It is! And not able to find it here in the States.
No scent yet, though I’ll probably end up smelling like lemon balm and bee balm again as I continue with my garden projects. Someone spoke of growing the plants that had survived for you the previous year. 🙂 That’s my attitude towards mint and its relatives. LOL
The bee balm is native to America, so it grows like a wildflower. The mints and lemon balm have naturalized pretty nicely. 🙂
I also liked the comment about growing things that survived last year. I keep thinking about herb gardening, but my track record with houseplants-which I no longer have any of-makes me hesitate. I suppose it’s a little late to start from scratch this year anyway. Maybe I should start researching now for next year…
Sage and chives are very forgiving herbs, in my experience.
Something ate one of the clumps of chives I planted this spring — grazed it right down — but I think they’ll grow back. That was one of the areas that I was trying to put the hardware cloth around yesterday. Sage is okay for me if I don’t let it get too dried out. The things that survive for me are the plants that don’t really need much in the way of human help. lol
I think that gardening wisdom came from me. 🙂 Mints are excellent examples of that category! You have to work hard to kill a mint, in my experience. I’ve had limited success with bee balms, though.
Yes, I think so. 🙂 I’ve done all right with bee balm. I usually try to plant it in places in the yard where puddles stay after it rains. It likes that setting, though it will grow in dry places, too.
I have mint and lemon balm “volunteers” in my garden from last year. It’s so nice when they do that!
Bee balm and pineapple sage are 2 of my favorites for attracting hummingbirds.I have rooted multiple pineapple sage plants to put in different garden areas before each fall in case some don’t make it over the winter (most do).The bee balm doesn’t seem to need much help to winter over.
Pineapple sage isn’t hardy here, but I nursed a plant through the winter inside, by a west-facing window. That was a plant I didn’t see available this spring from the usual sources where I’d acquire it. Here it starts blooming in the fall, and I’ll try to save it before frost. The hummingbirds have headed south before it starts blooming here, though. The pineapple sage is hardy in tropical climates.
Bee balm is hardy in colder climates than Zone 6. It’s called Oswego tea for being used to make a drink centuries ago in that area of New York (Otsego?).
Southeastern Pennsylvania is an area where plants that need a certain amount of chilling over the winter will get it, and some plants more common in the upper Southern U.S. may muddle through and come back in the spring. But I can be pretty sure that the ground will be cold enough for certain bulbs and perennials to come back and set flowers. I’m generally doubtful that plants happier with the warmer temperatures of Zone 7b will come through the winter here outside.

SotD is Dune. I need to pull this out of the dresser drawer it’s tucked in so I remember to wear it more often. Tea is Stash Chai Spice.
I was up early and went for a “run”( I use that term Very loosely, lol) and it was finally not so hot and humid that I felt like I was going to melt. There was a nice breeze coming off the lake.
I have a haircut this afternoon for the first time since March 4 and I’m really looking forward to it. My chin length bob has grown into a shoulder length bob, and although it doesn’t look bad it has outgrown it’s clean edge and doesn’t really look like a style anymore. Thank gosh for ponytails and messy buns.
LOVE Dune! It can get kinda big in the heat, but somehow I don’t find it suffocating like some scents can be! Jealous of your haircut. I definitely don’t look stylish anymore.

All counties in LA are shut down for most indoor things. Stores, restaurants, bars, malls, gyms. In 38 of the 50 counties, gyms, salons, nail salons are closed. School is online for San Diego and Los Angeles for the fall semester. Just got off a call for work my team is doing for head start programs – everything shifting again.
So, I am glad I got a haircut on Saturday and I ended up going with le labo tea noir post shower.
what about Northern California? That is where I lived for 6 years..in San Francisco.
I hope being shut down again isn’t too stressful.

