Wow, 5 is a lot! I eat an apple every morning with breakfast. Honey crisp are my favorite and this is the time of year when they are the best.
I started eating whole apples at a little under one year old with only 4 or 5 teeth. It took me ages but I did manage to eat all of it. It’s a habit that has remained with me 🙂
I eat way too many, but it’s better than eating biscuits I suppose.

We do eat an awful lot of apples, though, and I will give a shout out to our local(ish) orchard, North Star, for so many fantastic varieties. I had a fantastic Esopus Spitzenburg (supposedly one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorite varieties) for lunch today.
A picture was taken on my first birthday where I’m eating an apple. Picture a very chubby baby with a very large and completely bald head holding a very large apple in two chubby hands with two eyes very much focused on the serious task of eating this fruit. It always makes me laugh whenever I see it, as it is a reminder that some habits never die.
It’s great that you can eat so many different varieties, I’m not familiar with Esopus Spitzenburg (great name!) but I will look it up later.

Samsara extract de perfume
This past Friday I went to see Antigone. I just wanted to share that it was the most awe-inspiring piece I theatre that I can remember. And I mean awe in the absolute proper sense. The Greek tragedy was told through a mix of Japanese Noh theater, Indonesian shadow play and Buddhist philosophy. The whole show was staged in a river of flowing water. From start to finish, conception to execution, it was breath-taking. The shadows were another level of drama and commentary.
What amazes me that Sophocles tale, which is 2500 years old, is still relevant to todays world. And I mean that as a backhanded compliment.

Sounds effin’ fabulous! I know exactly what you mean about the astounding fact that a play written thousands of years ago still resonates. That’s why I love Shakespeare (not as ancient of course!)–I am always struck that the very same lines I am hearing have been spoken millions of times since they were first penned, and that all the audiences going back to Elizabethan England heard those words in just the very same order, which have evoked the same responses of wonder, fear, anger, love and humor, and will do so for hundreds of years into the future for new audiences.

I am off work today and happy to have the extra day off after a busy weekend. Lots of driving and motel sleeping. It was worth it though, we managed to pull off my dad’s birthday party and he was genuinely surprised and touched- to the point he got a little teary. Yesterday we celebrated my son’s birthday early because his actual birthday is today. I’m all birthdayed out now til next month when it is my hubbys.

Well, sort of….I looked at a lot of them online and finally decided on one but during the checkout a $40 delivery fee got added, so I scratched that idea and made him my own pkg of a wine club.?
I guess I was naive to think that wine would be delivered for free, but I’ve gotten so used to free and fast shipping from primazon (as we call it) and Zappos, that when a hefty shipping fee gets added to something I usually back out.

Tabac Blond. I have been thinking lately about why I continue to seek new scents when I have so many lovely ones already (you know that feeling?), and realized that I really am okay with my hunger for novelty. I am letting go of self-criticism for not just being happy with what I have, because it is actually great to be exposed to new things and continue to learn and expand. Trying a new scent is like hearing a new song or opening a new book – sure you’ve read lots of books before, but that doesn’t mean your heart won’t be touched or your mind stirred in a different way by the next one.

I like the thinking, too. But the difficult part is, do I buy ANY bottles then? I much prefer bottles to decants, but the budget doesn’t really stretch to a whole library of bottles…and even samples can add up if they need to be ordered.
Yeah, that is the tough part for sure. These days I rarely buy more than 10 ml of anything, but there are some things that become exceptions because they don’t come smaller and I can’t stand the thought of never smelling them again!
…and that’s where my constant griping about the lack of small bottles comes in. The biggest bottle I ever really want is 30 ml but that’s too much most of the time.
Of course, that makes splitting a great option… that can turn any bottle into just 30 or 20 ml 😉
And splitting definitely helps. But sometimes I seem to be interested in fragrances that no one else is. Agree on the preference for small bottles!

Perlagonium – I visited Fumerie in Portland, and as always, got distracted from my original sampling plan and ended up buying a sample of this (along with Cierge de Lune, Jovoy Amber and another Jovoy – gardez moi?). My original plan was to purchase samples of Corisca Furiosa and L’air des alpes suisses….this always happens to me! Anyway, Perlagonium smells to me exactly like Jardin sur le Nil. I’ll do a side by side comparison later tonight since my first impressions are often off.
I also tried Trayee (couldn’t get a sample since she only had one bottle left for sale and not much left in the tester) and that was sooo good!
Trayee is stunning. I still think it’s the most distinctive of the line. Such a shapeshifter of a perfume.
But the price…ouch!
I was so lucky to be able to get my bottle at a 50% discount. You might consider getting the small travel bottles.
I have a full bottle of Pelargonium, it’s a stunning Autumn fragrance.

