Monday scent of the day 7/13

Posted by Robin on 13 July 2020 240 Comments

Oh dear, Monday again, so soon. Also, French Fries Day and Sir Patrick Stewart's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Ormonde Jayne Champaca.

Reminder: on 7/17, we're doing Nouveau Niche, updated...wear a perfume from a new (2015+) niche brand. (A repeat from 2015.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from Flowers and Fruit of the Maricojas Passion Flower by Marianne North (1830-1890), via Kew Royal Botanic Gardens. You can read more about North in Kew's Forgotten Queen, BBC Four at The Arts Desk, or About Marianne North (1830-1890) at Botanical Art & Artists, or Things you should know about Marianne North at Kew. Buongiorno

    Tea is Pleine Lune

    SOTD Sanrovia by Blocki Perfumes

Top: lemon, bergamot & Valencia orange
Middle: geranium, lavender, jasmine & Jacques Cartier rose
Base: labdanum, vetiver, cedar & sandalwood

To match I am wearing a vintage pleaded Prada skirt in baby blue and a beautiful white tank top. Pretending I am in the Italian shores…even drinking out of my cup from Capri with big lemons on it.

Oh, Sanrovia sounds wonderful! I’ve never heard of it!
Drinking a lot of Earl Gray tea lately, with an extra dash of lemon. 🙂

SOTD is Woody Perfecto by Parle Moi de Parfum. Founded after 2015 so I’m good for this week’s CP.
This is nice enough but not me at all. Feels like a rather generic fragrance for men. Not that I know many of those.

    Tea is Su Li Cha.

I can only think of one other brand; Pont des Arts. I’ve been trying to find a website that has lists of niche houses that are new (ish). No luck so far.

I think Hajusuuri likes the iris one from PMdP, and Persolaise is a fan of Papyrus Oud. My favourite so far is Totally white.

I’m back! Great walk, I heard several hawks in our neighborhood, and walked by an owl’s nest with three chicks. Fuzzy and cute!

L2SM – Seeing your SOTD, you may enjoy this one. Notes from Fragrantica are:
        Top notes clementine, orange blossom, ivy, green tea and bitter orange;
Middle notes are peony, chamomile, mandarin orange and basil; Base notes are sandalwood and amber.

On my skin, it’s one of the most realistic freshly-peeled citrus/orange scents, refreshing without being too bitter, the chamomile/basil gives it a balanced herbal feel, and the best part is the pulpy clementine, green tea, and ivy note at the end. Sunshine in a bottle, it’s an uplifting fragrance.

I’m in TF Eau de Soleil Blanc again and thunked my little Sephora spray sample. Today is my fourth day of work in a row which means 48 straight hours. I’ve been planning all weekend to treat myself to a Chai tea latte today and apparently I’ve really been looking forward to it because I dreamt about one last night. In my dream something kept hitting my lips through that little hole in the lid and when I opened it up there was a pair of wrist sweatbands floating in my Chai. Lol and GROSS! What does that dream even mean?!
Anyway I did get my Chai this morning and it was delicious. And no sweatbands, I checked.??

I am so happy to hear that you got your Chai this morning! 48 hours in a row sounds terrible. I waited tables during college, and I remember a harrowing week when a whole bunch of staff had up and left the week before. Suddenly, there was no one to fill the assignments, and I worked 3 back-to-back “breakfast, lunch, dinner” shifts, which meant 5am-11pm each day. I was crying before dinner on that third day, failing to pull myself together before a customer might see me. . . I hope you get some real rest soon!

Happy Birthday to Sir Pat Stew!

Wearing a random fragrance from the sample bowl today, Neon Rose by Floral Street. As advertised, a big pink rose. Very pleasant, and not very fruity at all, but not really anything to write home about.

Am off today and tomorrow and trying to summon the energy to do some chores and exercise, but mostly just want to curl up with a book. Am reading The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. Am not far into it but enjoying it so far.

I was at my doctor’s office for tests on Friday. All of the waiting rooms looked emptier than usual. Every other chair was blocked off. The strangest thing was that all the usual magazines were removed. Of course they’re always dog-eared and ancient so it’s not a big loss, but creepy. What I really resented was no more coffee on hand!

As ever, or so it seems these days, I am still only at the coffee and bleary-eyed stage of my day. So, SOTD will have to wait. I like the idea of working through some’more samples, though, so that’s a likely thing.

I put 5 fuschias in my yard yesterday. I hope the hummingbirds approve of my selections! The yard was a blank canvas when we purchased our house last year, and it is slowly filling in. I’m trying to learn from my efforts at the last place–to spread things out a bit more to give them room to fill in, to clump similar/same plants together so they make more of a showing, to take my time selecting things. At the garden center, I still impulse-purchased an adorable mini fuschia for a planter–teeny blooms no more than a centimeter across! That one’s for me and not the hummers, I expect.

