Thursday scent of the day 6/11

Posted by Robin on 11 June 2020 263 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! (And happy birthday to Hugh Laurie.) What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: running late, but more community project points in L'Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons.

Reminder: on 6/12, we're In the garden...wear a perfume that was inspired by a particular garden, or that reminds you of a particular garden, or that just smells like a garden in general. (I think someone suggested this, raise your hand if it was you!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Un Jardin sur le Nil today. I like it a lot, but I think I prefer Apres la Mousson, which is strange, because the notes in this are right up my alley.

I like both, but also like Apres la Mousson better. There’s something just a little too high-pitched in Sur le Nil, I think.

Nonetheless, you smell great – like a green fairy!

I like Mousson better but wear Nil more. I’m sure that does not make sense, not even to myself.

Never thought of L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons as a masculine scent, but actually yes, it evokes the image of a blooming summer garden. You smell lovely, Robin.

I am in Herve Gambs Jardin Prive. It is not as fresh and summery as I expected from the notes and Fragrantica reviews. Yes, it has a fresh herbal opening but quickly changes into a heavier woody scent. It leans on the masculine side. I like it but not love it.

        *leans towards the masculine side.
Was going to write “towards”, but somehow ended up writing “on”. Thanks for spotting it.

I’m wearing the wonderfully strange Manoumalia. Which I suppose, could evoke a tropical garden. I’ve never been to India myself, but apparently M smells like it.

Tea is Sweet Golden Grey a sadly discontinued sweet and floral Earl Grey.

I vaguely remember Manoumalia being a strange one. A combination of attractive and repulsive. I think I might still have a sample; I should dig it out to see how I feel about it now.
      Is it still available?

Apparently it is. I adore it but can totally understand why others find it revolting. It does smell of decay, but in the best possible way.

Hi all, my SOTD is Jour d’Hermes by Hermes. I do love this one but only get six or so hours of wear from it.
My SOTE for bedtime was un Femme de Caron. Those who like amber/powdery scents may enjoy this one. It was a nice perfume for bed time with notes of rose, incense, sandalwood, and amber. I finished my decant…. *thunk*

Mr. SmokeyToes and I are headed out for a walk, have a great day everyone!

I’m in SL Un Bois Vanille today. I needed something easy and unobtrusive because my nose and sinuses are in a bit of an uproar today.

The heat has made me very unproductive. The intermittent downpours have kept me inside as well. Nursing a cup of coffee while continuing to be unproductive as I sit and think about being more productive today. I think thinking about being more productive is about as productive as I’m going to get.?

No A/C? Very grateful that our A/C expense is included in our rent or else we’d be sitting in more heat as well. Not sure how healthy it is but definitely hard to work from home when the home is 80+ degrees.

80+ is intolerable. I’ve settled on 72 / 73 for daytime and 68 for sleeping…a pretty narrow range but it works.

New scent for me today, Couleur Vanille by L’Artisan. Interesting modern take on vanilla with salt and immortelle, a bit of campfire in the dry down. Like it so far! I’m on a vanilla kick (again), looking for something new using this note.

Went to Trader Joe’s for the first time since March’s lockdown. The line has been way too long for me to bother but last night it was only a 15-minute wait and shopping was SO nice and easy with so few people in the store. Stocked up on favorites like ‘everything but the bagel’ seasoning.. yay.

I make a smoked fish spread that’s quick and tasty, I mix a can of drained smoked kippers and smoked trout, with capers, mayo, dill and a dash of fresh-cracked pepper, a squirt of lemon if you have it on hand.
It’s great on toasted Rye or Pumpernickel.

I get a slight whiff of doll head from En Passant, but I love it, I think because as a child I had little scented dolls (Kiddle Kologne, anyone?), and one of the dolls was scented lilac or violet.

Woke up in Jubilation 25 extrait. I still find Jubilation 25 hard to wear but when it works, it works. Wearing ISM today since I want something a little lighter and a little easier to wear. I am happy with the bad thunderstorm last night, we didn’t lose power or have trees come down.

Finally on theme today with un Jardin sur le toit. I smell so pretty and relaxed.

The fiance is giving our new Vitamix a good workout by making me a delicious frappuccino. This is also helping my morning go better.

Where my Chloe Tingers at? I just finished Day 9 of the 28-day challenge yesterday, and if I am honest, it is getting harder with each passing day, and therefore getting more difficult to keep myself motivated to follow her. My real life CT friends sound even more demotivated than I am, and if they give up (which sounds imminent), I don’t see how I will carry on. Give me motivation, friends!

Hey, congrats on day 9. Mix it up with some Yoga with Adriene–not quite so fast-paced but yoga does work the core. Personally finding it difficult to stick to a dedicated workout every single pandemic day.

