Monday scent of the day 1/13

Posted by Robin on 13 January 2020 206 Comments

Alas, it's another Monday. (And a quick PSA: the freebiemeet is coming up on Saturday!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando except for some Weleda Sea Buckthorn body lotion.

Reminder: on 1/17, wear a fragrance with immortelle, if you have one. Suggested by Hamamelis.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The cold is back. Few sprays of Hermes Ambre Narguile and on my 3rd cup of coffee to wake me up. Feeling tired and under the weather today. Hope the day improves!

One day it’s spring, the next day it’s winter here. So confusing for the body… I was reading in the WSJ this morning that some of the cherry blossoms started to come out in Central Park because of the warm temperatures. So even the foliage is confused…

Some crocuses in my area have started blooming already. Too soon for thatl! Kind of confusing and depressing!

I hear you. I remember living in NY and experiencing such joy at the first crocuses poking thru the snow. It seems very early for that!

There is nothing more beautiful than crocuses and snowdropspoking thru the snow, usually late in February. That is a sign of hope for me that spring is around the corner after a harsh cold season. We have not really started “winter” here yet. Sigh!

My daffodils have started putting up foliage. I really hate to see Mother Nature playing tricks on her own offspring!

I plan to wear three scents with immortelle this week, and I am saving them for later.
Today I am wearing Dana Tabu. Animalic amber. A bit too animalic for my taste, so while I will finish my sample, I won’t buy more.

I am sipping Chai tea this morning. Not as much ginger as my FIL usually makes it, but I will never complain..never 🙂

I am in Bijou Romantique this morning, and I think after wearing Shalimar for over a week straight the initial opening of BR was so sweet I nearly almost got an immediate headache. It has calmed down a bit.

I listening to the announcements of the Oscars this morning and was not impressed. Usually I go running to the movie theater when they make their announcement but I am underwhelmed. I saw a few on the list, but none moved me…

The list seemed quite prosaic to me…highly predictable. As usual. I couldn’t believe no nominations for A Hidden Life.

      It’s amusing…my husband disliked 1917 quite intensely.

Same here. I checked the nominations to see what I wanted to see, but nothing excited me. I started watching The Irishman (3 hours!) at home a couple of weeks ago, and while it’s good, well acted, etc, I haven’t gone back to finish it. I think I might be over mafia movies.

I generally think Scorsese has just about covered that genre as much as he needs to….

I’m also not interested in The Irishman, but I think this criticism is unfair. Think of the many other interesting things he’s done, such as Hugo, The Silence, The Age of Innocence, Last Temptation of Christ, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, plus his work in conservation and commentary on classics of cinema. For instance, his comments on “The Red Shoes” were just mind-blowing to me. He’s become too curmudgeonly, but his contributions are manifold.

In addition to Calypso’s list, he has also directed a documentary about SCTV, with the cast of that television show. Not sure when it’s being released – says it is in post-production on IMDB. I can’t wait! ?

Oh I agree he’s done a ton of other things…Hugo was great, I thought. Underrated. I just think he can leave mob stuff behind. Maybe that’s just my taste…I don’t find it as interesting.

We started to watch the Irishman but it was odd to see someone computer-generated to look younger but they still moved like a 70-year old. After 45 minutes of that I called it a wash. And I love Scorsese, but I agree, he has covered that genre.

Although (very) disturbing, I hope Joaquin Phoenix wins the Oscar for Actor In a Leading Role for Joker. His transformation in the character was nothing short of amazing.

I’ve spent a really nice weekend in London with my sister. I only did a little sniffing in Liberty’s and fell hard for L’Ame Perdue by Le Galion. Not wearing immortelle (yet) as I wasn’t aware it was this week’s theme. Instead I’m wearing the lovely and understated L’Eau d’Hiver.

London with your sister…that sounds very nice! And Liberty’s has a pretty fun perfume department.
They offer so many brands, i remember they had lots of Frederic Malle (a full counter and also a whole cabinet in another room) ☺️

I really enjoyed Liberty’s. I didn’t spend an awful lot of time at the perfume department as my sister does not enjoy perfume very much and fails to see the joy in sniffing 10 different scents.

I did manage a visit to their well staffed Frédéric Malle counter and had a nice discussion about Rose et Cuir!

We visited the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition in the Louvre. It was lovely, I prefer his sketchbooks and drawings though, his painting style is not to my taste.

We stayed in a hotel near place Vendôme and despite the highest amount of perfume stores per m2 (rue Saint-Honoré) we ‘only’ visited Jovoy, My husband likes trying new stuff as well.
But i ended up buying an already familiar perfume, Le cri.

