Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-July 2020

Posted by Robin on 18 July 2020 358 Comments

Saturday is Mandela Day, and Sunday is Ice Cream Day. RIP John Lewis.

We're soldiering on with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you've got in an online-shopping cart right now, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Note: shown is "Jeni’s favorite flavor of all time! ORANGE BLOSSOM CHIFFON. It’s like the greatest push pop you’ve ever had. Made with tangerine and orange flowers, fresh buttermilk and yogurt. Sweet, tart, creamy beyond words, and magically light as air." This spring they also had Osmanthus & Blackberry Crackle and Cocoa Curry Coco.

Ice cream and I go way back. It’s a true, long lasting love that’s unshakable. So solid, I wouldn’t be surprised if we died holding hands. ?

Woke up in Farmacia SS Anunnziata dal 1561 Vaniglia Del Madagascar (What a mouthful!) and think I’ll keep it going for the rest of the day.

Thanks for all the good wishes yesterday regarding the sale of my house. Now, when people mistake me for a homeless person in my baggy jeans and flannel shirt, (as has happened many times before?) I’ll feel like less of a fraud. People assume a lot and I hate to disappoint them.

No! Is it missing or just delayed? I hope you get it soon. Should we send out an APB? This is serious… will they send you a replacement?

I’ve been keeping mine in the fridge for a fragrant cool down! Delicious ?

You ordered from Macy’s right? Last time I ordered from them it took about 3 weeks, and I never got a notification. It just showed up.

            Yes
Ok, this is probably the situation then with Macy’s
I also ordered sheets from them last month and they showed up with in the week.
I hope my Shalimar is not sitting in the heat somewhere ?

Deva, for some reason, I often debate my last meal on earth ( maybe because I grew up in a family funeral home business?)
And have this combo of what needs to be the last taste. Pizza, French fries or ice cream. Mmmm tough choice.

Favorite memory of ice cream…the stop at Howard Johnson’s on the New Jersey turnpike. Peppermint for me, pistachio for my sister.
Same station wagon with no ac covered in sand from jersey shore.
Today post shower, going to go with Chinatown again.
I have Eve in my shopping cart, but just got the electric bill so it will sit there a while longer.

I has a mani pedi appointment for today, but looks like I’ll be doing my own later.

Well, as far as last meal is concerned, eat all three, in vast quantities!

Are you in southern Ca.? Doing your own mani/pedi is the smart thing to do right now. Groomed nails are very pretty but no one will notice if you’re 6ft under…

I hope your electric bill is manageable so you can pull the trigger on Eve.

        I love (most)
Of my childhood memories! Happy to hear you’re having some yourself✌?

I don’t think my last meal, if I knew it was that, would be that balanced! I keep thinking about strawberry shortcake, maple buttermilk bars, and chocolate cake with orange curd. I’d be hard-pressed to choose only one dessert!

I’m in the last of my California Reverie decant. As someone who doesn’t like florals, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I have a couple more samples from Dame’s JD line on their way to me, tracking says they should be here Monday.
We have a heat advisory for today with temps into the 90’s and high humidity. I’ll definitely be spending the day in the ac. It’s currently overcast and I’m feeling quite melancholy as I watch old Pearl Jam videos on YouTube.

Ah yes…Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, that voice! Gone way too soon.?We saw them that year too. One of my favorite memories…. of the crowd going wild when they took the stage and literally ripping up the sod on the hill that led down to the stage and throwing it. I had it everywhere, in my hair, my sandals, lol. Good times.

Correction…just checked and I actually got Singularity which I haven’t tried yet. I did try Duality which was nice but not me somehow and I included w/ a Swapmeet package to another NSTer I think. The JD line has a vintage feel and is so reasonably priced. I don’t see Singularity on Fragrantica for some reason so I can’t pour over the reviews but will when I when I try it.??

Over the last few days I’ve been testing various citrus fragrances but none of them has really charmed me to make me go and buy it. So for now Ormaie Les Brumes is still a top contender.

Did 33 km bike ride early in the afternoon. Now – post shower and post dinner I’m wearing VC&A California Reverie.

