Thursday scent of the day 6/18

Posted by Robin on 18 June 2020 217 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy 78th to Paul McCartney. It’s also Waterloo Day (watch that earworm!!) and International Sushi Day and Autistic Pride Day.  What fragrance are you wearing?

The destination: Greece. The weather: hot and sunny. The scent: Diptyque Philosykos.

Reminder: on 6/19, we're doing Fantasy Vacation Friday...pick a destination and wear the scent that takes you there. (This is a repeat from 2015.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: I'm featuring paintings by Giovanna Garzoni this week; I became interested in her art after Kevin sent me the article The Baroque Artist Who Captured the World in Her Still Lifes. Shown above is detail from Piatto di Fichi, c. 1622, via Wikimedia Commons, public domain.

I’m still in SL Vetiver Oriental.

Had a front row view to the turkey crew trying to bust a buddy out of jail this morning. Who knew turkey feathers were so beautiful? Amazing patterns and such a lovely sheen. ?

Also while I am on this fantasy trip, I am speaking fluent Italian, traveling solo, and perhaps a bello ragazzo will be so attracted to my perfume he will ask me to be his amante and we will eat gelato nonstop. Finito

I read all of those two years ago before leaving for my 19 day trip to Sicily and Italy. When I finished the fourth one, I was sad because I hated for them to end. However, the second night of my return to the USA after my trip, the series was on TV. I cannot remember what chanel…it may have been Amazon through Italian Rai TV. However, several months back this year (right before COVID-19 made its appearance), the series was on HBO. I must say that the series was true to the books, plus the actors were perfect for the parts, and it was all in Italian.

I was really sad when they ended too. I think she should go back and do a sequel on the next generation.

Still in Givenchy III right now. Paying those pesky bills and budgeting for the next few weeks. Good news is that I am going to have a little more time off when my parents go out of town in a week in a half. That will be great for the dogs. I am thinking of wearing Diorling this afternoon.

Go Ask Alice again. Possible destination an all day festival, like Lollapalooza or an Eric Clapton Crossroads festival, when I was young enough to enjoy the crowd and heat and all day beer drinking. Now I watch a Crossroads DVD in my air conditioned house and fall asleep before it’s over. Seems like a natural progression 🙂

Fico di Amalfi today as I imagine myself walking into an empty gym, no one already camped under the squat rack or bench press apparatus, with Beyonce playng loud and proud over the sound system. In my fantasy, the gym stays blissfully empty so I can do my thing without an audience, at whatever pace feels right to me in the moment so there’s no pressure.

Sigh. I might be going to far with this one–I’m feeling some no-gym ennui for sure.

PEOPLE. working out in groups and not disinfecting their hands after touching the pull-up bars and I freak out a bit. I’ve learned to head there between 9am and noon so it’s more empty.

Trying to burn through a box of samples, and I’d forgotten I had a vial of SL Daim Blond, so I put on a couple of drops and then I remembered why I’d forgotten: it’s a leather scent but the leather is drowned in waaaaaaay too much iris, one of a few notes I’ve never liked and probably never will. Time to scrub.

Love today’s painting, but I only eat figs, not wear them!! In Ginger Piccante and am someplace on a lake in Maine or New Hampshire, where it’s warm and sunny all day but cool enough at night to sleep under a handmade cotton quilt.

    Comparing Vangelis and Valkyrie today.

I don’t like to complain w/ everything going on in the world but I have been completely unmotivated this past week. It’s like I have hit a virtual wall. I have no interest in work and have to bribe myself w/ things like a bowl of blueberries or a piece of chocolate to get even small/simple work tasks done right now. And the medium/large tasks I am just ignoring. Just utter lethargy and lack of drive right now.

My perfume strips came yesterday so soon I shall be systematically going through and testing my samples/old FBs not unlike Mr. Morillas in the gorgeous pics from the link below that Robin shared a few days ago. Beautiful, scent-strip fans will be my motivation now. 🙂

Completely understand. That’s how I felt all last week – like I hit a wall. I actually took a couple of work hours one day and just read a book, went out for more walks, etc. But I didn’t feel bad about it after all my 11 hour days. It’s a hard time right now.

Maybe you need to take a break..when you are stressed and feeling not yourself you are more likely to get sick.