It was a very relaxed stay…because of the metro strike we did not make lots of big plans. So we spent most of our stay there strolling through the neighbourhood, window shopping, drinking coffee, eating lunch, drinking tea on the balcony near the rooftop of Printemps, drinks again, eating cake…etc etc Hahah. ?

That sounds wonderful. I enjoyed London, but I like Paris a whole lot more. There was no strike in London, some tubes were still not running though.

Le Cri is gorgeous, it has been on my wish list for a while and fortunately I’ve still got a large sample. It’s very delicate for a Corticchiato.

If you ever visit Antwerp, I strongly recommend a visit to Necessities where they have the new Olivier Cresp line. It’s called Akro and it has some wonderful and distinctive scents.

        • Jiji says:

I prefer Paris to London as well.

And thank you for the Antwerpen tip! Ive read about that line, but I dont think I know a Dutch shop that has it.

          Yes Le Cri is delicate.
Another Pd’Empire I like/love is Tabac Tabou, but delicate is surely NOT the word to describe it ?
I just realise TT fits the cp this week, it has immortelle, I hope my sample still contains enough for one or two sprays

On a whim I bought the Angel Voluptuous Philter on my last day of vacation after having been so virtuous (all over Germany and Montréal and I didn’t buy a single scent): it’s mostly sandalwood, vanilla, and patchouli, or in other words a base, meant to be stacked with any of the Angel scents. This morning I put some on top of the Liqueur de Parfum 2013 and I have to say it’s nice, making the original scent (which is a little sharp and boozy) warmer and less angular without sweetening it any. Worth the money? Jury’s out, but the bottle is nifty and I don’t regret it.

    SotD is Le Cri

I been having a nagging sense in a set of teeth and it started to become more frequent last week.

So I decided a visit to the dentist would be a sensible idea (yeah also horrifying, but mostly sensible).

    And horrifying it is.
I need a root canal treatment and I hate it ? (i never had one…still not looking forward to it)

Yeah they already sent me indication of the costs.
Its a bummer, but I consider myself lucky so far when it comes to dental costs.

Usually I spent 150 – 250 euros per year on dental. For yearly check up, cleaning and the occasional cavity, oh and my insurance covers most of it…but i have a yearly limit of 250 euro…that amount will not do for the root canal. ?

…and I had a long period when i only needed cleaning and check up…that is not even 100 euros a year.

If the dentist is worth the money you pay them, they will numb you up really good and you won’t feel any pain. The bill is the scariest part though.

My dentist did a root canal on one of my teeth that developed an abscess. He said the root was either dead or just about but numbed me up.

Just demand all the drugs, and be sure to take the day after off, so you can drink gallons of water and fully flush the anesthesia from your system. Plan on eating cottage cheese with applesauce, and mac and cheese, with tapioca pudding for dessert, for a few days, whatever they tell you about eating solid food. 🙂 It isn’t so bad, so long as you don’t do anything to disturb the temp crown…

This cold is making the rounds for sure! My uncle started with a cold and it turned into pneumonia – it’s quite scary.

I should clarify, I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.
The players were duking it out in the first five minutes of the game. Never seen things go downhill so fast!

I’m just getting ready to go out and meet up with nancyleandros for early lunch (Italian) and some sniffing! Woot woot! I’m sure we’ll report in later on what we’ve discovered. We’re going to the store here, Kuhl-Linscomb, that carries a lot of lesser known indie or niche brands, in addition to some of the usual suspects like Diptyque, SL, Creed, CDG, Eight & Bob, etc. This is the shop where I discovered Grandiflora Queen of the Night, for example, a couple of years ago. Too bad it’s kind of rainy and yucky, but we’ll mostly be indoors.

Grandiflora Madigascan Jasmine because I wore it yesterday and wanted a replay. I think this is currently my favorite jasmine, and probably most worn one.
Saw a wonderful performance last night called Wild Dogs Under my Skirt, based on a collection of poetry by the same name. It’s about the intersection of Samoan and New Zealand life (from the perspective of a woman). The performers were all of Samoan heritage.

I also tried the magnolias and I have a small decant of Queen of the night.

Now I already have lots of jasmine scents… but I still crave a decant or bottle of this jasmine…. ?
Say… the madagascan variety really is different flower right? Right?…so I guess it does not count as the jasmines I already have, like Sarrasins or A la Nuit ??

Haha! Of course ? I have decants of both Sarrasins and A la Nuit and think this one is different enough, especially from Sarrasins which is in a different class altogether. I got a 10ml decant of the Grandiflora (and it’s nearly done!) in a swap and bought another 10ml on Ebay.
And I did get to smell different varieties of jasmine EOs when I visited Enfleurage here in NYC. Indian vs Wgyptian, with preference for the Indian ?

