Thursday scent of the day 11/7

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2019 224 Comments

It's Almost-Friday plus Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am turning my attention to the community project, in Demeter Beetroot. I have indeed had a negative comment, although that was from my husband so doesn't really count.

Reminder: 11/8 will be Art House / Stunt Perfume Friday...wear a fragrance that you find weird and wonderful but that might not be appreciated by anyone but another perfumista. Bonus points if you've ever received a spontaneous negative response or odd question and still wear it! Suggested by HemlockSillage.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I don’t pay much attention to my hub’s negative comments either, unless he REALLY makes a stink about what I’m wearing… (pun intended). My 13 yr son loves to hate everything I wear, so his opinion is completely disregarded! 🙂

Anyhoo, completely unoffensive and quite office friendly in Tous Happy Moments. Who could hate this fruity lightweight? I will absolutely order a FB when my sample is gone…..

Smelly first impression: So I got Arielle Shoshonna Sunday yesterday, and I am going to need to test it further and get to know it a bit better. My 1st impression is that the lotus note doesn’t agree with my skin at all (lotus and aquatics never do), but the spices and milkiness tend to compensate and it smells pretty great! It did take a few minutes for me to get past the top notes before I liked it…. I shall definitely wear it more before a final verdict is pronounced!

My husband is also inconsistent…he will make positive or negative comments about the exact same scent, and then refuse to believe me when I tell him so. So perhaps there are other relationship-related issues at play 😉

LOL Most assuredly! That’s ok though…it’s good to keep each other guessing the intentions sometimes! 🙂 I DO pay attention when the Hubs complements a fragrance more than once. That’s the primary reason I bought Poopoo Pipoo! He really notices that one.

Anyhoo, my 13 yr old just enjoys hating my fragrance, my outfit, my graying hair, and anything else I do….We enjoy torturing each other that way! I’m constantly sticking my wrist in his face and telling him to take a big ol’ whiff! 🙂

I’m sort of trying to participate in Lonestar Memories. Love this one. I can also still detect some of yesterday’s L’Heure Bleue.
    No negative comments yet.

Your poor husband, Robin. Does he not like perfume at all?

Nah, he does not really mind. Anyway, I wear perfume VERY lightly most of the time.

It was a drag, I had a root canal, but I am glad that it’s over! Now I just need ibuprofen and an ice pack. ?

I’ve never had one myself, but even the thought of having to keep one’s mouth open for that long seems off putting. I wish you a speedy recovery with the ibuprofen and the ice pack!

My own taste in art leans toward ceramics, pottery, that kind of thing. I have a fair-sized collection scattered here and there in the house. SOTD is Gucci EDP, and the art piece that complements it is a terra cotta vase that has a matte-finish glaze from the top to about halfway down, and from there it does an ombre thing shading to a slightly shinier burnt orange glaze and on to an ashy brown. I bought it at an art fair several years ago, and am sad to say that it has no artist’s name on it (it does have a Chinese chop kind of stamp near the bottom, but it’s heavily glazed and hard to make out details). Anyway, Gucci EDP always makes me think of terra cotta and burnt sienna.

Robin, you turned me on to Beetroot so I bought a 15ml bottle that I use occasionally. I thought about using it for the CP, but I decided I wanted to go with one house this week. I’ve been wearing L’Artisan all week, and really enjoying each one. Today I’m in Mechant Loup. My question is should I wear Dzongkha tomorrow, or Dzing!. I really love Dzongkha, but Dzing! fits the CP better.

I don’t know, Dzongkha is pretty weird. A lot of people would not identify it as a perfume smell. I know I didn’t the first few times I tried it.

I’m in Chergui and the sun is shining!? It’s only in the teens though, brr.
I finished my research paper yesterday afternoon and it feels so good to be done! I don’t know what I’ll do with all my extra time now. Should probably tackle some of the housework that has been neglected for the past 12 weeks. The other day I was looking through some boxes in the basement and came across my old Sony Walkman. I put some new batteries in it and it still works! As a funny haha I was listening to it when my husband got home from work. He asked me where I found it and when I told him, he told me “you have too much stuff”? Probably true.

Beautiful Instagram of someone who sells mainly fine traditional Japanese teapots and related items, such as lacquerware and accoutrements for the tea ceremony.

I spotted some incense containers on his website, and there are probably burners, too, but there’s no search function, so I will be *forced* to spend time going through the entire inventory to see what’s there. ?

? I’m well, have been reading about watches, politics, and history more than perfume recently. I’ve purchased some nice incenses but don’t burn incense that often. Most often sniffing my Ensar Oud mysore sandalwood oils these days. I hope you are well, too!

That reminds me, Kyarazen has a new post up on his blog about a CO2 extraction facility for oud he visited in China:

        https://www.kyarazen.com/the-future-of-oud-oils-fractionated-sinensis-co2/

          That’s a great link.
There was an interesting article about the watch designer Gerald Genta in the latest issue of British GQ magazine – Robert de Niro on the cover (as well as a long watch supplement – your Breitlings!)
Genta designed the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and other modern classics like the Nautilus.
          All good here!