Just came back from Home Depot. Crazy monkey stepped out of the shower last night and onto the shower curtain and ripped the whole thing off. While I was at HD I got some herbs to plant, so a bonus.
Then, we use a grocery service that delivers, I came home to half gallon of milk they placed on top of the grapes. So they are all smooshed. Then went into the second bag to find all the boxes of pasta wet and then realized that a bottle of glass (sparkling water) was shattered at the bottom and the whole bag was soaked. And the delivery person didn’t notice this, the bag dripping wet? Good grief.
That would make so so angry. I’m sorry about your grapes!
I am happy that I saw, since I have smell kids and my 4 year old loves to help and take everything out of the bags. With all that broken glass it would of been a horrific morning

I would feel safer with delivery groceries, but after repeated problems with orders, I’m not willing to keep doing it. I guess I’m not laid back enough with my food to allow for the list to be different EVERY SINGLE TIME! (See, not laid back. ?)
We do a mix, the heavy stuff we usually have delivered and things like bread etc I buy during the week. We eat about two baguettes a week so that is something that needs to be fresh.
Also, I buy the majority of the produce at the farmers market..
That makes sense.
I love baguettes! My late stepmother was a baker, and she taught me how to bake my own. I will say, I get the flavor right–they’re delicious!–but I’m still figuring out the texture. Sometimes they’re wonderfully crackley on the outside, and sometimes not so much. I have a lot of work to do to get the crumb right, though. The structure is always too tight. . .
I wish I knew how to make baguette, they are so expensive in NYC!
When we were in Paris 3 summers ago a baguette was one euro, here is almost $4!

Light Blue, which is really very pleasant in the summer. I had a few samples of it that I’m almost through. Pleasant side effect of my strict no-buy is that I’m getting through my samples before they evaporate, and most of my bottles are at least a third empty. When I’m off the no-buy, there will be room on the shelf. Also helps you to figure out the things you really love when you aren’t being distracted by the new and shiny.
That used to be my signature scent way back when. I smelled the recent flanker Sun Light Blue and it was really close to what LB smelled like when it first came out
SOTD: Vetiver Tonka
Crazy thing happened this morn, and the first time experiencing this since moving into NYC 20+ years ago, and that is that an air conditioner fell from one of the apartments onto the street. I didn’t’ see it fall, but apparently it had just happened — wow! I’ve thought about this often, just how secure some of the A/Cs are especially those that have lived many years in their apt. Thank God no one was hurt. It was in pieces and didn’t even resemble anything like an A/C so it must have fallen from a high floor. Pretty sure our building staff will be doing their due diligence today checking on all the A/C that overlook the streets.

Holy moly! Glad you’re ok! Are the air conditioning units in your apartments provided and installed by the building? Not auite the same but it reminds me of when sidewalks around buildings have to be closed after a snow storm due to ice falling down and potentially hurting / killing pedestrians.
I know it’s really disturbing. That’s a good question on installations. We had the building do ours just because we felt better with them handling it but it also costs extra so some might choose to do their own.
Yeah, the ice falling (and tree branches in the parks!) is also terrifying.

I am with you with your frustration. We have a similar dilemma going on here. My daughter is suppose to be entering first grade but that is up in the air regarding if she will attend in person, and the fact that they have not open registration for grades 1-5 yet.

I am so sorry that the initial shutdowns did not result in changes necessary for schools to be safe in the fall! Teaching online in the spring was heartbreaking and frustrating. Every day, I was consumed by how it was negatively impacting my students and their families. I wish we could wave a magic wand and make it safe for them, and for those of us who work in the buildings.

I feel ya, She-ra. Our school system sent out a survey link on different scenarios for fall that we have until July 26 to fill out. July 26!?! That means it will be well into August before we know what’s going on. My sixth sense tells me they’ve already made up their minds and know what they are going to do, I wish they’d just tell us already, families need to plan. So frustrating.
By the time their act is together, for some families, they are left scrambling..
Exactly. I am fortunate that my (almost) 15 year old is a good student and self motivated/directed and fully capable of spending the day by herself. I feel for families and my many coworkers with small children who are left hanging in limbo waiting for decisions to be made.

