Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Fourth of July 2020

Posted by Robin on 4 July 2020 211 Comments

It's the Fourth of July weekend in the US, and we're celebrating with our standard-issue open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance for cutting through heat and humidity, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

    Happy 4th of July! ??✨

Going with American brands today. Bobbie Brown Beach for the day and Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess for the evening.

Staying home and keeping it very simple food wise: hot dogs, hamburgers, corn pudding and a very refreshing sangria. Just want to relax!

    Have a healthy weekend, everyone!

      Sounds perfect! Happy 4th!
I had the same thought as you this morning about american brands and thought wouldn’t Tommy Girl be the perfect 4th of July fragrance? That packaging, with its red, white and blue. Luca Turin gives it 5 stars. This sent me down the rabbbithole of the usual discounters, eBay…you know how it goes.?

Not good sleep, my eyes are puffy.
Having coffee, post shower I think another Chanel Eaux. It seemed to fit the mood and weather yesterday and smells good on my bathrobe still.
    My mani pedi was delightful.

It was too warm. I’m so glad I moved but my upstairs stays warm.
Somehow I grew up in a house in New York with no ac and one bathroom like everyone else and my mom would take us fall school clothes shopping at Macy’s @ Herald Square in August when there was no ac in the stores! Gosh my sister and I could hardly wait to get out of there. And we would go for drives in the evenings with my parents and a grandmother or two in the station wagon also with no ac and stop for Italian ice or Dairy Queen.
And for those in NY we would watch the fireworks over Ft. Lee.
Do they still have them there?

I remember those hot summers in the city… being stuck on a subway with no AC! Ballet classes on Broadway above a bagel shop…I remember temps soaring to the 100s some summers. How DID we survive that? LOL ?

Hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck feeling dirt and gritty.
The general exuberance of youth, methinks.

I am wearing Samsara edp today.

    I watched Dark Waters yesterday.
I thought that was a solid movie (Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, Bill Pullman and Anne Hathawy) , but not a very cheerful one.

LOL, you don’t go to a Todd Haynes film for cheerfulness! I loved that movie so much! I like Mark Ruffalo anyway and loved how his character just kept plugging away. The scenes of the factory and river at night were chilling–not to mention that horrible mad cow scene!

I love how Haynes always gets great performances from his actors!

Far from heaven was the first movie i saw from him (long time ago, during or just after my student years haha) and made quite an impression.

    Happy 4th!?
I’m following pl67’s lead with american brands and I’m in Tom Ford Eau de Soleil Blanc. It will go well with our hot and steamy weather. We have a laid back day planned. Maybe some yard games and then burgers on the grill, homemade potato salad, watermelon and strawberry shortcake for desert. This evening we will watch Top Gun, which always reminds me of the summer after I graduated from high school and had the whole world in front of me. Sigh.

Fragrances for cutting through the heat and humidity: Assam of India, Guerlain Nerolia Bianca, Sur Le Nil, JM lime basil and mandarin and my all time favorite L’Occitane’s Green Tea. Wondering if the new formulation is similar to the discontinued one? Sadly my local shop closed its doors last year so I can no longer sniff in person.

Top Gun! I saw that with a girlfriend at the big screen in Westwood near UCLA. It was a total hoot. (My biggest snort laugh was Kelly McGillis wearing a tight pencil skirt, black sheer hose, high heels and leather flight jacket to teach all those hotshot male pilots.)

Happy 4th of July to all friends who celebrate it!

Yesterday I received my decant of Jo Malone Yuja and it’s my SOTD. Good for me as it’s 28*C right now.

Yuja has a juicy, bittersweet opening but as it’s the case of all Jo Malones, it’s very fleeting. After less than 30 minutes all that is left on my skin is some clean, woody whispers. But it’s a nice refreshing scent for as long as it lasts. No brainer citrus for the summer.

I’m heading into work wearing Alien Aqua Chic. It’s smells as if you dropped a grape spree candy into a glass of Jasmine water, and a pinch of salt.

Yes, I used that quite a lot after my hip surgery, and it was of some help. My hip doctor and physical therapist always recommended ice rather than heat. They said heat can make it feel temporarily better but ice is nice (so to speak) because it reduces swelling.

I have zero swelling. It’s really odd. Sometimes it hurts just above or just below the knee. I feel it most if I bend or cross my legs.

SOTD = Rasei Fort La Whatever

Fruity boozy woody gourmand; looks like I got started with next week’s CP!

