Tuesday scent of the day 5/12

Posted by Robin on 12 May 2020 285 Comments

Happy Tuesday, plus happy International Nurses Day (which marks Florence Nightingale's birthday, and is the end of Nurse's Week, which started on National Nurses Day last week). What fragrance are you wearing?

By pure chance I'm in The Different Company I Miss Violet, which I'd nearly forgotten.

Reminder: 5/15 is the International Day of Families. Name your favorite fragrance family, and wear one or more fragrances in that family, OR, make up your own fragrance family (like, say, wood pudding), define it for us, and wear the best example of that family.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Belgium. Group of French and American nurses having afternoon tea, February 1918, from the American National Red Cross photograph collection at the Library of Congress.

LTSG, not sure if you will see this question so far beyond your post date, but are your lessons in-person ones to at have gone remote, or is your instruction always online? I would like to keep working on Italian, have exhausted my local resources, and find that with no structure I am just treading water with review of the basics. If you have a lead for good online instruction that you can share, I would love to learn more.

Narcissus absolute is grown largely in the Aubrac region of France and this is the note that is showcased in this fragrance. Now I am curious about those ? ? ?.

        Well, hello there, stranger!
Nice to be ? ? with you.

Diane thinks it’s her best creation yet and I have to agree because she really does a stellar job showcasing the beauty of narcissus. I am not sure it’s a fragrance for someone who doesn’t care for the note, but if you do, definitely give it a try ( there’s ambergris tincture and Indian sandalwood in it too!!!!!).

Lilacs are in full bloom in my area. Amazing and intoxicating!!!

I think I will do a lilac family week. I am starting with Frederic Malle En Passant. I wish it lasted longer, so fleeting, but I will reapply during the day.

Cold, sunny day! Out later to enjoy a walk.
    Happy Tuesday!

Oh I am so envious of you and the lilacs. Where I went to college (in Michigan) one year my dorm room looked out onto a courtyard that was all lined in lilacs, and once it warmed up and we could open the windows, the smell was heavenly! That’s something from spring in the north that I miss badly. I also went to visit a lilac farm once in Massachusetts when I lived there. There must have been a hundred varieties and all kinds of colors and shades from white to deep dark purple. Again, heavenly! I think only the smell of a lot of roses and, around here, our hedges of gardenias and jasmine, can compete!

There are many lilac trees in my neighborhood, which I love and enjoy. But I love to go to the botanical gardens during lilac season because it is my favorite flowering tree. I love the variety of flowers and the smell. I hope next year the gardens are open to the public again. I really miss visiting them this spring season.

Lilacs are the first (and really only) flowers with a strong scent that grow in the part of western Canada where I grew up. The smell of lilacs is the scent of late spring to me.

Hi all, SOTD is Nikki de st Phalle, with orris root, ylang ylang, amber, galbanum, narcissus, and jasmine. In my top five scents for spring.

Happy International Nurses day to the nurses out there! You guys rock. My mom was an R.N., who started as a triage nurse in the 1960’s, Bed-Stuy, NYC, and ended her career as a Hospice nurse (in FL) taking care of AIDS patients back in the early 1980’s.

Three cheers and a generous glass of champagne for all the nurses! My mom was a nurse, too, who became a nurse practitioner later in her career. She was the fiercest badass I ever knew, *and* she wore Nikki de St Phalle from time to time, which is the most challenging perfume I’ve ever smelled. I keep a wee bottle on hand, and re-smell it from time to time, and every time just think, “*WHAT???*”

Hi lovely NST gang! I’ve so missed having the opportunity to join you here – between work and taking on a lot of volunteering I have had no time off for a couple of months eek! I hope you are all feeling like you’re adjusting well to the changes that we have all faced, no matter what that looks like for you at any given moment.