At this very moment, I am baking a chocolate cake. It has 2 tablespoons of flour, so I feel less guilty about eating several slices. Passing you one..

Maybe you should give your testing strips a break and go back to your vanilla scented perfumes, they always seem to bring you joy…just a suggestion..

Also, during this shutdown (NYC is still in Phase 1!) I lost my desire to read. I became really unmoved by everything I picked up. Then I dived into this Neapolitan series of books and I re-gain my reading mojo. So, I guess I am saying, this too shall pass..

Wearing L’Air du Desert Marocain. Being a bit sideways in CP vacation thoughts in that I’m thinking of the Grand Canyon. Wanted something dry, woody, a bit scrubby. Specifically, though, I’m wanting another 14-day raft trip down the Colorado. Sleeping outside, bathing in the river, floating along enjoying the quiet scenery, reading, laughing through rapids and cooling down by just dumping water over my head, hiking side canyons and sitting by a waterfall. And no connection to the outside world.

    SOTD = Guerlain Liu

… from the SplitMeet. Holy aldehydes! Smells like Chanel No. 5 EDP and not Guerlainesque at all. I may have to re-up but perhaps I will switch it up or maybe not at all ?. It is very nice but do I need more of this? Time will tell.

Connection to the CP. Teleport me to the flagship Guerlain boutique, all testers sanitized and I am the only person there except when I need something, an SA will appear. I don’t mind paying for perfumes bit since it’s a fantasy, I can keep complimentary Bee Bottle atomizers of whatever I want.

In other news, I’m not sure which organization it was but there were many cars that kept driving up to the closed community center parking lot as I was taking my walk. I went elsewhere to continue my walk and walked past the community center again on the way home. There were maskless, not socially-distanced younger teenagers running around, some are doing push-ups while others sat around listening to a pep talk. Perhaps a soccer league as there were both males and females. I know it’s outdoors and generally safer….but exercise expels virus particles. I got out of there quickly even though I was far away from the action.

Wait…are there really travel sized atomizers that have the bee bottle texture?? If so, they should be refillable!

Not good to see kids out socializing with no distancing. On my walk this morning, I noticed a big bunch of little kids, under 6, all playing together. This was new. I looked at one of the moms and I must have looked surprised (really can’t play poker here), and she just shrugged her shoulders. ?

Here in Québec, the pediatricians said the masks and social distancing rules would be too stressful and traumatic for younger children, so daycares and day camps are functioning normally. I see groups of them in the parks here every day.

But in reality he got worse this morning after being dismissed from the hospital yesterday. So we went to our GP, found out the pleural effusion has returned and so i drove him again to the hospital. He was so weak and had trouble breathing that he wanted a wheelchair. Sadly i was not allowed to accopany him. When i returned after parking the car, he was gone and i had to drive home. Now he has a temperature, had his chest tapped again and is isolated as a possible COVID case.

SoTD is PdN Haute Provence, because I’d love to go there when the lavender is in bloom. Slim chance of that happening, of course. We are going to Maine next week, trying to decide what scents to bring. Not a fan of aquatics. Our place is on a tidal bay that opens to the Atlantic, so it always smells of the sea – salt, mudflats, pine, stone, with an overlay of old New England house. Not musty, more like furniture polish, wood floors, cinnamon toast, citronella and flowers. What would you bring?

    Stay safe.

I’m wearing RP Visa, sometimes you need one to get to the vacation of your dreams, and also because weather has stayed on the cool and windy side after a heavy shower this morning.

The wet weather continues, it’s rained for days. Why is our weather so changeable when you want more than one sunny day at a time, but so settled when it rains 🙁
    Smelling good in Ashoka.

I have been testing out different fragrances for the last few days for my upcoming trip to Lakeway Resort in Austin next weekend. Getting ready for some R & R and wanting something to wear that goes with enjoying cool pools and fun in the sun. Open for suggestions from everyone.
    SOTD: Chloe
I like this because its light with that rosy note lingering. This may be one of the scents I take with me.

FWIW, I tend to avoid wearing perfume on anything that will be exposed to the sun.

I’m wearing Nick’s Sunflower by Eric Buterbaugh Florals. I first sampled it while I was on a summer holiday at the beach, so my fantasy vacation for today is to be back in the Outer Banks.

