Wednesday scent of the day 7/1

Posted by Robin on 1 July 2020 210 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to July, happy Canada Day and happy International Reggae Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

(Oops! A quick reminder that Donatella will be stopping by tomorrow!)

I'm in Le Labo Lys 41.

Reminder: on 7/3, wear a perfume with ylang ylang, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Aha, more blue and white china. The Caskata blue rabbit plates are hard to find and possibly discontinued, but you can find a set of boxed set of 6 canape plates at Gracious Style for $110.

I’m in OJ Tiare, which does have ylang. I forgot my rabbits until I had been up for awhile. I keep saying them every month hoping they will bring good luck. As my daughter said to me on Saturday as we were driving, 2020 has been a real sh*t show so far. Indeed. Just everything. Better days have to be ahead, don’t they?
Today is my Friday? and then I’m off for a 6 day weekend! (is that a thing? lol)

No ylang today: I’m in a drop of the long-discontinued CSP Opoponax, a blaze of ambery sunshine warmth on a glumly overcast Canada Day. (It doesn’t *feel* like Canada Day: they’re not even doing fireworks on Parliament Hill, let alone locally.)

I’m wearing NV Bombay Bling today. Such a bright and happy, yet lush scent. Soon after I spritzed myself, my 4-year-old daughter walked in the room and said, “I smell Nana.” My mom most often wears Versace Yellow Diamond. Hmm.

I think generally they are both strong fruity scents with florals with wood bases. The Versace has pear, while Bombay Bling is big mango.

I received a package from Smell Bent, having taken advantage of their annual June garage sale. Among the bottles I bought was Pepper Ylang, so I am set for Friday. Today, however, I am wearing L’Eau de Sport, aka Balle de Match. I love that Nicolai sells 30ml bottles for reasonable prices. I love the grapefruit in this one.

We could do a ‘soft spot’ CP. Perfumes that we may not love of wear often (or maybe we do) but they nevertheless remain dear because of how or when they came to us ( e.g. Gift from a child, bought on holiday, saved $ for…)

Can’t wait to hear everyones recommendations on YY scents on friday. I love it!

The EdP is lavender-vanilla ice cream to my nose. The EdT starts with a bracing, herbal lavender that eventually trails off into vanilla.

Forgot to say the rabbits today. Jake continues to improve. Sydney is pouting because my dad went to California to visit my sister and she is getting just a taste of the chicken and rice mixture that Jake is on right now. Off today and tomorrow and spending time in Cormandel. I think that it might be a little too warm and humid for it. I just keep wishing that Chanel would make the prices of the Les Exclusifs much more reasonable or make them into travel sets. I think I am about a third of the way to have enough saved for a full bottle. I think that i will wear either LADDM or no 19 today, after my shower.

Sotd is Carven L’eau de toilette. Very refreshing. So I’m trying to maybe order from fragrance buy CA because they are offering ten percent off plus free shipping over 53 dollars. I can’t seem to make it give me the U.S price at checkout though. I keep getting Canadian pricing. I do get the U.S price in the cart, but then it changes. Am I doing something wrong or is this the way it works? I’ve never ordered from them before.

      Hi Lillyjo!
I have not ordered from this company but I’m assuming that it’s a Canadian business and while they may offer to show you the prices in US dollars, they will ultimately charge your card the amount due in the local currency. Your credit card company will then convert that price to US dollars (at the daily exchange rate, plus/minus a conversion fee) and that charge will be reflected on your statement.
      Happy July to you!

The foreign transaction fees are set by the credit card companies and are usually around 3% of the total amount (some credit cards do not charge a foreign transaction fee at all). This information can be found in your credit card agreement.

That is the one. It’s green with rose petals and some other stuff.
I haven’t tried Nocturne Oriental. Out of the flavoured green MF teas Festin d’Or is probably my favourite. I recently tried a new one called Paris-Singapour and that one is really great as well.

