Wednesday scent of the day 6/10

Posted by Robin on 10 June 2020 288 Comments

It's Hump Day and World Art Nouveau Day, and the splitmeet is still open for business! Musical birthdays today: Judy Garland, Howlin' Wolf, João Gilberto. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Le Jardin de Monsieur Li.

Reminder: on 6/12, we're In the garden...wear a perfume that was inspired by a particular garden, or that reminds you of a particular garden, or that just smells like a garden in general. (I think someone suggested this, raise your hand if it was you!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You smell great Robin. That’s my favourite Jardin from Hermes.

I’m in Tardes by Carner Barcelona.

Even though I just got a coffret as a gift, the Jardin series are not my thing. But I did enjoy reading the extended backstory, not least because it features Aswan, one of my favorite cities in Egypt!

Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin.
We survived the remnants of tropical storm Cristobal, but boy is it muggy. Is it only midwesterners who use that word? The humidity is 90% this morning, but the sun is out for another beautiful day.

We know the word “muggy” in Oregon, too, but are less likely to experience it as weather than other parts of the US. Well, we’ll say it’s muggy, but really, it’s usually not too bad, just vaguely more humid and warm than usual. (We’re kinda wimps about it, to be honest.)

I thought muggy was reserved for the worst weather hell in New Jersey, the armpit of the northeast, where the term is always paired with “hot” as in, “Yuck! It gets hot and muggy in New Jersey in July and August.” It looks like NJ is overachieving in this regard because I just opened the door to get my mail and it was HOT and MUGGY and it’s not even the middle of June yet! ???

I smell a tiny hint of rose, but mostly jasmine. It’s soft and a little bit beachy but doesn’t scream big white tropical flower. Maybe a bit like Nasomatto Nuda?

            10 June 2020 at 11:16 am

How does it compare to A la Nuit, Olène or Love and Tears (if you are familiar with all of those)

And thanks for your quick answer!

          • cazaubon says:
            10 June 2020 at 2:43 pm

Hmm, not as green/fresh as Love & Tears, less perfumey than Olène, more powdery than A la Nuit.

“A night-time stroll along Belle Ombre beach on Mauritius Island is a delightful invitation to dream. As the sun sets over the Indian Ocean, the tall trees stretch up into the coppery sky. Nature takes over the night and releases the solar scent of frangipani, jealously guarded during the day.”

Wearing Foin fraîchement coupé by Oriza L.Legrand. This stuff does smell of summer meadows so no direct link to a garden. However, it reminds me of Normandy which is known for its gardens so that is how I managed to surreptitiously use this one for the CP.

Had a dental appointment this morning. Interesting to see their adaptations to the new situation. The place was always spotless anyway, the only thing that had changed was that I had to wash my hands on arrival and was the only person in their waiting room.
    No dental problems, fortunately.

My first tea today was a fancy Singbulli First Flush Darjeeling (2019) and have since moved to the 2019 Earl Grey Vert Primeur by DF.

I love Li, and yet I never bought it. I do always go and have a sniff, at least I used to. The name always reminded me of a book by Philippe Claudel: La petite fille de monsieur Linh, the actual fragrance not so much.

Well this is the Netherlands after all and my dentist practice is located close to the centre of an old town, so parking is very, very expensive and spaces are difficult to find. So they have to use a waiting room and if there are too many people they will have to wait outside.

Another hot day, and I need to ride on a bus without air conditioning (and wearing a brace). I hope I will not get heatstroke. So I picked Lush Dirty body spray today, one of my most cooling and refreshing scents. It kind of smells like a garden (peppermint, tarragon, thyme), so maybe I still can claim partial credit.

Muggy here (Finger Lakes), too. And I suspect we will go through the day feeling as if it is about to storm, without actually having the storm occur.

Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune for me today, which I guess may smell like a garden in Florida? I wore Sur le Toit yesterday, which is my only FB purchase this year. I wouldn’t have bought it without the Sephora Insider sale, but I am finding it an easygoing summer companion. I like the apples and pears. 🙂 Monsieur Li, OTOH, opens beautifully on me, and then goes weird (unpleasant weird, not Breath-of-God weird).