I’m wearing another Alkemia perfume oil. This on is called Love is Nearer Death. Full of tuberose, which I don’t like in this concentration.
I don’t know if there is a “too much tuberose” for me, but Love is Nearer Death might not get me to pull out my wallet 😉
I’m wearing McQueen Celtic Rose, which is very simple, just rose and black pepper. It conveys a nice depth. I got this and a lot of other goodies when I splurged at Saks last week on my sniffing expedition with nancyleandros. My splurge will have to be confessed to Donatella next time, but at least on the last survey I had not purchased any FB’s. I bought the special McQueen Parfum, a white floral that was an instant love when I tried it on skin. It’s jasmine, tuberose, and ylang ylang, plus has a bit of spice to it that makes it just so enchanting, when I smell it I just want to bite my hand!

I have tried a number of samples from Solstice Scents over the past few weeks and really enjoyed them and become quite the fan girl. They will do a fall release of seasonal fragrances in mid October and I will be all over it.

After a pretty successful month of emptying decants, I am now going to work on emptying a bottle: namely SL Bas de Soie. It’s more of a psring scent, but it works as an office scent pretty well.
I had four or five in rotation that I was hell bent on finishing. Did manage to close out two–but I am giving up on the others. I missed wearing my other perfumes. So I will just have to hold on to the bottles with the few mls at the bottom…
No use making it a joyless chore! Last time I did a bottle-finishing marathon, also due to the fact that I still had a backup bottle, I couldn’t touch the new bottle for months.

Post shower, I’m not sure what to wear. Offhand, I can’t think of anything I have with an apple note – wait, maybe Lann-Ael? Yes! Looked up the notes, and there is indeed apple in there somewhere. I might save that for Friday, though. Not sure if it will do me for today. I think I need something with a bit more fortitude to get me through my Monday.
I went with Cire Trudon Bruma – it was the first spray vial I saw that emitted “fortitude” vibes.

Today however I went with Guerlain Encens Mythique, for the arduous task of packing up for the move to San Diego next week. We are minimizing the Montreal condo so there is a big load of stuff going back to the house in San Diego, not to mention I already brought 8 bags of stuff to a charity shop. Ouf.

I was indecisive this morning because of the fickle weather. I finally landed on:

In other news, I have decided to wait until my house gets to 64 degrees (or maybe even 62) before turning on the heat. I brought up one more blanket which should keep me comfortably toasty. While I’m awake, I usually move around quite a bit or can wear another layer. Showers are usually hot so no issues there. Let’s see how long I can tolerate it. When do you turn on the heat?
I turned mine on the other day when it got to 66, and the over night temp was going to be 48. I have it set on 64 for now.
I have a town house so the central air does a pretty good job of keeping the house at an ideal temps. The downstairs tend to be cooler than upstairs and I have 2 throws / blankies to snuggle under.
I have an old drafty home. It’s not to bad in the fall, but the wind during the winter makes it pretty cold inside. I try to keep the temp set to 68 degrees, unless it gets down in the teens.
I turned on the furnace the other week because we had overnight lows of 39F, plus hailstorms, and the house cooled down radically. Because of issues with sciatica, sudden damp chills truly does hurt. But I only need to have it on for a few hours- the house will stay at 68f if it is heated for about 3 or so hours.
However, I wish I had a radiator system rather than a forced air system- I think it is a better way to heat a house.
Otherwise, down comforters are on the bed as well!

I’ll have to experiment with a heating schedule that keeps the hows warming for when I get home without the heater going in overdrive for a short period to get it to the right temp.
I live in an old building with steam radiators and no adjustable thermostat, so it’s the property management company – not me – who decides when to turn on the boiler for the year. I think they normally wait til it drops below 50 degrees. They came on for the first time this season on Saturday, so now it feels like the official start of fall.
Do you end up using your own heat source if the landlord is stingy with the heat?
Oh just stop it, y’all, with your stories of heat, furnaces, sweaters, and down comforters! I’m still not in my own house because of the still-unfixed air conditioners and it’s still hot and humid here. Ugh! Jealous! Now they promise the repairman will come tomorrow. Yeah, just in time for our cool front to arrive here, and for me to depart on Wednesday for a conference in Phoenix! Well, at least the heat there is a dry heat.
I’ve never been to Phoenix and would love to visit someday. Boo hiss on how long it’s taking to get your A/C fixed!
I turn on the heat when it drops down to the high 30’s at night and daytime highs are in the 50’s. The heat has been on here for a week.

