Tuesday scent of the day 6/9

Posted by Robin on 9 June 2020 261 Comments

Hey look, it's Teapot Tuesday! Also, Coral Triangle Day and Cole Porter’s birthday. (Here's Frank, and here's Ella & Nat.) (RIP Bonnie Pointer.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking community project points in a wee drop (I don't have much) of CB I Hate Perfume On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.

Reminder: on 6/12, we're In the garden...wear a perfume that was inspired by a particular garden, or that reminds you of a particular garden, or that just smells like a garden in general. (I think someone suggested this, raise your hand if it was you!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: "The Caskata Peony Blue Teapot is a modern take on the classic blue and white theme. The amazing peony blossom is dramatic and stunning, yet elegant." $110 at Yvonne Estelle's. For a cheaper take on the same pattern, check out the Insulated Travel Mug at Caskata, $19.

I think Shalimar is the most famous perfume inspired by a garden, so I had to wear it this week. But since it is so hot, I picked a flanker with a lot of bright citrus, Shlimar Parfum Initial L’Eau.

That’s neat about Shalimar, I’d forgotten about it’s origin.

In 1990, I had a chance to visit the Shalimar Gardens, which are in Lahore, Pakistan. It’s a public park now, and no longer planted with flowers (at least not when I was there). There was one deeper pool where little boys were jumping into the water, seeking relief from the intense summer heat.

The Mughal architecture of the garden features is beautiful — Lahore is full of some of the most wonderful Mughal architecture outside of the Taj Mahal. However, you have to use a lot of imagination to conjure any idea of what the Shalimar Gardens would have been like when there were flowering plants, candles or ornaments in the niches, and courtiers in opulent clothing.

Obviously, it smelled nothing like Shalimar the perfume, but I do recall vividly the hawkers on the streets of Lahore selling highly fragrant garlands of jasmine.

I went in 1983. I can still recall the baskets of jasmine as if it were yesterday.

Hardy jasmine should be okay in USDA climate zone 7, which is a large part of Maryland, if I am remembering right. Or you can try to nurse the more tender kinds through the winter on a windowsill, which sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn’t. Or you can order new ones from Logee’s Greenhouse every spring. lol. Okay, I don’t order new ones *every* spring. Every few years, I guess.

Neyronrose thank you for the encouragement! I was thinking, between the two – 1)bringing the plant back inside to nurse through winter by a window or 2) buy one or two every year or other year – I’d be more likely to just get new ones. You know, I think I will. Why not? Logee’s you say? I’ll check them out. I’ve just been longing for jasmine or gardenia in my yard for so long. Thank you!

How appropriate, and it’s a wonderful place. I hope you will purchase it. I have the vintage EDP but used to wear the EDT when it was First released and it was like a fragrant bouquet.

This was an EdT sample, sent to me by a generous NSTer. I have not tried the vintage, but I am sure is glorious. A bottle may be in my future, because it is one of those classics that I would love to have in my collection.

Today I’m wearing Un Jardin en Méditerranée, which is not one of my favorites of the Hermes Jardin series. I am not a fig fan, and this is very fig forward. However, it is mitigated by the cypress, so it is not so figgy as to be a scrubber to me, as are some fig fragrances.

For another fig scent that is light on the fig, with more woods and salty notes, have you tried Miller Harris Fig Amere?

I have tried some other figs, but not that one. In fact, I don’t think I have any Miller Harris fragrances. I do like Philosykos for some reason.

Robin, your scent makes me think of the movie of the same name, and the “garden” Streisand had on her roof terrace. She could make anything bloom.

I’m in the ultimate garden. Heaven.

Made a bolognese last night that turned out well…3 hours simmering on the stove. And drank a canned Mai Tai. Too coconutty, but it was pleasant enough as a one-time experiment.

My SOTD is Vacances by Jean Patou. It suggests spring flowers to me, so hence reasonably on project. It’s a lovely gentle floral with a mix of linden and lilacs and other stuff in it.