Thank you! The AA Pamplelune used to turn very sharp on me, but this year it has not been doing that. Possibly the changing body chemistry of late middle age! Anyway, I just reapplied to get that lovely citrusy rush again. And we have just caved and turned on the AC in the house — heat index is 95 and still climbing.

I am officially called back to work. I start next Tuesday. I was supposed to have stayed on furlough, but the woman ahead of me to be called back declined. You are only allowed to decline if you answer yes to have been exposed to covid in the last 14 days. Call me cynical, but I think she lied. So I’m going back. The only positive being I might lose some of this weight I’ve gained.

My tolerance for hot weather went *way* down around early 2018. I continue to have a very low tolerance for heat. For a while I’d run out into 50 degree weather in a T-shirt and lightweight pants, and feel very refreshed. I have medicine for that issue now, but that doesn’t stop me from still feeling terribly warm at times.

The company doesn’t think we will be busy, so they are only calling back a few employees. Most of the store will be on sale half off. I think we will be swamped.

Surprised they didn’t ask you about having a condition listed as higher risk on the CDC website. For us, that’s the last group that will be called in to report to the office. With that said, yes, people lie. I’ve heard that one of the common themes our employees have called in about has to do with what qualifies as close contact (which means you get to go on an 14 day, 10 business day PAID leave),… likely because they did not like what their manager said. We also have many people who are unable to work from home who have declared themselves as higher risk and their time for a paid leave (at full pay) has now been cut off and all of a sudden, a good number somehow got cured.

I wasn’t asked about being high risk. Only exposure. One of the reasons I believe this woman to be a liar, is I know she is still planning on her vacation for the end of the month, I don’t think she can get vacation pay, but she would still get unemployment. I think being part of the high risk group might allow me to not go back to work, but unemployment states the only reason to refuse work is covid exposure. It’s all very stressful.

Sorry about the stress and boo on the person who is very likely telling a big lie. I hope she does something stupid like posting pictures on Facebook so she can be caught in her own lie. Reminds m of an employee who was told to self-quarantine early on because he just returned from a restricted location. He then turned around and booked another vacation (hey 14 days, no work but getting paid … flush with cash) and posted that vacation on Facebook. I did not follow what transpired after that but he was in a sh-tload of wiseguy trouble and deservedly so!

I think I’m going to wear Trillium today, by House of Matriarch, as a means of creeping up on the CP. It’s very green and herbal, with notes of tea and flowers. It has always reminded me of something I either wore or smelled in my youth, though I can’t ever remember what that was.

    Happy Hump Day, all!

Accidental compliance with CP–today in Champs de Provence, a pretty citrus/floral by Eight & Bob. Given that it performs like a cologne (now you smell it, now you don’t), it is probably a good thing I got it for a song.

Tooting my own splitmeet horn (a girl’s gotta do, what a girl’s gotta do)–If you’ve wanted a decant of Chanel’s Boy, it’s in the offering! Notes: Lemon, Grapefruit, Lavender, Rose Geranium, Lemongrass, Rose, Orange Blossom, Sandalwood, Heliotropin, Coumarin, Vanilla and Cottony Musk Accord

    Review? But of course:

SOTM is leftover Lyric from last night. It seemed like a big scent to spritz in June, but I decided to go for it, and did not regret it! I fell asleep last night still noticing it’s pretty, spicy coziness.

I have one peony scent; it was the last off the Chandler Burr mystery scents (Unlabeled? Untitled? I don’t recall. . . ). It’s pretty, in a pink, mall-scent kinda way, and it sticks around and stays equivalently interesting for longer than you might expect for such a scent. Maybe I’ll find an appropriate moment to give it a spritz this week in honor of the community project

Scent of the afternoon: Demeter Jasmine again. Still just getting “very sweet” from it. I guess it’s not supposed to be based on a sambac jasmine, but some sort that’s not indolic. I thought about rose, but wasn’t feeling it right then.

I think the next fragrance I’ll go for, maybe in the evening or at bedtime, will be some light citrus splash kind of cologne for a cooling feeling, or a green tea scent.