That’s a good idea 🙂 I just worry that if I stop following the program for a few days, I’ll stop forever. Eesh!

It’s easier for me to stick to it during the pandemic than normally :-/ having that regularity keeps me a bit sane.

Like galbanumgal suggested, so far I like doing Adriene’s yoga along with Chloe’s 28 day shred.

And here’s a little bit of encouragement to help keep you going . . . I jump rope in sets of 100 or 200 depending on my other activities and energy level. On good days I can do mostly 100s with two or three sets of 200. I did three days with Chloe, today is her day 4 “active rest day” (YAY!), and guess what? This afternoon I did FOUR sets of 200 jumps, something I’ve never done before. Go me! Go you! Go Chloe Ting, hee hee!

I’m wearing Lush’s Amelie Mae today. I had a bubble bath with a rose jam bubbleroon and rose jam shower gel, so I felt like I had to continue the “roses by Lush” theme.

My husband was offered an amazing new position which he has accepted. Yay! But we now have to figure out how to relocate during a pandemic, including selling our current house. It’s a good thing I already decided to stop dying my grey hair, because the uncertainty of these last few and next few months is definitely going to send me to 100% grey ahead of schedule.

Comparing and contrasting Ex Idolo Love & Crime and Xerjoff Lira today.

And I see about 17 fragrant friends believe L&C is similar to Lira on Fragrantica which is interesting to me b/c I don’t find these similar really other than they both have vanilla.

Lira is sharper w/ the lavender and more floral whereas L&C is more gourmand.

I see Fragrantica labels Lira as a Oriental Floral and L&C a Floral Fruity Gourmand so there…I am right…not the same… 😉

On Luckyscent Lira is $2.90 per ml and L&C is $4 per ml….both pricey considering Luca Turin said on his defunct blog $1.20 per ml was in the ballpark for what perfume should cost.

I imagine you’ve tried Lira but let me know if you’d like to try L&C…I had our ShopFrance friend mule me back a 50 ml bottle which I think isn’t available in the US…think LS just has the 30 ml…would be happy to send you some.

Back in the dregs of my En Passant. . . I really will finish my bottle today.

Can’t recall if I mentioned, about two weeks ago, I had a small (first world!) catastrophe in my soap drawer. A full bottle of Nesti Danti liquid soap some how got turned on its side and uncapped, and oozed 16 ounces of sticky mandarin olive soap all over my curated bar soap collection–meaning my “fancy” soaps like Claus Porto, L’Occitane, Nesti Danti, Fragonard. . . About 12 soap bars in all had to have their paper pealed off, wiped down (some really mushy bits removed), dried in the sun, rewrapped in inelegant saranwrap, and sealed in zip lock bags. Needless to say, while hardly tragic, it did sort of ruin the magic. This morning, instead of that fresh soap thrill where I get to rip off the pretty paper and inhale the smooth, and luxuriously perfect beauty of a new, overpriced bar of soap, I had the sad task of peeling off saranwrap from a now pink, orange, and red (the fancy paper leaked and stained many of the bars), misshapen lump. I think it was a rose perfume soap, maybe from Caswell-Massey, maybe.

Laugh away! My husband and son tried very hard to look serious and concerned as I banged about cleaning and scraping the soaps and the drawer. It was like they were watching an alien cooking class–couldn’t make heads or tails about what had happened, why I was stomping about and muttering to myself, and what on earth I was doing with a kitchen knife, soap, and saranwrap!

Hah! There is some sadistic joy in not having a clue what the colorful lumps of soap were originally. I once read a story about a bizillionnaire wine collector. His mansion caught fire and basically burnt to the ground. A fast-thinking staffer started pulling all his wine out of his cellar to save it by throwing it in the pool. The wine survived, literally hundreds of bottles of $100 to $1000 or more wine. Except, of course, all the labels were washed off!

Happy to hear he’s doing well! It’s a very good thing to move out of ICU. Post-op hearts here come out of ICU to the step-down floor about 12 hours after, so it’s not unusual. I hope all continues to go well! You both must be so relieved the surgery is over. ??

Joined Robin in La Chasse for awhile, but where this used to be nuclear in lasting power on me, it’s seeming to fade quickly. So…I topped it off with Twilly.

We are heading to our church later this afternoon to watch the taping of this coming Sunday’s online service. A first step in opening. One had to register to be able to attend. Since I’m there on Tuesdays making sandwiches, I’m comfortable attending this.

SotD = Un Jardin sur le Toit

I would like to be in a rooftop gardin in Paris right now, though it’s probably just as warm there as it is here. Let me check . . . nope, cool and raining. Now I truly wish I were there.

The bit of green notes at the top of sur le Toit reminds me of le Nil, but it changes direction quickly to slightly tart fruit. So pretty! I love it even more because it came to me in a swap.