*** Read on if interested in sampling Bruno Fazzolari perfumes ***

    U. S. Only

Those who follow @fzotic Bruno Fazzolari (“BF”) are likely familiar with his Scentbridge samples program for July: for a total of $18 (includes free shipping), a 3-sample set consisting of the same customizable set of perfumes will be shipped by BF to each person in a pair. Within a month of shipping, if you purchase a full bottle, you will get an $18 discount! The discount applies to each person separately.

Since many of us have already smelled / bought one or more of his perfumes, it may be challenging to find a partner with the same exact list of 3 perfumes to sample.

It’s a $9 investment; for those on a No Buy, it’s a perfumath-free experiment for the science of perfumery.

For those who would like to participate, I am proposing the following:

    0. Participants – You must be willing to share your email address and mailing address with one other person (not me, but the person with whom you are paired). Don’t back out because it is not fair to the person with whom you were matched.

    1. On or before July 10, send me an email with a list of the top 4 perfumes you would like to sample. If you have more than 4, that’s fine. Please use Subject: Scentbridge

    2. I will be match-maker and pair the people with the same samples preference. As soon as I see a match, I will proceed with #3 below so you can get started right away. I’ll keep a rolling matching routine to avoid delays.

    3. I will send an email to each pair with the list of common perfumes. Each pair is responsible for discussing who will do the ordering and how to collect the $9, etc.

    4. If there are people whom I cannot find a match, I will let you know ASAP.

    5. Have fun

Disclaimer – I am not affiliated with BF. Other than my commitment on a best efforts basis to pair people, I am not responsible for anything that happens or doesn’t happen after.

Here’s the Instagram post about it. You can also visit his website to look up the available perfumes.

Coconut lemon body lotion followed by Fiori di Capri. Heading across the street to buy a little bottle of dry white wine to make bolognese again. I may also make another peach dessert. Getting a later-than-desired start because we got caught up in watching the horse racing from Epsom Downs. Our 4th will consist of toggling between golf and horse racing…lots of stakes races today.

Enjoy your weekend everyone! I wish I was in a small town with a nice lawn backyard today. And a neighbor with a pool, so I could hear the splashing and laughter. One of my favorite sounds.

Martha Stewart. More of a shortbread consistency in the dough. My oven runs hot so it got browner and crunchier than I’d like. I think I’d drop it down to 350 degrees if I did it again. Or I’d cover with foil earlier than I did. And have smaller clumps for the topping. Flavor is good though. (I added a bit of ginger and nutmeg to the filling.). It’d be good with vanilla ice cream to soften the crumble.

Hi all taking a breather from the Great Work Poopstorm of 2020 to relax in the hammock and read – will be going later to a backyard socially distanced do.

In a spritz of Gucci Bloom. Might put on Kate Walsh Boyfriend body cream later. The perfume was too strong for summer but the cream is nice

    Happy 4th, everyone!
I’m in Fo’ah No. 11 from a sample that’s been hanging around way too long. This is a very pretty citrus musk with a marine note that really works on my skin.
We’re having pork chops on the grill, green salad and cornbread for the meal today. Trying to decide whether I should bake something for dessert or just thaw out another half loaf of banana bread. I swear it’s replicating in the freezer.

Coincidentally, I have baked a cornbread and a banana bread this week (from scratch!)

I had lost 15 kilos, but am comfort eating due to Corona restrictions here (many have eased up, but my doctor says I need to continue to self-isolate as I am in the highest risk group — auto-immune and elderly). So I’ve regained 4 1/2 kilos. 🙁

SOTM is Dior Escale a Portofino, which happens to be one of my favorites for cutting through heat and humidity. Mediterraneo is great for that as well, and Eau de Hadrien, and Philosykos, and Kyoto, and many others that y’all have mentioned. I need to check out the l’Occitane green tea things – I have the Green Tea et Bigarade and don’t seem to reach for it very often, and wonder if it would be better with less tartness.

I would wait until there’s a VIB sale event to stretch your $100 then get whatever you would normally buy from a department store and get it at Sephora instead. It is rare (other than at the beginning of this pandemic) for a department store to have more than a 15% discount.

Happy 4th of July to my fellow NSTers here in the US!

Not having smoked pork shoulder today after all. It turns out that our smoker was well and truly kaput. Mr. Jalapeno’s repairs were only temporary. So he ended up shopping for a new smoker this morning. As a result, it was too late to put the meat on by the time he got home. We will try again tomorrow.