Tea is the tropical green tea from Palais des Thés for which I have forgotten the name and as it is no longer made will not be able to find online. It does not matter. It’s nice enough but not quite my COT so to speak.

I am horribly behind on reading/replying to NST/other mail/and replying in genral

Started work again this week. I was overwhelmed by all those communication after my short and relatively calm staycation.

Also had that drain problem and on top of that the exterior window frames are getting painted, so needed to arrange that as well. ?

Just wearing Hadrien body creme at the moment, will likely top it off with the edp shortly. Cute story: This past weekend, my 9 year old stepdaughter brings in a bunch of dried flowers. I sniff them and am instantly repulsed. The scent was halfway between dried p*** and honey. With a wrinkled nose, I ask her, “What is that?” She says, “You don’t know immortelle?” Obviously not! :/

Is that imagery suggesting parallels between the lady and the horse? The horse wades through water, cut to lady showering, the lady next to incense, cut to horse producing a dust trail. ?

        Love it.

Cool overcast day, wearing Blend Oud Santal Pondichery. Poor puppy girl has the runs, lots of baths and laundry involved, so we are lying low at home today. She is notorious for eating stuff off the ground, so I’m sure this is due to yet another dietary indiscretion.

I am really losing track of the days since they are without anchors now. Monday used to be symphony day, Wednesday used to be humane society, Thursday chorus night. I woke up this morning convinced it was Saturday. Took a half cup of coffee before I woke up enough to realize it’s Tuesday.
My garden today has nothing growing in it yet, but the soil has been turned over and smells rich and moist. CBIHP Black March.

It’s always funny looking at NST because not only are you a day behind but you write the dates as month/day rather than day/month. So today looks like the 6th September when it is 9th June which is really 10th June! Lucky my diary is empty anyway.

I never understood why we don’t do day/month like the rest of the world, it is much more sensible, and makes a logical progression to year. Probably related to whatever reason we won’t convert to metric already.

Have you ever tried CDG Chayalan Airborne? It starts citrus then goes to juniper and mastic and is good on hot days. Not sweet, quite fresh but not ‘clean’.
Personally I love Ys-Uzac Lale which is powdery citrus

My garden fragrance today is SL De Profundis. I don’t find this funereal, but it’s definitely a different garden than I spent time in yesterday (Le Chevrefeuille). This one is older with more humus and a denser foliage, where plants and trees have crowded out some of the light. I love this garden, too.

I needed a bit more of a hug than a garden scent would provide this morning, so I went with Zoologist Bee. Except I can’t smell it because I seem to be all plugged up. (If you’ve smelled the powerhouse that is Bee, you will understand how ludicrous that is.) Why am I plugged up? I haven’t been near another non-cohabiting human in months. Hopefully it’s just allergies + lack of sleep. And hopefully I will be able to go back to smelling Bee again soon.

It’s been a bad allergy season here in southeastern Pennsylvania, and from what others in the area say, in New Jersey also. My nose is stuffed up sometimes, and dried out sometimes, depending what allergies (several kinds of tree pollen, etc.) I’m reacting to or which allergy medicine I’ve taken. But I’ve had enough sense of smell to enjoy smelling the roses.

Not as bad here for me re: allergies now. I think a huge part of it was the roofers taking off old shingles on buildings near me. Now that they are working downwind, things have improved quite a bit.

Tried a spray of Clinique Calyx this morning. Thanks, Koyel! 🙂 This one is a fruity floral. I find it pleasant, and a little refreshing in the warm weather. 🙂

One flowering tree I forgot to mention again over the weekend that’s still blooming in the yard is the sweet bay magnolia. That has a fantastic perfume. 🙂

The ‘Leda’ damask rose is blooming. Noting that it’s the type with white inner petals. I think that’s the more common type in the U.S.? I believe that the type with pink inner petals and red outer petals is the more common type in Great Britain. Rose growers, feel free to correct me.

