Monday scent of the day 3/9

Posted by Robin on 9 March 2020 198 Comments

Monday, alas, and Vita Sackville-West's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying Diptyque Eau Capitale, courtesy of hajusuuri.

Reminder: 3/13 is National Jewel Day...wear your blingiest, most attention-grabbing perfume.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Gorgeous picture! In a roundabout way, it reminds me of Eeyore, who was always rather sad and would eat thistles.

It’s sunny here today, for once. SOTD is Encens Flamboyant, as I couldn’t find my Musc Nomade.

Ah, that is roundabout! I picked it just because it was taken at Sissinghurst, Vita Sackville West’s garden.

Today, I am wearing and saying goodbye to Tauer Lonesome Rider. Never thought it was going to become a skin scent after 2 hours. I remember it being stronger, or maybe not! ?

Apres L’Ondee…so pretty, but not jewel like, I heard it is being discontinued? Why stop now? Hold on Guerlain and it will come back in fashion? Maybe not.

SOTO…I’m lucky I can scent my office. I bought a Trapp wax melt – florist fridge. Very potent, so I have kept burning the same chip. Very fresh and enjoyable, I might put a base oil in next time and put in a smaller chip.

I’m wearing Parisienne, which I like very much, but not really participating in the CP. The thing is that I don’t generally like big, blingy or loud perfumes on me and anything I have that could be big, I just wear a tiny dab. I’ll think what I can do for Friday. It’s fun because it makes me think about my collection and how to look at it in different ways.

In other news, I’m starting my WFH period – we’ve been asked to work from home until April 3rd (I’m in Seattle) unless absolutely essential. (What’s essential? Life and death? Will anything be better after April 3rd??) It was nice not to commute this morning, but I’d rather keep work at work for the most part, even though I often finish things up at home. There may be a little perfume-ordering going on during this stressful time– just sayin’, Donatella.

Up bright and early this morning to get my van serviced. Sitting in the waiting room, fanning some some SB Incensed over motor oil and gasoline fumes, doing my best to beautify the automotive world. ?

Apropos of nothing, I have become obsessed with thru-hiking and have been thinking about doing part of the AT when I get to NC. But then, I honestly evaluate my Fluff Factor and my aching knees and hips, realizing that particular horse may have left the barn long ago.

Here’s a treat if you like Natalie Merchant, who I’ve loved since the 80’s.

You can thru-hike Deva! People of all ages and abilities do it all the time! (Well, a few hundred a year anyway…)

My middle kid Lauren (who’s in my Instagram hiking pictures) is determined to thru-hike the AT after high school. I think it would be a good thing, IF she’s trained on all the equipment and gets all the information she can. She was born to hike and be outside; my other 2 kids can’t stand it! LOL

Anyhoo, she and I have a little goal to section hike the Pinhoti trail in a year or two. It’s a 335 mile hike from Alabama to N.Georgia, and would be a good starter thru-hike for the inexperienced! We’d like to do a few days of it anyway to see if she really has what it takes…. (I probably don’t have what it takes, but I will do it to help her learn…) 🙂

A 335 mile hike is huge. How long can you take off work? I started hiking again two years ago after a 20 year hiatus. What I found, but this is as always subjective, is that I could do difficult days of up to 22 kms per day of hikes that are labeled “for the experienced hiker”. What I struggle with are LONG days, even if only of moderate difficulty. After 25km my body just goes: enough already. As well, I don’t want to be lugging a tent and lots of food. The old back, you know.

I would definitely section hike it….I don’t think I’ve got what it takes to do a thru-hike? I think it’s as much mental preparation as physical in some ways. The Pinhoti is about 3 weeks for an experienced hiker, and we are definitely rookies! 🙂 Would definitely take me a month or more to do the whole thing!

I’m so excited for her! I know she can do it, especially with your encouragement when she has bad days on the trail. When I was in Greenville, SC, I met an RN who hiked the entire trail with her brother after high school and before college. I asked for her autograph because to me, anyone who can do this type of journey is made of some magnificent stuff. Ask Lauren if I can have her autograph when she’s done! ?

Oh, and Lauren has probably already seen many YouTube videos, but I HIGHLY recommend she watch Homemade Wanderlust. This is the channel of a young lady from Alabama who had completed the Triple Crown. She never backpacked EVER, them decided she would do the AT, and just did it. Great gear reviews and ideas, as well as common sense and safety info for women backpacking in remote (and populated) areas.

LOVE Natalie! I’ve seen her numerous times, both with the maniacs and solo. Her voice is like butter. Once when I was at a concert she was singing My Beloved Wife and the lady in the seat next to me had tears streaming down her face. That song combined with her voice is so moving.

Isn’t she amazing?! I’ve enjoyed her music since forever. Lucky you to have seen her live so many times! Her voice, combined with her lyrics and music, really gets you in the heart. ❤️ I was working in a surgery center back in the early 90’s and I would often play her softer songs as patients were being sedated.

SOTD = Memo Paris Italian Leather

I got my travel spray with the Twisted Lily 30% off discount. I oversprayed and am wafting a green tomato leaf and I GOT A COMPLIMENT! Woo hoo!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B9gkSGcB2-N/?igshid=6y1ii0jheeo2

In other news, I did login to do work on Saturday, but it took me a while to get through and of course I found out my anti-virus software just expired on 3/3. Got that straightened out. Logged in on Sunday, was almost done with something, then poof, lost connectivity and it took me a good 20 minutes to be back up and running. Needless to say, I am in the office today as I did not want to chance having the same issue!

For those who responded to my comment yesterday re: L’Heure Blanche split, it’s a big honking 125 bottle so most definitely, I can fulfill all who expressed interest to date. I’ll split up to 75 mLs. Will let you know cost next week.

