Tuesday scent of the day 2/25

Posted by Robin on 25 February 2020 235 Comments

Happy Fat Tuesday! It’s also George Harrison’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando this morning, and drinking a cup of Numi Chinese Breakfast. (I am also still out of town, and I'm behind on comments again.)

Reminder: 2/28 will be Unicorn Friday...wear a perfume you suspect no one else (or almost no one else) on Now Smell This owns, or something that you very rarely see worn or mentioned. Suggested by Oakland Fresca.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Fred Float Tea Unicorn Infuser ("Sit back, relax and let this unicorn pool toy-shaped tea infuser do all the work. Simply fill the stainless steel bottom with your favorite loose leaf tea, twist on the top and let it float on top of a mug of hot water.") is $15 at Sur La Table.

Not in a unicorn, at least not in my book. Wearing Paris YSL, because someone wore Opium yesterday. Finished my Paris body cream and added some Eau de Parfum on top, to keep things very rosy indeed.

Tea is an Assam Marangi Second Flush and a lot of letters (SFTGFOP 1). It’s good.

Adrienne Vittadini Adrienne Vittadini edp from a mini that must be 20 years old. I’m pretty sure this has been discontinued because bottles on the bay are pretty expensive. I wore this perfume when I was pregnant with my college girl. I remember smelling it at a perfume counter at Boston Store (rip) when I was on a shopping weekend with my mom. I loved it and bought a bottle on the spot and wore it everyday until it was gone. That’s how I used to wear perfume once upon a time, one scent at a time. Good scent memories associated with this one.☺️

Wow! It is amazing the shelf life of some perfumes.

And that is exactly how I used to wear perfume.

As I said yesterday, I am making my own interpretation of the cp for this week by wearing perfumes that many of us have (or maybe not) and that nobody wears or reports that is wearing anymore, myself included.

Today, I am in Calvin Klein Obsession. The perfume that when I smelled being a teenager changed my whole world forever. Many, many moons later I was finally able to afford a full bottle. My first perfume purchase. I love it, it has the most especial place in my heart, it must be in my collection forever, but I don’t reach for it anymore. I don’t even remember when was the last time I wore it. Years ago, for sure. Some day I will get a vintage bottle, because at that time it was really glorious!

Fun twist to the CP! I used to wear Obsession as well and a friend of mine practically bathed in it and I think of her every time I smell it now. It’s a gorgeous classic.

Thanks! I am almost sure I will not see anyone wearing any of those huge classics here this week. Obsession is gorgeous! The bottle that I have is from 2007 and is still very nice compared to the actual formulation. But nothing beats the beauty of the vintage.

I’d be happy to send you some if you’re interested. I think they did a good job keeping the backbone of the original, and I remember preferring the Sheer just a bit, but I haven’t smelled the original for a long time.

You smell fantastic! Obsession is my most special perfume too, my husband and college bestie associate this perfume with me. If I HAD to get rid of all of my perfumes but one, this would be it. My bottle is vintage, from before Calvin Klein sold to Coty(?) I also have a vintage mini of the squatty bottle and that one has gotten very concentrated and rich over time.

Thank you! The mini vintage that you have is a treasure! I usually say that if I have to get rid of all my perfumes I would keep an iris scent. But at the end I always come to the conclusion that Obsession will be the winner for sentimental reasons and because it is wonderful!

Is the mini the one with a caramel brown top that looks like a nipple? If yes, I hope I did not give mine away pre-perfumista ?. My earliest minis were Obsession and Liz Claiborne (triangular with yellow red and blue piping).

Yes! That’s the one, I hope you didn’t get rid of it either. That concentrated version is even better than the spray. When I first started buying Obsession I think (?) it only came in those squatty bottles and was labeled cologne. I loved the way it looked sitting on my dresser.
I remember Liz Claiborne too, my Walgreens still carries it!

I still have my Obsession sample that I received from somewhere many moons ago, and have not yet cracked it open – saving it for whatever reason, nostalgia and all. I remember also owning an Imposter Obsession called Sensation waaaaay back in high school, and boy did my classmates know I was around in that stuff! I loved it anyway, ha!