    Happy weekend to all!

There are many. Paris-Deauville, Prada Infusion de Mandarine or Atelier Cologne Clementine California are great.
Not long ago I thunked my bottle of Eau des Sens and wanted to add something new and refreshing to my collection in its place.

It was the first time I was in Trader Joes in years! I didn’t know where anything was and didn’t know exactly what I wanted. I got stuck in the soap, shampoo, toothpaste aisle trying to quickly grab things for myself and the minis but I guess I wasn’t moving fast enough and people started yelling at me!! Then one person said, just pass her, so they all did. LOL ?. I don’t think that I need to be rushed and end up buying the wrong items because I didn’t have time to properly examine them. Needless to say I am NOT going back.

I’m wearing Arielle Shoshana’s Saturday because it’s Saturday. And because it smells really good!

A big branch broke off one of our pecan trees last night and fell in the backyard. Our dog is so happy – she loves branches and sticks. I’m pretty sure she thinks it came from dog heaven.

In Amouage Epic right now. I spent the morning on the phone with the dentist’s office. I can’t seem to get an appointment right now. Ever since things started opening back up, every one is making appointments. At this point, if it isn’t infected and I a not in pain, it is going to wait a couple more weeks. The thing seems to be breaking apart a little more and lost a part of tooth. I have no idea what happened with my day thus far. I am just going to be careful at this point.

Half my problem is that there are no dentists near by me that accepts my insurance and not being able to drive makes it harder on me. What is near me, I have to wait 2 weeks. I would rather make an appointment for Friday to get it done. Eventually, I will figure it out. Living in a rural area sucks when you don’t drive.

    Morning all!
I’m wearing Pierre Bourdon’s La Fin d’un Été and loving it as much as ever.

I have a split opportunity announcement: a brand new 15 mL travel spray of Trayee (Neela Vermeire Creations). I’ve just ordered the Take Two package which comes with 2 x 15 mL bottles (each in its own box) from Luckyscent. I do not need both, so one is up for grabs.
The total cost was $125, so figure half that plus shipping.
If interested please dibs here and email me at arzeznik in the land of comcast with a dot and a net for further info.

    Wishing everybody a great weekend!

I am so intrigued by your SOTD. Angela reviewed it a couple of years also snd really liked (and bought) it. But she said at the time “as far as I know only one store in the world carries them: the Astier de Villatte on rue de Tournon in Paris.” Is that how you got yours or is there wider distribution now?

Very disappointing, I’m sure, to have to postpone the trip. I’m in the same boat, had a France trip planned for May this year. Hopefully we both get to go next year. Or whenever things calm down enough to make travel safe again.
I’m not sure what factors contributed to the apparent demise of his entire line of perfumes (I think he launched five of them in 2015).
I remember going into the shop looking for Sous Le Magnolias, which won high praise from Austenfan. I had not even heard of La Fin D’un Été. They were already completely out of the Magnolias but encouraged me to try LFDE, with which I fell in love immediately. It was after that I discovered Angela’s review. Had I known it would be discontinued I would have bought two bottles.
Anyway, I can send you a sample if you’d like. You can contact me at the address above.

It’s good. I’m not drawn to leather although there are a select few I really like. This one reminds me of Stash. It starts out dry but then develops that spicy pickle vibe which I loved in Stash. At least that’s what MY nose is smelling ?

Finished trying out the Centauri samples. Proxima was fruity but happily not ozonic, Gaea probably the dirt and wormwood, and Dendera a dry incense. The latter two remind me of the Slumberhouse line, so frankly quite dude. None will be for me, but an enjoyable scent experience/virtual trip, especially since I am unlikely to be visiting, say, Egypt anytime soon.

SOTM is coffee with a hint of skyrocket juniper (which I’m trying to save in the side yard at the moment). I’ll find something more appropriate after my shower.

Ice cream! When we moved last year, one of the few truly “downgraded” things about the new locale is the local ice cream shop. We have a place around the corner with very fancy names, small serving sizes, and honestly, just meh ice cream. The old neighborhood did it right, with generous servings and creative, but not too froo froo, flavors. I am quite lactose intolerant, and they have an entire case (8 flavors on rotation) of lactose-free treats for me to consider! In our humble opinions, this place rivals the much more famous, and famously long-lined, Salt and Straw.

