Monday scent of the day 7/20

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2020 299 Comments

It's Monday and International Chess Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

We are on day 3 of excessive heat warnings. I'm running late, and a bit groggy, and my computer is acting up: not a happy Monday combination! I'm in Thierry Mugler Cologne.

Reminder: on 7/24, wear a perfume by Zoologist, Xerjoff, Worth Paris or Yosh if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters W, X, Y or Z.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Terre d’Hermès
    Perfect for this weather today…

Non perfume related question, can anyone recommend a thermos for coffee that does not leak and keep things hot?

        Ciao Deva-
So it looks like it started out with UPS and now it in the hands of USPS. So they have accepted the package and there is no further up date beyond that..
Hopefully today or tomorrow there will be some movement.
How can they deprive me of my cream? Don’t they know who I am? HA!

In my experience, it can take a week for the post office to deliver after they get the handoff from UPS. I’m waiting for something myself and my guess is I won’t see it until later this week. It goes into this USPS black hole, since it doesn’t have their tracking #.

Oh yes! There are times when his bottle mysteriously disappears….
He has vintage bottles of RL’s Safari and Christian Dior’s Fahrenheit that I sneak spritzes from.
Both original bottles back from when they were first released. He teases me that he’s going to give them away. 😯

I use a Contigo as well but only for cold drinks mainly because I don’t trust plastic and rubber to hold up well for hot beverages. That said, we’re I to be looking for a container suitable for hot and cold, I would try to find one with only stainless steel and glass parts with an opening that would not burn my lips. The container should also be wide enough to fit my hand to be able to wash it without a bottle brush.

I have a Yeti and a Hydroflask – husband appropriated Yeti and used it for coffee, and now I can’t use it for tea anymore. I think they do equally well with keeping things hot, but the Yeti is wider and the lid doesn’t close all the way, so you can’t put it upside down or shake it around (should you want to do that). But – cleaning it is easier, and I believe Yeti says dishwasher is ok, whereas Hydroflask says handwash. My main beef with the Yeti was that it does not fit into my cupholder in the car. However, I feel I have to be more careful in screwing the lid onto the Hydroflask (Yeti is more of a push-in lid?). Lastly, Yeti comes in all stainless, I believe, H. does not. Pricewise, about the same, and roughly $25-30.

After going back to Florida and rescuing 6 full bottles from my refrigerator, I realized I needed to find a larger perfume storage box…I’m not happy about this and may end up losing a couple full bottles of scents I don’t use that often.

Thank you for your concern, Deva. The protests are sticking to a few small areas here in Portland. I think much of the media coverage is overstating the unrest, and I wonder at the inconsistencies in how protestors are being portrayed by different media sources. We live on a busy street that heads directly downtown, near where protesters often congregage before they head downtown. We have seen no violence, no out of control behavior, and feel very safe even when marchers are going past our property (which happens semi-regularly).

OTOH, I have heard from neighbors who have changed their after-dark walking choices for fear of increases in uncertainty caused by these actions by federal agents. News reports about federal agents picking people up off the street in unmarked vans is scary.

My focus of concern was the governmental actions against those peaceful protesters, as you mentioned. I don’t want to cross the NST guidelines for commenting, but unmarked vans, unidentified-government backed “police” action is my worry. I’m glad you’re feeling safe

I recently taught my other half to play rummy 500, he has never been into cards but it something fun for us to do when the kids to go to bed.
My grandmother taught me how to play, and when I was young I would spend my summers with her in Florida and that’s what we would do in the afternoon when it was too hot to be outside.
She instilled in me also the love of books and reading, and when we didn’t feel like playing cards we would lounge and read in the afternoon. I have to say, I think when I look back on it, my grandmother gave me some books that were probably too mature for my age. Stuff that she had read and she would just tell me to help myself to whatever I wanted.

My family played Risk a lot, especially up at our cabin. I also went through a period of playing Star Wars Monopoly with friends about 23 years ago.

Best, though, was playing Mystery Date on New Year’s Eve about 18 years ago. Crying with laughter at the cheesiness.

Carcassone looks fascinating. I’m afraid it would devolve into a cutthroat situation pretty soon, however, since the hubs is seriously competitive!

My sister and I play what I call “girl rules”…try to win, but don’t gratuitously block the other person — or maybe another way to put it is try to do well but don’t try to make the other person do poorly. Competitive but nice about it. My husband is literally incapable of playing that way and also does not enjoy the game as much as I do.

Nice! I have never been into chess but the family produced an Oregon State champion several times over and a national master who was on his way to be another type of master (or whatever next echelon is in the world of chess) until he was sidelined and couldn’t travel safely to tournaments for health reasons.