As a consolation prize of sorts, I ended up having 2 hotdogs and 2 freshly mixed by me Gin & Tonics for lunch.

SOTD = back in Guerlain Mahora. I should have pounced on a bottle of this I saw at a perfume kiosk about 10 years ago at a local mall. But I had no idea what it smelled like then, and it would have been a crazy expensive blind buy.

Hello everyone. I’m doused in Indult Isvaraya from the recent split meet. I would asphyxiate anyone coming in to visit me even before they could breathe out one covid-loaded breath. This perfume is very over-the-top in a way that I love–I love MFK–but I’m pretty sure it would be nauseating to many others. The rich plum, the fetid jasmine, the dirty patchouli—-oooh oooh oooh! Don’t stop!! Not doing much. My good friend who always has had a Fourth of July party on her rooftop deck where we can view city fireworks can’t have it this year and it’s so disappointing. She and I exchanged some food. She contributed strawberries and pork tenderloins to bake in BBQ sauce, I contributed cantaloupe and Mom’s potato salad. Which is the best, of course. I will watch fireworks on TV. The fire chief was on TV last night begging people not to do their own fireworks because the fire and ambulance crews are operating at a huge overload now, with so many ER calls and so many first responders either sick or quarantining with Covid. It’s still scary and crazy here in Texas.

I had been thinking that distanced potlucks might become a thing.

The DC area never got as bad as NYC, and it seems level now, but the rate of reopening indoor bar and restaurant seating plus gyms worries me.

My tiny little desert town reopened restaurants, gyms and bars, and the positive count went from 11 to 38 in two weeks. 🙁

I’m sorry you didn’t get to do the usual things you do to celebrate.

We’ve been hearing fireworks going off at night for a few weeks. I think some people don’t have anything better to do. We watched fireworks on TV. The fireworks in Washington, D.C. were on both CNN and PBS.

It sounds like the spread of the virus has very bad in Texas lately. I hope you can stay safe! I’m still trying not to watch too much news, because the news gets worse and/or more wacky every day, it seems like. I still read articles in the electronic versions of newspapers and magazines. It’s frightening.

      Take care!

Went to Target this afternoon with a list of 3 items to get. One item was nowhere to be found (a spray on and leave tile cleaner). So I wandered over to the end cap of the garbage bags section to ponder whether or not to get 13 gallon white kitchen garbage bags as my pack from Costco will soon run out and I don’t have a trip planned in the near future. The 60-count pack is $8.99 and the 120-count pack is $15.99 and since I was all about saving, I reached for the larger pack. My eyes then landed on a 100-pack that is $9.99. ??? an even better deal than the 120-pack! My mama didn’t raise no fool so that’s what I picked. Fast forward to the self-checkout (no line today!). It rang up at $15.99! What the ? So I mentioned it to the employee and he scanned it and said it is $15.99. I said he can check it from where I got the box to see the $9.99 sign. He said he couldn’t leave his station (eh, he could have called a manager) and said I should take a picture. After a brief moment when I was going to have him call a manager, I thought what the heck. I took the picture and showed him. He could barely see it and was about to touch my phone to enlarge the picture and I almost screamed (no one touches my phone!). I enlarged it so he can see better and he started to say the tag was not for the 100-count box but he really has no argument as it was clear that the shelf with that tag was fully stocked with the 100-count pack. I got the price adjustment and I am a happy camper. $6 to go towards my tax bill ?

Waving to all my buddies here! I’ve been mostly MIA for this year, with only an occasional hit-and-run post. I do regularly read the daily blog posts, though.

I’ve been craving something new and have ordered lots of samples this year, but nothing called to me, until…

I fell madly in love with a sample of Histoire d’ un rêve by Hubert Maes Creations and immediately bought a fb! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! It’s got a yester-year vibe and the perfumer says he was inspired by the 1920’s. I love cardamon in my food and I also love it in fragrance. This is feminine and classy and makes me think back to when I was a child, burrowing my nose into a fur coat worn by my wealthy, sophisticated aunt. The only perfume I ever found with a dominant cardamon note that was to my liking was a sample I tried from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz many years ago. I didn’t buy a bottle because, sadly, it vanished so quickly from my skin, even applied over an oil base.

But the Hubert Maes perfume lasts all day. It’s not got much projection, but it’s so good, I can’t stop sniffing my arm and clothes.
I’ve got a preference for bombshell fragrances and quite a collection, so this is a quiet exception for me.