Chanel 19 Poudre. I was up and out the door early – got groceries with only about 5 other shoppers, then did my 3 mile walk. I picked up some Swedish Sea Salt soap on sale at the store as a treat.

And now ☕️ and local blueberries on the deck (which is also a treat) and as a further treat, son and I are planning to make homemade brown sugar ice cream in honor of National Ice Cream Day.

Rainy all weekend here in Miami, so more sheltering-in-place at home.

I am considering moving my current WFH desk and monitor from the living room (no privacy) to the bedroom. Requires rearranging the entire bedroom, emptying a bookcase and moving it and restacking it, buying a new desk @ IKEA (do I want to go to an IKEA on a Saturday…not sure) and then sort of figuring out how I am going to rearrange the big empty space in the living room. Wish me luck!

I am scentless at the moment but last night I wore the dwindling drops of Aedes Copal Azur and OMG I really want more of this. I heard it’s been officially disco’d. Is that true? It’s one of Duchaufour’s best incense scents. To quote Robin’s NST review: “Verdict: I love Copal Azur. It’s my favorite of what Aedes has done so far, and I’ve liked them all. It went right on my buy list, but for me the price and size of the full bottle (the packaging is admittedly gorgeous) is a major disincentive. If I’m smart, I’ll never buy 100 ml of anything ever again. What we really need is a coffret with travel sizes of all four, or alternatively, to be allowed to mix and match the purse spray refill sets. I’d buy one right away.”

Jealous of my sister in CA, who let me know she’s been sitting out on her deck since very early this morning in mid 60s weather. Of course, her high temp will be 30 degrees warmer than that this afternoon….

Did some spritzes of the husband’s At the Beach 1966, but I wasn’t getting much, so I grabbed his Bergamote Calabria and sprayed generously. He’s making some split pea soup today, so he made a quick trip downstairs to get some supplies. Proclaimed it “truly awful” outside. I looked at temps, and it doesn’t seem that bad to me. Hot but not hideous.

On my way out to get a new AC. The one in my bedroom decided to die around 1am this morning and needless to say I couldn’t sleep well for the rest of the night, despite having 2 fans running. Feeling drained and sleepy. Coffee now and ice cream later to the rescue!

I just sprayed lavishly on Jean Nate for my venture outside. We have a heat wave starting today and until Thursday with temps in the mid 90’s and high humidity. Not a joke!. After I am back home I will wear Chanel Paris-Deauville and will relax with a glass of beer.

I’m wearing my sample of Clinique aromatics in white and enjoying it.
I do think it is a very fine white floral but it does lack the sheer magic of aromatics elixir. Looking at it online, I do think it is a bit expensive for a beauty brand fragrance and a flanker so I don’t think I’ll ever go full bottle.

Coupled with Deva, we’ve been going house hunting, in contrast we’ve been dressing ourselves up a bit to look like financially viable First time buyers! It’s funny isn’t it?

Happy Saturday! I’m in Corpse Reviver, from the Bruno Fazzolari Scentbridge program, spearheaded by hajusuuri. It is a big gourmand, just like the description card says, but not sweet in the typical gourmand manner. Whiskey, anise and rosemary, with immortelle and espresso bring up the rear. Maybe it’s the dark chocolate that I’m smelling, and not the espresso. Then again, I just had a piece of banana cake with espresso cream cheese frosting, so who knows. ?
I used a tiny spritz, which was plenty!

It’s easy! Just add a teaspoon of espresso powder to whatever cream cheese frosting recipe you use and keep adding/taste testing until you reach the state of alertness you desire. ?

I split this purchase with Nancy and we’re trying our three scents in alphabetical order. I liked the Corpse Reviver more than she did. I got LOTS of immortelle and dark chocolate and a bit of anise. Not sure about the civet but I think so. It immediately reminded me of T-Rex, and lo and behold, same perfumer. I told Nancy it’s like a Serge on steroids. I like it but it’s not love.