I ended up in CBIHP Tea/Rose yesterday from a sample vial. I got the impression that if I could spritz it with abandon, it may have been a good fit for our warm weather. Maybe I’ll transfer what’s left into a sprayer and try it again. One of these days, I’m going to order Black March, and it would be nice for it to have a family member with it during its travels. ?
I need to go outside and water the front garden today. I removed all the river rock from an island in the parking strip last year and tried to plant things that could withstand being surrounded by concrete. I think I did pretty well, but some of them are looking pretty shaggy right now. I try to plant things that will not require constant watering, but everything needs more when they’re getting established.
The parking strip has bright orange crocosmias, a red/pink knockout rose, a few kinds of salvia (blue, purple, hot pink to match the rose), a bluebeard, and a red/green varigated grass, whose variety I can’t recall at the moment. So, all playing with shades of orange, red, and purple. Hopefully in a few years, they’ll be more resilient to fluxuations in the amount of rain.
Oh, I forgot, there’s a rosemary and a lavender in the bed, too. . . I always plant herbs with my flowers. I find it reassuring to know they’re there. You know, for the hard times. ?
And it’s practical – herbs amongst the flower will reduce the buggies getting to the blossoms…
Yes, I wondered at that, too. Ages ago, when I first started gardening, companion planting was all the rage. Hardly hear anyone mention it anymore, but I think there’s a part of my brain that still pairs things together with that in mind.
My front strip garden is a sort of mixed ‘English’ style garden with herbs (parsley, burnet, mint, thyme, shiso and lavender) with flowers (Gladiolus, roses, hydrangeas, lilies, carnations, stocks, phlox) and what I have noticed that the herbs and roses are very hardy; the other flowers require more care. So companion planting may help each some, but ALL are competition for water and resources.
Sounds like proteas would do well in your parking strip and they would fit your colour range nicely…if you need something hardy and low maintenance.
I had to look that one up–wow! Such an unsual flower! I agree, the colors look perfect. Looks like they come from your hemisphere. . . never seen them up here, but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t find them from a specialty garden center or maybe mail order. . .

Happy Bastille Day! In honor of it, I very briefly considered making cassoulet (I’ve got a shipment of duck breast and leg confit coming!), but then I looked at a recipe and decided it would just be faster to fly back to the south of France.
I appreciate your cooking dilemma. It is so hot here right now that even in an air conditioned home, standing over a stove or turning on the oven are just not going to happen. Even when I just stir fry Shishito peppers or broccolini, much cursing and sweating ensues.
I do a ton of preserving in the summer and fall, and it always annoys me that the exact same time that everything is ready for harvest is when I least want to stand over a hot stove with a steaming, roiling canning pot! But I do love having my berries, etc, in the middle of winter.
Hehehe 🙂 I understand! Our AC keeps up with our cooking, but I feel guilty about blasting energy to compensate for putting out energy.
Same here! We are grilling almost everything. But we did do our first basil harvest over the weekend and made a TON of pesto — we probably have enough frozen to last the next 6 months — so dinner tonight was poached chicken thighs with pesto…minimal heat required.

I will select a BeauFort London fragrance after I water all the Bonsai! The first collection, dubbed Hell or High Water, are all homages of a sort to the British Naval History, but even better than that, they are all rumination and exploration around one of my favorite notes, birch tar. Founded in 2015 for the CP. The British are Coming! That might be a good idea for a Community Project. Wear your favorite British perfume.
Do you have the Discovery Set in the nice leather holder? It gives off the most intoxicating leather scent!

PMdP Mile High which in theory sounds like a hot mess (immortelle and pineapple) but is in fact really nice and remarkably easy to wear.
Went for a long and rainy walk with a friend which was nice.

An old favorite of mine from the early 1970s or so. Memories of junior high school! I think my first fragrances were probably Love’s Baby Soft and Love’s Fresh Lemon, but Wicked Wahine was close behind. (Kind of a funny juxtaposition as far as the names go…)

Baby Soft was the smell of my high school PE locker room. It was everywhere. I’m glad I liked it too. 😉

I’m wearing Philosykos today. I tried to cut the lawn today before it got too hot, but of course the mower ran out of gas when I was 2/3 done. My lawn has a mullet! My husband has our car, so I can’t go grab gas.
Feeling anxious today. I need to start focusing on the things I can control and try to be a little less mindful of everything else. That’s why I was trying to mow the lawn – it was a simple way to bring order to my world.

Yes! I do lots of those little attempts to bring order to my world. It helps. A bit. I think perfume is part of that. I can (more or less) control how and what I smell. And it helps when that is enjoyable!
Ha! On the lawn mullet. My husband got a fiskars mower this year and loves it, I love the quiet.