I’m in Gucci EDP today, and wore Nanadebary Bronze yesterday. Very seldom see either mentioned by anybody (aside from me) on this site, but when I mention them there’s usually at least one person who says, “oh yeah, THAT one” (or words to that effect), so … semi-unicorns? I love them both and wear them regularly.

Ha, I’ve definitely been that person when you’ve worn both perfumes. It was because you posted about wearing the Nanadebary that I wore it last month. I have bottles of Bronze and Gucci EDP, but I don’t wear them as often as I should. I’ve had two decants of the Gucci since MUA swapping days, and they’ll probably still last me a while since the perfume is strong. I bought a partial bottle from eBay last year, but sadly the sprayer is wonky. I think I’ll eventually use a syringe to decant it.

Got home from my aunt’s yesterday morning and had to go to work shortly after. It was pretty awesome to sleep in my own bed last night and spending the morning in Theorema. After my shower, I think vintage BaV will suit. Good news is that it looks like my Sephora package will arrive tomorrow.

I love that you can get samples at Sephora, 3 tops, and they can’t refuse you. My last and final trip to L&T consisted of the cosmetics dept. floor manager getting snooty with me and telling me that they will no longer be able to give samples out unless I bought something. And I had been stopping in there every few months or so to test ‘n’ sniff for years. Macy’s doesn’t do that (yet).

Hello! My plan for this week is to try to “stump” the group, so do comment if you own one of these! I expect this will be a challenge.

Today I am wearing Slumberhouse Vikt. My husband and I are sampling our way through the amaro spirits at a local restaurant, and we tried one this week called Santa Maria that reminded me a lot of Vikt’s dark herbs and resin. I wish this hadn’t been discontinued – I’d stretch my budget to buy it at regular Slumberhouse prices, but the Slumberhouse aftermarket is way beyond me.

Yesterday I wore EL Celadon, which really was a unicorn for me. I loved the description and thought I’d never get to try it, but an EBay saved search notification can be a wonderful thing, and I got some really cheaply. Yesterday morning I was liking-not-loving it and thinking I’d sell it, but last night in bed the drydown was so lovely that now I must keep it.

    Good morning Y’all!

I’m working thru some forgotten samples this week and today I settled on La Maison de la Vanille’s Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar. The note list includes several florals, incense, and sandalwood, but honestly all I get is straight up vanilla extract. That being said, it’s a yummy sweet marshmallowy vanilla extract and I’m loving it at the moment. Would I pay $60 for a full bottle? It can always go on the perpetual buy list, and we’ll see what happens…. 🙂

Twins! I finally got to try this. I was kind of apprehensive about specifically seeking it out to try (I’m new to perfumeland, have mercy), as there are a lot of different opinions about this one. Reminds me somewhat of Chypre Rouge at the beginning, but the drydown is much nicer. I actually really like this one.
On seeking out things to try, I have definitely decided that I like the older formulations. Got samples with a recent skincare buy of the newer JHAG perfumes and I find them all either harsh or generic. Not that I’m a great expert, but for me personally older is nicer.

I went into my “given by Mom, to her regret” bottles for Avon Cotillion Spray Essence. Early in this perfume phase of mine (2017?), Mom gave me a couple of bottles of perfume she didn’t wear. My guess is that they’re from the 1960s. The bottle for Cotillion is a flattened sphere of clear glass. The juice is amber-colored, but that’s probably from age. The neck of the bottle is pink, and the cap is gold-colored, shaped like a top hat, but flaring wider at the top.

The “to her regret” part came in more for Avon Persian Wood Cologne Mist. When I tried that, the sprayer got stuck in the open position for a bit, and the house smelled like the Avon take on Persian Wood for a while. That’s in a red bottle, opaque plastic, curving down from the top to a smaller flat base. The cap is rounded also, and comes to a point on top. The cap is gold-colored.

Those of you of a mature age will likely remember Avon products from the 1960s. Mom was an Avon lady in college and before she got her first job as a librarian, if I remember what she said correctly.

My very first bottle of perfume was Avon Field Flowers which my mom bought for me because she realized that I was secretly spritzing from her perfume bottles. I started this behavior when I was three ?

The Avons from the 60s-80s were amazing! Moonwind, Charisma, Timeless, Candid, Ariane, Sweet Honesty, etc, etc. I remember Persian Wood and Cotillion and am fairly certain that I had the later.