I’ve just checked, it’s not thé à l’opéra but Swan Lake. So the association is ballet, not opera.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! I remembered and more is better, right?
SOTD = Dilletante! Out of CP, and late to the party on this recently discontinued OB. It is great. Why is it being discontinued? I am still waiting for my HG Vivacious sample….
OOTD= high summer vaguely tailored but loosely cut pale blue linen shirt, navy linen pants, Birkenstock’s, so I have taken a stab at dressing professionally while being comfortable. These linen pants are from Orvis, the fly fishing gear company. They fit nicely and are a rich navy blue which doesn’t bleed in the wash- I will buy more in other colors…no affiliation, but if you want some wearable linen pants, these are great.

I’m all disjointed today — forgot to say my “rabbits” and am in a hormonal funk; I just have two Zoom meetings and a date with a farmstand for some peaches today but it took three tries to get dressed — the shirt was wrong, the undergarments were wrong, the hair was a travesty, the method of dealing with the hair was all wrong with the shirt, the red lipstick was all wrong for the day. I think I’ve got myself sorted out and I’m now in a bit of Rose Flash, trying to find some kind of harmony…

This particular one was the bright red one in Rouje’s 3-color palette — it usually looks radiant on me but for some reason it was all wrong on this particular day. I’m also partial to Mac Dare You, which I’ll admit I purchased when I learned it’s what Phoebe Waller-Bridge wore in Fleabag. In either case, since I’m kind of a tomboy I go light by dabbing it on with a fingertip so it’s a bit sheer.

In honor of the CP, I am having a ylang ylang note-off with Eau Moheli on my left arm, and Cross of Asia on my right. Hopefully I am not suffering from COVID-induced anosmia, but right now I am not getting a whole lot from either–except definitely the pink pepper in the EM.

Well, it is stronger than the Cross of Asia at the moment, but I don’t recall CoA being particularly shy in the past— so maybe my nose is just out of joint today.

By the by, I keep imagining a children’s story, with Studio Gibli-like illustrations, that tells the story about some hill rabbits seeking refuge in the flat, rooty dens of grave rabbits–and distracting their hosts with rabbit tales (ghost and spirit stories of course!) for as long as possible while a storm rages overhead.

A bit like country and town mice but with rabbit ghost stories. That sounds really good – the grave rabbits could be a bit Victorian in their attire and manners given that it’s a historical graveyard, and the hill rabbits could be a alternative lifestyler/ self-sufficient types and there would be the storm that brings them together (fllods, cold) but the real challenge is from Historic/ heritage humans who want to conserve/ fix the graves – thus blocking the rabbits from their homes.

Those plates are really pretty! I might end up hanging them on the wall, rather than using them for canapes.

I’m wearing Perles de Lalique today, which I like very much. Spicy, floral and fresh – to my nose, it’s mainly rose and pepper. It’s been a really long time since I’ve smelled the original Costes, but I think of it when I wear Perles, for some reason. I also think of Passage d’Enfer, but I’m pretty sure that’s an association my mind is making that doesn’t have anything to do with how either smells, since the line-up of notes between the two is very dissimilar.

Time feels very strange these days, all wibbly-wobbly and timey-wimey. Simultaneously dragging, and yet I’m bewildered about it being the beginning of July.

    Smell good, everybody!

Meanwhile, hoping our podunk water company gets the pipes fixed today. The water’s been off and on for days, and pretty much off for the past 24 hours. I don’t mind hanging out at home all the time, but with no water… not so good. We have a couple of backup 55 gallon drums of water that we are now using. Glad to have them, but the bucket brigade is o-l-d already.

There is a sweet tropical floral accord in the beginning, and I think it might be ylang. But soon amber takes over, and then I can only detect florals in th background. “Ambery floral” describes it very well.
I nearly wore Acaciosa today (lots of jasmine, some ylang), but decided Alahine would be more comfortbale on a hot day. And I was right! It is like a soft, sheer ambery veil on my skin.

Yesterday I watched the 1995 documentary Catwalk, mostly trailing model Christy Turlington from Milan to Paris to NY for fashion shows. All young and impossibly beautiful, incredible clothes and not a computer or ( barely) a cell phone in sight…just people with pens and paper and talking.