I got home last night to anxiety filled mail, so I cleaned the kitchen and bathroom to relax, lol. I hate cleaning, but it helps to be accomplishing something, when there is nothing to be done.

I’m finding it a bit debilitating when anxiety does a drive-by. I’m increasingly anxious about fall and winter. While they are two of my three favorite seasons from a nature standpoint, from a work standpoint I think I’d rather jump off a bridge than deal with the coming storm. I’m finding more and more I just don’t want to go to work. At all.
Although, I will say I had two lovely patients last night. It was an absolute pleasure to take care of them. I’m trying to keep this in the forefront of my mind.
With the sale of your house, could you take some time off? I’m thinking this flu season on top of corona is going to be the nightmare from hell.
My contract here is completed the first week in October (unless they decide to cancel all their contracted staff again?), so I was planning on taking 4-6 weeks to wander back out west, camping, hiking, and having down time as I went. But, realistically. I don’t want to take longer than that off for a variety of reasons. I’m having a bit of trouble reconciling my desire to be “of service” as directed by my heart and conscience and needing personal time to get my head in order. Hospitals all over are still putting staff (and patients) at risk, and it looks like we still don’t have adequate PPE…yada yada yada.. Seven months into this and the US is basically doing the dead mans float… It’s just exhausting.

Sistine, I think this is exactly why I am painting all the rooms in my house. It is a good project for me…I can do it slowly, I feel satisfied when the room is a new color, and painting is a good mindless activity, very meditative.

Woke up in L’Air des Suisess Alpine (pretty sure I didn’t spell that right). Had a doctor appointment over the phone. I am happy that my dogs are getting a Barkbox today and part of my dad’s birthday gift is arriving today. I am thinking of getting out a dab of vintage Shalimar extrait today.

Had to train a new attending on an application this morning, and am going to the eye doc this afternoon to get my eyes dilated, so in old friend, VCA Bois d’Iris, present but not assertively so. The cute young ER doc I worked with this morning was all about moving on. My optometrist this afternoon will have to get in my face a bit this afternoon. Then I get to work from home the rest of the week. Just not doing the commute every day will feel like a mini vacation…

CP points in Essential Parfums Nice Bergamote. It is really nice, and the travel spray is just $20. Kind of a no brainier. Plus, the atomizer is really good quality. I think it’s the same one Byredo uses.

Dealing with some annoying car stuff. Someone vandalized my car (tried to break in and then a poor attempt to set the car on fire!) late Saturday night. Both my front door handles got ripped off and my driver side mirror is just hanging there. Also, some scratches down my driver side window. Talked to insurance yesterday, and they want to total it! My car is not worth much, true, but it only has 70,000 miles on it and a lot of life left. It’s a 2007 Kia Spectra. So today or tomorrow I’m going to call a couple body shops to see about an estimate for getting the door handles and mirror back on. Why is there constantly something new to deal with?

My husband works for one of the big insurance companies, and I’ve learned from him over the years that “totalling” a car has nothing to do with its repairability and everything to do with its “value.” I would guess the year of your vehicle alone is enough to warrant that response. On the plus side, I’ve heard him discuss cases in which folks got the “total” value from insurance, regardless of what the costs of repairs would be, and they walk away with a bit of bonus money.
Thanks for that insight from your husband’s firsthand experience. That does make sense practically, but damn it’s hard to stomach when I know it’s still a really good car. So sorry about your car and yeah, what a violation. I’ve had my share of “totaled” cars and there was no dispute it was the right call. I was surprised at the amount I received but they were all low mileage cars which probably bumped up the present value due to its perceived longer remaining useful life.

It’s Taco Tuesday and I am making shrimp tacos! Coleslaw already done and I will marinate the shrimp before I go for my walk later after work.
Eek, how draining is it to be an executor? It seems to take forever and involves nightmarish activities like filing a tax return for the deceased.
The tax return was easy but it was creepy that the software did not take into consideration that the deceased could not do their own tax return or at least the way the questions were worded was not good.
I do know I have to send an inquiry somewhere to check if mom has any other children … someone somewhere is making off with the $25 fee! I have yet to do but that was what I recall reading.

