Friday scent of the day 11/8

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2019 240 Comments

Happy Art House / Stunt Perfume Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that you find weird and wonderful but that might not be appreciated by anyone but another perfumista. Bonus points if you've ever received a spontaneous negative response or odd question and still wear it! Thanks to HemlockSillage for the idea.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in one of the few fragrances that I never wear out of the house: Serge Lutens Miel de Bois. They do still make this one, but I can only imagine that it's softer and mellower than it used to be. If you've tried a recent version, do comment!

Reminder: on 11/15, wear a fragrance by Chanel, if you have one. (This is a repeat from 2014.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning and Happy FriYAY yet again….

Enjoying 2 sprays of the weird but wonderful Bvlgari Black. Only a true perfume lover wants to smell like a vanilla tire….That would be me today!

I considered that one as well. Only no one has ever commented on it. Great fragrance and surprisingly easy to wear.

I love the idea of it, and I will probably keep my small bottle, but honestly I can’t wear it. The vanilla in this just overwhelms me.

That was my pick too! Husband hates it, covers his nose! And it’s quite strong so l can’t just do a stealth spray.

And yes l am a true perfumista 🙂

I gues I’m not a true perfumista, I get no vanilla, just rubber tire. Actually, more like 4 rubber tires! I’m with sariah’s hubby on this one!

I’m wearing Rien. It’s my one odd perfume that I’ve had commented upon. Someone I work with once said she found it strange, but that it suited me. Which suits me fine. She actually loves perfume but her tastes run to gourmands and orientals. Chanel Coco is one of her favourites as is Lolita by Lolita Lempicka. Out of what I wear she really likes Vamp à New York, Black Cashmere and she is nuts about Bois de Paradis.
    Tea is MF Montagne d’Or.

I really l ik le Rien and don’t find it as challenging now as I did when I 1st smelled it a number of years ago.
I would also take what she said as a compliment ?

It is a very distinctive scent. I adore it and it somehow always manages to destress me.
I visited the lovely Loire Castle Azay-le-Rideau some 6 or 7 years ago and I swear the attic there smelled almost exactly like Rien.

Oh dear, another castle to add to my ‘visit’ list ?

I dont believe in reincarnation but somehow Rien transports me to a place unknown to me that feels very familiar. like I lived there in a former life 🙂 haha

I can see that. It felt oddly familiar and lived in to me as well. And I had never smelt anything like it before.

Azay is very, very lovely. Not as crowded as Chenonceau or Chambord, but very much worth a visit. It has been restored since my visit. Villandry is very close to Azay and has some of the most spectacular gardens in France.

SOTD is TF Violet Blonde, and the art it conjures for me is hypothetical, or aspirational, or maybe just delusional, which maybe qualifies for points in today’s CP. As I was thinking about the name “Violet Blonde” and the vibe I get from the scent, I thought “what if Andy Warhol decided to produce a new take on one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic animal skull paintings?” That would be … interesting. 🙂

I am in Bengale Rouge for a sample. This is definitely not in the CP as I doubt anyone would find it strange – it’s lovely and very wearable. I cant stop sniffing my wrist.

In other news Venitiane came in and I plan to send out the splits this weekend. I’m hoping Oeillet Bengale will come in today too so I can do it all in one go. It’s taking awhile.

    Happy Friday everyone!

I really want to wear Timbuktu or Dhzonka today (probably weird enough to qualify), but I’m choosing good sportsmanship and wearing wacky for the CP. On one wrist I have Steidl Paper Passion-Perfume, and on the other I have CB I Hate Perfume In the Library. Former gives me ink, like in a new magazine. The latter I can’t smell at all, maybe because the sample is really old. I’ve been considering the possibility of returning to work as a librarian.

Timbuktu seems to emphasize different notes for different people. For me, it is a woody floral, almost gardenia-like, with a distinct soapy note, in the best way. I have NEVER heard anyone else describe it as such, however. I love it!

For me it was pure soap, although it’s been a few years since I last tried it. I got a new sample as an extra in the Splitmeet, I’ll have to try it again and see if I can smell anything else. It’s the only thing I know of other than Shaal Nur that has a note of karo-karounde, so I was hoping to love it, but I am not a fan of soapy perfume.

I’m wearing Dzongkha. My sister always pulls a face when I wear this one around her, but never says anything. She doesn’t get my love of perfumes. But Dzongkha is one of my desert island fragrances. I will say that I am going to be glad to wear something from a house other than L’Artisan tomorrow. I wonder if I can find my decant of Azemour.

I am wearing Miss Dior Original. When I first tried it a few years ago, my husband said that it was okay, but nothing special . I loved it though, and have bought and used two decants. A year later, my daughter was at the Dior boutique in Epcot Disney world with some friends, and I asked her to pick me up a bottle of Miss Dior to bring back home to me. Her friends all said “wow, we know your Mom loves perfume, so this must be really something good!” My daughter and her friends were all in their early 20s, and you can guess their reaction. They hated it.

    I didn’t care.

My bottle of this sits proudly on my shelf, and I love wearing this.

