Wednesday scent of the day 1/22

Posted by Robin on 22 January 2020 321 Comments

Hump Day, and RIP Terry Jones. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Givenchy Organza Indecence, hat tip to Laura!

Reminder: on 1/24, you're Among Friends...wear a fragrance someone else wore in the scent of the day polls this week. Suggested by Regina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Ariana Grande for Givenchy, 2019.

Eau Duelle – copying madtowngirl (Monday).
Organza Indecence is great. If I find my decant, I will wear it too this week.

I’m wearing Terracotta today, because I know a lot of you own it and to give people in warmer climes something to wear Friday! I had planned to wear more popular/accessible perfumes all week so the CP doesn’t feel exclusionary, but I forgot because I was on vacation and wore two discontinued things, le oops. (Fresh Index Fig Apricot and Tauer Lonesome Rider – to which you all reacted with so much surprise that I feel I should add that I am not SURE is discontinued, it’s just disappeared from all the online retailers and the Tauer website.)

Last year, there were also some rumors that LR was discontinued. At the time, I asked Andy about it and he told me the rumors were unfounded. One can only hope that’s what’s happening now, too!

My FIL is planning to go back soon so I am savoring my my chai tea this morning and getting ready for my Italian lesson.

With my free afternoon I am not sure if I should go to the Met/Guggenheim or watch a Bollywood film. Or just read quietly at home.

Last night I saw the Book of Mormon on Broadway. Almost peed my pants with laughter.

He suffered from a type of frontotemporal dementia which in his case meant he could no longer read, write or really speak, Such a horrible thing to happen to someone whose work consisted of words.
I just adore Python, and these days with the madness happening all around us, their sketches don’t seem that strange somehow.

Well today I pulled out my sample of Guerlain AA Ginger Piccante from the very special Hajusuuri and I LOVE LOVE IT ? ? ? ?!
It is exactly as advertised and the rose is really beautiful when it arrives, the ginger is nice and fresh and I really think I need to own this one because I can see me wearing it all summer long (as Kid Rock says). ???There’s a lot of juice here and the bottle is pretty and I have no clue what the CP is this week but I miss you guys and love this.
Thanks Hajusuuri. You Rock – as Kid also says 😉

          Yasmina,
I love Coromandel (I have it in the EDT as well) and it was an easy love for me from the start. I find it very easy to wear and think it fits most occasions.
BdL took some years to work it’s magic (sandalwood can be challenging for me in certain compositions).
I prefer both in cold weather though.

        • madtowngirl says:
          22 January 2020 at 1:52 pm

Ooh, that is a tough call! I pulled out my decants of each and sprayed the back of my hands so I could really compare. They are both so good…. the sandalwood in BdI is so smooth, but Coromandel is truly stunning. I had my college daughter sniff each and she picked Coromandel immediately and without hesitation. I’m no help, I think you probably need both.??

Wearing Philosykos today which I believe was worn by a few yesterday so I’m actually doing this week’s project! Maybe a first, or second.

Hot water is out this morn in the office kitchen which means no tea! I’m going to check on this again shortly but I find this totally and completely unacceptable! 🙂 But, there are bagels + fruit :))

Stopped in Macy’s yesterday looking for a bday gift for my mom. Wow, are those fragrance sales guys & gals aggressive. Not an enjoyable experience at all. And the whole fragrance dept. is depressing in general. They really would benefit greatly by focusing on how they display stuff. Take a page from Saks and their new beauty/fragrance floor.

Two different experiences for sure. I avoid Macy’s to purchase any frangrance because it is intimidating and very stressful to deal with sales people. And I agree that their fragrance displays are terrible. I enjoy going to Saks beauty floor. No pressure from the sales people, they are very helpful when needed and it is a pleasure to the eyes to walk around.

Interesting to read this. At the Saks in the Houston Galleria, the fragrance displays are beautiful but the SA’s are pretty aggressive. Since I bought that expensive McQueen bottle one time, when I go there now (not like this is a regular thing!) they make a beeline for me. On the plus side, they’re fairly generous with samples.

Our morning temp wasn’t actually too bad, my parents are on the gulf coast of Florida and were only a couple degrees warmer than here! I kind of had to giggle that they drove for two days to get away from the cold and it seems to have followed them.