The alba rose ‘Maiden’s Blush’ is blooming. That has a wonderful fragrance. In addition to the white color one would think from hearing “alba,” some alba roses come in pink. ‘Botzaris’ had a few flowers. ‘Rosa Mundi’, the pink-and-white striped Gallica rose, is starting to bloom. Some of it is reverting back to the dark pink Apothecary’s Rose, a.k.a. the Red Rose of Lancaster. Some roses tend to have a good number of sports, and Rosa gallica officinalis is noted for being one that’s had several over the centuries.

You’re close enough to drive over sometime when it’s not raining and/or 90 degrees out and have a socially distant look at the yard. 🙂 This part of Pennsylvania is in the “yellow zone” instead of the “red zone” now. I’m still being careful about wearing a mask and trying to keep some distance between me and people I don’t live with, but I don’t get too stressed unless I’m at a grocery store.

I told Koyel I’d try to get pictures this year. I’ve taken pictures of my roses in late May of previous years. I had a ‘General Jacqueminot’ rose for a couple of years, but I think someone *koff*Dad*koff* ran over it with the lawnmower. It did have a very beautiful fragrance. I remember giving Dad a hard time for a while early in my Old Garden Rose collecting when he killed ‘Cardinal de Richelieu’ with the lawnmower. Now I put labels or garden stakes by my shorter plants. Someone else mentioned doing that the other day to try to save plants from her husband’s mowing.

Really what I should do is learn to use Instagram. I started a Tumblr account years ago to be able to put up pictures of my roses and other flowers that we had in the yard. I think I also put up pictures I’d taken at Longwood Gardens. Then I wandered off in other directions with it. I remember having some discussion with an author who insisted that it was only fair for a reader to read an entire book before they decided they didn’t like it. Um, no. But I prefer being able to talk or type in several paragraphs at a time, and having more control over the process.

I’ve kept it simple yesterday and today in vintage Coty Muguet des Bois. A friend gave me a couple of LOTV plants several weeks ago; I’m hoping to keep them corraled in a pot, so as not to overtake the garden. (This is the same friend who last year gave me a potted herb — lemon mint? — that escaped and spread everywhere! Does that stuff get sown by air or something?). We’ll see…

Good luck with the lily-of-the-valley. I like when that spreads, but where the pink lily-of-the-valley is growing, there’s space for it to spread under the trees. I have a white lily-of-the-valley plant in a pot, and that came through the winter fine, and bloomed this year.

If you mean lemon balm, a close relative of mint, it spreads by seeds and runners. And yes, it can take over a garden. (Ask me how I know. lol) The good thing about lemon balm and mint and bee balm (another relative) is that those roots that let it spread out so much are shallow, so it’s not difficult to pull the plants that have wandered too far up by the roots. Oh, there’s also a mint called orange mint, a.k.a. eau de cologne mint. Like most mints, that spreads fast. If you have a mint in a pot with a hole in the bottom, the roots can come out of the hole and into the ground.

Arquiste Anima Dulcis, from the swap meet – no garden correlation I can find for this one. I find that now that I’m not working ftf (and atm not really working a whole lot at any rate), I really like “edible” scents a lot more than my office scents, which are often brisk florals.
    Happy Tuesday!

SOTD = Maison Lancome Parfait de Roses

Sweet, very sweet, did I say sweet, you must like sweet, creamy rose vanilla. Woo hoo! Here’s Victoria EauMG’s review:

    https://www.eaumg.net/lancome-parfait-de-roses-perfume-review/

Two of you from the swapmeet have this in your package!

I worked quite a bit later than intended yesterday. I will get to split emails today.

I will definitely be splitting 2 bottles of Hiram Green Vivacious and have 15 mLs left for dibsing. If interested, head on over to the Splitmeet thread, link to follow in a separate comment.

