Thursday scent of the day 5/28

Posted by Robin on 28 May 2020 264 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, apparently. It's also the Sierra Club's 127th birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am taking full credit again, in Tauer Perfumes Sotto La Luna Tuberose.

Reminder: on 5/29, wear a perfume by The Different Company, Tauer Perfumes, Tokyo Milk, Tocca or Téo Cabanel, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter T.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Still thunking my Histoires de Parfums samples. Today’s choice is 1969. I don’t like it as much as the others I have worn this week. I’ll do a T this morning.

What a lovely choice of picture today Robin!

Parfums de Nicolaï are going to release another Eau Fraîche. With Yuzu this time, the notes sound good. I wish I had waited ordering my perfume from her. Dying to try this one as well.

    In Shalimar EdT
    I know, I am boring

Finished My Brilliant Friend this morning..
Can’t wait to get start on the second book.

My Italian class is tonight and I am happy I have something to look forward to. I don’t know if my teacher even realizes that he is saving my sanity during these strange, difficult times.

Nooo, not boring! You smell delicious!
I searched my samples and found one precious drop of Shalimar bath oil and some other perfume samples. I plan on having fun with revisiting some old favorites. 🙂
Have fun with your class! It sounds like so much fun! I signed up for my HR certification, class begins on June 3rd. I can’t wait to get started!

I received an email of thanks just this afternoon from a student I taught in one course this semester. It was short and kind (and grades were submitted two weeks ago, so no ulterior motive!) and really brightened my week.

And LTSG, I’d love more information on the Italian class.

Hi all, my SOTD is Herme’s Eau des Merveilles – woods, salty notes, perfect for the return of our marine layer and cooler weather.

I *thunked* a sample of Shalimar’s Ode a la Vanille Sur la Route du Mexique, last night, it’s pretty, but not as delicious nor calming as regular Shalimar for sleeping. The recent overly-warm SF weather has renewed my interest in powdering the sheets, in some small way, it did make it a bit more comfortable.
I went through some boxes and found various perfume samples I’d forgotten about; some were spoiled, others evaporated. Time to start using it or lose it!

I’m in “Tales from the Crypt,” aka Chypre Mousse.

I went wandering last night, reminiscing about my first love way back in the 70’s. I was 8 and I think he was 11 or 12? Check out the polyester, the bell bottoms, the smooth moves- everything about this screams the 70’s and I love it. Especially Tony!

As a teen, I cried endless tears of frustration that my unruly kinky-curly hair wouldn’t straighten or style as I’d hoped.
I was always shooting for either Farrah Fawcett or Dorothy Hamill – talk about an exercise in frustration!

I love everything about the 70’s style, including platform shoes, natural hair without a bunch of product, the makeup! Hardly any fake breasts, eyelashes, or lips! Everyone looks fresh and has that Seventies Swagger. Sorry you don’t like the style ?

I get you both. The 70s catered to the all-natural look, which was nice for sure, but some of the colors – avocado and orange kitchen appliances, for example – were not elegant. I had a pair of red, white and blue paisley bell bottoms that were extremely bright and very bell-y. Have no idea how I managed to wear those with platforms and not break my ankle, but somehow I did. 🙂

The 1990’s were rather bad as far as styles go, IMO. And this is from someone who enjoyed that era. I hated the overplucked eyebrows trend!

Working outdoors again today — I seem to be matching my perfume du jour to the need to blend in with nature to a certain degree, which is a good challenge to have. Today I’m in Azemour and welcoming the gauzy, low-lying valley fog that’s cooled our little part of California down from yesterday’s high 90s.

I’m in Paper Soap from J-Scent, which really does smell clean and soapy. The other one form this line I’d like to try is Soft Skin.
I made a Trader Joe’s run yesterday and did have to wait in line to get into the store. There were only 4 people in line though so I only had to wait a couple minutes. Our store can get pretty crowded so I honestly liked it better with less people. I discovered something new to me there: Brookies.?Yes, they are exactly what you think they are, brownies with a layer of chocolate chip cookie bar on top. Omg, did they make these just for me? lol. Sweets are my weakness. Now I’ve been searching the internet for a good recipe because I need to make some!

I am going through sample sets I never properly tested and am trying two from Histoires de Parfums: Ambre 114 and Noir Patchouli.

Both have vanilla which I know from using the Advanced Filter on Fragrantica which I love.♥️

Ambre 114 is very nice. Amber, woods and the vanilla really comes through in the drydown. I prefer Ambre to NP but I am all about the vanilla. 😉

In other news, email indicated a package was delivered. I opened the door and saw 2 … nowadays, unless I need something badly (which is pretty much never), I don’t bother tracking shipping dates. Wait, I lied…not that I NEED it but I placed an order for a snack in a go big or go home fashion and I will be watching it like a hawk because others have mentioned long shipping times and bad customer service – I will dispute the charge if I don’t get it within 3 weeks (I just ordered yesterday). Anyway, I saw my neighbor while I was retrieving the packages. The boyfriend’s auto insurance company is on the hook for the damage to the siding (after deductible)…and since we share a structure, I just mentioned that I hope they can find the same color siding and my neighbor got a little pissy and said we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Whatever, I have zero liability on this one AND I get a vote on the color – I’m easy, but I sure do love green (it’s currently a nice light blue).