I once took some artwork to a meeting with a museum curator, and I wore a touch of my favorite fume for good luck (Chergui). The curator started gagging and choking, citing allergies. She acted like I was deliberately trying to kill her. Luca Turin wrote about perfume allergies in a mean-spirited way. He doesn’t believe they’re real. Not liking a perfume isn’t the same as an allergy!

Well, while I do think that’s often true, my best friend here has recently been suffering from pretty dreadful breathing problems. I’m sure they’re aggravated when I go near her with any perfume on, which is usually. I can hear her coughing get worse. She never has complained but I won’t wear any around her any more. She has seen allergists and a pulmonologist and can’t find relief, and it’s scary. I suspect it might be due to mold in our awful climate. We have both had repeated roof leaks after our terrible storms, especially Harvey. It’s very frustrating

Unlike Luca Turin, I believe allergies are real! But his point was that people have overwrought emotional responses to fragrances they don’t like. I have a good friend with asthma, and strong scents trigger a bad reaction for her.

I don’t know when the reformulation took place. But I remember first trying it in 2008 and being intrigued but not smitten. I retried it around 2012/1013 and it was much more radiant. When did you get your travel spray?

Guava! I love that smell. Guava trees grow like weeks around here, right now they are dropping ripe fruit like crazy. The smell is intoxicating or revolting depending on one’s nose. 😀

The clean monkey / sweaty stripper description is hilarious! What does a clean monkey smell like? is there such a thing?
clean like a monkey well licked by other monkeys? or washed by a vet?
          with perfumed shampoo?

          so many questions.

I like it too. If you rub some on your nightshirt, you’ll wake up with a beautiful smell. It’s a lot of fun. First you get through the clean monkey/sweaty stripper part, then the rest is a wafty, salty floralish thing. I used to work with silver, so I love the smell of metal.

    SotD = Nicolai L’eau Mixte

Not too strange to my nose, but this scent did make a friend sneeze like crazy when I wore it. We were in her car on our way to a movie. I wish I could remember what movie.

Ah, well, in any case it is cool now but will be quite warm here today, so L’eau Mixte works. It’s like a citrus cologne was welded to a slightly spicy-furry scent with a dollop of rose. I think anyone could wear it and enjoy. Love it. 😀

I’ve thought of myself as always up for the weird and challenging, but it turns out that I’m not that adventurous perfume-wise. I’ll try anything once, but not always twice.
Like others here, I’ve got a few home-only perfumes (Salome, Miel de Bois, Absolu Pour Le Soir), I’m a bit anxious about all the Fragrantica and Basenotes comments about pee and poo 🙁
I’m going to a fabric sale this morning, I’m hoping to find a few vintagey things, so I think a classic like Mitsouko is called for.

For the CP I chose Comme des Garcons EDP, which is this one: https://www.beautyhabit.com/collections/comme-des-garcons/products/comme-des-garcons-eau-de-parfum

Notes are Aldehydes, Safraleine, Hawthorns, Lilac Flower Oxides, Industrial Glue, Brown Sticky Tape, Musk, Styrax

This was very hard to find for the last 5 years or so and showed up at Beautyhabit sometime in the last year, though it’s already marked down there. I think it’s surprisingly light and wearable for the listed notes. I found my bottle last year from a third party seller on Amazon for around $75. I’d been searching for it for a few years. I’d first heard of it when I briefly worked for a perfume/beauty store in 2013. When the store had their going out of business sale, a customer called looking for it and bought the tester bottle. He said he was obsessed with it but couldn’t find it anywhere. I’d only sniffed it at the nozzle, but of course I eventually became obsessed with finding it.

When my bottle arrived, it was sealed. But when I opened it, i discovered that the top part of the sprayer had broken off, so it sits oon top loosely and anytime the call is removed, the top of the sprayer falls out with it. Luckily, if you work it a little bit, it will spray mostly fine. I’ve thought of trying to split it by using the syringe method to decant, but I’d likely need to test it out first with a thin syringe. Let me know if anyone would be interested in such a split, and I will try to find the appropriate syringe.

    Sorry for the long post!

I’m wearing Demeter Dirt which smells just like freshly dug garden soil. I think it smells wonderful and actually have gotten several compliments wearing it over the years. People tend to recoil, though, when I tell them its name.

I’ve been wearing a lot of Chanel this week, Coromandel, Cuir de Russie and Bois des Isles. I think there’s a sort of earthy, dirt smell somewhere at the bottom of all three of these, too. Probably no one but a fellow perfumista, and maybe not so many of them, would think that was a good thing.

I definitely get a dirt note from Coromandel, I assume it’s the patchouli.

Who would want to smell like a chili pepper except, perhaps, a perfumista? And not just a plain ole chili pepper, but one dusted with celery, mint, cumin, and thyme from my veggie and herb gardens, sprinkled with bits of artemisia and geranium from my flower garden, squirted with a spritz of lime, all nestled on a soft, woody/mossy base. Weird, you say? I say, weird but wonderful! With more than 20 fragrance notes, Dame Perfumery’s new Chilehead is my contribution to today’s cp.

