I wonder if this would suit a young man in his early 20s, because if it does, I might get it for my nephew Edward. I got him Santal 33 for his 21st, and he loved it! I got his 16 yo brother Xavier Bal d’Afrique and he liked that, and so now I’m always on the lookout for new perfumes for them, and whenever I’m sniffing and trialling new perfumes at the shop, I ask myself “Would Eddy wear this? Or Would he screw his nose up at it?” and “Would Xavier suit this?” I don’t want them wearing loud perfumes though cos I don’t want them to receive any negative reactions or comments from their friends or co-workers or passers-by – it’ll put them off perfume. Might get Super Cerdar or Molecule 01 for them next since they’re both gentle woods.
I got to sniff this at a local department store this afternoon so I thought I’d chime in. It wasn’t displayed as apparently it’s set for release on Jan. 2, but they had it if one asked.
First off, I really enjoy Vetiver and own quite a few scents based on it. Vetiver & Golden Vanilla It immediately reminded me of something once I tried it, but I couldn’t quite figure out what. I’d say the Vanilla is pretty obvious in the opening, and stays around throughout, though perhaps in a slightly different way.
At first I considered Guerlain Vetiver. I thought it may have some similarities, though VGV doesn’t have the “soapy” smell some get with the Guerlain. The Vanilla also makes the smokiness mellower, though it’s very much there. I also got some “burnt” notes, more than just smokiness, which initially made me thing of Encre Noire. However, I do not own Encre Noire, and instead have the perfume version, A l’Extrême, which is considered more wearable, probably because the burnt notes are less aggressive.
In the end, I got what Vetiver & Golden Vanilla reminds me of, and so strongly, in fact, that I wondered how I didn’t get it right away: it is, to me, a tamer, less risky Fat Electrician, from ELdO. It starts of smelling of vanilla along with burnt notes. The Vanilla settles in a creamier, mellower, quieter version, much like Fat Electrician’s “chestnut cream”, while retaining the vetiver’s smokiness.
I’d say, however, that this is a simpler, more linear perfume than Fat Electrician. The opening is much tamer, and it only changes slightly throughout, where FE’s drydown is quite different from its opening. It is also much quieter, as most people expect from Jo Malone, I suppose – it’s not a skin scent, perhaps, but it’s not very loud either, and for a vetiver on my skin, longevity seems to be rather poor (but above average for a JM scent).
As to your question, kevtronic – i’d be wary of gifting this to a young person. It’s very wearable, certainly, and as I’ve said in my take of it rather tame, but the idea behind VGV or Fat Electrician isn’t necessarily what people have in mind when wearing perfume. Especially not men in their early 20s, unless they’re perfume enthusiasts, I suppose. It’s tame compared to, say, Fat Electrician, Encre Noir or even Guerlain Vetiver, which some people with think too earthy, smoky or stringent. However I believe Terre d’Hermès or Sel de Vetiver are probably closer to the kind of Vetiver blended to smell like a more, er, classic perfume.
I didn’t buy it. In the end, it’s way too tame. I like the idea, but it does feel to me like a watered down Fat Electrician. Could be for you if you liked Fat Electrician (or Chanel Sycomore, which I’ve avoided referring to as I don’t own it and haven’t smelled in a while), but which for something quieter and more linear.
Oh and of course, this is just my opinion. I’m not perfumista, just someone who enjoys scents and describes them in a rather pedestrian way. Hope this is useful to someone!