As to being pissy, she just naturally has a B-tchy Resting Face and she may be a little hard of hearing, hence, what sounded pissy to me.

4711 White Peach and Coriander from the freebiemeet. I like a bit of peach now and then.

Speaking of….the time of year I brew up some herbal peach ice tea. I also am going to try tangerine. I never used to like iced tea, but developed a taste a few years ago. I generally do the herbal because I like to be able to drink it in the evening. I was always a lemonade kid, but iced tea started tasting good.

Herbal teas are my go to as well. Peach is my favorite but I also enjoy berry and mint. I only drink coffee in the morning, and stick with herbals for the rest of the day. A fresh twist of lemon and a dollop of honey really tops it off.

I see loads of red poppies during my morning run. They grow in all those unexpected urban places, on construction sites, near highways, underneath bridges….. I think thats why they are my favourite flowers. ?

SotD = Lush Breath of God solid perfume

Confession time, I can’t shop in Lush stores, the pow-in-the-face olfactory situation makes my eyes water. So I’ve never taken to Lush scents before, but my goodness Breath of God is good. I can’t stop huffing my wrist. I do love woody scents so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

Thank you to the lovely NST swap friend who shared it with me. I adore the little tin BoG, the label has that colorful stylized cloud thing going on, love it.

And thanks for being here, perfume people. I’m sitting in my kitchen feeling aimless today. Had a hard time deciding what to wear so it’s a treat to have inspiration via NST.

I’ve taken care of the WFH tasks for the day, the house is (sort of) tidy, and my backyard neighbor has a crew jackhammering his patio into oblivion. I need to get out of here. Maybe a walk/hike/bike session is in order. Now if I could just decide where to go. 😉

This is my strategy too. In and out as fast as possible. The staff at my local one are really nice and friendly and helpful, but they can be a little “try this? try that!” and I’m like, nope, I have my mission. They did turn me on to the shampoo that keeps my gray hair shiny though, so can’t complain really!

You have shorter hair than I do, and I feel your pain. I went through the “I have way too much hair” phase a few weeks ago, and now mine has gotten very near the tipping point between “I need a haircut” and “maybe I should just grow it out”. It will almost stay in a ponytail now.

My exact thought on possibly growing out the hair to stay in a ponytail. I am uber-directing how I wish to get my hair cut once I venture out to do it (will be a ways away because NJ), including bringing my own hair mister and a poncho and possibly my own towels.

Mine is now ponytail-able. It’s a short pony, but what a relief to be able to get it off the back of my neck. I had a haircut scheduled for March 12 that I cancelled out of an abundance of caution, so my hair has been uncut (and uncolored — wow, am I grey) for 17 weeks.

A 30mL of Pomelo Paradis and a 30mL of Bergamote Soleil, both perfect summer scents, and I love that they have the 30 mL bottles so I can hope to use them. I previously thunked a 30mL of their Trefle Pur, and I don’t feel like I need it again, but it was a perfect amount of a lovely scent.

Such an amazing photograph Robin, as always. I have been weirdly busy, despite still WFH and not going out much at all, so just pop by here and read a bit, but usually with no time to post. Wearing Cire Trudon II/Deux today, which makes it feel like spring even inside!

I’ve concluded that the reason why I’ve been so horrifyingly busy is that I’ve been less efficient 🙁 Perhaps that’s not the case with you, but this week, I’m trying to get back to pre-WFH efficiency levels. Urgh.

I think it is really difficult achieve pre-WFH efficiency levels. I’ve cut down my daily to-do lists to a tiny fraction of what they once were, and still a lot of things don’t get accomplished when I hope they will.

The real question is, do you get the work done in the time allotted to it? I had all sorts of plans for the 3 hours of commute time that I no longer need for commuting. After 2 months of not getting anything “extra” done, I concluded that my 3 hours got repurposed to: 1 hour of Rosary Brigade and 2 hours of sleep. Lately though, I’ve been waking up ahead of the main alarm so methinks I may be ready to tackle extra stuff.

No, I really don’t 🙁 I’m getting through a little less than I used to back before WFH, even though I no longer have a commute and no longer spend time chatting to anyone. But I commend you on having reassigned your commute time! That’s great!

I think for me it’s that there are more meetings as we endlessly talk about how to handle the situation for the fall, students are more than usually anxious and in need of guidance, and I am trying to finish two projects with colleagues that has turned into a lot of Zoom time that we wouldn’t have thought to do otherwise. (If it isn’t obvious yet, I’m an academic.) It’s a weird feeling of simultaneous stasis – because I am not going anywhere! – and busyness.