I”m still undecided about scent for today. Will have to check in later to report. Meanwhile, people here might enjoy this wonderful array of mid-century Avon ads, many featuring fragrances. It’s from the fashion site I read every day, Tom and Lorenzo. They comment on how white it was, which is true, but nevertheless I was surprised to see them featuring even some ads with Black women. https://tomandlorenzo.com/2020/06/ding-dong-avon-calling-vintage-ads/

This is the time of year when I venture out at night with light-weight pruning shears and carrier bag in search of low-hanging Magnolia grandiflora flowers to (shhh!) steal. Although, really, if they are hanging over the sidewalk, they are public property, right? ?

You are reminding me that I had the best plums in Seattle in September 2016. It’s killing me that I can’t remember the variety or the orchard, because they did say they would ship. The flesh was pale but reddish just under the peel, crisp and sweet but not insipid. Sigh!

I’m not doing very well on CP points this week so far. Last night I wore Dryad, which is more forest than garden, and today I’m in Nanadebary Bronze (no garden in sight there either). Later this week my plans include 24, Faubourg and Jour d’Hermes which are more garden-like in a floral kind of way … and if this cold weather continues (I just had to bring the space heater down to my little home office because my fingers were getting too cold to type) I may even indulge in Alahiiiiine for more floral goodness.

Was in Anisia Bella during the day but the weather is not hot enough for it yet. This evening it’s the turn of Liz Earle Essence No 1 which is a lot like Annick Goutal Eau du Sud and Clarins Eau Dynamisante but without the problematic cumin. Wonderfully aromatic, wonderful citrus too, in fact Liz Earle fragrances are great and should be better known.

I have No 9 a really well done ffuity chypre and No 15 is on my wishlist, very herbal but also resinous. The other two No 20 and 100 are pretty florals but not as original. Th whole line is 96 to 98% natural ims, the wuality of the ingredients is outstanding and they are also affordable. Aroun £50 for 50ml and sometimes on sales.

SotD = Jardins de Bagatelle + Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat

Joining pl67 in Jardins today. Almost typed aujourd’hui there, which makes me feel silly. My franglish is weaker with each passing year. I was never very fluent, but once in a while it comes back at an odd moment, especially when reading and writing.

Top ups of EdFdC to keep cool are the order of the day. I was tickled by a mention of three of my most favorite Guerlain colognes over at Bois de Jasmin yesterday. 😀 😀 😀

Disgustingly hot here. I’m in EL BG, but there’s no beach in sight.

I had to leave the AC to run some errands and ugh! I feel like I need another shower. Even T-Tex is overwhelmed with lassitude. I guess that’s why they call these the “dog days of summer.”

I had a box arrive from The Republic of Tea earlier this afternoon, so things are looking pretty good today! Had to re-order the Hi-Caf Gingermint Green Tea… since the weather has warmed up, it’s been a daily beverage. It’s got more “oomph” than regular green tea, but isn’t a caffeine monster.

SOTD = Soivohle Geranium Rose Mint Extrait de Parfum, from the sample stash. This smells like an herb garden at the height of summer, with aromatic herbs and a geranium plant nearby. Definitely a cologne style fragrance, despite being an extrait. Of course, I decide that I want a bottle of this shortly after I had already placed an order there. Story of my perfumed life. ?

Side by side comparison of Diptyque Eau Duelle and AP Couleur Vanille today. Like both. Eau Duelle is spicy and has more of a scent journey while Coloeur Vanille is more addictive.

My 2ml of St Clair Song of Aubrac came yesterday evening!

But I was a disorganized unshowered mess this morning and wanted to get to the pull-up bar before the afternoon workout crowds, so I slapped on some Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensée instead.

I’ll take a shower once I’m done cooking pizza (white pizza with spinach, mushroom and preserved lemon, honey and black pepper flavor sausage) and in all honesty probably go with Fat Electrician for the evening. I want Song of Aubrac to accompany me during the day tomorrow!

Wore 1 tiny spray of Un Jardin Sur le Toit this morning. It was very potent on me, I nearly scrubbed it off. I kept getting a dirty water note (which is a big no-no). Then about 8 hours later it finally got to the dry down which was fantastic!