Wearing Fils de dieu today; I have my haircut in a few hours. I was up a bit early to prepare a Greek Spinach dip to take for tomorrow’s visit with family.
When I was done that I opened the front door to check my planters on the step; I heard a meow close by. Hmm, the neighbors don’t have a cat. But somehow there was a cat wedged under their planter. I got the cat out and did a quick inspection. It seems ok, not injured. It’s now inside here, temporarily at least. Very nice, friendly cat that has been declawed?; it must be someone’s pet that got out of the house.
Posted a picture on Facebook on the local lost and found pet page so I hope the owner contacts us. We are leaving tomorrow for a few days.

I’m wearing MadHat Limed today for a warm sunny day. MadHat started making scents circa 2014 so not CP compliant. Hoping Kanuka is doing okay and wondering if Alex is making a good recovery.
I continue to walk a little further each day since my surgery and can feel myself getting stronger. Yesterday I paid my taxes, too (oof). Why do I think quarterly is April, July, October, and January when Oregon thinks it is April, June, September, and January. Every year they charge me a $1 for being late with the June payment. When will I learn?
If your email includes a calendar function maybe put in a reminder to yourself a couple of weeks ahead of the June date…

That does sound lovely.
It is, it’s supposed to be a chypre hence the name with some patchouli but on my skin it really is a musky orange blossom and I’m not complaining as I love OB. Floris does pretty very well.

It’s Bastille Day! (Stares in Downtown Portland)
WHEW!
1) Am in Prada Fleur de Orange- perfect for a day that will reach 86F (30C)
2) Portland is still in Phase 1(ish) of ‘reopening’ (many of us never stopped working!) and we may not get to Phase 2 until SEPTEMBER.
3) HOWEVER! Stores did reopen, and I FINALLY got a new media console, book cases, candles and lamps for the lounge- all of that for $500, since everything was in a Sleeping Beauty slumber and so was on clearance. Because I opened one of those dumb store cards I got 10% off on top of that- so I got $1500 worth of stuff for $450. I also repaired the dining room chairs and redid the front door locks.
4) No kids and all the nieces and godsons are now in college. They are taking online classes to be safe and they will be saving a big chunk of change in doing so (no sports fees, dorm fees, etc).
5) The garden is now heading toward that lush, hazy portion of the year. Pea plants are dying down but still giving off about half a small bowl of peas a day. Squash is full flower, as are the tomatoes. The bullying nasturiums are now giving seed pods, and I am trying to keep on top of those and using those so that they don’t reseed as much next year. Because we had a mild June, I have a ton of mixed lettuces- perfect for salads! and my fennel did not form bulbs this year- all went straight to fern, frothy leaves. Sigh.
The English style in the front strip is dong well- the carnations and delphiniums are spent but the herbs, daisies, roses, glads and lillies are doing well.

Yes to cherry tomatoes! Mine are just starting- june was mild and cloudy-ish, so the tomatoes grew beautifully and put out flowers. Just now they are beginning to fruit. I think I made a mistake in the garden placement – I rotated beds, so the tomatoes don’t get the full on blast of sun that they did last year, so late flowering and fruiting, but the foliage on them seem happier.

Our lettuce is over, too hot! But tomatoes coming in slowly, and plenty of green beans, and so much basil I am almost sick of basil.

I had a craving for Azurée today, which was a nice choice for a warm but not too hot summer day. I harvested two bell peppers today, the first of the season. And zucchini of course.
Yay for garden harvest! I am looking forward to fresh lima beans but have quite a wait for that still.
My daughter’s wisdom teeth are officially out. The worst part was getting her to stay calm before they sedated her. She wasn’t very happy and had some pretty choice words for the hygienist, for which I appologized. The second worse part was the bill being three hundred dollars more than I anticipated.
I’m off until Saturday now, so that’s good. I have alot to attend too.
Sotd is Elizabeth and James Nirvana White, but it’s almost gone now, so I will put something else on in a bit.