Very cold but very sunny here today, looking forward to the weekend ahead. We’ll be celebrating Mr. Laila’s birthday tonight, then I’ll be working at our library’s book sale this weekend. As a library ‘junkie,’ it’s a favorite event of mine. Best of all, the cat with the broken paw is now free of the heavy shoulder-high splint/bandage she lugged around for 8 whole weeks. Yay!

I hope the weekend ahead holds something special for all NST’ers.

I went to our neighboring town’s library book sale today—they have two a year, and they’re always great, although I did have to do some major KonMari-ing a few years ago. They had vinyl records three for a dollar, so I ended up with a dozen. (Whoops.) Saw a wonderful string quartet tonight, too, so the weekend is off to a great start!

It’s supposed to evoke a day at the seaside – primarily by smelling like a scuba diving wetsuit . It does it really well, it’s quite fresh too. But definitely odd for most people.

I was paid 100 cash today for a small upholstery and refinishing job. So I decided I can have a 30 dollar perfume. What do I see at Ross dress for Less? Pleasures, 29.99. I’m wearing beat up cut off shorts, dirty aqua blue crocs, and slicked my hair up like a soft serve ice cream and I smell like a very well kept ladies room in the hamptons. That’s pretty subversive. Smelling classy, but looking like the security guard should keep an eye on me. They also had Ghiradelli peppermint bark.

Back from a week-long work trip and thrilled to be reacquainted with my perfumes (although I traveled with decants of three faves–Naja, Laudano Nero, and Lime, Basil & Mandarin). Okay. I am just going to say it. I am not in love with Sunday. Tried it last night, and again today… I want to test it a bit more in case my nose is off–this happens from time to time. But so far it goes on smelling like butter-flavored popcorn topping and cucumber. The butter/not butter hit fades fairly quickly, but what is left never seems to quite gel. I am not getting matcha or chai. I am fan of Saturday, and hugely supportive of independent perfumers… but this one, so far, has not been my cup of tea. (Like what I did there???)

Weirdo scent of the day is Fourreau Noir, like a fur coat with lavender moth balls. It’s a great scent for colder weather.
Met lots of old friends and colleagues at the congress, so had lots of catching up and gossiping. The congress was good too. Tomorrow we will meet with another friend for dinner and will hopefully have a nice evening too

Not particularly on the CP, I tried Arielle Shoshana Sunday today. I got a travel spray from the kickstarter. It’s definitely different from anything in my collection. Something in the far dry down was bugging me a little. Now I’m wearing Stash perfume and oil as we head to another very cold playoff football game.

First things first: I’d like to say a rather belated “Thank You” to neyronrose for her condolences about Pixel kitty. I hope that I haven’t forgotten anyone.

Second: the only perfumes I have gotten less than positive comments on are surprisingly mainstream. I didn’t feel like wearing YSL Opium or indolic jasmines today.

SOTD = Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple, from my bottle. I might have found this one a little strange before I fell down the perfumed rabbit hole. On me, it smells like the best gingerbread ever for a few hours… sweet and a little spicy. No incense that I can detect. It’s a good perfume for today’s cold snap.

Insolence. Which to me is a weird thing to wear on a very cold day, because it’s such a cold scent. And the opening is nail polish remover to me, which I don’t mean as criticism.

Another soup try for the cold weather. Wafting a nice scent through my apartment.

Started the day in BeauFort London “Lignum Vitae”, which smells comfortingly of ginger biscuits and lime and therefore is no good for the project, although great for an early morning start.

Then I forgot my plan to switch to Parfums de Marly “Hamdani”, which would have qualified admirably. It is strong stuff! But instead I had fun doing non-perfumey stuff and failed the project completely ?

Today I put on just a little bit of Teint de Neige, which can be very strong on me. I do get an almond note, and usually this note in perfumes fades quickly on me, but not here, and that is why I like this one. I did have this scent on one time when I met friend for lunch and she actually started coughing because she detected a big powdery note wafting around, which apparently she was sensitive to. She didn’t mention the almond. She wasn’t trying to be mean, but just reacted badly.

I meant to say, Robin, that I find that a truly marvelous photo for today! In fact, I went over to Flickr to find who the artist was who made that image in the photo (though I’m still not sure of its medium). I got totally sidetracked because the photographer has many marvelous photos of his cats, who are Siamese and Burmese. So, thank you!

Ambre Loup for SoTD. I was inspired by the NST’er yesterday who wore Menchant Loup.

Happy Friday/weekend! I had planned to wear A City on Fire for the CP but in the end I couldn’t bring myself to put it on, just wasn’t in the mood for that much smoke! I went for CDG Hinoki instead, since it’s still a ‘concept’ fragrance, though not particularly challenging IMO. Certainly I’ve never had negative comments while wearing it.

SOTD was L’Artisan Dzongkha, from the last Swapmeet. Just looked up the notes at Fragrantica, and was surprised to see spices listed first. I don’t get any spices or leather or litchi, just incense, some nice clean vetiver, and a hint of florals. When I first wore a sample, my father told me, “It smells like some kind of cleaning product.” It is not a perfume I would have appreciated before I fell down the rabbit hole, but it is lovely and peaceful and a nice change of pace. Maybe not something I need a full bottle of, but I’m already halfway through my decant.