I keep the temp inside around 75, but mostly for my Sphynx cat who can’t tolerate much below that (and refuses to wear seeaters!). Though we must retain heat heat pretty well in our place because even when it was in the 40s the other night, it was still in the 70s inside with having to put the heat on.
Ah, the things we do for cats! Hopefully it’s not rifling in the summer!
I had the central heat set to come on when indoor temps drop below 70. It came on a couple of times last week. I bought some oil-filled radiators to heat our apartment this winter. It’s nowhere near cold yet so hard to say how it will work. But thus far running 2 of them keeps the temp at 75. If all 3 can maintain that temp over the winter I’ll be thrilled.
Wow, 75 indoors would be too warm for me! Do your extra heaters use oil canisters or do you have to fill them up like a gas tank?

Due to multiple medical & other issues, I experience the world about 10 degrees colder than others and lack the ability to warm myself once cold sets in. And cold makes my medical issues worse. So I’m quite uncomfortable in myriad ways if my house is any cooler than 75. Having radiant heat (rather than forced air) also makes a big difference.
When we got home Sunday afternoon the house was at 58 and I immediately turned the heat on. Yeah, between 62 and 64 is usually when I turn it on too.
Oh good…let’s see how I do. My mom used to adjust the temp several times a day.
I turned on the heat either Friday or Saturday morning when the temp got down to 65 degrees. It was chilly for everyone! Didn’t need the heat later on in the weekend, though.

We have baseboard heat in our townhouse, so it’s easy to just warm up the rooms we use the most. Plus there’s lots of cozy blankets around to stay extra warm.

2) It was a beautiful sunny weekend- I got stuff done, but I mostly rode my bike in the sunshine- while we still have it!
Ah, Monday. I was indecisive this morning so went with the always perfect Bottega Veneta.
I had a nice weekend- drumming on Saturday followed by Mexican food with the crew. I wore Ambre Sultan.
Yesterday I participated in a ritual which was a reinterpretation of a Jewish religious ritual that happens between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. The ritual is a symbolic tossing of bread crumbs (sins/iniquities) into a body of water.
This interpretation was a “letting go” ritual by creating impermanent earth mandalas using foraged pieces from nature in a park by a lake. The themes were connection to earth and setting intentions to let go of what doesn’t serve anymore. The artist that led it does really beautiful work!
He says he practices asking plants for permission to clip from them as a reminder that we aren’t separate from nature, and to check our sense of entitlement. I thought that was a really beautiful practice.

I have seen Buddhist monks make sand mandalas here in NYC and then when they “destroy ” it you can take a bit of the sand home with you, the rest goes into the Hudson River…
I love watching that, too. There’s some sort of spiritual commune in my neighborhood that occasionally brings in Tibetan monks to make sand mandalas on the sidewalk. It’s funny to watch since some of the monks had cigarettes dangling from their mouths ?

Anyhoo–am in Bvlgari’s Amarena this AM–feeling very pretty in it.
Also wanted to share that my husband and I went to a Van Morrison concert on Friday night. I have heard such terrible things about his concerts that I had really lowered my expectations (Morrison playing with his back to the audience, short set, wandering off stage, etc.). It turned out to be a tight set, but a generous offering of old and new, and he faced the audience. Not any chatter, but it is his music we came for, so… Consequently, however, I have stuck in my head… “Have I told you lately that I love you . … ” over and over and over again!
As for books–probably in reaction to my Nixon overdose, I seem to be on a feminist role in books. Read some fun “historic fiction” mysteries by Sharan Newman–from her Catherine LeVendeur series that take place in 12th Century England. The best of the three that I read was Strong As Death, which has the characters traveling on a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago. Really enjoyed the Gentleman Jack book which was written as a companion to the HBO series, and includes loads of excerpts from Anne Lister’s diaries. Also recently finished She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey–which in addition to being about the sex crime of the century is also a really good book about journalism itself, and the challenges in investigative journalism. And am still reading A Woman of No Importance, about the American woman, Virginia Hall, who became a spy in the British SOE, and helped spur the French Resistance. Totally worth reading if you like spy history or WWII history.
I dig Van Morrison! My parents had his greatest hits album on heavy rotation when I was a kid. Glad the concert was good!
So, we–in our early/mid 50s–were on the younger end of the crowd. (Although there was a cute couple sitting next to us that couldn’t have been over 25–the young man’s parents had been superfans of VM). When the lights flashed out across the audience, it was a sea of grey and white hair!