So! Today I’ll be testing St. Clair Scents Pharoah’s Passion so we’ll see how that goes. Yesterday I experienced my first wearing of Song of Aubrac which is a lovely very rich and deep honeyed narcissus on me – I feel that it has a vintage style similar to her last three. I do love narcissus in perfume, and have always wondered why it’s such a rarity. When I get the chance, I want to pull out all my St. Clair Scents samples again – so many things to smell and experience and get to and so little time, ya know? That being said, I feel incredibly grateful and lucky to have such an embarrassment of riches and I hope that I don’t take any of the blessings in my life for granted.

Happy International Nurses Day to all my fellow nurses and happy Tuesday to everyone who is here and doing their best. I hope you’re all being gentle with yourselves and acknowledging and appreciating all that you do. Sending love and hugs out to you all!

    Good morning Y’all!

Was in my usual last minute rush, so I sprayed Bath and Body Works Bora Bora Citrus Surf and kept running…..leaves the gate smelling like an orange Lifesaver candy, then fades to nothingness in about an hour…. 🙂

Smelly alert: In an effort to do my part to keep the economy going, I saw that Yves Rocher has their seasonal perfume on the US site for $19! Hello Printemps is rhubarb, blackcurrant leaves, and citrus. Yep…I bought it. Pondering why the name is 1/2 English and 1/2 French? Anyhoo, happy to support them and smell yet another new goody….

I’m using a Rance soap at the moment called Magnolia Royal. I wish it were a perfume or at least a lotion. Powdery lemon, a little sweet…so soft and pretty for bedtime.

Continuing my week of as many Leathers as I can manage with Knize Ten.

I know I have a sample of Piguet Bandit around here, but it wasn’t where I expected it to be, so I will need to root through all the bins and boxes later, because now is going to irritate me until I find it.

UPDATE: Now I have J.F. Schwarzlove Berlin’s Leder 6 on left wrist, Molinard Cuir on right. These are by no means identical but still feel similar.

Leder 6 has more vanilla and incense, definitely not too sweet. If you find Cuir Velours too sweet like I do, give this a try. For me, at the price, not needed.

Molinard starts with more citrus, has an overall more floral/herbaceous feel, and dries down warm and woody.

In other news: I just made a killer potato leek soup. I’m stuffed. I still wanna go back for more… ?

    Its my birthday! ?
    SotD is L’âme perdue.

My husband gifted me slippers ( wool on inside, suede on outside), they look like something my grandma had?? but they are sooooo comfy. The perfect lockdown gift ?

And my parents paid me a surprise visit. They stayed outside, of course, waved to me, sang happy birthday and left a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Boerboels always reminded me of the dogs with heads the size of clocks in a children’s book. Was it the Phantom Tollbooth? The Watchdog of that book doesn’t sound right, though.

Good morning, y’all! For the Too Rare Not to Wear project, I’m in White Linen parfum spray, from a .18oz spray bottle that was probably a freebie with a FB. The top notes are gone, but I love the dry notes that are left. Off to fragrantica to figure out what I’m smelling.

Tea of the day is Rishi Masala chai, very good with just the right amount of pepper and no star anise. Just like I want it.

Happy International Nurse’s day to the nurses out there. My mom was a NICU nurse, and she rocked at her job. She saved some very sick babies in her time. I remember the stories. We found out things at her memorial service that we never knew. She was known for having other nurses backs when they were in stressful situations. They said this about her…”You could always count on Joanie. She could start an IV on a dead roach.” I know that’s gross, posting it anyway. Love you, Mom! ❤️❤️

Hooray for all nurses!! Aren’t we all so lucky you chose this very hard and very underpaid profession with your hearts…

I’m wearing The Dark Side from Francesca Bianchi from a try me first sample. It’s warm and lovely, not too much honey and a little campfire. Certainly not too dark. More medium brown than black.

I must say, during lockdown I’m more perfume greedy than ever. I will defend this (to myself) with the claim I’m helping the economy. But where will this ever end??