I’ve got a small box of Avon treasures that I must pull out of a drawer to wear later this week. They are packaged as little jewels in a velvet container. I found this at an antique shop and don’t know how old it is but my guess would also be 1960’s. They smell gorgeous! I’ll report in later.

Oh lucky you! They sound magical. I am certainly of the ‘mature age crowd’ and giggle at that because it’s just SOOOOO fun not to act your age. I remember the perfumes and makeup very well and Bonnie bell and Noxema, Bonnie Bell and Sea Breeze. All were staples in my bathroom. My fondest memories are of practicing cat-eyes with Yardley eyeliner endlessly.
Avon makes me smile, Mom had many but are now long gone. Enjoy!!

I’m pretty sure that my mom had Charisma, Moonwind, and Timeless back in the day. She now swears that she never, ever wore perfume in her life.

Mom doesn’t deny that she liked certain fragrant bath and body products back in the day. She still has a bottle of Yardley London April Violets splash, and she had honeysuckle-scented powder, and used various bath oils back when. I remember a lilac perfume or soap she had, too.

She’s been allergic to lanolin for a long, long time, and never could wear wool except if it was lined with another material. So she had to be careful to check the ingredients on lotions all along. Then in the last couple of decades, she seemed to react to having fragrances on her skin, and basically cut down to using a hypoallergenic lotion.

Here I’ll do a crowd-source question, since several of you have fond memories of Avon products of the 1960s and later. 🙂 Mom’s mother used a lotion that I think was in a yellow bottle with white accents and writing(?). I found that a very pleasant scent. It was relatively subtle, I think, and stayed pretty close to her skin. I remember she’d put cream or lotion on her face after her morning bath. I’d like to get ideas about what the lotion in the yellow bottle might have been. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Noting that a Basenotes review of Persian Wood mentions that one early version had a bottle that was opaque due to being painted with rubberized paint. That sounds about right for how the bottle feels to me. I feel like I can get a good, comfortable grip on the bottle due to its texture.

My CP sotd is Rundholz 03 Apr. 1968. It smells of apple and smoke. My friend Brian gave me 5 ml and I thought it was FBW but changed my mind. I do enjoy wearing my decant in the winter.

    Official notes: litchi, heliotrope, olibanum.

Oooh. That sounds intriguing, and all the more so since I just read a five star review of it on Luckyscent: “its smells like a homeless person hugging a incense cone,” By DARLA – Funeral Director From Towson, Md” !!! But what is the deal with the date names of Rundholz perfumes?

The dates are family members’ birthdates or other significant dates to the creator IIRC.

My unicorn perfume for the CP today is Boucheron Initial. I don’t recall seeing anyone else on here mentioning it ever. It is gorgeous! My bottle is old but the juice is still quite beautiful. A spicy and peppery mix of florals with patchouli and honey and orange. I used to wear it all the time; since the bottle is small and opaque (pearly white), I have no idea if there’s much left in it, and I try to preserve it for very special occasions. It’s sophisticated and dressy.

    Wearing Jubilation xxv,
A grey prince of wales checkered pencil skirt, black heeled booties….

Funny how an outfit like that makes you stand out from the crowd nowadays. This used to be normal office wear a few decades ago.
I dont think its wrong btw because I love that I can wear jeans/pants/trousers whatever and loose fit sweaters to work as well. ?

(Btw I decided I needed a pencil skirt when I saw Karen Page’s outfits in Daredevil)

My unicorn perfume of the day is MOR Marshmallow. It’s sweet candy floss rose petals and musk with a spicy aspect from carmation. My bottle is at least 10 years old and has evaporated some and become richer. I think I got it in a MakeupAlley swap, or it could have been an eBay purchase.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I celebrated 14 years together. Tonight we’re going out for an Italian dinner since the restaurant we wanted to eat at is closed Mondays.

OMG ?! Yesterday, I was stuck in an elevator for 15 seconds with this woman who must have dumped half a bottle of Angel on herself. My coat, hair and tongue got contaminated. Next, walking to get lunch, a woman brushed past me reeking of BEEG Angel; this time, it was easier to escape the fumes since I was outside ?. Finally, as I neared Penn Station to catch my train, I somehow ended up behind another copious Angel wearer! What were the chances? I thought NYC was Santal 33 territory ?.