Tried some Victorinox Snowflower to pretend I was escaping from frustration today and going back to Gelateria Dondoli in San Gimignano Italy to gorge myself on ice-cold mastercraft gelato.

Two tedious Zoom conferences beginning at 8am and a very frustrating time trying to go to Office Depot to FINALLY print some important documents off, only to be foiled at every turn by document password protection! The computer they normally have accessible has been withdrawn for social distancing, and the remote printing options don’t let you enter a password!

At the same time my tax returns are a combined 150+ pages (yay for working internationally…) I have a neighbor that’s been kind enough to print out some 1-2 pages for me during the pandemic but 150 is a bit ludicrous.

Maybe I can bribe her with beignets…

Me too, but I worked in 14 different countries last year and had tax withholding done in almost all of them. Yeesh!

Thankfully it’s not ME trying to parse that, and my new accountants are excellent. We won’t talk about what went wrong with my previous firm’s filing of my 2017/2018 returns, I’m still trying to fix that mess ?

Robin, those figs in that picture look good enough to eat! Yum!

Woke up this morning with a headache that didn’t leave until after lunch. Ugh. So I’ve been unproductive today. I’m OK with that… no sense in making things harder on myself.

SOTD = back in Rock Crystal EdP. I’m somewhere calming and soothing.

No perfume yet for me — maybe something soothing at bedtime. I’m having a “getting nowhere fast” day today.

Tuesday(?) I was up all night reading an advanced reader copy of a book. Title is Unhallowed, by Jordan L. Hawk. Hawk takes H.P. Lovecraft monsters and some of the concepts, but subverts Lovecraft’s messages in ways I find delightful. This is kind of a spin-off from his Widdershins/Whyborne and Griffin series, set in the same spooky New England town some years later than the events of that series, and with different protagonists.

Mom reads historical fiction and contemporary and historical romance as her relaxing reading. She doesn’t read science fiction or fantasy at all.

Me: I finished a book with a kinder, gentler tentacle monster!

    Mom: ….

Me, today: the setting is a magical library, but there are realistic bits, too. There’s a professor asking a reference librarian for the bound periodical with the green cover. Reference librarian tells him all the periodicals are bound in green. Professor says that it may have had “journal” in the title.

Mom: *puts her head in her hands* She could obviously feel that reference librarian character’s pain.

I realized early on that this book was a riff off of “The Dunwich Horror,” only Lovecraft’s messages about what’s particularly horrible get upended.

Like how Lovecraft thought that the implication that a character is mixed-race adds greatly to the horror of a horror story — Hawk skips or subverts the racism and misogyny and such, and humanizes characters.

Seeing that today was International Sushi Day inspired me to get up and go out and get sushi to celebrate. I found that an Asian fusion place in our area was open for takeout and got eel avocado sushi.

Bit of background: one place I worked back when was located in a corporate park, with restaurants around that focused on the lunch crowd. A co-worker went out for sushi, and I said, “Surprise me.” LOL. But I discovered that I liked eel sushi. 🙂

I wore Perris Monte Carlo Ylang Ylang Nosy Be today. Was reminded of it by the weekend poll. Had an odd day with interspersed periods of conferencing and cooking. Heard a fascinating presentation on virtual reality and empathy from a psych researcher in Tel Aviv and then made dinner to take over for my best friend’s birthday. Usually we take each other out for our bdays. I made Parmesan asparagus, French potato salad with lots of fresh herbs, and seared Ahi tuna. Plus I included some shrimp cocktail and cupcakes from the store. I think she liked it! She is immune compromised so I can’t go in and we can’t go out.

Working is really cutting into my NST time, dang it all!
Today I wore Vanilla Vibes and now just sprayed Escada Aqua del Sol. It’s been a throw away perfume day, as the heat soaked it up off my skin.
I don’t know what I will pick for tomorrow, I’m going to leave it up to my mood.

    SotD = Prada Purple Rain . . .

from a neverending sample vial. I’ll be sad when it’s gone, so onto the FB wish list it goes!

Chose Purple Rain because I was craving straight up iris today.

Gorgeous purple figs in that painting, makes me want to go to Italy to buy some and maybe a souvenir bottle of Prada perfume.
