Friday scent of the day 11/22

Posted by Robin on 22 November 2019 200 Comments

It's Friday, and the Ns have it. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Nasomatto, Neela Vermeire Créations, Naomi Goodsir, Nest or Nobile 1942, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter N.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I expect to be home by the afternoon, and then I'll be in Neela Vermeire Créations Pichola. Thank you to everyone who sent good wishes this week!

Reminder: on 11/29, pick your Black Friday poison...wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Twins! I actually thought there would be more of us…I love this fragrance. I don’t wear it often, it is kind of a “special treat” for me.

Hi twin! I don’t wear Iris Cendre often either. Even though I love it, I have to be in a special mood for it. It is indeed a great perfume.

No N’s here, still wearing Bengale Rouge and loving it! I should think about a full bottle purchase. The dry down is so beautiful it almost makes me tear up.

So cold here that the snow is frozen, which sounds idiotic, but it’s so crusted over that the doggo can walk on it without breaking through. A good sign it’s too flipping cold! One more week, and like the birds, I’m heading south!! ?

Well, depending on weather, it may be mighty quick. There is a free camp spot along the edge of the badlands I would like to spend a day or two at if it’s above 30. See here:

        https://www.campendium.com/nomad-view

If it’s colder than that, I’m going to hightail it as quick as I can.

I got my smell bent in the post yesterday. i have only tried them once but they are all far sweeter in a synthetic , confectionary, way that I had envisaged them. They settled after an hour but I am not smitten . I liked Day One the best so will give it another go.
The Badlands look great, but not much shelter in the cold?

That was the one I liked the most as well, but not enough to keep. Hope TheGoddessRena has better luck with them than you and I.

Yep, no shelter and can be super windy. Many cautions to stay away from the edge during wind. I’d love to go, this time of year no one will be there, regular appearances of large animals (bison, big horn sheep, coyotes), and a lot of space. All depends on the weather. It was in the 40’s F there yesterday. When I last passed near there, it was record heat in high 90’s, so I just can’t seem to time it right…?

    Nasomatto Black Afgano
Its suppose to smell like dope.
Thanks to a generous NSTer, I smell dope.

Not that I follow grammy awards but I am so happy that Andrea’s album has been nominated. Si has been my most listen to album this year, probably because I am studying Italian and also I love his emotional voice. The video of him and his son singing together made me grab a hanky.

Fished through my boxes of samples and could not find the the Nasomatto I was sure I had. But I did find three Nez à Nez samples, so I wore Ambre à Sade, and my god is it sweeeeeet. Synthetic fruit, vanilla, caramel, every sweet not you can imagine in one place, just too much. If this is representative of the brand’s releases, no wonder they were discontinued.

But you owe it to yourself to read the company’s descriptions of their scents on Fragrantica. The most over-the-top things you have ever read, particularly the one for Atelier d’Artiste. It makes Serge Lutens look like a dictionary entry.

Half points for Lea Nereides Oriental Lumpur, which I don’t like very much. Spices over some overly sweet amber. Thankfully I can swap it with a German parfumista for Ambre de Merveilles….

Fleur de Peau from a lovely NSTer. After wearing some heavy hitters, I’m looking for creamy musks. It seems to go in a pattern, ambers, then craving florals, then musks. Then repeat. TGIF.

I am pretty sure California is non-gender specific. “ Her love” might be grammatically and historically appropriate, but generally we need to use non gender specific terms now, my kids are taught. I am old fashioned, hard for me to remember these new subtleties in language.

I have a small decant if NV Bombay Bling. But could not find it this morning as we headed to the airport. So I choose Nicolaï Vanille Tonka as a travel friendly option. We are now sitting at the airport as they try to figure out a maintenance problem, our chance to get some Pepe’s pizza in New Haven gradually frittering away…. wish us luck at actually leaving Pittsburgh before dinner!

(Robin, do you mean 11/29 in your text above?)

In NVC Mohur, my favorite of her line. I’m feeling so much better after having gotten eight hours of sleep last night (after two nights of ~3 h each). Mother is walking around slowly and making working difficult with her chatter (I’m working remotely), but that’s ok; chatter means she is doing well. A big thank-you to everyone who shared their own stories of the deaths of people close to them; it’s so heartening and relieving to see how well you have been able to move past and grow from these heartbreaks.

