choose the place an order option, you should get a real person that can help you with your missing package, or get you to someone who can. Also try calling later in the evening.

I’m wearing Macaque today, which so far has had my favorite opening. I get cedar, mitigated by fresh fruit, and galbanum. Looking forward to the drydown. If I like it I will say that of the three Zoologist scents that I have tried this week, this is my favorite.

So, I was rewatching Great British Bake-off (the third series we have available here, which I think is actually like the 7th), and someone made a sticky toffee pudding CAKE. It sounded lovely, but is apparently a different thing than actual sticky toffee pudding? Is the traditional form a baked/steamed pudding?

Spent last night and a good chunk of this morning in Dia woman. I went to the Sephora website yesterday and got myself an Urban Decay lipstick and a clearance lipstick. I used the free shipping code and double points code. Probably shouldn’t have but I can’t refuse double points or free shipping. I am finishing the day in no 22 edt today.

Today is a running day, so I will wait on scent until I’m back and showered. It will be something from Zoologist, as I still have the samples from trying them last year. I wore Hummingbird yesterday, which I think is pretty but doesn’t go anywhere. I like a journey with my scents.

I’m excited. A piece I wrote is printed in today’s paper. It’s an opinion piece, so I won’t detail my arguments here. But it’s fun to have a chance to share one’s thoughts with the world! Hopefully, I don’t get too many nastygrams in my email.

Thanks, yasmina! Honestly, I’m not sure what the impact of any one article can be. It would be my hope that mine, and stories like mine, inform people’s opinions and shape the conversation, but I think you never really know if it made a difference or not.

I am not sure if it is the original fragrance. I got the bottle from a NSTer two years ago, but I don’t know when she bought it. This is a tea and violet scent with a light touch of citrus.

I’m heading out into the woods today to work with some trees, so I’m sampling Arbolé Arbolé in their honor. It had been a while since I’d read a description of this one and I was expecting something in the standard warm/woody/coniferous family — instead I smell like minted anise, crushed ferns, and cold mountain air on warm stones. There’s something nose-chilling about it, the same sensation I get from Tubereuse Criminelle, and a whiff of Eau Noire.

Olay Strawberry Mint shower mousse (enabler pin to whomever mentioned this), followed by lemon coconut body lotion and copious sprays of my new Jean Naté from the fridge.

Soooo humid. I think I need to head to Whole Foods later, though. They have a few things on special I may want.

Fresh and light. In the mousse, it’s quite subtle but realistic. May be stronger in the bar sop or regular shower wash.

Love the picture of the beehive! I have been thinking about getting a beehive after I retire. We have loads and loads of rosemary plants and they are covered with bees when they bloom. Does anyone have advice on bee keeping?

Random memory… does anyone remember the old internet search tool called Ask Jeeves? Back when it was new, it would often spit out info on ‘bee keeping in New Zealand’ when it got confused 🙂

That skep is just ornamental — he says so in the flickr comments. I do think people still use straw skeps, but I don’t think they’re recommended anymore. My neighbor keeps bees in the more standard wood boxes, but I know nothing 🙂

Get a beekeeper to help you who will be willing to come out and help you along the way. It is worth asking about this at the start, even if it means phoning around and getting references. We got someone to move the hive in our watermeter into a wooden box hive and the lady said to let them settle and put the hive “extender” on once it had warmed up nicely and then to take some honey at the height of summer, leaving the bees enough time to stock up again. Long story short, we couldn’t get anyone to add the extender, apparently it is a sought after profession being called upon to move hives in meters, on public land, at schools etc. Moving hives are more profitable than garden variety beekeeping and beekeepers tend their own hives and will only come to your property to come and get your bees. After a while I got a suit and all the paraphernalia and tried to add the hive extender myself, but the lid is now glued super tight and extremely heavy. We now have very happy bees in a small wooden box and have decided to simply enjoy having bees and helping nature. We’ve put another box next to them, and hope that a new queen will move in one day. I also watch this new box like a hawk – one should not give them time to seal the hive.

Points for me today in Worth Courtesan. First whiff made me thing of vintage BaV. Dirty in the best way!

Walked very early this morning after a late night. The breeze was actually cool, and the frogs were still chirping. There was a full rainbow, and a single engine plane flew by right when I noticed the rainbow. My fanciful heart considers this a drive by from my dad. ?