We do 75. My mother keeps it on 78, and the only thing that makes it tolerable is how big and airy her house is. Our house is pretty small (Bay Area ftw >.<), so going above 76 gets uncomfortable. On the other hand, the cold blast of the AC gets so chilly at 74! So it's really a narrow range 🙂

We put it all the way down to 72 for the hour or two before bed so we can sleep comfortably.

The plus side is that I don’t use a lot of heat in the winter! None in the bedroom *and* a window cracked.

We have been having cool, crispy frosts all week and during my walks I have been cutting a broken track of green through the silver grass. Yesterday i wandered around the sportsground as a team of rugby players were training. Their bodies were completely obscured by steam as they ran and all I could see were their head and shoulders…and feet, otherwise just clouds of bodies. I didn’t really warm up at all after my walk. Still waiting for sunrise but it is another still, but warmer, day. Wearing Tauer Sotto Luna Tuberose …so hello Robin! By the way, I watched the new Emma last night. I liked the casting of Knightley, Emma not so much ( A bit Emma-Stone-lite).

Upon investigation, it was the mailman (different than the regular) either talking on his blue tooth or to himself. I saw him walk across the street, scratched his face a few times AND, he’s got his face covering below his mouth! Can I get a collective YUCK!!! ? This is so why my mail is quarantined for a few days before I rifle through them.

SotD Penhaligon’s Changing Constance. Just resprayed to get one more hit of that sadly brief but invigorating cardamom and pimiento spice in the opening.

Finally having my second coffee; my first one was black as I woke up at 9am and remembered I had a 9am Zoom, oops! This second one, thankfully, has my usual half and half cream and some rosewater, which is lovely.

I don’t take sugar in my coffee normally but I’d be curious to revisit orange blossom water again with a teaspoon of honey. I also have Pandan extract that I love in there, but I’m running low and can only get that at 1-2 Thai-owned supermarkets further north.

Have you tried Monkfruit Sweetener? It’s a 1:1 replacement for white sugar, is not sugar, but tastes like sugar. The brand I have is Lankato. I finally bought a big-a$$ bag at Costco.

I haven’t tried monkfruit sweetener, no!

Since I normally prefer unsweetened coffee it would be Mr. Teebear’s ultimate call to try something else – I don’t much fuss over the sugar in baking as that IS more a treat, whereas his 3-4 coffees per day are a necessity?

Definitely worth getting a small amount eventually to see how he finds it!

You can bake with it too, which is how my friends and I started using it. One of the group has had problems with weight and was pre-diabetic. He decided on a lifestyle change and started to use monkfruit sugar in his baked goods. He looked svelte when we saw him back in November and he extolled the virtues of monkfruit sugar. Fast forward to Christmas and I got a small package of it from a friend. I started using it in February. I haven’t done any baking yet but when I do, I’ll probably use half brown sugar and half monkfruit sugar and go from there.

More hammering and pounding for me today. Thankfully, this time, no air compressor… just a guy with a hammer putting back the siding. The last time I peeked outside, the gutters weren’t finished, though.

Yesterday’s delivery arrived safe & sound! Rather pleased that I supported a family business in NJ with that delivery, too. I felt so sorry for that UPS driver, though. He looked sweaty and wiped out, and I know he had more time left on his shift.

SOTD = Soivohle Honeysuckle Bird EdP, from the sample stash. This has a BIG whiff of ylang ylang in it, according to my nose. No problems smelling this one! It comes by its floral oriental classification honestly.

They don’t. I used to have a friend for UPS. Not only no a/c, but the dark brown color of the truck turns it into an actual oven. I can’t see how this is safe in the high summer with increasing temperatures. Fed-Ex does have A/C iirc.

I read he died from pneumonia, but they didn’t specify if it was covid related, which would have been a weird irony.

Another round from my Téo Cabanel discovery set today: Hegoa on one arm and a second attempt at Méloé on the other. I think I like Hegoa a lot. Méloé has dried down into a generic shampoo accord on me; no thanks. But neither has any lasting power, even though I (for me) dumped on the juice. Bah.

For swapmeet folks I agreed to swap with — I haven’t forgotten you. I knew it would take me a while to get to the post office. I’ve gotten things together, I have bubble wrap and Parafilm and such. My days during the last couple weeks have mostly been taken up with going to grocery stores and Walmart, having telehealth appointments with various doctors, and randomly falling asleep.

Question from a doctor, structured interview: “Have you been feeling more stressed over the past couple of months than is typical for you?”

Me: “I think I’m at the general level of stress that most people are.”

Tauerville Rose Flash for me today, as my SOTD/daily entry in my Roses de Mai Marathon. Rose Flash is so beautiful.