Robin, I hope you managed to get some sleep last night, too, and that it was your last night in the hospital!

Nobile 1942 La Danza delle Libellule, which I’ve seen mentioned a few times this week! It’s such a nice any season no-brainer, but the apple-cinnamon is especially fun for fall.

My sister broke the news that she has to work on Thanksgiving (she’s a CNA) so we are rescheduling our Thanksgiving for Sunday. Looks like it’s just us and my man this year so it’s not that big of a deal, just strange. I guess I’ll get to say that I’m thankful I lived through working in sales on Black Friday.

You can always go to the movies on Thanksgiving, I’ve done it and it is kind of festive, as it is also on Christmas day.

I always feel bad putting that on the workers there. I know my presence alone doesn’t change whether they have to work or not but I still wish them as smooth a day as possible so they can go home to their families. But there’s plenty of good stuff out right now – I guess if you buy your ticket through the app and keep your concession demands simple it’s not so bad.

I actually look forward to cooking Thanksgiving dinner!! I was thinking of a roast instead of a turkey this year though, and now my plans are all jumbled.

I like cooking Thanksgiving too — or at least, I like the meal we cook and I think our turkey is better than anyone’s — but it can’t be done this year so I am also determined to like having dinner sent in — plus, no shopping, much less clean up. All I have to do is vacuum and set the table.

I used to host Thanksgiving and loved it, but our place now just is too small. One year was pretty funny…without being asked, people brought dessert. We had more desserts than people.

Nasomatto Nudiflorim that I already regret choosing. I only dabbed my sample a little on each arm and my chest/neck, but it’s SO STRONG. It smells like the chalkiness of Blackbird charcoal incense to me. I get no floral aspect. I enjoyed it more a week or two ago when I first sampled it. Oh, well. Hopefully it will be gone by the time I get home tonight so I can switch it up.

Mohur extrait is too precious to let it disappear, just make the most of it while you can. I received mu full bottle as a gift earlier this year.
I think Trayee is still my favourite of the line, it is such a distinctive and unusual scent. However, this extrait is out of this world beautiful.

I am not even close on the N scents.
I did want to alert, for those who have not heard or forgot, the Barneys New York Department store chain has gone under. Alas, this was a rare “luxury” store that did not just display the high priced mega corporate brands, but also sold many imaginative smaller company products. The bankruptcy filing resulted in a sale of its assets to a company which is now selling off the inventory (and I think will sell the Barney’s name to Saks).
So now its stuff is on sale, although not perhaps a deep, deep sale. (I STILL cannot realize my dream of purchasing a handbag there).
The fragrance department has always been exceptional, carrying a mix of “big luxury”, and truly niche fragrances, always seeming to have been selected by someone who really cares about quality and diversity. At the moment, all the Frederick Malles, Diptiques, CDG’s and other semi-niches seem to be on sale. There are even discounts on the Serge Lutens Cloches. A couple of brands I have never seen outside of Barneys are on sale too. (I treated myself to the Phong Dan bottle extrait).
Super permium candles are also on sale. So are cosmetics, for those who favor rare skin care.

      Hello,
After you mentioned the sales at Barney’s, I checked their website. I didn’t realize how much more expensive Frédéric Malle was here compared to France where I am originally from. Even with 20% off, it’s still more expensive.
Any other brands or perfumes you would recommend ? Thank you

Apothia is small, relatively inexpensive brand. I like IF but then I like anything tuberrose. The Heeley’s and Arquistes are also on sale. The Aedes de Venustus (sp?) are a brand which was developed by one of the NYC”s first fragrance only boutiques. Very cool bottles.
Did not know that the Frederick Malle’s are lower priced in France. Here they are strictly a premium brand.

Frédéric Mall is also very high end in France but probably because it’s French, prices in euros are better.

Frederic Malle has by far the biggest price hikes for the US that I’ve ever come across. It’s a little shocking to be honest! I can’t think of another house at the moment where the differences are so steep.

I noticed that there was no sale on the Givenchy perfumes. It is possible that this company’s stock was sent on consignment so they have no incentive to discount it for the sale.

Having a hard day today. Had an early morning meeting that fell through. Fill out forms and waited for a long time but had to leave after 45 minutes of waiting and nobody showing. Then some family drama started and a sick dog to boot. I think that the puppy ate something in the yard this morning that upset her tummy. Wearing a little vintage Jicky for a little bit of comfort. This evening I will put on some Nuda. Just hope my day gets better.