I wore La Chasse aux Papillons on Wednesday, it’s so pretty as well. 🙂

Missed you fragrant folks yesterday, and the day before. I did enjoy reading all the sotd comments, but hot weather brain fog kept me from chiming in. Slightly cooler temperatures today, thankfully.

The rose in the vase on my desk just dropped two petals. Feels like the universe is nudging me to get a move on. Time is ticking by, and my feet were made for walking. Gonna hit the pavement now. 😀

Perfumed hugs to everyone, especially if you’re feeling stressed by the realities of this thing we call life. I’m glad you’re here.

Yes to Hermes! This reminded me that, during an online ordering spree yesterday, I stumbled across a coffret of four of the Jardin series and gleefully added it to my basket. It has la Lagune, Monsieur Li, le Nil and en Mediterranee in tiny 7.5 ml bottles. Of those I’ve tried M. Li and le Nil in the past, and am so looking forward to re-sampling those and trying the other two!

I’m back working in the lounge today after a couple of days in the office. We can’t all go back to the office yet, but at least I have a bit of variety. Our building is being used as the centre for the government’s pandemic response, so it’s full of other people.
Since I’m at home, I’ll be doing my three samples a day, so will be starting with Aedes de Venustas Cierge de Lune. It is a bit too vanilla for me, as I recall, but good to try it again.

Ok I must tell you all that I was dreaming in perfume last night- and it was quite a surprise! Somehow I had this dream about an intoxicating perfume with a gorgeous powdery note in the dry down, I could smell it exactly as it was in the dream when it popped back into my head this morning. I put on MCG Sideris for bedtime, maybe that is why. It is so tranquil.
Commando today as I am working furiously in the garden, so perhaps I have a partial credit for the CP.
This evening I will wear my new Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille from the split meet – Thanks so much Adanst!

Wearing Black Orchid today, and I received my sample set from perfumeniche and so also come bearing mini-reviews:

Borneo 1834: Gorgeous, and so perfectly suited to my Mom that I gave it to her after one wear. Dry, green patchouli and chocolate. Something primordial forest about this one.

Gas Bijou’s Ensoleille-Moi: classy sunscreen/beach fragrance. Nice, but I already have Bronze Goddess and there’s only room for one beach scent in my cabinet.

Idole de Lubin: really not what I expected at all: there’s a tart, dry note in this that makes it smell less like the booze and spicefest of my expectations and more like an old, slightly musty wood box. I’ll have to spend more time with it to decide what I think.

Vamp a’ NY: this was the winner of the pack for me. Tuberose that goes on with a rich, delicious rum note and becomes almost raw and vegetal later, with good old Fracas bubblegum in the middle. I wish I had a bottle so I could see how it is sprayed.

Bonus scent Gilded Lily by Ineke: Green, mossy Lily. Smells like a wet garden. Odd name for something this natural smelling, and less floral than green. I really liked it. It’s a unique take on a common note.

I am so glad to hear that Borneo 1834 is still beautiful. It is the only Serge Lutens I love and I was worried it had suffered from reformulation, my hoarded sample is at least 10 years old! I see a bottle in my future. Thank you for your lovely mini reviews.

Gardenia Batik for me today. Yesterday went into work to sign the offer letter to be reoffered my job and then, on the way home I WENT INTO A STORE THAT DOESN’T SELL FOOD! In store retail could open up this week in Massachusetts so I was actually able to go into a bookstore for the first time in 3 months. Was so thrilled that I bought a cookbook (not that I need more cookbooks) just to be able to buy something. Outdoor dining also opened up this week and my husband and I will be going out to eat since we couldn’t on our anniversary last week

    SOTD = Amouage Lyric

    …from a decant

It was actually in the same bag as Imogen Rose ?

    Today, it’s rose violet ?

I managed to get a walk in after work. It wasn’t swampy is all I can say but I stayed close to home because one never knows with thunderstorms!

In other news, I ordered 2 bottles of Hiram Green directly from the HG website – thanks to cazaubon for reminding me! I’m still waiting for the final amount that includes the foreign currency conversion and fees on €256.20 but it is most definitely less than what I otherwise would have paid at Luckyscent ($330 if it is $165 each like the other HG’s and Vivacious was not yet available at LS as of this morning). With this said, there’s still 15 mLs left to split. Head on over to the Splitmeet page to place your dibs. I will provide the link via a comment to this post.

EldO Fat Electrician today and it thankfully veered away from its bizarre first impression of Santal 33, and into a simple yet pleasig chestnut cream and smokey vetiver. I wonder if the bottle needed a good shake or if my nose was just off the other day.

Since my AC Vanille Insensée is almost thunked, this will be a nice sidestep into something adjacent.

I almost cried with how many people replied to congratulate me on my good news yesterday… It was really lovely. Thank you all!