I didn’t have much for last week’s CP and nothing at all for this week, but am trying out a sample from a new- to- me brand.
Pink Heart from Map of the Heart. Starts out quite sweet, but it has a nice dry down of tobacco and sandalwood. I’m looking at perfumes with Narcissus: was interested in MM Romanza and Pink Heart supposedly has narcissus absolute. Have a good week!

Portland is all fine unless you head for the two hotspots after about 11 pm.

Happy Monday! My SOTD is one (small) spritz of Dior’s Addict. I love it but it blooms like crazy on me.

Congratulations to Clueless, on it’s 25th anniversary. I learned something new, the movie is based on Jane Austin’s Emma (who knew?). This means I’ll have to rewatch the movie and read the novel! My class ends tonight so I’ll get started asap to catch up on my reading list!
Recovering from a hike-filled weekend. The hubby and I hiked through the Presidio, had a lovely (distanced) picnic al fresco with friends overlooking the GG bridge.
Now it’s running shoes on, and out the door for a four mile walk! 🙂

Clueless! Blast from the past! I had so much fun with that movie. If you want to go all out on Emma things, there is also a new Emma version out, which I haven’t seen yet. My favourite Emma production is the BBC mini-series from 2009 with Romola Garai as Emma.

Clueless is a really well done interpretation of Emma. I haven’t read the book…need to put it on my list.

I have a hankering to watch A Room With a View again. I’ve been listening to it via Audible, and it’s so subtly satirical and with such arch observations.

Another beautifully-paced movie is Enchanged April, with Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, and Alfred Molina.

Oh oh oh — jumping in to second the rec of Enchanted April. It is the movie I watch whenever I need to feel better about the world. I bought it on DVD and have a digital download on my iPad — I love it that much. I would also recommend the novel on which it’s based — very short, but has a philosophical element that is not really part of the film. (And the plot is slightly different, in a way that may disappoint those of us who believe the film to be perfect in every way.)

Perris Mandarino di Sicilia – which is nice. If didn’t own any other citrusy colognes this might be a contender since I do enjoy mandarine and don’t find it used much. But as it is I will happily spritz through tester and be done with it.

Ordered some more samples from Perris today, the new JC Ellena scents Lavande Romaine and Mimosa Tanneron. Lavender and Mimosa are in my top notes, so very hopeful ?

A tough question indeed but I would probably choose Micallef Note Vanillee which is perhaps the best boozy, spicy vanilla to be had out there. I have the old/original bottle and I believe the juice in the new bottle has been reformulated sadly.

        What vanilla would you rescue?

Sampling BK’s Woman in Gold (Dusk till Dawn)– which is a little weird. I keep expecting it to blossom into a proper oud, or even rounding out with a hint of cumin (a perfume note that I am very leery of) but it stays too sweet and high pitched for me–never grounded in anything. It is the kind of vanilla I really do not like—too sweet without the rum.

I can imagine smelling this in the wild, and thinking someone was wearing a lovely, well-crafted and expensive perfume. But as something to smell on myself–not my cuppa.

This week, it will be easy for me to stick to the CP with Zoologist scents. I didn’t remember what the CP was, though, so I’m wearing Brin de Reglisse, because I’m on something like Day 130 of sleeping poorly, and my body is honestly sick of this nonsense.

On another note, I appear to have developed face wrinkles. One side of my face has that groove running from below my nose past the side of my lips and down to just above my chin. You know the one. (It is possible the other side has grown this wrinkle too, but I just can’t see it because of the angle of sunlight). So I’m in the best shape of my life with no one to show off for, and by the time anyone does see me, I’ll be covered in wrinkles. Great.

Interesting thought. Yes, the wrinkles are indeed more prominent on the side I sleep on more. I use a silk pillowcase (to be nice to my hair, since the humidity out in my part of CA is so low). Is there some kind of pillowcase that’s extra bad or extra good for wrinkles?

I am more lazy than I am vain 🙂 and I have enough trouble sleeping in any configuration my body pleases that I won’t be able to restrict myself to back-only sleeping. I guess I’ll just have to (1) look into retinol and (2) accept that the left side of my face will be extra-wrinkly. But thank you for sharing!

Silk pillowcases are good but it has to be the shiny slippery kind (if you wore it and pitted your body against a body sized pillow case, you would slide off). Or, use high thread count cotton cases that look like satin. Also, always use sunscreen. If you get a white cast from the higher SPF, try mixing with a primer to smooth it out and you don’t even have to rub it in because it’s all on the surface that really counts anyway. If mixing, try to use the same brand. La Mer works for me and I am sticking with it.