    Good morning from ATX.
I am not familiar with most of the perfumes listed above unfortunately. I remember some by Nasomatto, my favorite being Hindu Grass.
I will be wearing Nuit de Bakelite by Naomi Goodsir. I discovered it last year while in San Francisco visiting that wonderful niche perfume boutique. I loved it and my husband too. He bought me a bottle. It’s a very elegant perfume, a kind of a altogether dark and fluorescent Tuberose. Definitely green and dense, earthy and liquorous at the same time. Though I don’t wear it everyday, it’s one of my favorite perfumes in modern recent perfumery.

I suspect I would have trouble with NdB, only because I trouble w tuberose—but I like the idea of dark and fluorescent perfume!

        ATX yes Austin Texas !!!
You should give it a try. Nuit de Bakélite is very unusual. Green. Not really floral. Nothing like Fracas. More like the medicinal Tubéreuse criminelle but way less floral. There’s a slightly candied angelic root in there. So yes, definitely dark, earthy and fluorescent because it’s rather strong and mysterious.

The fifth one smells like Shalimar to me. No like. I think I will get the four I like in the travel bottles for Christmas gift to myself.

    Nasomatto Nuda!
    I love today’s postcard, Robin.

I had an upsetting morning trying to help a woman in distress in a Target parking lot. She obviously needed medical attention but refused. I stayed with her and we talked, and it was quite apparent that she needed so much more altogether, her life in utter shambles. She was adamant that I not call 911, and I really struggled with that. When I helped her to her car, it was parked at an angle and I knew I couldn’t let her drive away in her condition – I suspected that she’d possibly been drinking. I’d left my phone at home, so had to race across the parking lot and nab someone who kindly let me use hers. Even though I know that I did the right thing by calling 911, when the cops and paramedics approached her they could have been a lot gentler and kinder. I know that it’s quite likely that she’ll be handled brusquely in the ER, and my heart really goes out to her.

You totally did the right thing, but I’m sure it was so hard.

Boucheron from an old bottle…should have said ‘vintage’ I suppose. ‘Old’ sounds kind of like the dust-gathering, weird flavoured cooking oil that sits on the shelf for ten years after the initial flurry of enthusiasm ( mustard oil) whereas ‘vintage’ conjures images of dressing tables and chiffon night gowns, dusting powder, cigarettes and a tumbler of whisky while Lord Snowdon taps his shoe with impatience.
So, to reclaim ‘old’ I will add ‘bold’…old and bold boucheron for a pollen and grass seed itchy eyed Saturday”

Hoping for small points today in the original Nanadebary, which is now called ‘Classic Pink’ but mine predates that name change and is merely called ‘Nanadebary.’ It’s a bit too makeup/powdery for my taste and my nose is trying to sniff out its ginger and nutmeg notes, but it’s not unpleasant and, hopefully, as it dries down the spice notes will make themselves known.

It took almost a week for the snow to melt and it’s cold again today but the sun is shining brightly – finally! Getting ready to go to the store and pick up most of what’s needed for next week’s Thanksgiving preparations.

But, first, a relaxing weekend ahead highlighted by tomorrow night’s performance of my favorite cellist, Ian Maksin. I’ll leave you with a favorite video of mine he filmed last fall -it’s perfect for this time of year and I hope it starts your weekend off on a peaceful note: https://youtu.be/mN0V1J9RqjY

Mohur for me today. One of my favs! Spent the last two days in Nishane Pachuli Kozha which I soooo enjoy. Even my hubs commented on me smelling good (he usually doesn’t comment one way or the other lol).

My son’s best friend was in a major car accident yesterday. Broken arm, fractured pelvis and broken femur. They’ve been best friends since elementary school and they were actually supposed to hang out yesterday. I am so shaken up thinking about it. Not only because he’s like my other “boy” but thinking if it was J or if he had been in the car too. Ugh. Has me shaky for whatever reason.

Anyway, Happy Friday you good-smelling friends! Hugs.

My son seems pretty shaken up as well. Spent the afternoon with his friend at the hospital. It’s a definite PSA for wearing a seatbelt- the passenger had one on and walked away with stitches whereas my son’s best friend has had multiple surgeries.