Fuschiarama! I love it! I wish I could see it–I love gardens and shops that specialize so you can see all the ways one might use a plant and all the varieties! Within a short drive from me, I can go to places that specialize in irises, dahlias, lilacs, rhododendrons, roses (of course, we are the Rose City), and likely others that I’m forgetting off the top of my head. I spent many happy springs and summers scheduling my weeks around what was most likely to be in bloom and taking day trips.

I cut my hair short (ear/chin length) last year after a few decades of hair well-passed my shoulders. I love it! I have to get more frequent haircuts, though, and that is seeming less ideal in the current moment. I haven’t had a haircut since the New Year, as I was scheduled for the next one in March and it was cancelled. . . I would love to get my look cleaned up, but I don’t mind that my stylist is taking her time to return and staying safe. (And I’m really glad I didn’t throw out all my hairbands, hairties and the like!)

I chopped some of mine off myself, day before yesterday. Just couldn’t take the extra shagginess. It’s a curly mop, so my less than professional shearing isn’t too dreadfully obvious. Well, that’s what I’m telling myself, anyway. 🙂

Amusing moment after church yesterday. Our favorite diner in NYC (Eat Here Now) has reopened for outdoor seating in a parking space and on sidewalk. I popped my head in to say hi to our usual waitress since we couldn’t stay. Had to drop my mask down so she’d recognize me. So nice to see her again…looking forward to eating there for breakfast again.

In Vivacious–Hiram Green launched before 2015–but not much earlier, but this frag IS new—so partial points. I love the carnation in this one. In fact, if this were billed as a carnation scent, that would make sense to me. I see in other reviews comparisons with Apres l’ondee and L’Heure Bleue. Nope. Not to my nose. This is a big carnation, with some loveliness from blue and purple flowers in the background.

More spicy than powdery, but the iris and violet ground it. Especially in the dry down, you get a chorus, not a spicy solo. (To my nose!)

Well, I get the classic perfume reference, but this perfume is somehow sweeter, and even a tad green–more violet leaf and violet-y to my nose, with that carnation dollop in the top notes. But my nose has been mortifyingly inaccurate in identifying notes, so take my take with a grain of salt!

I’m getting really bored here, the library holds service is working at a crawl due to reduced staff and there is only so much TV I can tolerate. That makes sense! Why not rename reformulations, especially when they’re dramatically different than previous iterations? I think it’s very cynical to think that folks won’t notice if the changes are significant. They could even just number them, batch numbers, etc.

Man, if Patrick Stewart would bring over some french fries this day could really turn around! I’m in L’Ombre Dans l’Eau today — almost went fragrance free but I decided that this scent is really an anti-bleakness potion. Laid awake fretting about the avalanching life slope I find myself on until 2am last night and then woke up bang at 5:45, so I’ve got a nausea-inducing level of sleep deprivation going on. Fortunately, I smell great!

This is a great CP. I have a good hand to play.
I will get my act together by tomorrow.

In Paris-Deauville today, 10 or so sprays this morning before work, could barely smell it by lunchtime.
    Looking forward to Friday already.

Wrist, wrist, inner elbow, inner elbow, behind each ear, maybe a spritz or two in the hair for good measure, decolletage, and a bit on your blouse/tshirt, so you know it will hang around a bit longer. . . This is easy homework. ?

I don’t mind spritzing a garment that would be getting washed after its current use (or the next time I’m wearing it, it’s going to be at home where no one else will care if my scents mix oddly). But no, I wouldn’t spritz a scarf or similar on purpose, although they end up fragranced in any case!

I got a free sample of it at Nordies when Neyronrose and I had a perfume meetup in King of Prussia, PA. It’s been hitting the spot lately, but I don’t think it could fit into my perfume budget. The showergel might be an option, though…

Gosh, things were so different last summer…

I had a lot of fun learning about perfumes that day, so it’s a nice memory. 🙂 I did end up getting a bottle of Diptyque Eau Rose a few weeks later, and a couple of AERIN travel sprays, and a few LUSH solid perfumes. I may have gotten a solid perfume at the time — maybe the Cardamom Coffee?

I know I got a couple of wash cards from LUSH, since I figure that’s the cheapest way to get a fairly thorough idea of what one of their fragrances smell like. When the entire bathroom smells like whichever mix of herbs or woods or fruit or flowers for a few hours, I find it pretty easy to tell if I’d like wearing it for that amount of time. 🙂

Things are both very different, and yet the same. There are still some long term family things that I am dealing with. And yet, crossing the river into PA seems like a huge venture now.

    SotD = Luctor et Emergo

    I struggle and emerge.

As a descendant of Dutch folk (though not Zeelanders) I adore the name. And I am enraptured with this perfume. The cherry note leans a little to almond on my skin which makes me swoon. It’s beautiful. Thank you to springpansy for sharing it in the splitmeet.

Patrick Stewart, happy birthday, Sir! He’s the only celebrity I encountered in NYC that made me stare and want to follow. So charming in person.