My boys love Monty Python (and Curb Your Enthusiasm). We have both series on DVD and the youngest said the other night that he wonders whether they like it “because they grew up with it”.
SOTD: I’m tagging Lucasai with Amyitis. This is an easy CP.

Woke up in Chanel no 22 extrait but switched to Deneuve extrait. Just the teeniest dab because it’s pretty potent and I am going to work. Even the edt is potent. I just love Deneuve and wish it wasn’t discontinued.

? Always look on the bright side of life ? RIP Terry Jones. I didn’t know he had Alzheimer’s.
I’m wearing Eight &Bob Champs de Provence, which is a pleasant mostly-orange blossom, but I think they put all the effort into the top notes which are juicy, citrusy, and very uplifting. The drydown is kind of meh and a bit bitter/metallic.

I wonder at what point did perfumers stop perfuming the mid and drydown of perfume? It’s so disappointing to get meh after a great opening.

I think for departments store stuff it makes sense since most non perfumistas will judge (and buy) a perfume from what they smell straight out of the bottle. I actually have the same experience with many (but not all) of the TF private blends.

Oh man do I love ‘Life of Brian.” I think it must be time to watch it again!

Incidentally, did you read the wackadoodle thing Terry Gilliam said about the Black Panther movie? He thought it wasn’t realistic and hence it was misleading. (I am paraphrasing–his words were pretty colorful, and not in a good way.) Made me sad that such a funny man could be so humorless, and worse.

I remember reading something, but don’t remember his specific gripes re BP. But I think Scorcese said something similar? At least that they were anti-Marvel franchise in general.

I love Life of Brian and repeat watching are always a good thing!

In Les Annees BIS today–not sure if anyone was wearing it yesterday, but there was much talk about it over the weekend, and besides, I received my sample from hajusuuri, which I feel is kind of on-theme 🙂

This perfume is beautiful but doesn’t feel like me. I think a small sample is the right amount of this stuff for me to have.

In other news, I consistently forget to put on my engagement ring in the morning (and the two beautiful little rings I got this weekend!). I think I’d like a little bedside ceramic ring bowl, but I’m having trouble seeing what I want in my head. Do you have favorite ceramic artists who have online stores? I’d love some links. I’m also considering some kind of stone finger (I love crystals!).

It would definitely make it feel more special.? Do you know someone who does that sort of thing? My guess is they would be flattered if you asked them. Maybe you could ask it they’ve ever done something like that and if they have examples of their work they could show you.

RIP Terry Jones and a slightly belated RIP to Neil Peart.
The radiology dept of my doctor’s got my insurance figured out, so I was able to get my mammogram this morning.
Wearing No.19 edp today and feeling a bit spring feverish. I’m taking cp points by copying Hajusuuri from many sotd posts ? honestly, if it were not for her, I probably would not have revisited it after so many years of thinking I did not like green fragrance. Turns out I do!

Neil Peart’s death hit me harder than I ever would have imagined. From ages 12-17, I spent most of my free time locked in my bedroom listening to Rush and Pink Floyd, and reading.

I first explored Ayn Rand and philosophy in a very big way while looking up all the Rush references in my Unabridged Webster’s Dictionary (that weighed about 10 pounds).

We hosted some Irish musicians and one of them stayed in my bedroom, and apparently really like my LP collection. Ah, the teenage years.

Smelling great in #19, and hope mammogram is very unexceptional!

I think it really says something about how Karl Lagerfeld became so successful that he turned even his beloved kitten into a profit center (with sales of more than $3 million in 2015).

Or a really sad comment (1) on the fact that his major relationship appears to have been to a cat (nothing against pets, but we should have at least one solid relationship with a member of our own species-as miserable and complicated as we are), and really sadcomment (2) that even this relationship was partially based upon commerce and (3) a really sad comment that he seems to have regarded the cat as an objected to receive bizzarely human spoiling. (Surely a cat prefers an opportunity to chase mice to have a personal human attendant.

In Zoologist Squid today which is – crushingly – not nearly so nice on my skin as on blotter/other people.

The notes were so distinct at the beginning that I felt like I was hopping from Szechuan calamari to Orthodox Church to a brothel. After a few hours it calmed down but not the one for me, which is a shame as it’s a stunning fragrance!