Yawn… this past weekend was so hectic, it is nice to just have to go to work… ha. In addition to the usual weekend chores (laundry, dishes, picking up, bills) I took down the Christmas tree and put away the Christmas decorations; did storm prep (possibility of a proper storm later this week — fetched firewood, cleaned out the drain boxes in the driveway, swept up leaves, tied down furniture); AND had friends over for dinner last night. My feet even hurt from being on them so much! SOTD is Chanel Sycomore. It is 9:30am and I need a nap, lol.

And under the heading of “Portland Oddities,” I was invited to join “Singalong Acupuncture.” They are doing “Hamilton” among other selections. One of the things I love about acupuncture is the quiet and deep relaxation that accompanies it. I don’t think singing Hamilton is really conducive to that. Maybe Gregorian chant, but that wasn’t offered.

I’m with you and the others in avoiding perfumes with prominent immortelle. But it does show up as a supporting note in many perfumes I enjoy. So as long as a perfume isn’t giving it top billing or telling me it’s immortelle-centric, I may still enjoy it. I saw DSH Macabees has immortelle in it, but I still ordered a sample hoping for the best. We’ll see!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question on how to rehab orchid plants. I had to work for a few hours unexpectedly and did not get a chance to reply individually. The two I’m saving have sturdy leaves and I watered the soil lightly (still need to figure how best to do the dunk method without leaving a mess) and sprayed with Miracle Gro for Orchids on the leaves and directed to the soil. It is getting artificial light for at least 2 hours a day and when I am on vacation, I will position a smart bulb to continue to give it light for part of the day. I will check out the trimming videos although methinks I’ll end up accidentally cutting myself. I will give them until October to flower and if not, poof. I will buy new ones.

I went with Maison Anonyme L’Immortel, which does have an immortelle note listed but smells mostly of elemi and sandalwood to me. It’s just as well because I like immortelle as a supporting player rather than star of a perfume. I made a list from Fragrantica, and I have many perfumes with an immortelle note. I should have fun with this week’s CP.

There’s snow today and the rest of the week in Seattle. I’m one of not many people in the office since most are working from home. I’d rather work from the office (maybe I’m the only one), so I’ll come in every day in able to.

So many reasons! As a preface, I worked from home exclusively for about 9-12 months back when I lived in Ohio, and while it had lots of perks, I really got my fill. As long as I have coworkers I enjoy, I like the social aspect of work. I have a very small circle of friends and my boyfriend and I are pretty big homebodies. Work is an opportunity to go be part of the world everyday.

        At work I have:
        A sit-stand desk
Two monitors, which is super helpful for the work I do
A microwave (don’t have one at home and rarely miss it)

        At home:
Quite small, cluttered 1 bedroom apartment
        Uncomfortable chair
Use an antique secretary as a desk
An upstairs dog that howls and barks from loneliness for 30-60 min at a time
Distractions of being at home and not wanting to work

I have really enjoyed the perfume today and found it to wear pretty close to the skin, which makes it office appropriate.

I’ve opted for Oriza Legrand Vetiver Royal Bourbon today, which is by far the most office-appropriate of the immortelle scents I pulled out for this week.

It’s a grey and gloomy Monday here. It’s still about 10 degrees F warmer than average here. Seriously weird weather for January, but no longer T-shirt weather.

SOTD = back in FM Carnal Flower again today. I needed a scented pick me up this morning for sure!

PS. Robin, I’m really stoked that you liked that BBC article! ?

The weekend is supposed to get down to “normal” temps for us, but there might be the dreaded wintry mix to deal with. Yuck.

Hey Jalapeño! To answer your question re: special bottle of Carnal Flower, I got the remaining synesthesia bottle of Carnal Flower from the FM boutique on Madison.

Have you ever thought of doing a YouTube video of your collection or at least your special bottles? If not, I’ve thought of it for you! Lol, I would love to see them all together ?

I’ve been meaning to share (if it hasn’t already) that I popped into Barney’s in San Francisco this past weekend and in addition to fragrance being off 40%, they are also selling the tester bottles of the frags they are out of. As of Friday afternoon, quite a few Frederick Malle bottles ranging from $150 – 200 I believe (for testers). They are getting pretty picked over, though…
I was working on a mental list for the swap meet, but now I realize it’s a freebie meet – I had it all mixed up!
    Happy Monday. In Like this.

    SotD = Hiris

I’ve been Hiris-ing pretty regularly lately. It’s nice to add Hiris in the evening when my morning scent has worn off. 😉

Hope everyone had a marvelous Monday!

I think that is a great use for Hiris- to spray when other things have worn off. It’s quite lovely. You smell great.

Wearing a couple sprays of Chanel Paris-Venise tonight. I don’t think I have any Immortelle scents in my stash so I might play bottle roulette this week instead.

Hope everyone his staying safe and warm! It’s really cold here.