When I woke up I had a stomach ache and have had little appetite all day. Feeling a little worried here. ?

Back home from our mini vacation. I blasted myself with La Pausa first thing this morning. It’s pretty hot out there and it’s going to be a toasty week coming up.

My zinnias and lavateras that were planted from seed are blooming like crazy now. So are the cosmos. I think next year I will plant from seed again since it worked out pretty well for the first time. We ate all the arugula, radishes and lettuce so far; more are replanted for round 2. The carrots and volunteer tomatoes have a way to go yet.

Pamplelune today from an old mini dabber that comes in the 4 pack you find in duty free like the one below. Haven’t worn this forever…SO good. 🙂

There are some strong feelings on Fragrantica on this one but I get no urine.?

I love duty free. I used to think if the world was going to end…duty free would be the place to be. Perfume, makeup, booze, cigarettes, chocolate and other luxury goods.♥️

I rely on my “teacher look” quite a bit, which is definitely a subset of stink-eye. I’ve been told I give kids my teacher look in public all the time, but I’m not aware I’m doing it.

OTOH, I’ve totally been “that lady” who corrects other people’s children in public, so I guess I’m not totally ignorant of my infractions!

Your anecdote should be funny in a gross way but it’s not. I really wonder why some people feel so entitled? I had a situation at a grocery store check out a few weeks ago. Someone who was not wearing a mask stood much too close for my comfort. I asked him politely to back up a little and he replied “I’m a rebel. Besides, you’re wearing a mask so you are protected.” I did’t even respond. I just turned around and asked asked the cashier to call a manager. He disappeared pretty quickly. ?

SOTD ended up being Vepres Sicilliennes. I smell like classy fruit (apricot?) and flowers.

Well, in the current heat and humidity, I decided the hair on the back of my neck had to go, and I cut it off. Spent nearly two hours looking into a mirror reflecting the mirror across the room, but I think it turned out ok. It went from just above my shoulders to just about ears-length. I’m sure I’ll find bits that need fixing, but I’m pretty pleased that it worked ok!

So glad I have NST as a refuge! There is wedding DRAMA today!

One of the potential guests is making a huge stink about how unsafe and unethical it is for the engaged couple to even be THINKING of having their ceremony in December. It is shaping up to be a poop hurricane… As the Maid/Matron of Honor, I know a bit about alternate plans and contingencies in the works. The bride and groom are not unreasonable people. I could see a friendship ending from all this.

SOTD = AS Saturday again. I wish I had blind bought one of those 10mL bottles when they were available. All I am seeing now are the 50mL bottles and samples on Ari’s website.

I haven’t really been wearing perfume lately. We’re in another heat wave here. I’d forgotten that I’d done a somewhat distanced order of irises, but got them today.

In a relatively normal year, the Delaware Valley Iris Society would have had their iris sale at the Jenkins Arboretum, but Arboretum things were canceled this year. This is apparently another thing the Iris Society does, selling a limited number of irises from the garden of an iris-lover who lives in the area of Penn State’s Main Campus.

I’d ordered a few historic irises, including ‘Odoratissima.’ With some luck, I’ll let you know in the spring what I think about that one. A lovely iris society person who lives in this area of southeastern Pennsylvania brought the irises I’d ordered down to me. Mom was saying that she didn’t see how Penn State’s “Happy Valley” would be counted as part of the Delaware Valley, but somehow there were people willing to transport the rhizomes here and there.

Also, bulb catalogs have been calling my name, and I’ve ordered a good number of spring-blooming bulbs to be delivered this fall. I’m more of an instant-gratification sort of person, but I guess now’s the time I have hope that I’ll get them planted soon after they arrive in October. We’ll see how ambitious I feel in October. lol

Irises are beautiful. I planted some this year as well. My mother has an old fashioned variety that smell grapey when they bloom. I keep forgetting to dig a few up.

Make a note to yourself? They can be dug up in the spring before they bloom if they can be replanted quickly, and July seems to be the traditional time to transplant irises. I’ve been trying to collect varieties with scented flowers in the past couple of years. I think ‘Caprice’ is an iris that’s notable for having flowers that smell like Concord grapes. The flowers are purple, if I remember correctly.