Hoping to spend THIS year’s b’day $ today – Mom and I are heading to the Chanel counter at Saks in just a few minutes. Woohoo!

It’s 70 degrees here in March. I don’t ever remember the weather being so warm at this time of year. In the past, March was the time that we watched the snow melting. It’s very nice but weird. I went with Ganymede because it feels like spring.

It’s the continuously warmer temps. We’re usually watching the winter snow melt right now but still have occasional snow storm. Plus we don’t usually see 50-60 degree temps until April or May. Not too many winters ago, people in my area were buying roof rakes because the weight of snow and ice caused some roofs to cave in. One extreme to the other. Although, I prefer the mild weather.

Eau de Merveilles today because I had a strong craving and it’s perfect for this weather. Husband commented, “You should wear that more often. I love it…you should get more.”

Time change usually doesn’t bother me, but it just about killed me yesterday. Couldn’t get to sleep Sat night, so got back up and read for a while. Finally asleep around 3 am to get up with alarm at 7:30. Early church so I could hear a lecture and then do brunch. Slept over 9 hours last night…

My husband’s class was moved to Zoom for tomorrow night, so I’m thinking of going to movies. I’ve looked online, and the movie I’m interested in looks to be showing to a virtually empty theater.

An unexpectedly busy weekend, plus the time change REALLY messed me up this year, so no time to post on the weekend SOTD thread. I was just flattened by that hour, and I don’t know why.

However, a quick answer to at least one of the questions: not really lemming anything right now. I was naughty and ended up getting 6(!) of the perfume oil that Soivohle has on closeout right now. I haven’t tried any of them yet, but will sing out when I do.

I also did a fair amount of wedding chat with my engaged friends yesterday. Still sorting out all that we talked about. I think we did finally manage to dissuade the bride from wanting indoor pyrotechnics at the ceremony. NO sparklers!!!

SOTD = Ann Gerard Perle de Mousse EdP, from the sample stash. So pretty, and a perfect match for the warm, sunny, and decidedly springlike weather I have today. ???????

I’m wearing HdP Tubereuse 2 because it caught my eye as I rummaged about in a drawer. This is the “Virginale” version. It goes on a bit thick and syrupy but as it dries down, it just gets better and better, with a fair amount of spice to temper the sweet. I feel as if I’m wafting fairy dust and good cheer wherever I walk in it—even in the aisles of Home Depot. I visited there and two garden centers in my fruitless quest for the ideal birdbath, which I’m suddenly lemming for my tiny yard or outdoors hedge area. Imagine the hours of entertainment it will provide my kitties later on! I also want to plant, at least in pots, some flowers that bees and butterflies will enjoy.

    SotD = Gypsy Water . . .

. . . which smells a lot like Vanille Insensee on me. I guess that’s another perfume pair I should wear and compare for sniffs and giggles. 🙂

I like to think that Vita enjoyed many perfumes that came her way. So perhaps Byredo’s all-inclusive vibe would appeal to her. Or maybe she smelled like Jardin d’Ecrivain’s Orlando? 😉 I should seek that one out.

Lovely photo up top today. I would dearly love to visit Sissinghurst. The idea of planning and caring for the White Garden haunts me. I love gardening with an anything goes approach. Limiting colors to white, green, gray, and silver would be interesting to say the least.

I tried to do my front yard in all whites and silvers, but my husband is hard to control. He keeps sneaking things in, and I keep moving them.

It does not rival Sissinghurst by any stretch of the imagination, though…

I saw a flower garden all in white one time, it was incredible at sunrise.

And it seems to shimmer at dusk. One year I did all-white plants in my back yard; it was beautiful!

I’m with your husband – right now, we have a riot of hyacinths that are almost done in pinks and purples against a backdrop of red tulips. No color discipline whatsoever. I can certainly see how beautiful a more coordinated approach would be.

I like that too…we have a small front yard and a large back yard, so he has plenty of space for no color discipline 🙂

I pair Vanille Insensée and Gypsy water hair perfume all the time! Defo similar. On me Gypsy Water is more lemon where Vanille Insensée is more lime with the top, and Vanille Incensee middle notes for me last longer and are more my style, but the vanilla-sandalwood-amber base is very comparable.

agree agree agree! 😀 i love the lemon – lime comparison, both are great to my nose. I live for citrus top notes, lol. And like you I noticed that VI’s middle notes last longer than GW’s. I can’t decide which I like better, they’re both wonderful scents.

Robin – I just saw you tried Diptyque Eau Capitale today! What did you think of it?

I am surprised at how bold it is, since Diptyque rarely goes bold anymore. But I also don’t love it! Did you?

Unremarkable and won’t be joining the family.

Busy day today, plus feeling under the weather. I was twins with my daughter wearing SL something dulce? I’m too tired to get up and look. In my ongoing effort to buy perfume on a budget, I’ve been bidding at some auctions, but I keep getting outbid at the last minute. Even though I’m bidding at the last minute! I’m getting discouraged by the whole thing. Mainly because I think the people outbidding me are just going to resell at a profit, instead of giving it a loving home like I would ?

Tired twins! I hope this is the last time-change we have to endure.

I hear you on the auction bidding. I almost gave up on them due to being outbid at the very last second, like you. Someone told me that people are probably using a ‘sniping’ app where they can outbid even the highest bid at the very last second. I’m not about that; if it’s something I really want I usually get the ‘buy now’ auctions so there’s no disappointment!

If this happens to your frequently, check into Gixen – it’s a free auction sniping software. It will only bid as far as your maximum bid, so if you really want something, the maximum bid is still your best bet.