    Rest in Peace George Harrison.
Can a Beatle be underappreciated? Somehow Harrison is remembered mostly for only one song. Despite any amazing film career (Hard Day’s Night,* Help, (as actor) Yellow Submarine (as musician), and an amazing career producing many of the best movies of the 70’s -80’s (Life of Brian, Mona Lisa) the Academy Awards did not even mention his passing in that year’s “Memorial section.
    * Harrison reportedly came up with the idea for the hilarious scene where he shows up at an advertising agency which claims that it is touch with the hip young demographic and the marketing guys nevertheless fail to recognize that one of the four most popular young hip guys in the country is sitting right in front of them.

Wearing Elysium (the original “male” version).

A few months ago I checked out of the library a beautiful coffee table book called “George Harrison – Living in the Material World”. It goes thru his early fame with Beatles and his solo career, and the latter part of the book describes his growing interest and participation in eastern mysticism and spirituality and such. Gorgeous photographs too. (and I also love “Here comes the Sun”.)

Kenzo eau d’ete, modern muse le rouge, iris nobile, bucheron place vendome, basically anything mainstream that’s mostly floral and not too loud. Otherwise I just wear a drop my preferred woody, masculine scents like SL Chene(FB). Or lots of drops of 28 la Pausa (sample).

Wearing Honeysuckle Bird which I don’t recall anyone else mentioning. Actually, I usually don’t see any Soivohle scents mentioned. Yesterday I was commando except for sunscreen and salt water (catamaran sail, snorkeling, hanging out in the ocean) but apparently not enough sunscreen since I’ m quite pink. Today we slept until noon and are mostly staying in until we leave for a farm to table experience at a different hotel

I had a sample of Honeysuckle Bird several years ago. I like it quite a lot but never bought it.
I’ve heard/read Jalapeno mention Liz Zorn samples quite often in the past.

thegoddessrena is the person who got me interested in Soivohle perfumes a few years ago. Her descriptions created a lemming stampede. I now have both small bottles and samples of quite a few Soivohle scents.

Don’t think it’s a unicorn, but I needed to wear Climat finally, after getting it from the freebie meet. Nice!

Had to wait awhile to spritz it on because….the real unicorn of the day is the fact I went to the gym for the first time in forever. Just easy peasy on the elliptical, some stretches, sit ups and squats. Hoping to do more weight work soon.

I’m sure that some of NSTers have this perfume in their collection but I don’t remember seeing it in SOTD threads in a while: Belle Du Soir created by Le Labo for Anthropologie in 2010. Today it doesn’t lean masculine as it does sometimes, and I keep wondering why I don’t wear it more often.

I had a post about two of perfumes from this line years ago: https://undina.com/2013/08/22/le-labo-belle-du-soir-and-poudre-dorient/ (not that it matters now since the only place these can be found is eBay, more expensive than were their MSRP, and I don’t think they were out long enough to get loyal fans who’d want to pay those prices; and it’s not a blind-buy candidate).

I probably should’ve saved this for Friday, but I was digging around in my minis for unicorns and found this one: Rykiel Woman (Not for Men!). Don’t see this mentioned. It does, indeed, smell like Barbara Bui, but with a dose of black pepper.
Had the day off, recovering from a tooth extraction. So far, not too bad…

Cheating today in a genuine unicorn made in Singapore from Jetaime Perfumery, where I got a custom perfume made from orchid oils this winter. It’s a great experience and one I highly recommend if you’re in SG.

The main note is Nun’s Hood orchid which has a wonderful spicy scent, but obviously the scent is also quite floral and vanillic as well. Not great longevity but super unique and brings back great memories.

I have lots of the orchid one actually if anyone is in Canada and wants a sample!

My second bespoke (from a different perfumery, much smaller bottle) was, sadly, completely gone in 6 weeks because I was changing cities every night for 4 weeks running, and it was constantly being stored sideways or upside down ?

The perks of work travel: getting to have experiences like that.
The downside of work travel: you don’t always get to decide when you’re going home ?

SoTD: MM Whispers in the Library. This is a small decant from Sephora.
It is primarily vanilla and alittle bit of woods, sweet and not really that ‘soft’ and I like it somehow. It is cozy it is not normally my thing. It is my unicorn.