Probably won’t push the button, but I have been eying vintage 90s ladies quartz Royal Oaks — all of that cool design and relatively much less than other versions.

SOTD is Gris Clair for some calm today. I’m not sure if this qualifies as weird, but there is a rusty steampipe thing going on.
A little exhausted today. Yesterday was my hubs bday and we had plans to go to a nice restaurant for dinner, but he developed bad tooth pain and swelling during the day so the later part of the day was spent scrambling to find an in-network dentist for an emergency visit. No luck with the in-network bit, but he did find a local dentist who could see him and do an emergency root canal yesterday evening for an out-of-pocket fee. Seems a lot of dentists don’t take our insurance anymore (Emblem). Ugh. ? We’ll have to reschedule for a cheaper dinner out…

Dental insurance is one of those things where you have to wonder if it is worth it, given all the restrictions. Hope he recovers quickly. Not a fun birthday. In a perfect world, he’d deserve an even more expensive birthday dinner. But….reality intrudes.

They were also a little misleading saying they accept all PPO insurance, of which our is one. That doesn’t mean the insurance will actually pay for it. She said after-the-fact that they’ll pay 1/10th of the cost, which is nothing, really.
Dentists wonder why people avoid going to the dentist and fear is ine reason, but fear of a huge bill is probably the a big part of it.

So sorry about the dental emergency spoiling birthday plans. Most dental insurance is crap, and I have never understood why dental and vision are always separate from medical insurance. Your eyes and teeth are part of your body (and important ones at that). Just one more way to sock it to the little guys. :-/

Thanks! Yeah, it doesn’t really make sense and is just another way to discriminate- the whole health care system is terribly classist.
He paid out of pocket, but if he couldn’t afford the cost of a root canal he would have to opt to lose a salvageable tooth by having it pulled for less money. And if that’s too much, just take antibiotics and leave it for now.

I’m in Lampblack today. I love the citrus and Vetiver in this one….not so sure about the sharp, inky part.

My AS is out for delivery today, yippee! I hope it doesn’t fall victim to high school prom syndrome. ?

Sorry, I guess that was vague and internal to me. I remember looking forward to senior prom a great deal, but it was a let down. I’m sure it was for many! It’s my internal ‘slang’ for building something up in my mind so much that the reality of it can’t deliver.

Funny! I suspected that might be the answer, but I never went to a prom. Thinking about what my version of that is, and I think it’s a lot of costume parties- the fun and investment all goes into the costume planning/making/donning, and then it’s all downhill from there, lol.

It really is nice ! Yesterday, in the department store, I applied a little bit of the gel to each arm, then sprayed a squirt of No 5 EDP on my left wrist and a squirt of the EDT to my right wrist. Both smelled really nice with the gel.

And, it smells great on its own also 🙂

Well I am happy to share my birthday with Bittersweet Chocolate Day (hold the almonds). It’s a lovely sunny day (again) and will be a short work day since we are heading to SF to see Hamilton this evening. — and yes I planned my birthday outing. It’s the best way to get what I want, and hubs is relieved that he doesn’t have to come up with something. 🙂

My Arielle Shoshana package is out for delivery today, so that’s my birthday gift from the perfume world, it seems. My Sonoma Scent Studios package is due to arrive tomorrow.

But what scent to wear this evening???

Thanks! It gives off just enough light to not be obnoxious. Long story attached to it as was I was at Michaels, and NOT looking for anything like it, but it really works in the van. It’s a great source of ambient light, and works as an earring/necklace holder. Everything has to multitask. ?

Wearing Sunday again, but if my perfumes were unpacked (they’re still in a suitcase because I’m still waiting for our dressers to be delivered), I’d wear Mirus Silver Lining. The first time I wore it at home, my fiance stepped into the room and immediately said, “Do you smell dirt?” and a bit frantically started looking around to see if there was a surprise pile of soil and mulch somewhere in our bedroom.

Morning! Still in bed, staring at the trees outside my window (I sleep with the curtains open and rely on the embarrassment response ….glance, and look away….should anyone ever pass by, which never happens – ever) Wearing Imaginary Authors Cape Heartache which came as a sample with my Chypre Mousse. Pine and strawberry, and I’m not quite sure I’m the audience for this one. I wore it yesterday and found it a little distracting.
Play day today as I finished ticking off all my work yesterday. I bought a new camera last week – a ricoh gr3 – and am loving it. I have a photo project to go with an essay I wrote which I want to turn into a small self-made book called: looks bad, smells good….things like the lilac tree between the two ugly garages, a strip of newly mowed grass beside the main road, the harbour next to the fuel storage tanks, the florist booth in the shopping mall…

The smell really comes from the leaves, like Manuka…so a softer version of tea tree oil but a little dustier and not so full on the turpetine/lemon element. You really have to crush the leaves in your fingers unless it is a hot morning after a heavy dew, or a hot evening.
I think most native trees here seem to be peppery, lemony, ferny, turpentine-y, pollen-y or berry-y-y-y

I’m doing a good job with the CP today by wearing CDG Concrete. It’s nice! I was quite keen on it and wore it a lot when I first got it (maybe a year or so ago?) but then sort of set it aside and more or less forgot about it until this CP came up. Discovering a lot to enjoy here. Creamy and quite spicy. It’s rainy and dreary here, with a front coming through that is due to lower our temperatures a lot. (Fine by me, as it’s stayed too warm, but I don’t like the rain much.)