I’ve never tried La Mer, but am a big fan of LaRoche-Posay (the mineral 50 SPF). I also like Unseen Sunscreen (SuperGoop), which is only SOF 40, but fine for most of the year here in the Finger Lakes where 1) we get fewer hours of sunlight per year than Seattle (true of my town, perhaps not true of all FL) and 2) in normal times, I am not outdoors much M-F.

Seconding the advice about sunscreen. I’ve noticed some crepe-y skin on the back of my hands that is probably due to sun exposure.

I’m a tea rose and lily bomb in Yosh Sottile. Gotta be careful with this one. Should try layering it with something to crisp it up…it veers into cloying. (My usual layering scent is Aliage…it greens everything up.)

The husband’s birthday is later this week. We pretty much already know that a dinner out is unlikely. He hates the heat, so sitting outside in this weather is a Non-starter. I will bake a cake but dinner itself is a question mark…he’s not a happy camper.

My husband’s birthday was a month or so back, and we BBQd some things and had a couple friends over, outside, at a safe distance. Oh, and I surprised him by covering the dining room with streamers, balloons, and other silly birthday regalia. It made it feel more special, which seemed especially needed–he turned 40 and it’s been such a bummer of a year in so many respects.

Fascinating to see all of the outdoor dinning going on in the city especially where cars normally park. I wonder how the city is dealing with this especially the liability issue. Folks are practically sitting to eat in the street!

Live Deva, I’m in Bruno Fazzolari’s Au Dela Narcisse. It’s gorgeous, and the favorite of my 3 that I tried through hajusuuri’s fun partnering project for 3 Fzotic samples.

I do have some ivintage Worth Je Reviens for the CP – my old signature from the 1970s although I think this bottle is from a bit later. But we’re camping again this weekend so I’ll wear it tomorrow to be with you all in spirit!

Hmmm. That should be vintage, not ivintage. And not that I couldn’t wear it camping which would be a fun juxtaposition, I just don’t want to bring my vintage bottle along in case anything happened to it. 😉

Dune again today. I wasn’t done with it, yet.
It’s getting hotter for us this week, so naturally, I’m roasting a turkey today. I’ve found turkeys to be very reassuring during this period of intermittent food scarcity. 20 pounds of food, sitting there in my freezer, anytime I might need it. It’s my emotional support poultry. ?

    In other news, COVIDIOCY!
    1) I was at the post office on Saturday afternoon. On a good day, there are 2 postal worker stations. This woman with her chin covering, pretty much held one of the counters captive. I’m glad I was at the tail end of the debacle where she had 121 (not a typo), that had to be individually weighed and stamped. So, I fault her and I fault the post office manager for not adjusting the service counter protocol. If there ever was a justifiable COVID-rage, this would be one of them.

    2) Businesses have different ways of determining how and where best to place the plexiglass barriers. At a bubble tea shop within a shop, there was plexiglass in front of the cashier / order taker. Practically, no one I’ve seen stands in front of it to talk. Instead, they move to the side where the completed orders are held and speak to the cashier from that wide-open space. What’s the point?

    Done, for now …

Some days, nothing goes right. Yes, Floris made it very disctintive, not jasmin-like at all, very original. I thought it was discontinued but was told by a British perfumista that you can still obtain it from the flagship store but you have to ask, they don’t display it, not sure why.

Rose, Wood, vanilla, and a calm warmth. That first hour though almost made it a scrubber. I said petroleum, she said industrial note. His packaging is superb, though.

Same horrible weather for me as Robin, hajusuuri, pl67, LTSG, and quite a few others have. I am sad and lethargic today.

So, here’s what has happened with the wedding so far, based on the info I have. Please bear in mind my data is not complete, and I have my own biases.

The bride & groom approached someone to officiate at their ceremony, which was scheduled to take place in December. The would-be officiant was not comfortable with the idea and declined. I figured that was the end of it. Nope.

This was the guest I commented about over the weekend. His concerns about CV-19 exposure are entirely valid. However, I feel that the way he expressed his point of view was very inflammatory. One of the bridesmaids enthusiastically seconded his manifesto. This particular bridesmaid is married to the best man. Tempers got heated, words were exchanged, and the best man stepped back from his role. Then another groomsman withdrew. The bride ended up telling said bridesmaid that she was no longer part of the bridal party. Loads of hurt feelings all around, and damaged friendships. I’m pretty sure some of those friendships won’t survive.

Some of this might have been prevented by the bride and groom telling people that they were also looking into virtual options at this time. From what I have heard, this did not happen. I asked the bride recently (before all this blew up): what contingencies do you have if things get really bad re: COVID? I assumed that other people would have done the same thing if they were uncomfortable with the situation. Stupid me.