Lots of things are listed as “e-mail when available” but I would think/hope that the 30% might still hold. You could always ask.

This morning I ended an on-again-off-again relationship that’s been part of my life for 13 years, and that’s been a casualty of the quarantine (among, of course, other factors). I’m wearing AG Le Chevrefeuille to cheer myself up, and to remind myself that there’s warmth sunshine and comfort in the future.

Yesterday Calypso mentioned being able to do a whole month of Serge Lutens perfumes, so I started trying to recall which ones I have in some format (sample, decant, bottle). I could probably do every weekday for a month. And this morning, again, I couldn’t pinpoint what I felt like wearing. Went over to a couple shelves of decants and almost immediately settled on Chergui. I haven’t worn this in so long! It is so strong that I only sprayed my arms, not my neck.

I think I’ve decided that this week’s fragrance family will be NSFW perfumes, and Chergui is definitely one of them because of its potency.

I thought about doing a carnation week, but then I decided to weed out some of the decants by doing “Scents I should like but don’t.” It is their last chance to impress me, or into the swap box they go. Today is
Feminite du Bois. I like the notes but it needs more oomph.

My aunt was a surgical nurse in the 50s-80s. She used to tell us stories about surgeons having tantrums and throwing instruments and making mistakes. Happy International Nurse’s Day!

These are only the ones I know, there are lots more I haven’t smelled, and unfortunately these might be hard for you to get. I should mention I like my carnations strong and clove-y. I like vintage Bellodgia, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Oeillets Rouges, vintage Nina Ricci L’air du Temps, vintage Crabtree & Evelyn Carnation, Prada Infusion d’Oeillet, and Villoresi Garofano.

Scent: I’m in Chanel Paris – Deauville from a sample that came in the mail yesterday. I ordered samples of the original 3 from the Les Eaux de Chanel collection last week, and they came early. Yay! The need for something new got the better of me. So, Deauville. I wasn’t really attracted to this when I first tried it in a store, but once I got past some kind of ‘not a basil fan’ rule in my head, it’s actually very enjoyable.

I think this week’s theme is “non-binary perfume.”

Wearing EldO Vierges et Toreros today and just received in the mail an early bday present from my mom of Kiehl’s Original Musk, which I sprayed to test on the back of my hand. It’s quite simple but nice!

I seem to like perfumes that play somewhere in between the easily classifiable feminine and masculine categories.

Three CHEERS for all the nurses!

Iris is my fragrance family and coincidentally, the 2nd week in a row.

    SOTD = Jorum Studio Trimerous

Well-done iris or orris as the perfumer prefers.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CAGMwOPBzFM/?igshid=3ge4tnav51r3

Jorum Studio perfumes are now available state side from LuckyScent and Indigo Perfumery. My goal is to eventually own at least 15 mLs of every perfume from this house but I am carefully looking for ways to practice my black belt shopping skillz ?.

In other news, I showed a co-worker Billy Bob 2.0 and left him sitting kitteh-corner from me. I got so distracted by how beautiful he is that I had to move him back to his normal location in the living room. Picture to come as I have to unhooky.

I’m continuing “perfumes that smell like California” week in Yesterday Haze by Imaginary Authors. Its story is set in the San Joaquin Valley. One of the notes is “orchard dust” and before I tried it, I thought “whatever, that’s just the perfumer trying to be cute” but it really does have a note that smells like a California almond grove on a warm day.

Thank you so much to all of you amazing nurses, and please pass my thanks to your colleagues. I was thinking of the hospice nurses I met when my mother-in-law was dying, and just how much grace, skill and compassion they extended both to her and also to her family. I pray for everyone working in health care right now, and extend my deepest gratitude. You nurses are incredible!

SotD = CB I Hate Perfume Tea Rose Water Perfume

Very pretty and delicate rose scent from a very very old sample!

