Thursday scent of the day 3/5

Posted by Robin on 5 March 2020 202 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! Wash Your Hands! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm continuing my Astier de Villatte revisit (I tried these ages ago but didn't pay adequate attention) with Elixir du Dr. Flair. I almost bought Grand Chalet yesterday but the combination of breaking my 30-ml-max rule AND paying shipping has kept me from pulling the trigger. We'll see if I cave today.

Reminder: 3/6 is the The Day of the Dude. Take it easy, man.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing Dior Gris Montaigne. Another decant that is gone. I will stick with rapidly evaporating decants for a while to give myself the chance to enjoy and finish them.

I cleaned out my perfume cabinet recently and am sad at how many dried up decants I found 🙁

I organized my cabinet during the weekend and it was frustrating to find many beautiful decants completely gone and many of them I did not wear more than once or twice. Some I did not remember that I had. I cannot believe how fast they evaporate.

Oh no! I started doing this when I discovered a precious little decant of Chanel Gardenia extrait that I had been saving had dried up 🙁 I was sooooo sad. But I’ve been so desperately using up my decants that I never get to use my bottles!

I am going to drastically reduce the amount of decants I purchase. My goal now is to finish the ones that have 2mls or less. I am not so concerned about samples because I have so many that I will never finish them in this life. After I will stick with my full bottles. I need to be more selective and reduce my collection as much as I can. I will keep only the ones that I love. It may take a while, but I think I can do it.

I am with you on the no more decants and reducing the stash. I give away samples now after trying once.

I wore Gris Clair yesterday and it smelled so good I’m wearing it again today. I’ve said before that it’s like the smell version of having Pink Floyd as background music all day, in other words, pretty laid back.

I never understand that rationale, unless you’re less than like 6 bucks away from free shipping. Tacking on an extra 10+ $ worth of stuff to get free shipping costs more than the shipping!

I’d hate to have it all evaporate away and I can’t wear perfume to work so will need to keep collection small. (Okay, so I use a very small dab in hopes I’m the only one enjoying it! Shhhh…)

hi adanst! I wish I could tell you something about L’Ombre des Merveilles. Though I’m quite excited I haven’t tried it yet. (!!!)

I’m hoping the tonka takes a backseat, it can be a dealbreaker for me.

I love incense, and black tea usually hits the right notes so I’m feeling optimistic.

But it could go either way. Eau des Merveilles Bleu sounded great but was a disappointment for me. The white musk in the base overwhelms my nose.

Once I have a sniff I’ll report back for sure. 😀

A couple of lovely NST people sent me decants of 4711 Lavender and Thyme, and when my friends and I sniffed it, we agreed that it smelled like it could have medicinal qualities. (lol) Considering that lavender, thyme and alcohol all have antiseptic effects, it seems like that actually could be a pretty good sanitizer. 🙂

I was a little indecisive this morning: it was between LAP La Chasse because it’s cheerful and sunny, or PdE Le Cri, because it’s amazing (and also surprisingly no-brainer for me). I went with Le Cri but spritzed a bit of La Chasse on the back of my hand for some surreptitious sniffs ??

    Good morning all!
I just thunked my small Antonia decant today, so that’s what I’m wearing.
I just discovered that I like Eau des Merveilles Bleue, so I ordered a small bottle from the bay. At the first sniffs I thought it was too similar to the original EdM to warrant a separate bottle but obviously I changed my mind. I still think it bears a strong resemblance but it’s less salty to my nose.
Does anybody find it quite different from the original?

I found them very different. I’m opposite though, because I thought it was more salty. It’s my favorite from the line, which I think is also opposite of how most people think.

Agree with Lillyjo and Madtowngirl. It is more salty and mineral and different from the original. I also find it more long lasting on skin.

i have them both and I think they are quite different

For me Bleue is perfect on hot dry summer day. A swim in the ocean in a bottle ? (its an aquatic/marine scent that seems to work for people who usually dont like aquatics, like me haha)

EdM is sweeter and woodier to my nose ? ?

Thank you all for your input. I need to do another side by side comparison; I completely agree with the “swim in the ocean” part; maybe I just don’t know how to adequately describe what I’m smelling. I know that’s gotta be it. More practice is needed ?