    Mandarine Basilic.

Dew point higher than I prefer, so muggy is applicable. Not horribly so, just on the edge.

I considered doing a split of Baiser de Russie, but I realized I’d need to split at least 75 ml to make it affordable for me. Just doubt that’s doable, so I have held off.

When I was new to gardening, I was so surprised to learn how hardy roses can be!

I always thought they were fussy flowers, the way they’re always portrayed in the movies with long stems lovingly clipped by fussy ladies in gloves and matching floppy hats.

But some varieties can be downright weedy in the right environment! Thank goodness. I love them, and I’m not the most attentive gardener at times. 🙂

    SOTD = Lush Imogen Rose

It’s a skin scent rose soliflore. Maybe I’ll wear something else later.

Yesterday’s SOTD, Maison Lancome Parfait de Roses, and Imogen Rose remind me of the The Ringling Bayfront Gardens Mable Ringling Rose Garden. It’s on the path between the Ringling museums and Ca’ d’Zan, John & Mable Ringling’s winter home in Sarasota, Florida.

It’s going to be scorchers for the rest of the week. If it is not over the top hot, I may do another walk after work today. It was liberating to not wear a mask but I encountered more people yesterday than the past few walks combined! I still carried a mask for just in case, plus I had intended to include a quick drop in at Wegmans for which wearing a mask is required.

My morning walk was pleasant but with double the amount of people that I normally see. I don’t wear a mask when I am out that early and walking, but carry one just in case I encounter someone I know who wants to stop and talk to me.

But a moment of clear skies is all it takes to have me walking down the middle of the street again to keep my distance from others!

Yes, even on side roads we have to stay alert. At least we seem to be past the point when drivers were treating stop signs like suggestions! There were a few scary weeks there, with so few people out and about, that the driving rules seemed to break down.

Ringling is a beautiful museum, and absolutely gorgeous on a cooler fall/winter day when you can enjoy the grounds without dying of heat stroke. Don’t know if you’ve ever been to the EdisonFord Museum in Fort Myers, but recommend it if you’re ever down that way again. The grounds there are stunning! And the museum’s not too shabby either.

Muggy here too – I am a dry heat kinda girl. I visited Nevada once and loved the weather – it was like walking through a hair dryer. My curls loved it too – no humidity to frizz them up!

I am wafting pretty in Brooklyn by Gallivant. I am going to cue Oakland Fresca’s and out my own split meet horn for this sweet citrus and cardamom easy listening scent. And here is a review from our very own Jessica. Like her, I am finding myself “pleasantly addicted.”

I cut my hair short last fall for the first time in decades–only to discover that at some point in that time my hair went from straight/lightly wavy to downright curly! (Hormones, according to my stylist.) I haven’t yet experienced dry heat with the new ‘do, but your comment makes me curious as to how it will change. As of now (or as of when I used to be able to get regular haircuts to keep it short), I need a product or two to keep the curls in line.

Some rain again, it’s all good, nature is happy. Wearing Molton Brown Rosa Absolute. First few days without diazepam as my back is all fine now, I can see how that stuff is addictive, noticeably more stress during the day but at least it’s real life. I guess there will be no time in Provence this summer, but maybe in the fall.

So glad your back is back to better!!! Mr. Teebear has a touchy back and if it spasms he’s usually on muscle relaxants for a while, thankfully Canada makes some very mild ones available OTC.

I’ve only strained a back muscle once, and I easily rank it worst in terms of the emotional stress compared to any other injury I’ve had, including a fractured rib, sprained facet joint in my spine, broken bones etc. It is NOT fun!

Thank you Teebear, sorry to hear Mr Teebear is a fellow sufferer. Canada’s approach about muscle relaxant seems very sensible. Yes, it is painful although the other ailments you describe sound painful as well.

I tried my newly-arrived St Clair Song of Aubrac today. Just WOW. POW.

So glad I spoiled myself that tiny bit to get my hands on it. It’s absolutely gorgeous and makes up for me saying ‘no’ to lots of other optional costs.