On the one hand, I’m surprised that it isn’t well-known. On the other, well… it means I have a truly distinctive fragrance that no one else is wearing!

I also like his Histoire Charnelle, which is sexy and spicy and has a distinctive coconut note. But it’s not right on my skin.

Post walk and I doused myself in Cassis en Feuille…reminds me a bit of Corsica Furiosa… maybe the tomato leaf? It’s extraordinaryly refreshing and I will leave the bottle in my bathroom when I am in the mood.

I boxed up all my perfumes and they are in an even darker place in my basement where it’s quite cool so they should be fine until I get my mojo back.

After a couple of mentions yesterday, I dug out my sample of Fiori di Capri – gorgeous, but (sadly) just not me. This morning am testing Carthusia 1681 from another little sample in the “Carthusia” ziplock, and it is just the thing. I keep thinking that I already own all the perfume I will ever need, and then something new comes along (and in this case it’s available in a small-sized bottle), and it’s hard to resist adding “just one more” to the collection.

I love Fiori, but I wonder if it’s been reformulated. I only have the older bottles that I got off eBay. It’s soapy on me, which I like but many don’t.

I think my sample may be as much as four or five years old at this point. I didn’t get soap from it, but that might just be your skin vs. mine. I really do like the scent – just not ON me, if that makes sense.

OJ Frangipani as we headed to church again. It’s hot out there. But, it’s nice to put on a linen dress and Panama hat and wear a little jewelry. And my Sunday-go-to-meeting flowered mask. ??

I will need to buy more Frangipani someday. I bought the travel sprays, and when I wear it, I load up.

Happy Sunday y’all! I started out in the last of my mystery samples, another BWF that truly was too big for me. Drenched myself in Eau des Minimes from my tiny fridge bottle and all is now right in my world.
I need to do something different this week. Not sure yet what it is, but this routine of plan to eat something/eat something/clean up after eating something/plan the next eat something/plan to shop for what to eat something/sanitize something/walk something is getting really stale. ?

Your post makes perfect sense to me, since I am in a similar headspace. So far, my loved ones and I are healthy, and everyone can stay hunkered down and safe. But on the other hand, the tedium of my current routine grates on my nerves at times. So I oscillate between those 2 poles of thought.

July the HOT has come roaring in! Finally summer weather is here and doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. ????

Plenty of amateur fireworks in my neighborhood last night, but they had stopped by 11pm for the most part. I did hear 2 or 3 isolated “pops” later on, but all in all, not too bad. The cats weren’t freaked out at all. ??✨

The pork shoulder has been on the new smoker since shortly after 6am. Still cooking, as I type. Not sure when it will be done, only that it’s not going to be our dinner at this rate. But we will have plenty of pulled pork for sandwiches tomorrow! ?

SOTD = Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur EdP, from the sample stash and my recent order from Aedes. It’s a nice incense and wood perfume that skews a little on the masculine side for my taste. Worth trying, though.

OH! I got an unsolicited perfume compliment from Mr. Jalapeno last night! He said “You always smell good.” That gave me the warm fuzzies.

Coming in under the wire for “lazy weekend thread”!

I hope everyone had a splendid weekend. Mine was boring as usual! Although my city has been opening, up I am firmly in the “let’s wait 3-4 weeks and see what the COVID case numbers look like” camp.

SoY was an error in trying some Do Son that came into my hands with a few other decants. Nope, still does the horrific Juicy Fruit thing most tuberose perfumes do on my skin, ouash, why… Scrubbed and wore Gypsy Water for the rest of Saturday. SotD Rodin Bis.

In the anticlimactic end to a miniature saga, I FINALLY received on July 3 the two face masks I ordered from a small Canadian company on April 27. However, NEITHER mask was in the pattern I actually ordered! ? I received large versus small leopard print, and navy floral instead of black (and I hate navy).

Small potatoes indeed, but having had to chase down information related to my order multiple times, AND having patiently waited 60+ days to receive *not* the actual merchandise I ordered, I indulged myself last night and sent a politely worded but honest review of my experience with their customer service to them via email. It was very satisfying and I hope that in reading it they felt, at least temporarily, disappointed in themselves ?

My weekend was boring too, but busy!

And sorry about your masks. I’ve done really well on Etsy. My favorites are from a shop there called Thread Plus Needle, but they don’t seem to have a ton of fabric selection at the moment.