SOTD = Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere

I was following in SmokeyToes’ footsteps from yesterday!

My landline phone had been out since Monday. I am now getting a service runaround. I only lost internet access for a few hours yesterday when the phone line was just dead. It is currently crackly and has no dial tone that I could discern, but I can still use the Internet.

I managed to finally install TurboTax software so I am on a roll! That said, I need to figure out how to revoke my consent for some system related data to be sent anonymously back to Intuit. They did something tricky where I was supposed to uncheck a box to not consent rather than check a box to consent – grrrrr ?

smelling fabulous! No. 5 EP is gorgeous, I bet your bottle is one of the originals? that’s the version I like best.

Sorry about your techno woes, what a world we live in, so many conveniences that can feel inconvenient. I grew up with a phone that was hard wired to the kitchen wall. We felt fancy when the family got a second phone in the den with a long cord that reached down the hallway so we could talk on the phone in almost any part of the house.

I’m no longer a fan of TurboTax, they gave me the runaround this time, tried to “helpfully” tell me I had to pay for a much more expensive version than I really needed. When I contacted customer service and pointed out the simple and straightforward problem (even for someone like me who is not a tax expert it was clearly their mistake, I even quoted the IRS guideline to them) they said I needed to pay more. Nope! Next!

That is terrible with TurboTax. I have to see how much fight I have in me to battle it out. I hope I get a prompt before anything is sent but I doubt it. In any case, I think digital actions are being tracked anyway…

I got my Eau Premiere in a swap and it must have been part of a gift set as the size is an unusual 40 mLs.

I know. I hope I get $ back but it is always tricky when one worked party of the year in NJ and then the last quarter in NY. I hope I’m smarter than I was in 2008 when I got a penalty for underpayment of taxes. (Same exact work state split)

The little withholding calculation tables that some employers provide aren’t exactly accurate, either. Hmph!

    SotD = Terracotta Le Parfum

Thinking summer-y vacation thoughts in this pretty thing. It’s a trip to an exotic place in a bottle. Sigh. As much as I love the current version, I dream of finding a bottle of the old style Terracotta in a tag sale someday. I think it’s on my mind because it had ylang ylang and carnation. Mmmmm.

Best rabbit rabbit rabbity wishes to everyone for good things in July. When you’re scraping bottom, it’s best to remember to look up! 🙂

thank u, KellyC! Terracotta is perfectly lovely to my nose. I went to Costco in a mask for the first time today, everyone worked hard to stay away from one another, and I kept wondering why I didn’t think to douse myself with extra extra Terracotta as a force field. 😉

Ysastis today and I have a “business” meeting with the university publisher over a potential nonfiction book. It is one of those projects that would require travel/research that exceeds $ offered, so I need to a. Find additional funding and b. Decide how much I want to do it…a lot of work and basically being worse off financially Vs. having a nice hardback and an interesting project that adds something new to a line of history. It’s interesting how nonfiction operates here…basically it’s all people in full-time university positions who are supported and can ‘afford’ to write as it is part of the job, or self-published enthusiasts who are incredibly knowledgeable but maybe not great writers, and then a few in the middle ( like me) who can get a book deal and sales but still not enough to cover research .
    Was that a rant!!??
    Anyway, will see what happens

Hmm, that’s a bit difficult, is it usual that the costs exceed the advance? I wouldn’t want to risk being out of pocket to publish a book, but perhaps a benefactor can be found to cover the difference? I hope it turns out well after your meeting.

It is difficult. I would have to turn down other freelance work to do the book, plus I almost certainly need to go to OZ and maybe Britain for archival research which is another expense. I’m not sure I care enough about the project on a personal level, even though it is a great project.

???! I did it twice today… once at midnight, and then again at 5am.

Donatella is coming tomorrow? Uh oh. I got some ‘splaining to do.

SOTD = back in Rock Crystal. It’s hot and a little sticky today, and this is working so well for me. Time to pull out more incense samples from the stash, I think.