So the current situation is this: the physical ceremony has been postponed. To when is an open question. Apologies have been offered by some of the principals involved, with varying degrees of success or lack thereof. It sounds like some kind of remote or virtual wedding will take place.

I’ve condensed the story to keep my post to a reasonable length. Thanks for letting me vent, Robin.

SOTD = Heely Eau Sacree, from the sample stash. Incense to try and calm down.

Wow, this all sounds pretty intense!
I feel bad for the best man, because no matter what his feelings are, he has to go along with his wife. I hope the friendship can be saved.

Yeah, me too lillyjo. The best man is definitely caught in a no-win situation. He and the groom have been friends for over 30 years.

Oh boy. What was supposed to be a happy occasion got turned on its head. I’ll be a Debbie-downer and say that these things usually have other underlying contributing factors but I hope I’m wrong. I’m sorry for what you’re going through.

I think a lot of it is CV-19 fear and lack of communication. Or maybe people just didn’t want to hear certain things until it all blew up.

Wow. I’m so sorry for the bride and groom trying to balance all this. It’s a stressful time at best, and trying to plan around COVID adds to that.

To my mind, there’s no excuse for a guest to pitch a fit. Just decline to attend if you are uncomfortable. It’s not about you.

Different, obviously, for wedding party. But sympathy and kindness toward the couple is necessary.

Is city hall an option? If they want to make it official?
..then they can throw a reception anytime they want.

City Hall or something like that is an option, as is a virtual ceremony. And yes, you are correct in assuming that the couple do want to make it official.

I see I have lots of beautiful smelling company for the heatwave! So in a pique of perfume perversity, I sprayed several squirts of Feminite du Bois all over to see if maybe I liked it in hot weather. Nope. There is a note in the base of this that I just do not like. I wish I could describe it better. I have only encountered it in Serge Lutens fragrances, so at least I know how to avoid it.

It is not. It is almost like anise crossed with cinnamon and a good amount of sweaty polyester. It has the carry of a resin but not a real one. Now, I normally do not mind a bit of cinnamon and I love anise. It is funny that you mentioned the urine note. That is actually how I tell if a perfume has real sandalwood or not. If it is present, it is the real deal.

I find a urine note in lots of “woods” based scents. I always thought it was the cedar, but maybe it’s the sandalwood?

          Sweaty polyester sounds bad.

I think that some molecule in wood resins reads this way. I really wish I had a chemistry degree sometimes! And also as pickles. Salty, vaguely vinegary.

Hello! I’ve just been trying to stay in the house, caught in the same heatwave as Jalapeno and other relatively local peeps. (*waves*) As long as they’re getting enough water, the jasmines, heliotropes and lantana seem to be very happy with the extremely hot weather. I think lantana is kind of a weed down in the deep South of the U.S.

Lantana is definitely native in SE Texas. Once you plant it, it’s around for as long as you want it to be around. It’s not like mint…you can dig it up and get rid of it if you want to, but it’s pretty and comes back every spring.
Stay safe in the cool, neyronrose! ?

Yes, I think it’s pretty. 🙂 Even on the windowsill during the winter, it was flowering now and then, and then it had several clusters of flowers when I put it out. 🙂

So it’s more of a pretty wildflower, then, that people like to have. 🙂

I’m trying to stay cool. I got enough food on my last grocery store run that I (hopefully) shouldn’t have to go out for a couple more days. And I’d stocked up on rice and beans somewhere in mid-March, when Pennsylvania started to shut down non-essential businesses. This has proved useful. 🙂 The first story of the house stays much cooler than the second story, so I’ve been sleeping on the couch downstairs on those nights where the temperature has stayed pretty high.

Well, I’ve been all over the place today as far as fragrance is concerned.
    1. Dog walk = JHAG Sunny Side Up sample, just okay
    2. Bruno Fazzolari sample from Scentbridge, with scent partner Calypso = Zdravetz, not for me. Started off smelling like glue and various industrial fluids and faded, thankfully, to a vague vanilla.
    3. SOTE = Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit layered over Bruno’s Vetiverissimo, actually very nice. It sounds weird, but really works!

SotD Yosh Sottile 1.61. So fresh it almost made me feel like it wasn’t a heatwave.

4 hours of Zoom today (blergh).

Tried a friend’s recipe for broccoli and edamame soba noodle salad with a soft boiled egg for dinner, and it was DELICIOUS.

Looking forward to XYZ week as I have a few Zoologist samples! And can wear Hyrax when I go grocery shopping to force people to socially distance ?