Late to the party, but I am going to chime in! I also experience EdM and EdM Bleue very differently. EdM Bleue is salty and mineral-y to me. I agree with Jiji that it is an aquatic for aquatic haters. I can wear it, while the original EdM doesn’t agree with me at all.

Am being very Dude-ular this AM. A little Montale Saffron Oud and a little Montale Patchouli Leaves (which smells a little like dark chocolate and some generic fruit–not your boho’s patchouli!). Once these fade into the ether, I think I will indulge in some vintage Coco!

Cheap trick of the week is TJ’s Rose Oil Hand Cream in the metal tube. If you are washing your hands into oblivion, this one is handy to keep nearby.

    Eau des Merveilles.?
My haircut turned out great! Just in case anyone was wondering, lol. The stylist listened to what I wanted and I left with exactly what I envisioned.
In other, ranting news, this is the second week of my online nursing class and the instructor has yet to make an appearance in any of the online discussions, or grade my work from last week.? The class is only 6 weeks long so technically it is almost a third over. Such a disappointment from my two previous instructors. Part of me would like to get a hold of my advisor and complain (this isn’t free after all!) but I don’t want to risk retaliation in the form of a bad grade. Instead I’ll just vent to you all.?

Still crazy busy at work..but i am trying to live by the Dude’s philosophy. So I am ‘going with the flow’ in Sycomore edt.

A very short trip to the mall afrer work resulted in:
L’Ombre des Merveilles on my left hand
Elixir des Merveilles on my right hand

I really like how this line is exploring the mineral and salty and aspects of perfumery. A welcome antidote to the sweet scents most designer brands are releasing.

To be honest, I am not wowed by L’Ombre but it is not bad either. It is cold and rainy and I suspect this scent needs slightly warmer skin and weather to bloom.

Elixir is very nice, but not running to the store to get a bottle. Maybe because I already have Eau des Merveilles and this feels like the more cosy but also less sparkly and less outdoorsy sister ?

        No I dont think so.
Its sweeter and a bit more ‘grounded’, but still lightweight. And it sure has that ‘mineral-y’ spaceous Merveilles DNA.

I must add though, i am washing my hands a bit more often with all those viruses around, from common cold to corona. ?
So i washed it off after 3 hours and therefore did not get the ‘whole experience’.
I hope to try it again somewhere this weekend ! ?

It’s the second one of the line I’ve tried and I’m just not feeling it. Anyone a fan? SotD Hermes Jardin Après La Mousson. Need some calm for financial decisions/discussions today.

Mr. Teebear and I have been approved for the new apartment, but the building manager wants to start us at the new (higher) rate, and not do 2 months at the rate of the previous tenants whose lease we’d be helping cover by moving in in May. So we need to decide if that feels worth it.

Also meeting later today with our bank’s financial advisor to start talking about how to invest our savings better.

Do these kinds of meetings stress everyone else out insane amounts, or is it just me?

Management’s reasoning is that “they did the work” to look for a tenant to take over for May – even though they weren’t the ones to show us the apartment, and they only had shown the apartment to one other prospective tenant before we sent in our application. Did they really have to work that hard? Nah.

But… the housing market in our city is absolutely crazy right now with vacancy rates a fraction of what they used to be, so they don’t need to do us any favors.

And it’s still a huge upgrade for us in our living situation, as current apartment hasn’t been renovated since the 80s and building is 100+ yrs old and poorly insulated.

Back to Bois d’Iris for me today (TDC). My 50 ml bottle is getting dangerously low. Can’t believe that I expressed doubts (in comments on NST) about having bought it!

Thanks for all the kind date-i-versary wishes yesterday!

Will you get another bottle of the TDC?

Almost certainly. I’ve been in “no-buy” mode for just about everything, including perfume, but this has become such a staple for me that I have a hard time imagining not having it.

Jolie Madam for me tonight; hopefully Dude approved..

It’s my Friday, so tomorrow my co-worker friend and I are going to the recently opened garden centre to look around (woo hoo). She has a huge yard so it’s always fun to go there with her. We also are going to Lee Valley Tools, Winners and maybe to Sephora if we have time! Then lunch at the pub afterwards!

    Happy weekend everyone.

I wonder what other colors that bottle would look good in?

Jicky in the morning. I’ll figure out something soothing for bedtime. Maybe a vanilla fragrance…