I just found out last night that I got accepted into a remunerated training program for aerial artists who are grounded due to COVID! It’s not a ton financially, but it will let me follow a training program with a coach 3 mornings per week for the next three months, and get paid $20/hr. This is SUPER motivating in terms of helping me not throw in the towel on my performance career at this point. Yay!

It’s beyond a lifesaver for people in my situation! It’s been three months now that I haven’t been able to even practice my professional skills, much less earn income off them, and I don’t expect to be able to work for at least the rest of this calendar year.

I’m sensibly looking at putting more time into continuing education for a transition to an adjacent career as well, but it takes a weight off to know there’s some support for my continuing in my current field of profession.

Wearing Selva do Brasil today, which is not exactly a garden (although I’ve seen some jungle-like gardens out there), but the bottle reminds me of a garden.

My kid is running a low fever, and has been for a day or so. Previously it was not even up to 100, but today it’s at 100. Normally, I wouldn’t think anything of it, just a summer cold. But in these COVID times, I AM FREAKING OUT!!!!!! Partner has tested positive for antibodies, (we think based on a “cold” he had months ago) I have tested negative for antibodies. Commence major stress!

I jumped on the rose bandwagon today in Mohur extrait. Despite not being a rose lover, I like this one a lot. I caved and made an appointment for a hair cut tomorrow, I just can’t take it anymore. It’s bushy and out of control. Plus, I am out of sorts after a second night of not enough sleep. Reflux woke me both nights before 4 am.

How do you like Couleur Vanilla? I just got a small decant and I’m still trying to figure out if it’s me or not. It’s certainly different.

I’m enjoying it. I like both the lingering, transparently sweet dry down and the salty start. With very few exceptions, I haven’t got a “sweet nose” and for me this hits the mark.

Can understand your indecision because it’s a little different. For me the saltiness is reminiscent of Jeux de Peaux.

It will go on my loooong list, and maybe someday a 10 or 15 ml might be available. But no full bottle.

Side note: why don’t houses do more 15/30ml options?? Is it economically not worth it? Is it exclusivity? Just my luck not to have a vast fortune… (not sure I want a vast fortune, even if i could then purchase an perfume I wanted, thinking of all the potential additional problems in my life if I had a vast fortune!)

Ahh… this has turned into a ramble. Thanks for your patience if you are still reading. ?

I’m trying a Maison Lancôme which I got from Hajusuuri in the Swapmeet, Parfait de Roses. It’s wonderful, rich yet somehow light, pink not red jammy roses. The big event of my day was picking up my co-op share, which includes lots of goodies, local peaches!, corn, spaghetti squash, green beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, and more. I’m eating corn for supper tonight!

I always enjoy reading about your CSA goodies. There are a few people’s account I need to track back when I’m back on IG again.

I joined the rose crew, too, with a bit of Rose Jam shower gel and Quelques Notes d’Amour body lotion this morning. I meant to top up with Rose Anonyme but then never got around to it. If I put my nose right on my arm, I still smell faintly rosy even now.

Appreciation to all who commented on my LOTV and lemon balm issues from yesterday. The explanation about the balm spreading by seed makes perfect sense, given all the places it has popped up. I do enjoy the smell of it, so pulling it out by hand isn’t so terrible… And I’m holding the examples of NSTers’ well-behaved LOTV over the heads of my own plants — maybe social pressure will keep it in line? 🙂

You must have smelled good, from rosy through faintly rosy. 🙂

Lemon balm has very small flowers that pollinators really like, and then has small seeds that could probably blow around an area when it’s windy, or be easily carried by small animals. I know it can pop up several feet away from where the original plant was. I really like the smell of lemon balm also, so pulling out “extra” isn’t too much of a chore. I’ve seen it listed as an ingredient in herbal tea mixes, if you get very ambitious about using it. 🙂 It seemed like several of us had experience of how mint and related plants can spread. 🙂

Etro Palais Jamais. Such a weird and wonderful perfume. (Mine is more than 10 years old; no idea what it smells like now.) I’m going to have to go search specific perfume blogs, because a general google search is turning up no interesting reviews.