I’d guess that a lot of people in my area are making tacos on a regular basis, since quite a few taco fixings are in low supply at the grocery store still.
I have gone the non-traditional route which is probably why I had no problems getting my ingredients.
Definitely less of a selection of tortillas and taco shells now. And some salsas are stupid hard to get hold of. ☹

I’ve been gone for a few weeks as per usual in the hottest stickiest most humid part of summer. Perfume just doesn’t work in my office on the worst days, so I tend to just go without for a while.
Also with the political crap going on and the Covid crap going on, perfume just didn’t seem right for a bit. But today I landed on a sample of Replica Lazy Sunday Morning and it’s making me smile today! Seems like a dupe for Amazing Grace? Vera Wang Look? I can’t place it, but I’ve definitely got this scent in my collection somewhere….. 🙂

Hope you get a break from the heat! We’ve been in a steam bath lately but got a bit of respite today.
I was in Alabama for a few days last week and almost died from the humidity. It’s crazy, because I lived there for over 30 years, but man, it just hits me differently now that I’ve been out west for a while!
Humidity is a dirty word when you are used to drier air!
Seriously. I don’t know how I did it for practically my whole life! As soon as I opened the door of the car when I arrived I was taken aback how thick the air was!

Ugh, what a day. Some of you might remember back in February or March when I posted that Mr. Jalapeno had found a crack in the master bath’s tub. Today was the day it finally was replaced. The installation tech showed up at 7:45 this morning, and left a little after 3pm. I wore a mask or face covering the whole time he was here. Serious propers to everyone who routinely does that as part of their job. It is fatiguing. ?
SOTD = once again, Ylang 49 EdP. I needed a great smelling “grab and go” for today. I will be a little sad when I thunk my sample.
So I haven’t had anyone here yet and I’m delaying it as much as possible. At some point I do need to have my HVAC serviced…
So far, we’ve had 2 people in for repairs. Hopefully we won’t have to bring anyone else in.
Delay as long as you can. Or make sure your space is well ventilated-like big box fans sucking air out large windows.

There was plenty of physical distancing in both cases, and lots of ventilation. The tub replacement was originally scheduled right when everything was shut down in NJ. It’s a relief knowing that there isn’t a crack in the tub doing potential water damage.

Ylang 49 reminds me of a classic fragrance, but right now I can’t think of what it is. Definitely worth a sniff or a sample.
Glad that is done though! We have been lucky, everything that has gone wrong has been outside. We have had the tree surgeon, and we’re expecting roofers this week and then painters hopefully soon.
The heritage rose gang must have been through the cemetery at the weekend because the dogs were literally dragging me around the plots. Took a while to figure out it was blood and bone – the equivalent of dog cocaine. So while they were going from rose to rose snorting up dust, I found myself dragged to a distant corner and came across a grave with the name “Snowball”. I pictured a pony, the love of a 12 year old girl . Such a fantastic name. Anyway, i checked it out on the cemetery register but there was no information, apart from date of death so searched through the historic newspapers and it turns out that “Snowball” was from Scotland, went to Australia then here, trained as a vet, became the inspector of the first abbatoir ( sorry snowball pony) and later the head of the SPCA. I love having online access to old newspapers…such good stories. I also get a strange feeling of community/ living history in the cemetery after learning something about the people there. I gues this is a good week for Australian and NZ perfumes :Curio Noir, Map of the Heart, Abel etc. but I am in Fiele (2014) Viola. I wish I coukd get the council to pay me to fill in the biographical details and links on its cemetery websites.
Fascinating! Why the name ‘Snowball’? Any clue?
I looked up the origin of the surname “Snowball” and it seems it may be linked to a nickname for someone with either a patch of white hair or a bald spot. It gave NE England as its place of origin. The grave is very, very simple with just the name “Snowball” and no other words or information but the cemetery register has three members of the Snowball family linked to the grave.

I’m very late tonight as I had distractions today. Followed the CP by wearing St Clair First Cut. Someone said it had no longevity on them, but it’s good on me. Perhaps it’s more of a skin scent.
This morning I spent two hours in a Zoom class, the first day of a writing seminar Insigned up for. My nice neighbor has done it two years and encouraged me to join, and I’m very glad he did. It’s a bit pricey and limited to ten people, mostly retired. There was a prompt for a very short essay today, 800 words, and people read theirs. I was quite impressed. I think this will be a great activity to divert attention from our virus problems toward something engaging and creative. I’ve had writing ideas swirling around in my head all day. The focus is memoir writing but you can take it in many directions.
That sounds like fun. I’m glad you found something like that! I feel like maybe I should look for something similar maybe since we are stuck indoors again!