I saw the authors of “SheSaid” I an interview, bought the book the next day, and finished it the next. It reads like a political thriller – I could nyt put it down. And it made me feel optimistic and proud.
And that is pretty much what happened to me. I was in the middle of two other books, but stop reading both to race through ‘She Said’!

I made an apple pie on Saturday with apples picked from a local orchard. I LOVE the smell of fresh apples IRL (really, it’s one of my all-time favorite smells), but I don’t much like apple notes in perfumery.
You smell great! I am so glad I got that little bottle because I see they are all sold out now!

I tried Dylan Blue ( femme) yesterday as it has notes of apple and clover and Oakland Fresca had mentioned it. I didn’t really get much apple but it was a nice distraction to the day. Finished reading Patti Smith’s Year of the Monkey which I didn’t enjoy as much as her previous memoirs as it was too dream-like in parts for me. Today I am off on a small town adventure, to Alexandra, where all the fruit Orchards will be in full spring blossom, so it should be wonderful. Wearing Chloe Nomade, 20ml parfum bottle which has more oompf than the edt.
Well, now I am less enamored of Blue. Had a week of tangled up in Blue, and then the passion lifted. What can I say, I’ve lost that lovin’ feeling. . . après la guerre!

The mucic cliches. It always makes me happy to see song names in a non song related sentence. I don’t have blue, only smelled it once when it came out. I really like the men’s version, I bought it as a gift for someone last Christmas.

First we drove to Alesia, the battleground, where Cesar won the battle with Vercingetorix. Beautiful museum, and a gallo-roman excavation nearby.
On the way back we visited the Abby of Fontenay. A 11th century abby with many buildings, a beautiful roman church in a small valley.
Sadly the weather is cold and grey, but you can relax everywhere, when you have a nice holiday home…

SOTD is Guerlain’s vintage Samsara EDP – finishing up the last drops of my bottle.
It’s kind of nice wearing the same scent for several days in a row, gives one a chance to sit with it and see how it develops day-to-day. 🙂

Our perfumery and website will be re-opening in the next few days and I will send out another post when that happens. At that time, I will be taking pre-orders, which will ship out by early to mid-November. I expect to be fully operational by mid-November.

Early this morning I began the day testing Creed Aventus For Her. It turned into a scrubber pretty quickly. To get it off, I had to wash my wrist 3Xs and use an alcohol wipe and it still lingered. Blech! After that trauma, I went with La Myrrhe.. So lovely.

So far all Creed scents I have tried have been scrubbers on me. Not luck with the line.
This was my first Creed scent. I haven’t tried any others. I’m not sure if I will bother now.
And the prices are ridiculous.
I haven’t had any luck with the few Creeds I’ve tried. Some started out promising but devolved into generic meh, or scrubbers. I do remember liking Fleurs de Bulgarie (I think it was that one) which was an old-fashioned, dark, powdery rose IIRC.
I would probably like FdB then. ?

I’ve never smelled any creeds. The YouTube fragrance community is crazy about them though, it’s so insane the hype they get. The only one that looks a teeny tiny bit interesting to me is Spice and Wood. If I’m honest, it’s because the bottle is nice.

Oh no on your super scrubber! I’ve been there and feel your scented pain.
Started the morning in sprays of JM Mimosa & Cardamom. Took afternoon spritzes of SL Datura Noir (which my phone wants to call Fatties Blowout. heh) care of a generous NSTer. It’s so pretty and perfect for this time of year. It doesn’t last long on me, though, like a lot of SL.
Sitting outside and thought I was getting wafts of something lovely from my coat. Turns out it’s Mimosa & Cardamom back for a 2nd showing.
Fatties Blowout probably wouldn’t sell but it makes me laugh! ?
Hey, I tried your trick of putting something in my ebay cart and got an email today that the price had been reduced. Got a vintage bottle of Dune for $15! Curious to see if it’s legit at that price, but at least I’m not out a lot of money if it’s not.

Hello everyone! Busy errand day for me. I finally got my flu shot. I also got a first frost alert on my phone, yuk!
I have 2 Demeter roll on perfume oils to give away. One in Snow, the other one is Salt Air. I’m offering them both to one regular Nster with a U.S address. I’m using Hajusuuri’s definition of regular.
Bleah on the frost alert! I heard that temps where my brother lives are plummeting down by Friday to a super chilly 11 degrees F. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! ❄