I’m so sorry about the friend, but relieved your son wasn’t there and the passenger wasn’t seriously hurt. I have a teenaged boy, and I drill him a LOT about driving safety. I also have an app on his phone and mine (and my husband’s) that tells me how fast he has driven, and he knows he will lose car privileges if I see excessive speed or if he disables the app. I’ve never forgotten 1) the high school classmate, a gifted athlete, who broke his pelvis in a car crash when he drove recklessly, and could not compete at the same level afterward, and 2) the college classmate who refused to wear a seatbelt as a matter of principle, was thrown from his car in a low-speed collision, hit his head, and died. It was a freak accident, but he would have been unharmed if he had just worn the damn seatbelt. His parents were devastated, naturally. What a relief that your son’s friend survived!!

Oh dear! I’d be shaken up too. That’s a lot of fractures…hope he recovers as well as possible.

Thank you so much. Looks like he will be in the hospital until after Thanksgiving and then inpatient rehab after that. He’s young and I’m good spirits though, hopefully that helps.

You smell great, I have a sample of that Nishane and like it a lot. Sending comforting vibes to you, your son, his friend & family. May he have a speedy & full recovery.

Thank you so much, he needs all the good vibes he can get right now! He’s had two surgeries since the accident- arm and femur.

Oy! Sending healing thoughts to your son’s best friend and thanking God your son was not in the car with him. This will sound like blaming the victim and it is what it is – who the hell does not wear a seatbelt while driving? He’s lucky to be alive and like you said, eyes now really wide open with wearing a seatbelt!

A reckless young man, I guess! Teenagers, especially boys, are so reckless and think they’re invincible. My son said that his friend is still very shaken up- said somberly, “I will never speed again I will never not wear a seatbelt again, I could have died.” Hopefully this is terrible enough for him to stick to that.

I’m wearing NV Bombay Bling. It’s festive but too fruity. I found a couple of other small-N scents I might wear tomorrow.

Well I just returned from the Nespresso store, does that count as an ‘N’? I am in Naomi Goodsir’s Bois d’Ascese today layered over Narciso (the N’s abound) for Her body creme.
I am eyeing the white square bottle on super sale at FragranceX right now.
    NoNoNanette! 😉
    Happy Friday.
Robin I hope your world better today.

No N today, or this whole week, today I wore Comme des Garcons Kyoto.
I’ve been struggling with logging in here, it says my password is wrong just about every time I log in so I have to reset it. Since that usually takes up the time I have available to write a comment, I end up not commenting. It’s probably me.
I got a bottle of good old Coriandre EDT this week and I love it! I don’t get 70’s from it (I get big 70’s from Amouage Imitation Woman), just a nice bracing top that dries down warm. I’m guessing others get 70’s from it though! No one’s said anything aloud.

SOTD = Nobile 1942 Le Petit Chocolatier

Full credit for moi! There are 3 bottles in the set and I layered 2 of them. And then I added 1 squirt of Andy Tauer Dark Passage since the Nobile was very quiet. I smell fabulous if I may say so myself ?.

In other news, the full Macy’s windows have now been revealed. I took pictures but i’ll have to see if they’re good enough to post and if not, I will try again!

I had 2 choices for today’s CP. Alas, I picked the wrong one for mood and weather. A double whammy. ?

SOTD = Nest Midnight Fleur EdP, from the sample stash. Egads, I don’t remember it being this sweet! I should have gone with Nasomatto Nuda instead. Grump.

I don’t like that feeling either. It’s like parting your hair on the wrong side. It just feels off. I hope you are more successful tomorrow.

Midnight Fleur had a lot of hype for awhile there. I tried it numerous times but it doesn’t work for me.

Epic fail on the community project here — I was in a rosey mood, so I wore Penhaligon’s Elisabethan Rose (the new version). It is great for fall and winter.

I was commando perfume-wise on Friday. Tea was Cinnamon Stick. I often forget my parents’ anniversary, since they married near Thanksgiving in order to have a couple more days off work. My focus is on Thanksgiving at this time of year. Friday I remembered to give them a card.

Aside from the chocolate-scented Nobile 1942 fragrances, my other choice was Patchouli Patch. I thought, “Sometime when Mom is far away I’ll try that one.” I personally like patchouli.