Right??? Squid smells SO good on my bestie but for some reason the notes came at me in such separated waves when it first went on the skin that they created VERY distinct mental associations instead of feeling like they belonged to the same story. Not to worry, I still have samples of Elephant and Hyrax to try ?

In Baiser de Russie, which I got in a swap on NST. This decant is in a pretty ribboned-glass sprayer. I’m getting to the bottom of the decant–I think I’ll miss the glass even more than the perfume. Anyone ever reuse glass decant bottles (but the spray mechanism, of course, is plastic)?

Also, has anyone else experienced a total stoppage of email alerts to the comments they leave on NST? For about 6 months now I gamely click on “subscribe to comments for this post” but to no avail. I used to get email notices. No biggie. Just wondering.

Vetiver is my favorite note! I smelled once Vetiver Oriental and honestly I don’t remember how it was, but I feel you when you say why bother wearing anything else.
I even bought Java, bourbon and Haitian Vetiver oils; I have mixed some oil with alcohol and I wear sometimes vetiver pure perfume ? and I’ve also made myself a small perfume with vetiver, petitgrain and lime oils diluted in alcohol…again like pure perfume strength because why not??

It took a little while for vetiver to win me over. When I tried Vetiver Tonka early in my perfume exploration, I thought, “Ok, nice, but what’s the big deal?” But somehow it kept working on me! VO is probably my favorite right now, but that probably has a lot to do with the season.

I was planning to pull out a sample of Bengale Rouge, but I think I gave away whatever I had so I’m copying Jiji in Parfum Satori Satori. I’d like to try this sprayed, but will probably never get to putting my sample into an empty spritzer. I’ve also set aside Petits Papiers which is the only other sample in that particular pile that spoke to me. If someone wears it tomorrow I can copy them, right?

Chores today, then I’ve decided to head north tomorrow morning to Kaibab National Forest to camp and tootle around some BLM lands on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. I may see a bit of snow up there because the temps are in the 20’s at night, daytime in the 40’s. Hoping most tourists will give the area a pass due to unfriendly temps! ??

A confession and a poll…I hardly ever read collateral materials included with FB or sample purchases. So, when She-ra mentioned a while ago that Solstice Scents recommends letting samples rest for some time (I don’t recall for how long), imagine me emitting the “huh?” sound like Scooby-Doo. I either rip open the package and start sniffing or I let them rest inadvertently from neglect. In any case, I’m wondering what YOU do – do you give your samples or bottles time to rest before digging in or do you just open them whenever you’re led to open them regardless of rest period? I’ll be repeating this poll in IG at some point. Thank you!

My two cents: I think it is a bit lame to sell perfume you expect the consumer to “cellar” before drinking…errrr…wearing. If it is not the optimized product, then don’t sell it. I just feel like perfume is a beauty product that you buy, expecting to use.

I’ve done this with some perfume oils, although not intentionally. I do think over time the ingredients macerate and blend together better. Most of my spray perfumes have become better over time as well, other than a couple decants that I think were contaminated and just didn’t survive the decanting process well.

I did not even think about oils vs perfume! I found some neglected decants where the oils separated from the water or alcohol – very unattractive.

I’m pretty much like you. If I want to try a sample, I try it right away. Otherwise, it gets tossed into sample bowl and I’ll kill it out when digging around…could be months later.

Seems odd you’d have to wait to try or wear something you bought. I know SSS let the scents macerate for quite awhile before they finally started shipping.

I rarely try samples immediately. Usually, since I receive them in the office, I wait until the end of the day, then at home might sniff some/all if they are in a dab vial. Otherwise, I’d try them one or two at a time over the next several days, either savoring the pleasure (if those that I got are good) or hoping for the miracle (if the previous ones didn’t work out) 😉 .
I never open a new bottle before weeks into getting it. But I usually have either a previous sample or decant of it that I try to finish first.

I do think if it’s been sitting out in the cold, you should let it warm up. I ordered a bottle of Cuir de Lancome in winter (for a split) and when I tested it after opening it, I could barely smell anything -which totally freaked me out that it was fake or diluted or something. I let it sit over night and tried it again the next day and it smelled totally like it should.