I spent a little time yesterday culling the sample herd. Some had evaporated, some I used up long ago then kept as a reference (I guess). It felt good to toss those. Others went into groups – love it, try it again, give aways. The give aways will go to my neighbor’s preteen daughter who loves perfume, just like her mama.

A few weeks ago I mentioned I had a bottle of Vol de Nuit edt with a broken sprayer. I dropped it and the sprayer bent when it hit the hard floor. Better than broken glass I guess.

Yesterday I realized the sprayer had separated into two pieces, which is why the bottle was evaporating. When I pulled off the top of the sprayer, the bottom part inside the bottle fell away, leaving the top open. I poured some of it into an empty atomizer, but there was still a lot of perfume left, so I covered the bottle with parafilm.

I remembered I had an old old old empty bottle of Roger & Gallet cologne. I had a hunch that I would be able to get the sprayer off that one without breaking it. I used pliers to twist the metal collar off the sprayer, then used the flat edge of a screwdriver to pry the crimped edge of the sprayer off the bottle. It came away in one piece, yay!

I cleaned the sprayer and bottle with water then alcohol, let it air dry overnight, and this morning it smelled neutral. I poured the rest of the Vol de Nuit in the old bottle, crimped the sprayer back on top, reset the collar around the sprayer, and voila! Perfume saved. It smells fine. 😀

I’d rather have one bottle rather than a lot of little decants. I think it worked out because the old empty bottle held a light cologne, any traces won’t compete with Vol de Nuit.

That’s my happy-making for this Tuesday-bluesday. Time to get back to work now.

Thank you to the nurses who work so hard to keep us healthy! You are wonderful. Hugs to all.

Today is package delivery day. The Chewy.com cat food order showed up just fine, but I’m still waiting for another package from another business. ?⌚

SOTD = Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her. It is also a lavender fragrance, but not as close to the Mon Guerlain as I thought. The MG EdT is greener and more herbal than the Brit Rhythm, which is a “warmer” and muskier fragrance. Also, Brit Rhythm lasts all day on me.

I’ve sprayed the same amount for both perfumes with each wearing. It’s either Mon Guerlain just fades sooner on me, or maybe I am experiencing some scent fatigue with it. But the longevity of Mon Guerlain isn’t terrible on me. And I could see a shorter “hang time” with a perfume being an asset in the hot and muggy summer.

Reading too quick and thought for a sec that you said whiney, and I thought no that’s my theme of the week 😉

    Thank you, nurses!

CdG Avignon yesterday — seemed like a pretty realistic incense perfume to me. It struck me as smoky in a good way. 🙂

Today: SL Encens et Lavande. I like this one a lot, too.

I found CdG Avignon to be a photorealistic church incense. One of my friends who isn’t into perfume had that same reaction, too.

It’s been so hard for me to pop in to post lately, so better late, and I enjoy catching up on comments to decompress at night.
I wore Stora Skugan Fantome de Maul today and Au Coeur du Desert yesterday which garnered a compliment from my coworker who said she thought she had the same perfume at home, and I told her I doubted that ?. Such a perfume snob I am! She’s not a perfumista but likes patchouli oil and musk (doesn’t like florals so note to self not to overspray those). She also liked my Lush What Would Love Do solid and took down the name. I’ll have to gift her something now that I know what she likes.

We’re happy to see you. 🙂 I’m usually putting on a bedtime perfume around midnight or one, and sometimes make a very late comment about it at the time.

I’m glad reading the comments helps you to decompress. 🙂 Some of the folks here say very funny things, and others remind me that we’re all stressed in our own ways. I’ll read that someone had a meltdown or burst out crying that day, and think, “Hey, it’s not just me.” Around the world, we’re having a lot of feelings. Whether a comment makes me laugh or empathize, I feel like it’s a connection to the world.

Hermes Myrrhe Eglantine. I didn’t put on very much, but so far I love it. Will give it a more rigorous test tomorrow.