Yes! We are in a subdivision that was a huge rice field many years ago. There’s a network of small lakes/ponds here that serve as the drainage system for the area. There are walking trails everywhere. We are fortunate to be here….there was water halfway up to the house during Harvey, but we didn’t flood like so many folks did.

Rose Opera (by Scent on Canvas) is a saffron nutmeg symphony that has soft and low notes of incense, and some fruit and florals (maybe rose, but a fruity rose) to perk things up. It was created by a Spanish company a while ago (2012?) and cannot be found in the US now for love or money.

Cranked up the heat again today. Was on an international Zoom meeting at 7 AM my time this morning. I think the woman participating in Indonesia was in the latest time zone– 9 PM. Two hours I sat in a proper shirt and blazer (out of sight I was in jeans and clogs, but that’s par for the course) FREEZING and drinking my coffee that had become quite cold. Now basking in the heat from our vents, I can actually smell my perfume! In Prada’s Infusion d’Oeillet in celebration because I purchased a full bottle last night. I’ve been watching Fragrancenet’s price, which got down to an all time low of $167 for 100 mls yesterday. Then had the idea to check eBay for an even grayer marker purveyor. Found the same bottle-size for $85, so it was off to the races. I bought a bunch of inexpensive minis of this a while back, and am down to the last 5 mls now.

Not me. As incoherent as I am at 7 am, I am worse in the evening. This meeting spanned several continents as it happened. There were two participants in Brazil, two in Kyrgyzstan, one in Egypt, another in Jordan, one in Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Senegal, and Mauritania… Texas, and DC–as well as Indonesia. When I have to work with people in India during business hours, that is the worst for me. India is 12 and a half hours ahead of California, and usually that means I make the call late at night at my end.

Serge Noire. Another oddity that I just like wearing.
Thank you to everyone for their Narcissus recommendations the other day. I took notes!

Serge Noire fan here *hand raises.* I dated my bottle as 2017 so as a perfumista-come-lately perhaps my bottle is a compromised reformulation. It’s lush and meditative for me!

Slept horribly last night, I have no idea why. I should have been out cold as I was so tired when I went to bed. Now I have that groggy-thinking thing going on. Also, I am sick of cooking. Wearing Delina because it was shiny and caught my eye (I have the silver travel spray).

Really gross weather day here. All sorts of weather alerts and warnings have been going off, starting about 30 minutes ago. Looks like thunderstorms are headed my way… ⚡?

SOTD = back in Rock Crystal EdP again. This might make it onto my full bottle wishlist, even if the price tag makes me flinch.

My colleagues keep Slacking me photos of their dogs and cats cowering under couches and in the crooks of arms in response to the thunder and storming in the DC metro area.

We are in the middle of a severe thunderstorm. Pretty scary. It must be going your way. Unfortunately, it is not bringing any relief from the heat and humidity. It is much muggier now!

I started hearing rumbles of thunder about 7:30. Getting lightning now, and some of it is intense enough that Spooky kitty is in hiding. ?

Poor kitty! I hope you don’t get it as bad as it is here. The intensity of this storm is unbelievable!

      Stay safe!

I grew up on the Prairies so I am used to wicked lightening storms. My Dad used to sit with us girls on the front step and watch the storms roll in. Now that I am living near the West Coast (in a semi-desert climate) we barely get any here. I really miss a good storm!

I don’t miss the blizzards, tornadoes, and hail that I grew up with, that’s for sure! Baseball- to softball-sized hailstones are truly terrifying.

I’m wearing Yosh Omniscent today. I have the fragrance oil and it’s very potent. I love this one. We have been having thunderstorms that alternate with rain and it’s incredibly muggy. Tropical storms coming to Texas this weekend. I took treats out to Mom’s place today and on the drive over saw views of fantastic thunder cloud formations all around. Thanks to everyone for your support about my writing seminar yesterday. I’ve decided my next two pieces will be about my two grandmas. It’s a memoir class but people do many different things. One woman wrote hers all as a parody or take-off on Poe’s The Raven! So funny! Mine was so ultra-serious that I decided to try for something lighter next time.

Today I’m trying Zoologist Bat 2020. It’s quite a real cave like scent. It reminds me of planting corn fields in the mud or like during a rain after the earth and rocks have baked for days. I like the dry down.

I’ll admit I’ve been a bit scared to try Bat, having spent enough time in caves and around actual bats to know that they don’t really smell well…

I’ve heard the original is much stronger than this one. A lot of people get fruit in the 2020 version, but I didn’t. After a while it smelled like wet teak patio furniture which was weirdly comforting.