To try or not to try new perfume samples, that is the question. For me, it is mood dependent. Also, if my life has gone off the scale on the Crazy Index, I am less likely to try an unknown perfume. Sometimes I rip into them right away. Other times, the poor things can languish for months. Intentionally letting perfume samples sit? Only if I have tried something in one season (say winter) and I am wanting to try it in another (like summer).

I normally rip my packages open in an OCD frenzy and spray all the samples at once all over both arms. But lately I’ve been more selective, testing them more slowly, so I can form a real opinion after one try and ditch the losers into a give away bag.

Someone wore Allure either earlier this week or last week. I looked but couldn’t find who. But that’s what I’m wearing – EdP. This one is one of those scents I ignored until a free bottle fell into my lap. Peachy, citrus, all sorts of yummyness. No way would I wear this on sweatpants day….

They should have named it like that! It’s impossible to navigate in all their Narciso, Narciso Rodriguez for Her, etc., etc.
You smell nice. I hope your migraine behaves.

I’m having a bit of a Parfums Delrae week. Today I’m in Debut. It’s not really up my alley and I’m rather surprised that I purchased it, although I do like it. It’s a little too flowery with notes that I often find too screechy, lily-of-the-valley and linden blossom. Indeed, I can remember walking under linden trees in some places I lived where the smell actually made me queasy. Nevertheless, in this blend those notes are tempered, perhaps by the lime (citrus lime, that is). Now I noticed that the notes on Fragrantica include cyclamen. Hmmm. I have some cyclamen in pots out on my porch and went to sniff them. (Cyclamen is a commonly planted winter flower around here, along with pansies and snapdragons.) No smell at all, which is what I thought. That’s puzzling. It’s rainy and chilly here, but I’m off to get my new glasses! Can’t wait.

We are house twins. I actually like Début, not my favourite DelRae though, that honour goes to Amoureuse. I’m so glad I snatched a BUB of that on ebay when that was still possible.

I’m in Bois de Paradis, which is my favorite from this house (followed closely by Amoureuse). I am sad that I do not have a BUB of either. But really, it’ll take the rest of my life to wear the perfume stash in my cabinets and drawers, so I shouldn’t complain. Too much.

I grabbed Anatole Lebreton Perfumista essentially at random from my sample saucer and it is extremely linear on me, which I was surprised by after what I’d read about it?

    Late check-in again, but I made it….

Yesterday I pulled out my heavier winter coat (that I rarely use because it doesn’t get THAT cold here in Atlanta all that often), and in the pocket was my Scentbird sample of Juliette Has a Gun Moscow Mule. LOVE THIS STUFF! I had completely forgotten it for at least a year, and I’m glad to put in back in rotation now…..

I’ve been fighting a headache all afternoon today. Bleah. Not sure why either. I have taken some Advil, and am waiting for it to kick in and provide some relief. ?

My friend in hospital is making slow progress. Hopefully she gets to come home this weekend.

SOTD = Relique d’Amour EdP. I’m getting close to thunking the sample. Hopefully it won’t be one of those magical samples that is harder to use up as the perfume level drops down.

December just flew by, so why is January SO SLOW!?

This past 2 weeks I have twice had perfume compliments (this never happens). Firstly for Molinard “Habanita” and then today for Amouage “Interlude Man”. The Amouage was an absolute favourite of mine for years, bought in small decants. I am gutted that the FB I bought is reformulated and I will never again smell that persistent incense ash note that was so comforting. Anyway, it turns out someone liked it today.

The Other Mister Koenigsberg and I are busy setting ourselves up for proper, permanent life in Spain. This week has been about setting up a Spanish limited company so I can continue to freelance within the Spanish tax system. I am in spreadsheet heaven working on the new business financial model, yay!

It’s cold this week in Duesseldorf, and Malaga has been grey and rainy (but escaped Storm Gloria that brought wind and snow a bit further east). We are only 3 weeks into January and work is already hectic. Roll on February! :^D

I’m back in posting purgatory again… the smallest software update or security change seems to completely blow up my ability to post here. Sigh… I’ll be shocked if this goes up, but just in case… today I’ve tried out Eight & Bob edt, Parfums de Marly Layton, and Fort & Manle Rose Harem. None have won me over. I’m going to scrub down for the evening and maybe put on a little Queen body butter for bedtime.

Be safe, well, and warm, y’all!