I keep a running set of garden notes on my iPad, organized by month. Sometimes I just note what is in bloom. Other times it’s care reminders. Like, I bought a clematis this year, and it’s the type that’s supposed to be trimmed before new growth (since that’s where flowers will be). I can write that into my notes, a reminder late this fall to trim it, and then I don’t have to rely on my memory. Well, I have to remember to check my garden notes, but that seems less daunting!

          • neyronrose says:
            19 July 2020 at 7:09 pm

Correcting myself: ‘Caprice’ is fragrant, but the flowers are a deep rose color. There are also irises with fragrant purple flowers.

          • neyronrose says:
            19 July 2020 at 7:22 pm

Keeping notes on an iPad sounds like it would be a pretty good way to keep track. 🙂 I type up notes here and there. I know the once-blooming roses are supposed to be pruned after they bloom. Usually I end up trying to take dead canes out in the spring.

I love bulb catalogs, but somehow I any year I order bulbs, I always end up with so many more than I thought I’d ordered! I don’t know if I accidentally order from more than one catalog, or I order more later, and I forgot, but I always end up with hundreds of them that I just start sticking anywhere in the ground that I can!

I’ve done both those things, I’m pretty sure. 🙂 Some of the garden experts who are way more organized than I will ever be suggest that one should have a hole already dug and designated for a specific plant many months before you actually get the plant. Have I *ever* done that? Of course not. lol!

I just try to figure it out when the bulbs come, where I might possibly find room for them. Oh, well. They still look pretty. 🙂

Oh my. I would never succeed at that strategy! For one, I’d never remember what each hole was for, and for another, I like a more crammed, cottage-garden style, and there’d be holes right next to plants that take over in the summer. I don’t think they’d be happy with their roots exposed!

I’m sure yours are lovely, wherever they end up. 😀

We have marionberries in Oregon (the PNW), and they are a cross between raspberries and blackberries, I believe. However, they LOOK like blackberries–dark blue-purple–but have slightly smaller, uh, bubbles? Not sure how to describe that. They’re more delicate looking, like a raspberry, rather than larger and more bulbous like a wild blackberry.

We are spoilt with good dramas on tv at the moment in the Uk, Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads remakes, filmed during lockdown are sometimes disturbing but all rather wonderful. The A Word and There she goes brilliant depictions of living with difference and disability.

I think Cynthia liked this one better than I did. I’ll have to compare it to Lampblack, another vetiver from Bruno.

It’s a lot of fun to have a sniffing partner! Really glad we did this. ?

Woo hoo! I think Bruno was very pleased with the feedback he had received.

I am so late to the party! More than 300 comments … I will savor these later. I am gearing up to take a walk. I’ve decided that even though it is hot out, the humidity is not enough to make it feel like swamp so I will attempt it – fortifying myself with water, a salty and a sweet snack.

SOTD yesterday was Guerlain Soufflé d’Oranger from the fabulously gorgeous bottle:

SOTD today is IUNX Talc – shopping enabler pin to Coumarin! I got this from Alder & Co. It is soooo good! Orris at its finest!

I ended up working almost 5 hours yesterday and then another 2 this morning (unexpectedly, as there was no indication yesterday about having to do something today but it all got done).

I had a bunch of other stuff to bring up but they can wait until during the week.

(Oh yes, I will indulge in ice cream after dinner.)

You’re right about the weather… this afternoon wasn’t nearly as horrible as I thought it was going to be. So an afternoon grocery run wasn’t too bad. Just bad enough, alas. I ended up going to 2 different stores and forgot something anyway. ?

LOL. I went minimalist (for me) this weekend and skipped Whole Foods.

I know, right? The privilege of being on a salary means there’s an expectation of not being bound by a start and time, give or take.

Good lord I am late to the party but hope everyone’s weekend finished on a high note – especially those who had a case of the grumps like me! I didn’t want to post til I had managed to shake off some of the doldrums.

Going to shower soon and put on some Kiehl’s Original to lull myself to bed.