Love the passionflowers up top today. I have passionflower seeds sprouting in a little pot by my front door. I hope they survive, I would like to train a passionflower vine up the lattice on my front porch. It would give balance to the lattice on the other end of the porch which is covered in pink jasmine vines.

And the little passionflower seedlings remind me that I can do hard things. About a month ago I had to take my car to the dealer for a recall repair (Takata airbags yada yada yada). The dealer was supposed to have a loaner car for me to take home rather than me waiting 4 hours for the repair. The loaner had a flat tire. They offered to shuttle me home in their van. No thank you, not with a bunch of other people!

So I walked home. It took an hour and fifteen minutes. But it was a good excuse to walk on the river trail which passes the horse stables where I rode as a child. And there was a passionflower vine growing on one of the fences. So I carried one of the ripe fruit home and harvested the seeds. I hope someday to have flowers like this:

I got sour cream and then wanted to use it up before it went past its due date. I got frozen latkes (potato pancakes), defrosted them, and used the sour cream on some, and applesauce on others. When we had tacos, I put sour cream in them. And I got baked potatoes yesterday to finish up the sour cream. 🙂 Mom and Dad helped out with eating the potato pancakes and putting sour cream on their tacos. lol

I’m in MFK APOM today because I needed something light and uplifting due to both our weather and my mood. I had something of a meltdown last night after finding out that several of my friends are sick now, and was awake until 4:30 a.m. I think they’ll be ok but one is in a family that is all positive and her father is in the hospital with breathing issues. Two other good friends are self-quarantining after learning that someone they have been in contact with has tested positive. There seems to be a horror movie atmosphere here with the Thing or Creature creeping closer. A bright spot, perhaps, is that a friend who runs a small business has heard the governor will lock things back down tomorrow after the polls close for voting.

Yikes, scary for sure. That’s the insidious thing about this virus- people look well, have no symptoms, and yet are contagious, with an incredibly confusing scope of deleterious outcomes for infected people. I have been “staying home” since March. I don’t get close to anyone outside of work because getting close to people at work is scary enough. Don’t let anyone, friends or not, in your house or in your car. I know this old news, but it’s against human nature to voluntarily isolate, and hard to do for any length of time. I think of everyone as the peanuts character Pig Pen, and instead of carrying around a cloud of dirt, they’re carrying around a cloud of covid. Universal Covid Precautions. Sometimes it helps to scream into a pillow. Be safe!

I had a couple of days of not going out last week, and then Saturday involved a morning grocery store run and trying to figure out taxes. Doing taxes continued on Sunday, and I did a line editing job in the evening. I didn’t feel like talking to anybody! State taxes went out in the mailbox on Friday or Saturday, and local taxes went out this morning, so I feel better. I’m hoping the federal taxes went through online, but I can print that out and stick it in the mail tomorrow if online didn’t take.

Today, Mom and I picked up some books we’d put on hold at the library. I have a feeling that Mom’s going to start reading the historical romance novels by Tessa Dare that I checked out for myself. I’m kind of thinking that it’s still better than the times she appropriated my Kindle for days.

I wasn’t planning to work in the yard, but I thought it felt cooler in the evening, and I’d been wanting to put hardware cloth around more of my plants, to protect them from deer or groundhogs or what-have-you. Dad said he’d seen deer in the back yard yesterday. I ended up using all 25′ of the hardware cloth, although things may get rearranged next time it gets relatively cool out.

As far as how the garden is growing, ‘Mme. Isaac Pereire,’ a Bourbon rose, has some buds again. That’s one of my favorite fragrant roses. The ‘Maid of Orleans’ jasmine is still loving the warm weather, and has flowers open, and lots of buds. The daylilies that we fenced in with hardware cloth in the spring are blooming nicely. 🙂

    *Hugs and love*

    EJ

I was so excited to pick up library books last week, but turns out they are already discontinuing curbside pickup because they are letting people in the library now. Boo, back to kindle for me! Luckily I do not have to share the device with anybody.

Mom and I don’t mind going into the library to get our books on hold. It’s much easier than trying to find an available curbside time slot. And the library has been fairly well adapted so the circulation desk staff has a decent amount of plastic between themselves and the library patrons. Mom is happier with her paperback romances and cozy mysteries than trying to use a Kindle, though she did like being able to change the font size if needed.

Darn those squirrels! That’s how I think of them, too — as rats with furry tails. Squirrels are much more specialized in body build for arboreal life, but otherwise they seem much like rats to me! They’re sure opportunistic when it comes to food!

Forgot to mention what fragrance I put on in the evening — Hermes Eau d’Orange Vert. I guess I’ll take negative points for Hermes not being a new company. LOL

While I was wrestling the hardware cloth around to try to protect a lily from being eaten, I could smell the fragrances of the lemon balm and bee balm in the area where I was wrestling. The red-flowered bee balm I have has leaves that smell rather like oranges. I think the Eau d’Orange Vert was an attempt to keep the citrus theme going. 🙂