It’s unusual for us not to have chocolate of several descriptions. Sadly, from right where I am sitting I can reach about 6 different kinds of chocolate bar, plus the box where I’ve hidden the leftover Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews (not real chocolate, but “chocolatey”) from Halloween.

Hi AnnieA, I think every perfume in this line is really well done. I purchased California Reverie for my daughter (it gets a lot of love here) and was looking at Bois D’Iris as an iris scent but liked Moonlight Patchouli even more as the iris was very forward and well projected when I sampled it. I think the quality is excellent. No affiliation,I hope you try it and really would love to know what you think. One smart and savvy SA at Neimans loves Orchidee Vanilla above all. Congratulations to you.

Fragrancenet was selling 10 ml decants for reasonable prices. Ask me how I know… ?

I disregard my husband’s comments about my fragrances, which are universally negative and based on the fact that I don’t wear the same type of thing his mother does. I prefer instead to seek the opinions of my children–they are still young enough to be honest and have no ulterior motives.

    SOTD = SL Fourreau Noir

Lavender, tonka and musk – fantastic!

PSA or not, depending upon how you look at it: Excepr for some exclusions, every at Barneys is … wait for it … wait for it … a whopping 5% off. Looks like rhey’re ekeing our however much they can squeeze out of the shoppers. I say they should do as Henr Bendel did to get as much inventory out as possible! Beauty should now be at 30% off but nope. Bye Barneys.

I may have forgotten to mention that yesterday was my Friday.. i’ll be back at work on Tuesday. Today, I’m back in the City visiting the Museum of Modern Art and the Poster House. Pictures to follow at some point on IG!

I read somewhere that “regulars” were being given larger discounts by the SAs they had dealt with in the past…so the inventory will still go, but rich people who don’t need sales will get most of it 🙂

The tonka in FN smells especially creamy, like having whole milk without the fat and the calories. I agree with Barneys packing sand!

Ha! Yeah, I got that email and rolled my eyes.
I saw that same thing that Robin is talking about “preferred shoppers” as they were called in an article.
I do think that stock will end up at discounters, though. It seems like it makes more sense to get some close-out seller to buy them out in bulk?

They may still have to pay rent and also probably did not want the employees to be out of a job during the holiday season. Maybe I have a bleeding heart.

When my store was liquidated two and a half years ago, everything started out as ten percent off. Gradually things would get more of a percentage off. Beauty was the slowest to be discounted. It took 4 months to close the store, and the last hour, everything became ninety percent off. It started getting crazy sales around thirty percent. As I always say, people are nuts, they could have bought the same things anywhere else for less cost, but they got caught up in thinking they were getting a deal. Once the store goes into liquidation, all power goes to the liquidation company, and they get a percentage of what they sell, and a bonus for going over a certain amount. They have no concern for anyone but themselves. Adding in my case, the liquidator treated the associates like dirt. We were forced to stay because they hold your severance over you. It was awful.

    BeauFort London “Vi et Armis”

    Top: black pepper, tea leaf and cardamom;
    Mid: whiskey, incense and opium;
    Base: tobacco, birch and oud.

I first sampled this when it was “East India” and I wasn’t sure whether to swoon or throw up. It is still a divisive scent, not least chez Koenigsberg – which is why I wear it here in Düsseldorf and not at home in Málaga!

I haven’t commented on this blog for several weeks due to being too busy at work and also a death in my family. But today I am wearing Parfum Empire’s Tabac Tabou Extrait. I haven’t worn it since last Winter and had forgotten how good it is. I also received my bottle of Francesca Bianchi’s Lost in Heaven and my sample of Black Knight. Now I will eventually buy a full bottle of Black Knight too because I really love it.

    Help y’all!

I heard that Le Labo Rose 31 was reformulated in 2016. Was the pre-2016 version very similar but stronger? Or really different? I loooove the current version but wish it was stronger.

I stink because I went to the 11th circle of hell today. In case you’re wondering, the 11th circle of hell is the Sawgrass Mills mall. I have no idea what I have on, but there is a lot of it. And it all stinks. Something Tom Ford and definitely CK 1, which I’d never tried before. Everything smells of synthetic musk and sweet caramel, even the TF thing, which smells like a cheap celebuscent.

It has that icky, 90’s melon smell. But it probably isn’t that bad. I squirted about 20 different ones. I can’t believe how much they charge for Tom Fords, and that everything in the mall smells like dank pudding to me.

Late to the discussion today. My husband has a terrible nose, he rarely smells anything I wear. (In contrast, his hearing is bionic, he can decipher a whisper from two rooms away.). I’m wearing Si Lolita today which is one of my no brainer perfumes – spicy but not sweet so it works in all seasons.
